Despite their importance as members of the Glires group, lagomorph diversification processes have seldom been studied using molecular data. Notably, only a few phylogenetic studies have included most of the examined lagomorph lineages. Previous studies that included a larger sample of taxa and markers used nonconservative tests to support the branches of their proposed phylogeny. The objective of this study was to test the monophyly of families and genera of lagomorphs and to evaluate the group diversification process. To that end, this work expanded the sampling of markers and taxa in addition to implementing the bootstrap, a more rigorous statistical test to measure branch support; hence, a more robust phylogeny was recovered. Our supermatrix included five mitochondrial genes and 14 nuclear genes for eighty-eight taxa, including three rodent outgroups. Our maximum likelihood tree showed that all tested genera and both families, Leporidae and Ochotonidae, were recovered as monophyletic. In the Ochotona genus, the subgenera Conothoa and Pika, but not Ochotona, were recovered as monophyletic. Six calibration points based on fossils were used to construct a time tree. A calibration test was performed (via jackknife) by removing one calibration at a time and estimating divergence times for each set. The diversification of the main groups of lagomorphs indicated that the origin of the order's crown group was dated from the beginning of the Palaeogene. Our diversification time estimates for Lagomorpha were compared with those for the largest mammalian order, i.e., rodent lineages in Muroidea. According to our time-resolved phylogenetic tree, the leporids underwent major radiation by evolving a completely new morphospace-larger bodies and an efficient locomotor system-that enabled them to cover wide foraging areas and outrun predators more easily than rodents and pikas.

Rodent-infested bald spots are crucial indicators of rodent infestation in grasslands. Leveraging Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) remote sensing technology for discerning detrimental bald spots among plateau pikas has significant implications for assessing associated ecological hazards. Based on UAV-visible light imagery, we classified and recognized the characteristics of plateau pika habitats with five supervised classification algorithms, i.e., minimum distance classification (MinD), maximum likelihood classification (ML), support vector machine classification (SVM), Mahalanobis distance classification (MD), and neural network classification (NN) . The accuracy of the five methods was evaluated using a confusion matrix. Results showed that NN and SVM exhibited superior performance than other methods in identifying and classifying features indicative of plateau pika habitats. The mapping accuracy of NN for grassland and bald spots was 98.1% and 98.5%, respectively, with corresponding user accuracy was 98.8% and 97.7%. The overall model accuracy was 98.3%, with a Kappa coefficient of 0.97, reflecting minimal misclassification and omission errors. Through practical verification, NN exhibited good stability. In conclusion, the neural network method was suitable for identifying rodent-damaged bald spots within alpine meadows.

Historical and ethnographic sources depict use of portable braced shaft weapons, or pikes, in megafauna hunting and defense during Late Holocene millennia in North and South America, Africa, Eurasia and Southeast Asia. Given the predominance of megafauna in Late Pleistocene North America during the centuries when Clovis points appeared and spread across much of the continent (13,050-12,650 cal BP), braced weapons may have been used in hunting of megaherbivores and defense against megacarnivores. Drawing from historical examples of pike use against lions, jaguars, boars, grizzlies, carabao and warhorses we consider the possibility of a fluted lithic pike. Associated osseous rods have been problematic as Clovis foreshafts due to the bevel angle and the apparent weakness of the splint haft when great strength is needed for deep penetration in megafauna hunting. However our review of Late Holocene pike use in megafauna encounters indicates the sharp tip becomes less important after hide or armor has been pierced because compression is sustained. Thus, foreshaft collapse after hide entry may not limit but rather increase the efficacy of the braced weapon. We conduct preliminary static experiments to model a fluted pike that adjusts during compression such that haft collapse and point detachment (when point jams on impact with bone) preserve the fluted biface, beveled rod and wooden mainshaft tip. In addition to Clovis point attributes and association with osseous rods, potential archaeological correlates of Clovis pike use include the high frequency of Clovis point isolates and concentrations of complete points with unbutchered mammoth remains at sites such as Naco in Arizona.

