Plant cell cultures from cloudberry (CL), lingonberry (LI), stone berry (ST), arctic bramble (AB), and strawberry (SB) were studied in terms of their polyphenol and carotenoid composition, antioxidant activity, antihemolytic activity and cytotoxicity effects on cancerous cells. High-resolution mass spectrometry data showed that LI, presented the highest antioxidant activity, contained the highest contents of flavones, phenolic acids, lignans, and total carotenoids, while CL, ST and SB presented the opposite behavior. AB and SB presented the lowest FRAP and CUPRAC values, while AB and CL presented the lowest reducing power. SB presented the lowest antioxidant activity measured by single electron transfer assays and the lowest content of lignans, phenolic acids, and flavones. CL and LI decreased the viability of in vitro mammary gland adenocarcinoma while only LI decreased the viability of in vitro lung carcinoma and showed protective effects of human erythrocytes against mechanical hemolysis.

In this study, we tested the in vitro efficacy of a graphene oxide-chitooligosaccharide (GO-COS) complex developed to protect blueberry anthocyanins (An) from degradation by various physicochemical factors and the digestive process. We prepared a GO-COS complex to adsorb An and protect them from the destructive effects of their ambient environment. The complex protected the An under various temperature, pH, light, oxidant, and reductant conditions. We evaluated An content and composition in a simulated digestive system using the pH differential method and the high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The GO-COS carrier stabilized An in the intestine and protected their peroxyl radical-scavenging capacity. Additionally, we observed a dose-response relationship between An content and cellular antioxidant activity, and simultaneous improvement of An bioavailability when the An were encapsulated in the complex. The complex inhibited HepG2 cell proliferation at the tested dose range. This study provides valuable information for stability of An-rich products.

In this study, the aerial parts and bulbs of nine Allium species were investigated for their functional phytochemical profile, in vitro antioxidant activities, acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and tyrosinase inhibitory properties. Phenolics, alkaloids, glucosinolates and other sulfur-containing compounds were distinctively profiled in the different species. Maceration in methanol allowed recovering the highest cumulative phenolic content in A. scabrifolium (42.31 mg/g), followed by A. goekyigiti (33.15 mg/g) and A. atroviolaceum (28.35 mg/g). The aerial parts of all Allium species showed high in vitro antioxidant activity whereas methanolic extract of A. cappadocicum bulb showed the highest inhibition against AChE (2.44 mg galantamine equivalent/g) and the water extracts of A. isauricum aerial part were the best BChE inhibitors (4.31 mg galantamine equivalent/g). Bulbs were the richer source of oligosaccharides, and in vitro digestion determined an increase of oligosaccharides bioaccessibility. A promising nutraceutical potential could be highlighted in our understudied Allium species.

The ethanol extracts of five Origanum species: O. majorana L., O. onites L., O. syriacum L., O. vulgare subsp. hirtum (Link) Ietsw., and O. vulgare subsp. viride (Boiss.) Hayek, collected annually (each month), were investigated for their cholinesterase inhibition and antioxidant effects. The phytochemical composition of a total of 60 extracts was assessed by HPLC-DAD-ESI/HRMS, revealing the presence of a total of 73 compounds. Possible correlation between the bioactivity and metabolite profiles during 12 months was monitored. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity was found to be the highest between April and November (50.29-75.95%, 200 µg/mL), while the highest inhibition towards butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) was observed for the extracts between April and October (71.68-88.97%). Aromadendrin showed good correlation with anti-AChE, anti-BChE and reducing power activities. Furthermore, molecular docking data with aromadendrin, caffeoylarbutin and eriodictyol indicated that caffeoylarbutin had the lowest binding energy against both enzymes.

