[Height-weight standards in Lomellina children 0 to 7 years of age: percentile graphs]. / Gli standard staturo-ponderali dei bambini della Lomellina da 0 a 7 anni: i grafici dei percentili.

Recumbent length (or standing height) and weight standards of 1253 infants and children living in Lomellina were studied by a cross-sectional approach. Metric data from birth to 7 years of age were smoothed by a least squares quadratic or cubic spline technique. Growth percentile curves for males and females are subdivided into two sections, the first for the 0-3 and the second for the 3-7 age groups.

By a simple microcomputer program, children's pondostatural growth rate status can be assessed, after having introduced the birth date, sex, and current weigh an height. Starting from these data, the computer displays the existing deviations (expressed as a percent) between the current an mean height for the age, and between the current and relative weight, ie, the mean weight which corresponds to the current height. This program can show, through only two values, the present growth rate status in a quick and accurate way, easy to grasp by the child and his/her family; it also permits a clear comparison to be established among ongoing measurements. The ideal growth chart, build from this values, becomes oversimplified into an horizontal line, drawn at the point level of the 0% deviation. Any existing growth trend is expressed by the upward of downward deviation, relative to the aforementioned horizontal line.

Estudio transversal de Caracas / Caracas's cross-sectional study

Se presenta la revisión del Estudio Transversal del Area Metropolitana de Caracas realizado en Fundacredesa. Este estudio se hizo con la colaboración del Instituto Nacional de Nutrición y de la Universidad Simón Bolívar entre los años 1973 y 1977, en Venezolanos de los estratos altos del Area Metropolitana de Caracas. La muestra se seleccionó en institutos educacionales y en clínicas privadas. Se midieron 5580 sujetos de los dos sexos para una cobertura de 78,15%. Se efectuaron doce mediciones antropométricas de acuerdo a las técnicas recomendadas internacionalmente. Se presentan las medias, desviaciones típicas, y los percentiles de las variables: peso, talla, segmento superior, circunferencia cefálica, circunferencia del brazo, pliegue del tríceps, pliegue subescapular, diámetro biacromial y diámetro bilíaco. Estos resultados son recomendados por Fundacredesa, el Instituto Nacional de Nutrición, la División Materno Infantil del Ministerio de Sanidad y la Sociedad Venezolana de Puericultura y Pediatría, para ser utilizados como Normas Provisionales para Venezuela, mientras se concluye el Proyecto Venezuela y se elaboren las Normas Nacionales Definitivas