The discovery of alphacoronaviruses and betacoronaviruses in plateau pikas (Ochotona curzoniae) expanded the host range of mammalian coronavirus (CoV) to a new order - Lagomorpha. However, the diversity and evolutionary relationships of CoVs in these plateau-region-specific animal population remains uncertain. We conducted a five-year longitudinal surveillance of CoVs harboured by pikas around Qinghai Lake, China. CoVs were identified in 33 of 236 plateau pikas and 2 of 6 Gansu pikas (Ochotona cansus), with a total positivity rate of 14.5%, and exhibiting a wide spatiotemporal distribution across seven sampling sites and six time points. Through meta-transcriptomic sequencing and RT-PCR, we recovered 16 near-complete viral genome sequences. Phylogenetic analyses classified the viruses as variants of either pika alphacoronaviruses or betacoronaviruses endemic to plateau pikas from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region. Of particular note, the pika-associated betacoronaviruses may represent a novel subgenus within the genus Betacoronavirus. Tissue tropism, evaluated using quantitative real-time PCR, revealed the presence of CoV in the rectal and/or lung tissues, with the highest viral loads at 103.55 or 102.80 RNA copies/µL. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assays indicated that the newly identified betacoronavirus did not bind to human or pika Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) or Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4). The findings highlight the ongoing circulation and broadening host spectrum of CoVs among pikas, emphasizing the necessity for further investigation to evaluate their potential public health risks.

A new form of the rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus, RHDV2, first observed in European rabbits, has spread widely among different species of hares in Europe, jackrabbits and cottontails in North America, and hares in southern Africa. However, only limited surveillance studies have been undertaken so far. It is suggested that methods developed for controlling the disease in farmed rabbits in Europe and studying the efficacy of RHDV as a biological control agent in Australia could facilitate epidemiological research on those recently affected lagomorph species. This would enable the assessment of the risk of RHDV2 to native lagomorphs, including endangered species, and the determination of the main host species of RHDV2. Because RHDV2 has not spread equally through all lagomorph species, epidemiological studies could give insights into factors important for determining host susceptibility.

Mexico is home to 14 species of lagomorphs, 6 of which are endemic. Studies on diseases affecting native lagomorphs are scarce, and in most cases, the impact on their populations remains largely unknown. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV), especially the RHDV2 variant, causes a serious and extremely contagious disease, resulting in high mortality rates and major declines in wild lagomorph populations. The objectives of this study were to identify disease hotspots and critical biodiversity regions in Mexico through the combined use of disease information and lagomorph distribution maps and to determine the areas of greatest concern. In total, 19 states of Mexico recorded RHDV2 from April 2020 to August 2021, and 12 of them reported the wild species Sylvilagus audubonii, Lepus californicus, and unidentified Leporidae species. The distribution of RHDV2 in Mexico can be closely predicted from climatic variables. RHDV2 hotspots are located in the central-southern area of the Mexican Highlands and the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, where the virus affects multiple species. This knowledge is essential for proposing specific actions to manage and preserve lagomorph populations at risk and address these issues as soon as possible.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) carried by gut pathogens may pose a threat to the host and ecological environment. However, few studies focus on the effects of cold stress on intestinal bacteria and ARGs in plateau animals. Here, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing and gene chip technique to explore the difference of gut microbes and ARGs in plateau pika under 4 °C and 25 °C. The results showed that tetracycline and aminoglycoside resistance genes were the dominant ARGs in pika intestine. Seven kinds of high-risk ARGs (aadA-01, aadA-02, ermB, floR, mphA-01, mphA-02, tetM-02) existed in pika's intestine, and cold had no significant effect on the composition and structure of pika's intestinal ARGs. The dominant phyla in pika intestine were Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. Cold influenced 0.47 % of pika intestinal bacteria in OTU level, while most other bacteria had no significant change. The diversity and community assembly of intestinal bacteria in pika remained relatively stable under cold conditions, while low temperature decreased gut microbial network complexity. In addition, low temperature led to the enrichment of glycine biosynthesis and metabolism-related pathways. Moreover, the correlation analysis showed that eight opportunistic pathogens (such as Clostridium, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, etc.) detected in pika intestine might be potential hosts of ARGs.