To systematically identify and quantify the γ- and δ-lactones in Cheddar cheeses, 20 samples from three sources (Ireland, the UK and the USA) were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O), aroma extract dilution analysis, aroma recombination analysis, and aroma addition/omission analysis. Nine lactones were detected in these samples, and one of these lactones, γ-undecalactone, was identified in Cheddar cheese for the first time. The quantitative results showed that the concentration of lactones in these cheeses usually increased as the length of their maturity period increased. γ-Octalactone, γ-undecalactone, γ-dodecalactone, δ-octalactone, δ-decalactone and δ-dodecalactone were identified as aroma-active substances based on their odour activity values and aroma extract dilution analysis, with flavour dilution factors ranging from 2 to 128. Aroma recombination and omission experiments based on a newly developed deodorised Cheddar matrix further validated the important contributions of these lactones to the overall aroma of Cheddar cheeses. The addition of each lactone to aroma recombination models reduced the aroma intensity of sour and rancid properties to various extents and improved the acceptability of the overall flavour.

The work explored the process of ultrasound-assisted adsorption/desorption to efficiently purify jujube peel flavonoids (JPFs) using macroporous resins (MRs). The impact of ultrasound power and temperature on the adsorption/desorption features of JPFs on MRs were studied. The maximum adsorption (80.21 ± 2.11 mg/g) /desorption (76.22 ± 1.68 mg/g) capacity of total flavonoids content were obtained. The pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm models better described the whole process of ultrasound-assisted adsorption. The adsorption process was spontaneous, physical, and dominated by multilinear intraparticle diffusion. Ultrasound mainly enhanced the adsorption capacity by strengthening the formation of hydrogen bonds and increasing the surface roughness of MRs. Besides, the principal individual flavonoid ((+)-Catechin, (-)-Epicatechin, Rutin, Quercetin-3-O-robinobioside) content of JPFs in ultrasound treatment was 2-3 times that of shaking treatment, and biological activities were significantly increased. Overall, as a low-cost green technology, ultrasound can improve the properties of MRs and better purify JPFs.

In this study, date syrup waste extract (DSWE) (15 wt%) and different content of silver doped sepiolite hybrid (Ag-Sep, 0.25-3 wt%) were incorporated into gelatin matrix to develop a series of active composite packaging films. Incorporating 2 wt% of Ag-Sep increased the modulus of blend film by 98% compared to unmodified gelatin/DSWE blend film. The active gelatin composite film exhibited superior active compounds migration to aqueous food simulants. Besides, Ag-Sep provided a tortuous pathway to the composite film, resulting in high 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical inhibition efficiency (91%) and slow-release kinetics of active compounds to the food simulant. The Ag-Sep hybrid was improved the antimicrobial property of the gelatin/DSWE blend film against both gram-negative and gram-positive microbes. Thus, this study demonstrated that the Ag-Sep hybrid exhibits significant properties in the active gelatin composite films, implying that this hybrid could be an effective additive for various active packaging films.

Cardoon seeds collected in Greece at four different maturity stages (samples S1 to S4) were analysed in terms of chemical composition and in vitro bioactivities. The content of phenolic compounds (six compounds in total) increased with increasing maturity, and 3,5-O-dicaffeyolquinic (14.8-33.8 mg/g extract) acid was the compound detected in higher abundance. Mature seeds (sample S4) also revealed the highest content in lipids (23 g/100 g extract) and tocopherols (29.62 mg/100 g dw) and demonstrated the highest cytotoxic (GI50 of 97-216 µg/mL) and anti-inflammatory (IC50 = 148 µg/mL) activities, and capacity to inhibit the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) (IC50 = 5 µg/mL). Cardoon seed hydroethanolic extracts also revealed high antibacterial and antifungal potential, particularly samples S3 and S1, respectively. This study proved the multifaceted potential associated with valorisation of cardoon seeds, while their biological and chemical composition can be influenced by the maturity stage.

