RESUMO

Introduction: Near peer mentorship (NPM) programs can help support medical students' well-being. Most studies, however, have not accounted for students' underlying motives to mentor, nor focused on clinical skills development and teaching. These limitations represent opportunities to better understand what motivates medical student mentors, and how to support their autonomous motivation, clinical development, and well-being. Methods: Informed by self-determination theory (SDT), we collected data from a group of medical student mentors involved in a NPM program at the University of Saskatchewan called PULSE. We then used correlation and regression to assess the relationship between students' autonomous motivation towards mentoring, perceived competence in teaching the clinical material, and psychological well-being. Results: In line with our hypotheses, autonomous motivation towards mentoring (identified motivation in particular) was associated with higher perceived competence in clinical teaching, which in turn was associated with greater psychological well-being. Conclusions: Why medical students choose to mentor in NPM programs appears to have important implications for their clinical confidence and overall well-being. Findings are discussed in terms of designing NPM programs that support student growth and wellness in Canadian medical education.

AIM: To explore the experiences and needs of postgraduate nursing students within the Nigerian context. DESIGN: This qualitative study was conducted using a descriptive phenomenological approach. METHOD: Data were collected between February and April 2022 using a purposive sampling method and telephone semi-structured interviews. Colaizzi's method of Qualitative data Analysis was utilized. Twenty-two Nigerian postgraduate nursing students were interviewed. RESULTS: Three themes emerged: challenges of Nigerian postgraduate students before the pandemic, the impact of the pandemic on postgraduate education, and innovations to improve postgraduate education in Nigeria. The challenges include the burden of physical lectures, lack of infrastructure, and poor mentorship of postgraduate nursing students. The impact of the pandemic on postgraduate education includes abrupt disruption of the academic program, a prolonged academic calendar, and a communication gap between students and their research supervisors. Innovations to improve postgraduate nursing education in Nigeria also include adoption and sustainability of e-learning, upgrading post-basic to postgraduate nursing programmes, proper structuring of postgraduate nursing education, commencement of postgraduate nursing programmes in more universities and provision of financial aid for students. Our primary finding is that funding, mentorship and infrastructure were issues peculiar to all the respondents. CONCLUSION: This study concludes that efforts should be made to maintain a seamless educational program by ensuring an uninterrupted flow of learning through virtual means, thereby enhancing effective teaching and learning. IMPLICATIONS: Graduate nursing studies is one of the suggested solutions in the WHO strategic direction for nursing and midwifery globally to achieve Universal Health Coverage . The reason is that nurses can practice with more and better skills in any work setting, thus improving the quality of health care services. Our study provides insights into the experiences of postgraduate students and how these could discourage other nurses who might have thought about furthering their studies. Efforts should be made to provide all the support that these students need, using evidence from this study and similar studies to ensure they have a good learning experience and others can be motivated to learn at the graduate level as well. This will increase the proportion of nurses and midwives honed with better skills to provide more standard quality services that will improve patient care outcomes.

RESUMO

Importance: Physicians, especially surgeons, delay family building, and face age-related complications of pregnancy. Objective: To explore factors that are associated with family building decisions among residents and fellows and to understand their thoughts on accessing family building supports, workplace culture, and attitudes toward family planning. Design, Setting, and Participants: This qualitative study was conducted from May to August 2022 at postgraduate training sites across Ontario, Canada. Participants included 29 postgraduate learners. Purposive sampling from 80 eligible trainees was used to ensure diverse demographics, including sex, specialty, and institution. Semi-structured individual interviews lasting 30 to 90 minutes were conducted over a virtual platform. Participants were asked to share their thoughts and experiences on family planning in a medical career, family building goals, the role of mentorship, and knowledge of current family planning supports. Main Outcomes and Measures: Themes associated with residents' perception of family planning within the context of a medical career. Results: Twenty-nine trainees, ages 25 to 37 years old (22 [75.9%] were female, 26 [89.7%] were heterosexual; median [range] age, 30 [25-37] years) from various institutions took part in this study. The participants included both 24 residents (82.8%) and 5 fellows (17.2%) and 8 (27.6%) were from surgical specialties, 3 (10.3%) from pediatrics and subspecialties, 4 (13.8%) from internal medicine and subspecialties, 2 (6.9%) from obstetrics and gynecology, 3 (10.3%) family medicine, 2 (6.9%) from anesthesia, and 7 (24.1%) other medical specialties. Four themes were identified: (1) tension between role as a physician and role as a parent; (2) impact of role models and mentorship on family planning choices; (3) family building is discouraged during training, especially in surgical specialties; and (4) need for tangible family planning supports in training. Conclusions and Relevance: In this qualitative study of residents' and fellows' perspectives on family building, trainees did not perceive residency and fellowship programs as supportive for individuals who want to family build during training leading to personal and professional dissonance. Trainees identified that more tangible supports, transparent information, and mentorship may improve a trainees' feeling of support.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Research on improving academic leadership in nursing is paramount to increase new faculty support, improve retention, and ensure a high academic standard for the next generation of nurses. However, an operational definition of academic leadership in nursing is missing from the literature and a common language is needed to cohere research. AIM: This study aimed to analyze the concept of academic leadership in nursing to inform future research on the factors that affect nursing faculty career development, job satisfaction, and retention. METHODS: A concept analysis using Walker and Avant's eight-step method. DATA SOURCES: Five databases were searched (CINAHL, PubMed, OVID Emcare, ERIC, and Google Scholar), with 16 articles identified for analysis. The term "academic leadership" was used in a title search with "nursing" as a keyword. RESULTS: Three main attributes were found: administrator, mentor, and nurse. The consequences of academic leadership in nursing are improved work environments, increased job satisfaction, and decreased faculty turnover. Capabilities essential for academic leaders in nursing include vision, risk-taking, excellent communication, mentoring, succession planning, advocacy, and education. CONCLUSION: An academic leader in nursing is a transformational leader who encourages, empowers, and motivates team members to grow, develop and thrive.