The volcano rabbit (Romerolagus diazi) is a lagomorph endemic to the central mountains of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and is classified as threatened at extinction risk. It is a habitat specialist in bunchgrass communities. The annual wildfires that occur throughout its distribution range are a vulnerability factor for the species. However, the effects of wildfires on volcano rabbit populations are not fully understood. We evaluated the occupancy and change in the volcano rabbit relative abundance index in the burned bunchgrass communities of the Ajusco-Chichinautzin Mountain Range during an annual cycle of wildfire events. Additionally, we assessed the factors that favor and limit occupation and reoccupation by the volcano rabbit using the relative abundance index in burned plots as an indicator of these processes. The explanatory factors for the response of the volcano rabbit were its presence in the nearby unburned bunchgrasses, the height of three species of bunchgrass communities, the proportion of different types of vegetation cover within a 500 m radius around the burned plots, heterogeneity of the vegetation cover, and the extent of the wildfire. Statistical analyses indicated possible reoccupation in less than a year in burned bunchgrass communities adjacent to unburned bunchgrass communities with volcano rabbits. The relative abundance index of volcano rabbits was not favored when the maximum height of the Muhlenbergia macroura bunchgrass community was less than 0.77 m. When the vegetation around the burned plots was dominated by forest (cover >30% of the buffer) and the fire was extensive, the number of latrines decreased per month but increased when the bunchgrass and shrub cover was greater around the burned plots. While the statistical results are not conclusive, our findings indicate a direction for future projects, considering extensive monitoring to obtain a greater number of samples that contribute to consolidating the models presented.

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2) is a highly infectious, often fatal viral disease that affects both domestic and wild lagomorph species. In the United States (U.S.), the virus first was detected in wild lagomorph populations in the southwest in March 2020 and has continued to be detected in native North American lagomorph species over several years. The susceptibility of host species and exact mechanisms of environmental transmission across the U.S. landscape remain poorly understood. Our study aims to increase the understanding of RHDV2 in wild lagomorph populations by providing a history of detection. We present and summarize results from all RHDV2-suspect wild lagomorph morbidity and mortality samples submitted for diagnostic testing in the U.S. from March 2020 to March 2024. Samples were submitted from 916 wild lagomorphs across eight native North American species in 14 western states, of which 313 (34.2%) tested positive by RHDV2 RT-qPCR. Detections of RHDV2 in pygmy rabbits (Brachylagus idahoensis) and riparian brush rabbits (Sylvilagus bachmani riparius) suggest that the risk to threatened and endangered species warrants more attention. Continuing to investigate wild lagomorph morbidity and mortality events and tracking RHDV2 detections over time can help inform on disease epidemiology and wild lagomorph population trends.

Although mortality caused by Sarcoptes scabiei has been reported in European wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis), there is a lack of detailed information regarding the exposure of wild lagomorph species to this parasite. Here, we aimed to determine the seroprevalence and potential risk factors associated with S. scabiei exposure in European wild rabbits and Iberian hares in Mediterranean ecosystems of southern Spain. Between 2018/2019 and 2021/2022 hunting seasons, serum samples from 464 wild rabbits and 132 Iberian hares were collected from 100 hunting grounds in Andalusia (southern Spain). Sera were tested using an in-house indirect ELISA to detect specific anti-S. scabiei antibodies based on the immunodominant protein Ssλ20ΔB3. The overall apparent individual seroprevalence was 15.9% (95/596; 95%CI: 13.0-18.9). Antibodies against S. scabiei were detected in 11.6% (54/464; 95%CI: 8.7-14.5) of the European wild rabbits and 31.1% (41/132; 95%CI: 23.2-39.0) of the Iberian hares. Species (Iberian hare), age (adults) and geographical area (western Andalusia) were identified as risk factors potentially associated with S. scabiei exposure using generalized estimating equation analysis. By applying spatial analysis, two significant cluster of high seropositivity were detected in western and central Andalusia, respectively. The seroprevalence values obtained provide evidence of endemic, widespread and heterogeneous exposure to S. scabiei among wild lagomorph populations in Spanish Mediterranean ecosystems. Our findings underscore the importance of implementing integrated surveillance programs for sarcoptic mange in wild lagomorphs as well as in other sympatric species.