Jaggery is a kind of unrefined non-centrifugal sugar (NCS) used mainly in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Traditionally, jaggery is produced by concentrating sugarcane juice in open pans with the help of bagasse combustion. However, due to thermal energy loss with flue gases and an unscientific approach in plant construction, jaggery plants have a poor thermal efficiency of less than 25%, poor emission characteristics, and a high bagasse consumption rate. Advanced jaggery-making techniques use solar energy and heat pumps for jaggery production. However, these techniques are in the early stage of development, and the literature indicates that these techniques should be used in conjuction with traditional ones to improve the performance of jaggery making plants. This literature review describes advances in jaggery-making methods, critically analyzed them, and provides a qualitative comparison of these methods. Further, gaps in the existing literature are identified and reported for future research direction. In addition, efforts have been made to quantify and estimate the emissions reduction and bagasse consumption potentials from the traditional jaggery industry to make this rural industry a sustainable and profitable business for rural entrepreneurs. The comparison with the recently developed clean combustion device exhibits that the harmful emissions from the jaggery industry could be reduced drastically viz. 95%-98% of PM2.5; 92%-95% of CO, and 52-60% of CO2, while saving more than 35% of bagasse consumption. Implemented at a national scale, it may reduce nearly 3% of all harmful emissions in the country, which is equally applicable elsewhere.

Curcuminoids are known to exert diverse pharmacological effects and used in some pharmaceutical formulations. This study describes the preparation, characterization, and enhancement in the solubility and anticancer activity of a curcuminoids-rich extract (CRE) using a ternary inclusion complex system. CRE containing 88.9% w/w curcuminoids was prepared using a 'green' microwave extraction coupled with fractionation on a column of hydrophobic adsorbent resin. The ternary complex consisting of CRE, hydroxylpropyl-ß-cyclodextrin and polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 was prepared using the solvent evaporation method and thoroughly characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffractograms, differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. The ternary complex of CRE improved the water-solubility of curcuminoids (up to 70.3 µg/mL) as well as the dissolution rate when compared to those of CRE (0 µg/mL). In addition, the ternary complex exhibited significantly stronger anticancer activity against human lung adenocarcinoma (A-549), human cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa) and human colon adenocarcinoma (HT-29) cell lines than CRE.

Major anthocyanin, cyanidin-3-sophoroside (318.1 mg/mL), and other minor copigments were identified in the ethanol extract of Hibiscus rosa sinensis. The extracts can be coelectrospun with polycaprolactone and polyethylene oxide into fiber mats and were sensitive to pH changes from 1 to 13 with a unique color code (ΔE > 5). The pH sensor was used to monitor shrimp quality under isothermal conditions to obtain the respective activation energy (Ea in kJ/mol) of the sensors' color-change response (20.2), measured pH (20.6), and trimethylamine nitrogen (24.6), indole (27.1), and total microbial counts (30.8). Together with the Pearson correlation coefficient, the results showed high correlations between the sensors' color change and other quality parameters (p < 0.001). The regression equation developed by conducting the kinetic analysis was also suitable for predicting shrimp quality at refrigeration temperatures (4-10 °C) and can be used as a marker to monitor shrimp quality by visually inspecting the item condition.

The effect of different levels of allspice and perilla frutescens seed extract (ASE and PSE) on the formation of heterocyclic amines (HCAs) in pan-fried chicken meat patties and the bioactive components found in ASE and PSE that contribute to the mitigation of HCAs were investigated in this study. DPPH radical scavenging activity was evaluated and the results indicated that APSE (ASE + PSE) showed the highest capacity to scavenge free radicals, and the most effective inhibition of HCAs formation. Furthermore, Single and mixed phenolic compounds exhibited a positive effect in scavenging free radicals and mitigating HCAs. The radical scavenging activity and HCAs inhibition effect of single phenolic compounds were highly correlated, whereas mixed phenolic compounds exhibited poor correlation. PCA analysis indicated that phenolic compounds had the maximum inhibitory effect on IQ, followed by Norharman and harman and the minimal effect on PhIP and 7,8-DiMeIQx.

