The Souss region in Morocco is known nationally and internationally for its essential knowledge of traditional herbal medicine and the cultural heritage of nutrition. The endemic species Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels is an important crucial plant used by the local population to treat many diseases and prepare some authentic foods. To identify the therapeutic uses of the Argan tree [Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels] and their benefits in preparing authentic foods, the survey was conducted using semi-structured questionnaires. We have achieved 450 interviews with traditional health practitioners and knowledgeable villagers. In the region of Chtouka Aït Baha and Tiznit (Western Anti-Atlas). In parallel with this survey, we collected some old local manuscripts from conventional practitioners in the region. The data obtained were analyzed using specific ethnobotanical indices such as Use Value (UV), Fidelity Level (FL), and Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC). In parallel, we analyzed the nutritional value of some authentic foods derived the argan oil (Amlou, Tagoulla, and Labsis). All 450 interviewees use the argan oil in food or for the preparation of their authentic foods derived (Amlou, Tagoulla, and Labsis); among them, 100 persons use Argan, in addition to food, in the treatment of various diseases with UV and RFC at 1.94 and 0.22, respectively. Among eight treated diseases by argan tree, the treatment of skin and subcutaneous diseases had a very highly significant value of the FL index (98%). Similarly, the analysis of the manuscripts collected in the study area revealed an ancient therapeutic use of the argan tree. The results also show that the Argan oil extracted from the seed is used to prepare authentic foods with significant nutritional value, especially Amlou.


A região de Souss em Marrocos é conhecida nacional e internacionalmente pelo seu conhecimento essencial da medicina tradicional à base de plantas e pela herança cultural da nutrição. A espécie endêmica Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels é uma importante planta crucial utilizada pela população local para tratar muitas doenças e preparar alguns alimentos autênticos. Para identificar os usos terapêuticos da árvore de argan [Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels] e seus benefícios na preparação de alimentos autênticos, a pesquisa foi realizada por meio de questionários semiestruturados. Conseguimos 450 entrevistas com profissionais de saúde tradicionais e aldeões experientes na região de Chtouka Aït Baha e Tiznit (Anti-Atlas Ocidental). Paralelamente a esta pesquisa, coletamos alguns manuscritos locais antigos de praticantes convencionais da região. Ozone gas is considered as a safe antimicrobial agent in food industries. Here, we evaluated the antifungal and antiaflatoxigenic activities of ozone against fungal contamination in nuts. The most predominant fungal genera in nuts were Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium, and Rhizopus. Ozone (4 ppm) significantly reduced the fungal sporulation of A. flavus and their aflatoxin production. Interestingly, ozone treatment of nuts reduced the total fungal count and increased aflatoxins degradation by approximately 95% and 85%, respectively. Ozone displayed high efficiency to increase the permeability of cell membrane and injury of cell wall of fungi. Increasing the exposure time of ozone in nuts up to 180 minutes showed to reduce the total lipid, carbohydrates, and protein by around 41.2%, 42.7% and 38.4% respectively, in pistachio, almond and peanuts. In conclusion, ozonation is a suitable decontaminating approach for reducing the microbial load in nuts, when used with suitable exposure time.


O gás ozônio é considerado um agente antimicrobiano seguro em indústrias alimentícias. Aqui, avaliamos as atividades antifúngicas e antiaflatoxigênicas do ozônio contra a contaminação fúngica em nozes. Os gêneros fúngicos mais predominantes em nozes foram Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium e Rhizopus. O ozônio (4 ppm) reduziu significativamente a esporulação fúngica de A. flavus e sua produção de aflatoxinas. Curiosamente, o tratamento de nozes com ozônio reduziu a contagem total de fungos e aumentou a degradação de aflatoxinas em aproximadamente 95% e 85%, respectivamente. O ozônio apresentou alta eficiência para aumentar a permeabilidade da membrana celular e a lesão da parede celular dos fungos. O aumento do tempo de exposição do ozônio em nozes em até 180 minutos levou à redução do total de lipídios, carboidratos e proteínas em 41,2%, 42,7% e 38,4%, respectivamente, em pistache, amêndoa e amendoim. Em conclusão, a ozonização é uma abordagem de descontaminação adequada para reduzir a carga microbiana em nozes, quando usada com tempo de exposição adequado.