Despite advances in genomic sequencing and bioinformatics, conservation genomics is still often hindered by a reliance on non-invasive samples. The presence of exogenous DNA and the low quantity and poor quality of DNA in non-invasive samples have been a roadblock to sequencing, thereby limiting the potential for genomic monitoring of endangered species. Recent molecular advances, such as host DNA enrichment, hold promise for facilitating sequencing from non-invasive samples. We used the FecalSeq method to enrich DNA extracted from wild-collected fecal pellets of the imperiled New England cottontail and identified SNPs from 3RAD Sequencing. We obtained SNPs from rabbit pellets, including pellets that were collected in poor environmental conditions and samples that performed poorly with microsatellites. Measures of sequencing success improved with greater amounts of starting DNA and 32% of samples generated SNP genotypes that passed quality control filtering. Genotyping error rates were high, however, and the approach was unable to consistently distinguish unique individuals or matching genotypes, while it was suitable for recovering the expected population structure. Pairing FecalSeq enrichment with RADseq is a promising low-cost method for monitoring wild populations using non-invasive samples in an environmental context, but it may be better suited for informing conservation through population genomics.

The mechanism underlying the effects of livestock grazing on grassland ecosystem traits has been greatly discussed. However, as a common small burrowing mammal on the Tibetan Plateau grasslands, the plateau pika's (Ochotona curzoniae) influence on alpine grassland ecosystem traits has rarely been investigated, especially beyond the plot scale. In this study, we flew an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over a grassland landscape under grazing and nongrazing treatments. Mounted visible spectral remote sensing, in combination with field surveys, was utilized to explore how livestock and pika grazing modify grassland ecosystem traits at the landscape scale on the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Using object-oriented classification and partial least squares regression, we retrieved the pika burrow distribution and grassland ecosystem traits. Then, the relationships among livestock grazing, pika burrowing and ecosystem traits were evaluated. The results indicated that livestock grazing reduces the alpine meadow community height by 0.13 cm and the species number by 0.25 while increasing the vegetation coverage by 9.69 % and the aboveground biomass (AGB) by 10.07 g/m2. A lower statue grassland community with greater coverage caused by livestock grazing promotes pika burrowing. Pika burrow density increases 100/ha per 1.70 % increase in vegetation coverage, a 1.87 g/m2 increase in AGB or a 0.08 m decrease in community height. Under livestock grazing, both community structure and nutrients are more strongly associated with pika burrow density. The structural equation model demonstrated that livestock grazing regulates pika burrow density by moderating structural value and subsequently affecting nutritional value. Pika burrowing activity explains 40 % of the total variation in nutritional value. Our findings revealed an intrinsic linkage between mammal activities and alpine grassland ecosystems, which can provide guidelines for grassland management through pika population control by adjusting grazing intensity on the TP.