Ultra-high pressure (UHP) is a novel non-thermal pretreatment method in food processing for improving the extraction yield of polyphenols and functional properties. The present work investigated the phenolic profiles, antioxidant activities, and cytoprotective effects of the free, esterified, and insoluble-bound phenolic fractions from mango leaves before and after ultra-high pressure (UHP) treatment. UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS/MS analysis resulted in the identification of 42 phenolic compounds in the different phenolic forms. UHP pretreatment could significantly influence the contents of total phenols, total flavonoids and individual compounds in the different phenolic fractions (p < 0.05). After UHP pretreatment, these phenolic fractions exhibited greater antioxidant activity, and inhibited reactive oxygen species production and cell apoptosis (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, IBP were the most potential antioxidative and cytoprotective ingredients. Therefore, UHP pretreated mango leaves with enhanced bioactivity could be used as biological agents in the health food industry to improve its application and economic values.

This study is the first dynamic simulation of gastrointestinal digestion of cranberry polyphenols [1 g cranberry extract per day (206.2 mg polyphenols) for 18 days]. Samples from the simulated ascending, transverse, and descending colon of the dynamic gastrointestinal simulator simgi® were analyzed. Results showed that 67% of the total cranberry polyphenols were recovered after simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Specifically, benzoic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, phenylpropionic acids, phenylacetic acids, and simple phenols were identified. Cranberry feeding modified colonic microbiota composition of Enterococcaceae population significantly. However, increments in microbial-derived short-chain fatty acids, particularly in butyric acid, were observed. Finally, the simgi® effluent during cranberry feeding showed significant antiadhesive activity against uropathogenic Escherichia coli (13.7 ± 1.59 % of inhibition). Understanding the role that gut microbiota plays in cranberry metabolism could help to elucidate its interaction with the human body and explain cranberry protective effects against urinary tract infections.

Piper nigrum L. is commonly used worldwide and its pericarp, stalks, leaves will be major wastes materials. 42 amide alkaloids were identified in black, white pepper and pericarp by UHPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap HRMS method, followed by 40 constituents in stalks and 36 constituents in leaves. 8 amide alkaloids were reported for the first time in P. nigrum. An ultra-high-performance supercritical fluid chromatography (UHPSFC)-MS method was firstly applied to simultaneously determine 9 characteristic constituents (piperine, piperlonguminine, piperanine, pipercallosine, dehydropipernonaline, pipernonatine, retrofractamide B, pellitorine and guineensine). The most abundant compound in each extract was piperine with a concentration from 0.10 to 12.37 mg/g of dry weight. The fruits, pericarp and leaves extracts could improve cell viability in 6-OHDA-induced SK-N-SH and SH-SY5Y cells. The results showed the characteristics of amide alkaloids of different parts of P. nigrum and evaluated their neuroprotective activities.

Maoto, a traditional Japanese medicine (Kampo), is widely used to treat upper respiratory tract infections, including influenza virus infection. Although maoto is known to inhibit pro-inflammatory responses in a rodent model of acute inflammation, its underlying mechanism remains to be determined. In this study, we investigated the involvement of immune responses and noradrenergic function in the inhibitory action of maoto. In a mouse model of polyI:C-induced acute inflammation, maoto was administered orally in conjunction with intraperitoneal injection of PolyI:C (6 mg/kg), and blood was collected after 2 h for measurement of plasma cytokines by ELISA. Maoto significantly decreased PolyI:C-induced TNF-α levels and increased IL-10 production. Neither pretreatment with IL-10 neutralizing antibodies nor T-cell deficiency using nude mice modified the inhibitory effect of maoto, indicating that the anti-inflammatory effects of maoto are independent of IL-10 and T cells. Furthermore, the inhibitory effects of maoto on PolyI:C-induced TNF-α production were not observed in ex vivo splenocytes, suggesting that maoto does not act directly on inflammatory cells. Lastly, pretreatment with a ß-adrenergic receptor antagonist partially cancelled the anti-inflammatory effects of maoto. Collectively, these results suggest that maoto mediates its anti-inflammatory effects via ß-adrenergic receptors in vivo.