RESUMO

The Nursing and Midwifery Council changed its standards in 2018 regarding student learning and assessment on placements. Previously, students were allocated a mentor with whom they spent at least 40% of their time and who also assessed them; the new standards brought in the separate roles of practice supervisor and a practice assessor and abolished the 40% minimum, with the student being supported by a wider range of practitioners. While extensive literature examines the experiences of qualified staff supporting students, there is little evidence on the student experience. A qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews with student nurses from two universities in the south of England was used to explore their experiences. The students reported benefits of being supported by the wider healthcare team, said being taught and assessed by different people was beneficial and that they felt better prepared for assessments.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Cultivating a sense of belonging among faculty of color decreases feelings of isolation and marginalization, translating to increased job satisfaction and retention. This roadmap for cultivating a sense of belonging for faculty of color highlights the following critical strategies: (1) adopting inclusive leadership practices, (2) understanding professional and personal identities, (3) mitigating cultural taxation, (4) minimizing microaggressions and racism, (5) providing mentorship, and (6) prioritizing acculturation over assimilation. By following this roadmap, physical therapy programs can work toward cultivating a greater sense of belonging for faculty of color, enabling them to thrive in their roles and feel valued and respected as integral members of the academic community.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mentoring is crucial for professional development and retention of newly hired nurse faculty, yet little is known about the actual mentoring experiences of clinical nurses in their first few years following transition into academic teaching. METHOD: Individual semistructured interviews were conducted with 23 full-time nontenure-track faculty from 10 higher education institutions in seven states in the United States. All of the faculty were in the first 3 years of teaching in 4-year undergraduate nursing programs. RESULTS: Five themes emerged: (1) chaotic work environments characterized by unpredictable workloads, absence of reliable support, and inconsistent access to information; (2) a de facto do-it-yourself system in which nurses pieced together their own support; (3) reliance on personal social networks; (4) yearning for real mentorship; and (5) future plans about staying in the role. CONCLUSION: A gap exists between widely touted recommendations about mentoring and the reality of mentoring for newly hired nontenure-track faculty. [J Nurs Educ. 2024;63(8):525-532.].

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The increasing complexity of care and the decrease in overall nursing experience pose a threat to patient safety and clinical outcomes in health care. Within the local environment, a critical need was identified to connect expert bedside nurses with novice nurses to support the development of critical thinking. METHOD: This article describes the development and pilot evaluation of a critical reflection mentorship program, Beyond the Bedside. The program was developed and deployed in three inpatient units within an adult academic health center. Critical thinking was evaluated using the Nursing Critical Thinking in Clinical Practice Questionnaire (N-CT-4 Practice) pre- and postprogram implementation. RESULTS: Five nurses participated in the pre- and postevaluation, and the N-CT-4 Practice mean scores were significantly higher after program implementation. CONCLUSION: Education leaders should prioritize programs that support critical thinking among novice nurses, and the Beyond the Bedside program can be adapted for use in other health care settings. RESUMO