We conducted surveillance of mammals to investigate their associations with argasid ticks and tick-borne pathogens. During 2021, a total of 20 wild carnivores and 57 lagomorphs were sampled, and 39 argasid ticks belonging to two species were collected. All mammals and ticks were tested by molecular assays to detect Borrelia and Rickettsia infections. Nine ticks identified as Otobius megnini were collected from two coyotes (Canis latrans) and 30 Alveonasus cooleyi (McIvor 1941) were collected from six bobcats (Lynx rufus) and one rabbit (Sylvilagus auduboni). We detected Rickettsia spp. DNA in 21 of the 27 (77.8%) tested Av. cooleyi and none of the O. megnini. No ticks were PCR-positive for borreliae and all mammals were PCR-negative for both pathogen genera. Phylogenetic analysis based on gltA, htrA, and 16 S rRNA targets revealed that all rickettsiae from Av. cooleyi clustered with ancestral group rickettsiae, likely representing a novel species of possibly endosymbiotic Rickettsia. The significance of Av. cooleyi and the newly identified Rickettsia sp. to the health of wildlife is unknown, and further work is indicated to determine whether they may be relevant to public health or carnivore conservation.

Our understanding of the evolutionary origin of Chordata, one of the most disparate and ecologically significant animal phyla, is hindered by a lack of unambiguous stem-group relatives. Problematic Cambrian fossils that have been considered as candidate chordates include vetulicolians,1Yunnanozoon,2 and the iconic Pikaia.3 However, their phylogenetic placement has remained poorly constrained, impeding reconstructions of character evolution along the chordate stem lineage. Here we reinterpret the morphology of Pikaia, providing evidence for a gut canal and, crucially, a dorsal nerve cord-a robust chordate synapomorphy. The identification of these structures underpins a new anatomical model of Pikaia that shows that this fossil was previously interpreted upside down. We reveal a myomere configuration intermediate between amphioxus and vertebrates and establish morphological links between Yunnanozoon, Pikaia, and uncontroversial chordates. In this light, we perform a new phylogenetic analysis, using a revised, comprehensive deuterostome dataset, and establish a chordate stem lineage. We resolve vetulicolians as a paraphyletic group comprising the earliest diverging stem chordates, subtending a grade of more derived stem-group chordates comprising Yunnanozoon and Pikaia. Our phylogenetic results reveal the stepwise acquisition of characters diagnostic of the chordate crown group. In addition, they chart a phase in early chordate evolution defined by the gradual integration of the pharyngeal region with a segmented axial musculature, supporting classical evolutionary-developmental hypotheses of chordate origins4 and revealing a "lost chapter" in the history of the phylum.

American pikas (Ochotona princeps) are small lagomorphs that live in mountainous talus areas of western North America. Studies on the histopathology of American pikas are limited. We summarize here the clinical histories, and gross and histologic findings of 12 American pikas, including 9 captive (wild-caught) and 3 wild animals. Death was often attributed to stress (transport, handling, anesthesia) with few-to-no premonitory clinical signs. Infection was the cause of death in 2 cases: 1 had bacterial pyogranulomatous dermatitis, cellulitis, and lymphadenitis with sepsis; the other case had oomycete-induced necrotizing colitis. Incidental parasitic infections included sarcocystosis, nematodosis (oxyurids), and ectoparasitism. Most animals with adequate nutritional status had periportal hepatic lipidosis; this finding was absent in all animals with adipose atrophy, and it is possible that periportal hepatic lipidosis is non-pathologic in American pikas. Three cases had myocardial necrosis that was considered the cause of death; the cause of necrosis was not determined, but it may have been caused by stress or vitamin E-selenium deficiency. Esophageal hyperkeratosis was noted in animals with a history of anorexia and negative energy balance; accumulation of esophageal keratin can result from lack of mucosal abrasion by ingesta. Several histologic findings that are likely normal in American pikas include splenic extramedullary hematopoiesis, thymic tissue in adults, and Clostridium sp. in the enteric lumen.