In this work, new approaches for the green extraction of polyphenols from sour cherry pomace were explored. Three Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) systems based on choline chloride (ChCl) as a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and malic acid, urea, and fructose (MalA, Ur, and Fru) as hydrogen bond donors (HBD) were used. NADES systems were prepared by heating and stirring (H&S), ultrasound (US), and microwave (MW) methods. It was found that MW-assisted preparation was the fastest requiring less than 30 s. Polyphenol extraction from cherry pomace was performed also by three mentioned methods, and compared with conventional methods. MW extraction was the most rapid with less than 5 min necessary for the extract preparation. All three NADES systems were highly efficient for anthocyanin extraction, but the most efficient was ChCl:MalA system. Extract based on ChCl:MalA system was for 62.33% more efficient for anthocyanin extraction comparing with the conventional solvent.

There is growing interest in chitosan-based intelligent packaging films for monitoring food quality. However, practical application of these biopolymeric films has been limited by their poor physical and mechanical attributes. Herein, a versatile colorimetric indicator film was developed based on chitosan (CHI) and broken Riceberry phenolic extract (RPE). The effects of RPE fortification on the microstructure, physical, and functional attributes of the CHI films were comprehensively evaluated. The results revealed that CHI-RPE films exhibited increased hydrophobicity, mechanical resistance, thermal stability, barrier properties, and antioxidant activity compared to plain CHI film. The CHI-RPE films were cytocompatible. Notably, CHI-RPE film also produced intense naked-eye detectable colorimetric response to pH (2-12) variation and volatile ammonia. When enclosed with fresh shrimp, CHI-RPE film changed from orange-red to yellow in response to shrimp spoilage. Thus, CHI-RPE film has high potential for fabricating pragmatic, smart packaging labels for on-site visual detection of freshness in seafood products.

The Citrus genus is a good source of dietary flavonoids, which have many health benefits. As a representative citrus fruit, the flavonoids composition in Shatianyu (Citrus grandis L. Osbeck) pulp remains to be investigated. In the present study, 11 flavonoids were isolated and identified from Shatianyu pulp flavonoid extracts (SPFEs). Among them, 4 flavonoids were previously undescribed and 2 flavonoids were firstly isolated from pummelo. The cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) of isolated compounds were evaluated. Naringin and rhoifolin showed the highest ORAC activity, and the presence of a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl or a 4'-glucose decreased the ORAC activity of flavonoids. The contribution of isolated flavonoids to the holistic antioxidant activity of SPFEs was determined by an online knockout method. Melitidin, bergamjuicin and naringin contributed most to ORAC activity, while bergamjuicin, melitidin and apigenin-4'-O-ß-d-glucopyranosyl-7-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 â†’ 2)-[6″-O-(3- hydroxy-3-methylgltaryl)]-ß-d-glucopyranoside contributed most to CAA activity.

This research established the optimal conditions for infusion extraction (IE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of bioactive components from laver (Porphyra dentata) using response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network coupled with genetic algorithm (RSM-ANN-GA). The variables, temperatures (60, 80, and 100 ℃) and times (10, 15, and 20 min) were designed to optimise total phenolic, total flavonoid, total amino acid, a* value, and R-phycoerythrin content of laver extract. The optimised condition for IE and UAE was achieved at 60 ℃ for 18.08 min and 80.66℃ for 14.76 min in RSM while showing 60 ℃ for 19 min and 80℃ for 15 min in the RSM-ANN-GA mode, respectively. Results revealed that RSM-ANN-GA provided better predictability and greater accuracy than the RSM model and laver extract from UAE gave the higher values of responses compared to those from IE. These findings highlight the high-efficient extraction method along with better statistical approach.