This study examines instances of negative mentoring among undergraduate researchers within STEM education, and specifically, the common yet subtle issue of inadequate mentoring characterized by a faculty mentor's failure to provide their mentee with adequate research, educational, career-related, or emotional support. Using data from the Mentor-Relate survey of 514 participants in the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates program, we identify prevalent patterns of inadequate mentoring and examine protective factors against it. Results indicate that inadequate research support is the least prevalent form, while inadequate educational and career guidance is more common, and inadequate emotional support is the most prevalent. Enhanced faculty mentoring skills emerge as a protective factor, with culturally responsive mentoring and gender concordance also playing significant protective roles. Less hierarchical mentoring structures, such as multiple faculty mentors, offer better emotional support. These findings underscore the importance of comprehensive mentor training and culturally sensitive practices to mitigate inadequate mentoring in undergraduate research experiences. By promoting inclusive and supportive mentoring environments, institutions can maximize the transformative potential of undergraduate research experiences for all participants.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: A peer support intervention using 'Mentor Mothers' was implemented for mothers who had migrated to Sweden, living in socially disadvantaged communities. The Mentor Mothers had a high degree of freedom to develop strategies for facilitating empowerment of their clients according to perceived needs. This study aimed to investigate which empowerment facilitation strategies that Mentor Mothers perceived to be relevant, feasible and effective. METHODS: Photovoice was used to generate qualitative data. Participants took photographs of their work which were then discussed during a focus group discussion and six individual semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four overarching strategies to facilitate empowerment were identified, corresponding to distinctive perceived needs in the target group: (1) Informative support responded to a need for making sense of the external context, by helping mothers navigate society, the process of parenthood and cultural parenting norms. (2) Practical support addressed a need for managing challenges in daily life, by facilitating contacts with welfare services and authorities and to enhance parenting practices. (3) Psychosocial support addressed a need for improved mental wellbeing, by instilling feelings of safety and security in daily life, relationships and in contacts with public institutions. (4) Motivational support responded to a need for finding fulfilling purpose, by promoting social interaction, encouraging civic engagement and sharing the challenges and successes of others to inspire hope. CONCLUSIONS: These results highlight various aspects of peer support for empowerment facilitation that future interventions targeting immigrant parents can use in their intervention design.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Physician burnout often stems from burnout in medical students that began during the first year of medical education. Individual factors contributing to burnout must be considered within the demands of rigorous curricula and personal ambitions. This study focused on understanding how burnout is perceived by students and the impact mentorship had on its incidence and onset. METHODS: A literature review guided the development of a facilitator guide that outlined factors causing burnout. Preclinical medical students from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health were recruited for online focus groups. Responses were analyzed using hierarchical inductive coding, and identified themes were utilized to create a 2-part electronic Qualtrics survey focused on key aspects and timepoints of burnout. Part A of the survey was sent the summer after the first year of medical school (M1), and Part B was sent after the final course of the second year (M2). RESULTS: Nineteen percent of students agreed they entered medical school burnt out. The percentage of survey respondents who were not burnt out at each consecutive block in their first year decreased from 80% during the first block to 20% at the beginning of the last block. Focus group and survey results found that mentorship had positive effects on burnout, and students noted increased needs for mental health services. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding key pressure points and essential resources for addressing student burnout allows for improved education and personal outcomes. Alleviating factors were strong mentorship, mental health resources, and streamlined faculty communication. Increasing burnout highlights the importance of interventions to reduce long-lasting effects on student performance and well-being.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite available training programs for neonatal advanced practice providers (Neo APP), including neonatal nurse practitioners and physician assistants, it is difficult to meet the demand for these providers. There are no publications regarding training models with greater than 1 Neo APP learner per mentor. PURPOSE: To create and measure outcomes of a 12-month program to educate Neo APP "Super-Mentors" able to train 2 Neo APP learners simultaneously. METHODS: Super-Mentors were selected and attended monthly classes to learn mentorship concepts and receive support. Learners received didactic content and support through a Fellowship program. Quantitative data regarding recruitment and retention, as well as Misener Nurse Practitioner Job Satisfaction Scale (MNPJSS) results were compared pre- and postprogram. Qualitative satisfaction measures via survey from 21 stakeholders were analyzed through a phenomenological approach. RESULTS: Six Super-Mentors trained 14 Neo APPs, as compared to 7 in the previous year. One Neo APP left after training. Summative preprogram MNPJSS scores were better (5.1 ± 0.37) than postprogram (4.7 ± 0.47) ( P < .001). The most important preprogram subscale item was "vacation" versus "quality of assistive personnel" postprogram. Both pre- and postprogram scores reflected positive job satisfaction so differences may not be clinically significant. Qualitative program benefits included faster and increased onboarding, stronger relationships, and dedicated time. Challenges included role clarity among other stakeholders, learning culture, and spacial/technological logistics. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Super-Mentors can train twice the number of Neo APP learners, with optimal preparation and support of all stakeholders, adequate space, and appropriate technology.