Wild lagomorphs play a key epidemiological role as reservoirs of Leishmania infantum, causative agent of the largest outbreak of human leishmaniosis in Europe to date. A large-scale survey study was conducted on wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis) populations in Spanish Mediterranean ecosystems to evaluate the exposure of L. infantum and investigate potential risk factors associated with exposure to this zoonotic parasite. Between 2018 and 2021, a total of 631 wild lagomorphs (471 wild rabbits and 160 Iberian hares) were collected in Andalusia (southern Spain) and tested for antibodies against L. infantum using the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Spleen samples from 563 of the wild lagomorphs sampled (441 wild rabbits and 122 Iberian hares) were also evaluated by real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) for detection of Leishmania kDNA. Exposure to L. infantum (positive by IFAT and/or qPCR) was detected in 56.4 % (356/631; 95 %CI: 52.3-60.3) of the lagomorphs analyzed. Anti-Leishmania antibodies were found in 12.8 % (81/631; 95 %CI: 10.2-15.5) of the animals, and L. infantum kDNA was detected in 59.0 % (332/563; 95 %CI: 54.9-63.0) of the spleen samples tested. Phylogenetic analysis revealed high homology (99.9-100 %) between L. infantum sequences obtained and strains previously isolated from humans in Spain. While apparent seroprevalence was significantly higher in Iberian hares (19.4 %; 95 %CI: 13.3-25.5) compared to wild rabbits (10.6 %; 95 %CI: 7.9-13.4), no significant differences in prevalence were found between wild rabbits (61.0 %; 95 %CI: 56.5-65.6) and Iberian hares (51.6 %; 95 %CI: 42.8-60.5). At least one positive animal was found on 64.8 % (70/108) of the hunting grounds sampled, and a high-risk spatial cluster (P < 0.001) was also identified in central Andalusia. The multivariable analysis identified bioclimatic level (meso-Mediterranean climate) and the presence of goats on hunting grounds as risk factors potentially associated with L. infantum exposure in wild lagomorphs. This study shows high, widespread exposure, but heterogeneous distribution of L. infantum in wild lagomorph populations in Mediterranean ecosystems in southern Spain. The results point to the need to promote integrated surveillance programs for the detection of Leishmania spp. in wild lagomorphs in order to establish effective control measures against human leishmaniosis under a One Health approach.

The roles of plateau pika (Ochotona coronae) in the Tibetan Plateau are often controversial, because it is often regarded as a destructive pest or an ecosystem engineer. Here a meta-analysis using 72 paired observations was conducted to examine whether the impacts of plateau pika on environmental quality (i.e., plant and soil properties) depend on population density in the Tibetan Plateau. Pika population density was used as a proxy for disturbance intensity. The pika disturbance intensity was divided into five groups based on the number of burrows, including low disturbance intensity (LD) (9-30 burrows per ha), medium disturbance intensity (MD) (31-100 burrows per ha), high disturbance intensity (HD) (101-170 burrows per ha), extreme disturbance intensity (ED) (171-240 burrows per ha) and uncontrolled (or excessive) disturbance intensity (UD) (>241 burrows per ha). Given that sample sizes in some of the groups are small (especially for the HD), we further pooled the disturbance groups including the LD-MD and HD-UD. Overall, relative to control (i.e., no disturbing), there was a great increase (80.3%) in aboveground biomass under the LD-MD, whereas a decrease of 41.1% occurred under the HD-UD. At the same time, plant coverage, species richness, height, and belowground biomass greatly decreased only in the HD-UD. Furthermore, the effect size of plant coverage, species richness, and aboveground biomass also declined with pika burrow density significantly. With regard to soil properties, there was a significant increase in soil organic carbon, ammonium nitrogen, and soil organic carbon stock under the LD-MD, whereas a decrease under the HD-UD. In addition, soil total nitrogen, total potassium, and nitrate nitrogen increased at the LD-MD and HD-UD. Nevertheless, the effect size of these soil properties (with >20 observations) was not related to pika burrow density. In summary, there is an implication that the low and moderate disturbance of pikas is beneficial to maintain and promote ecosystem functioning in the Tibetan grasslands. In the future pikas' eradication policy should be reconsidered in alpine grassland management.

BACKGROUND: Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever, is a zoonotic multi-host vector-borne pathogen of major public health importance. Although the European Food Safety Authority has recently made the monitoring of this bacterium in wildlife a priority, the role of wild lagomorphs in the transmission and maintenance of C. burnetii is poorly understood. AIMS: The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with C. burnetii circulation in European wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis) and to assess the presence of this pathogen in ticks that feed on them in Mediterranean ecosystems in Spain, the country with the highest number of reported cases of Q fever in Europe. METHODS: A total of 574 spleen samples were collected from 453 wild rabbits and 121 Iberian hares, and 513 ticks (processed in 120 pools) between the 2017/2018 and 2021/2022 hunting seasons. RESULTS: C. burnetii DNA was detected in 103 (17.9%; 95% CI: 14.8-21.1) of the 574 wild lagomorphs tested. By species, prevalence was 16.3% (74/453; 95% CI: 12.9-19.7) in the European wild rabbit and 24.0% (29/121; 95% CI: 16.4-31.6) in the Iberian hare. At least one positive lagomorph was found on 47.9% of the 96 hunting estates sampled and in every hunting season since 2018/2019. Two risk factors associated with C. burnetii infection were as follows: outbreak of myxomatosis on the hunting estate in the month prior to sampling and high tick abundance observed by gamekeepers on the hunting estate. C. burnetii DNA was also found in 33 of the 120 (27.5%; 95% CI: 19.5-35.5) tick pools tested. The pathogen was detected in 66.7% (4/6), 29.2% (26/89) and 21.4% (3/14) of Haemaphysalis hispanica, Rhipicephalus pusillus and Hyalomma lusitanicum pools respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides new epidemiological data on C. burnetii in European wild rabbits and is the first survey on this zoonotic pathogen performed in Iberian hares. Our results indicate widespread endemic circulation of C. burnetii and highlight the importance of both wild lagomorph species as natural reservoirs of this zoonotic bacterium in Mediterranean ecosystems in southern Spain, which may be of public and animal health concern. The high prevalence and wide diversity of positive tick species suggest the possible role of ticks in the epidemiological cycle of C. burnetii, with the potential risk of transmission to sympatric species, including humans.

A 9-y-old captive male Pallas' cat (Otocolobus manul) had a 1-mo history of worsening lameness and was euthanized. The animal was submitted to the North Dakota State University-Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for autopsy with differential diagnoses of suspected degenerative joint disease or neoplasia. Autopsy revealed icteric tissues and pinpoint foci in the liver, spleen, and all lung lobes. PCR testing was positive for Francisella tularensis, the causative agent of tularemia. Additional cases of tularemia were later identified in wild eastern cottontail rabbits found dead at the same urban zoo. Tularemia has been reported in captive non-human primates and rodent populations with one case linked to wild lagomorph exposure, which was likely the route of exposure in our Pallas' cat case. Tularemia is an occupational risk for zoo staff and laboratorians. Pest management and disease surveillance of wild lagomorph populations in zoos are important preventive measures.

Lagomorpha coccidiosis, caused by coccidia, is a prevalent disease affecting rabbits, hares and pikas. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of coccidia infection in lagomorphs and identify potential risk factors. A systematic search of six databases yielded 102 studies published between 1981 and 2023. The pooled prevalence of Eimeriidae, Sarcocystidae and Cryptosporidiidae in lagomorphs was 76.4%, 6.2% and 3.9%, respectively. Rabbits had the highest prevalence of Eimeriidae (76.8%) and Sarcocystidae (7.4%), while pikas had the highest prevalence of Cryptosporidiidae (6.2%). Juvenile rabbits exhibited the highest prevalence of Eimeriidae (84.6%) and Cryptosporidiidae (9.9%). Northwest China had the highest prevalence of Eimeriidae (87.8%). Over time, the prevalence of Eimeriidae declined (Coefficient: -0.0062; P<0.05), but remained high (65.0%) in the past five years. Our findings highlight the prevalence of Eimeriidae infection in lagomorphs and the need for further research on Sarcocystidae and Cryptosporidiidae infections. We emphasize the importance of developing lagomorpha coccidia vaccines and implementing vaccination schedules for juvenile rabbits to mitigate coccidia infections.