RESUMO

AIM: To explore the influence of supervisory and mentoring relationships on the clinical learning experiences of Czech Nursing and health professional students in the context of patient safety events BACKGROUND: Clinical experience is integral to healthcare education, shaping skills, behaviours, values and professional identity. During clinical placements, students may encounter memorable patient safety events and experience varied reactions from mentors/supervisors/others. Some research has highlighted challenges faced by students on clinical placement. Few studies involve multiple professions, most emanating from Western Europe, the UK, the USA and Australia with little relating to central European countries such as the Czech Republic. DESIGN: Two stage interpretivist qualitative study based in social constructionism METHODS: Convenience sample across 13 undergraduate and 18 postgraduate health professions courses. Stage 1 (2022): using SLIPPS Learning Event Recording Tool translated into Czech. 20 students' (Midwifery=11, Nursing=1, Paramedic=1, Occupational therapy =7) submitted 21 patient safety learning event narratives. Stage 2 (2022): Focus group with 2 nursing and nine midwifery students. Phased thematic analysis involving multiple researchers. RESULTS: Three themes illustrate the circumstances and impact of placement mentoring/supervision experiences, conceptualised as: 'Clinical and Emotional Companionship', 'Clinical and Emotional Abandonment' and 'Sense of agency - Professional and personal growth'. 'Companionship' reflected the students' feelings of being welcomed, respected, heard, trusted and supported. Conversely 'abandonment' emerged from feelings of being unheard, vulnerable, humiliated, afraid, leaving students feeling abandoned, lonely and 'useless'. Notwithstanding these conditions, students showed the ability to identify patient safety issues with agency evident in reactions such as stepping-in to try to ameliorate a situation, rather than speaking-up. Professional and personal growth was also apparent in their narratives and a conceptual diagram illustrates the students' learning journeys in a patient safety context. CONCLUSION: The findings and new conceptualisations around abandonment and companionship emerging from this study expand the evidence base regarding the profound impact of clinical experience and mentorship/supervision on learning and students' emotional wellbeing. A sense of companionship appears to play a buffering role even in challenging circumstances of involvement in or witnessing compromised patients' safety. Allowing students a sense of belonging, to vent, grow, feel supported and safe to ask/learn - contributing to 'emotional safety for learning', promotes students' behaviour that may prevent/minimize hazards or ameliorate the aftermath. However, we must not simply blame mentors/supervisors, staff, or the students themselves- they are simply part of a much larger complex environment of professional education encompassing hidden curriculums, power dynamics and professional socialisation.

RESUMO

Burnout is a widespread issue among physicians, including radiologists and radiology trainees. Long hours, isolation, and substantial stress levels contribute to healthcare workers experiencing a substantially higher rate of burnout compared with other professionals. Resident physicians, continuously exposed to stressors such as new clinical situations and performance feedback, are particularly susceptible. Mentorship has proven to be an effective strategy in mitigating burnout. Various mentorship delivery models exist, all aiming to have mentors serve as role models to mentees, thereby alleviating stress and anxiety. Physician groups and healthcare enterprises have actively implemented these programs, recognizing them as both successful and cost-effective. This article explores different mentorship models, their implementation processes, and the effectiveness of these programs as a standard component of academic departments.

RESUMO

This paper is based on a symposium on mentoring in infant mental health that took place at the 18th World Association for Infant Mental Health (WAIMH) conference. The symposium commemorated Robert N. Emde who was one of the founders of the field of Infant Mental Health, and devoted much of his career to mentorship. From an IMH perspective, mentoring experiences are best thought of as relationships, significant for both mentor and mentee, with positive mentoring experiences crucial for the development of IMH clinicians and researchers. The symposium participants, two pairs of mentor-mentee dyads, first gave an opening statement about what mentoring meant for them generally and personally, and then addressed three issues: the goodness of fit between mentor and mentee, "light and shadow" in mentoring relationships, and balancing old wisdom with new trends in mentoring. The paper brings the participants' views and personal experiences regarding these issues in their own words, highlighting key personal and professional issues related to mentorship from the perspectives of both mentor and mentee.