BACKGROUND: Food categorization and nutrient profiling are labor intensive, time consuming, and costly tasks, given the number of products and labels in large food composition databases and the dynamic food supply. OBJECTIVES: This study used a pretrained language model and supervised machine learning to automate food category classification and nutrition quality score prediction based on manually coded and validated data, and compared prediction results with models using bag-of-words and structured nutrition facts as inputs for predictions. METHODS: Food product information from University of Toronto Food Label Information and Price Database 2017 (n = 17,448) and University of Toronto Food Label Information and Price Database 2020 (n = 74,445) databases were used. Health Canada's Table of Reference Amounts (TRA) (24 categories and 172 subcategories) was used for food categorization and the Food Standards of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) nutrient profiling system was used for nutrition quality score evaluation. TRA categories and FSANZ scores were manually coded and validated by trained nutrition researchers. A modified pretrained sentence-Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers model was used to encode unstructured text from food labels into lower-dimensional vector representations, followed by supervised machine learning algorithms (i.e., elastic net, k-Nearest Neighbors, and XGBoost) for multiclass classification and regression tasks. RESULTS: Pretrained language model representations utilized by the XGBoost multiclass classification algorithm reached overall accuracy scores of 0.98 and 0.96 in predicting food TRA major and subcategories, outperforming bag-of-words methods. For FSANZ score prediction, our proposed method reached a similar prediction accuracy (R2: 0.87 and MSE: 14.4) compared with bag-of-words methods (R2: 0.72-0.84; MSE: 30.3-17.6), whereas structured nutrition facts machine learning model performed the best (R2: 0.98; MSE: 2.5). The pretrained language model had a higher generalizable ability on the external test datasets than bag-of-words methods. CONCLUSIONS: Our automation achieved high accuracy in classifying food categories and predicting nutrition quality scores using text information found on food labels. This approach is effective and generalizable in a dynamic food environment, where large amounts of food label data can be obtained from websites.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional quality, and health and climate impacts are important considerations in the design of sustainable diets. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between diets varying in nutrient density and climate impact and MI and stroke HRs. METHODS: Dietary data of 41,194 women and 39,141 men (35-65 y) who participated in a Swedish population-based cohort study were employed. Nutrient density was calculated using the Sweden-adapted Nutrient Rich Foods 11.3 index. Dietary climate impact was calculated with data from life cycle assessments, including greenhouse gas emissions from primary production to industry gate. HRs and 95% CIs for MI and stroke were assessed with multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression, comparing a least-desirable diet scenario reference group (lower nutrient density, higher climate impact) with three diet groups that varied with respect to higher/lower nutrient density and higher/lower climate impact. RESULTS: Median follow-up time from the baseline study visit to MI or stroke diagnosis was 15.7 y for women and 12.8 y for men. The MI hazard was significantly higher for the men with diets of lower nutrient density and lower climate impact (HR: 1.19; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.33; P = 0.004), compared with the reference group. No significant association with MI was observed for any of the diet groups of women. No significant association with stroke was observed among any of the diet groups of women or men. CONCLUSIONS: The results among men suggest some adverse health effects for men when diet quality is not considered in the pursuit of more climate-sustainable diets. For women, no significant associations were detected. The mechanism underlying this association for men needs further investigation.

In this study, the content of main nutrients in 'QianFu No. 4' were significantly higher than 'QianMei 419.'Transcriptome and proteome were combined to provide new insight of the molecular mechanisms linked to nutritional quality of 'QianFu No. 4' and 'QianMei 419' by leaf function analysis, RNA sequencing and isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification techniques.A total of 23,813 genes and 361 proteins exhibited differential expression level in 'QianMei 419' when compared with 'QianFu No. 4'. These genes and proteins revealed that the pathway of flavonoids biosynthesis, caffeine metabolism, theanine biosynthesis and amino acid metabolism were linked to nutritional quality of tea. Our results provided transcriptomics and proteomics information with respect to the molecular mechanisms of nutritional changes of tea, identified key genes and proteins that associated with the metabolism and accumulation of nutrients, and helped clarify the molecular mechanisms of nutrient differences.

Nutrient profiling and front-of-pack labeling (FOPL) have been developed to categorize food products as more or less healthy based on their nutrient content and to easily communicate this information to consumers. The goal is to change individual food choices toward a healthier diet. Since global climate change has recently become an urgent matter, this paper also aims to investigate the correlations between different food health scales, including some FOPLs currently adopted by one or more countries, and several sustainability indicators. For this purpose, a food sustainability composite index has been developed to summarize environmental indicators and compare food scales. Results indicate, as expected, that well-known healthy and sustainable diets are strongly correlated with both environmental indicators and the composite index, while FOPLs based on portions or on 100 g show moderate and weak correlation values, respectively. Within-category analysis has not found any associations that explain these results. Hence, 100 g standard, on which FOPLs are usually developed, seems not to be the ideal basis for developing a label that aspires to communicate healthiness and sustainability in a unique format, as required by the need for simple messaging. On the contrary, FOPLs based on portions appear to be more likely to achieve this goal.

Carbohydrate foods (≥40% energy from carbohydrates) are the main source of energy in the US diet. In contrast to national-level dietary guidance, many regularly consumed carbohydrate foods are low in fiber and whole grains but high in added sugar, sodium, and/or saturated fat. Given the important contribution of higher-quality carbohydrate foods to affordable healthy diets, new metrics are needed to convey the concept of carbohydrate quality to policymakers, food industry stakeholders, health professionals, and consumers. The recently developed Carbohydrate Food Quality Scoring System is well aligned with multiple key healthy messages on nutrients of public health concern from the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Two models are described in a previously published paper: one for all non-grain carbohydrate-rich foods (e.g., fruits, vegetables, legumes) known as the Carbohydrate Food Quality Score-4 (CFQS-4), and one for grain foods only known as the Carbohydrate Food Quality Score-5 (CFQS-5). These CFQS models provide a new tool that can guide policy, programs, and people towards improved carbohydrate food choices. Specifically, the CFQS models represent a way to unify and reconcile diverse ways to describe different types of carbohydrate-rich foods (e.g., refined vs. whole, starchy vs. non-starchy, dark green vs. red/orange) and make for more useful and informative messaging that better aligns with a food's nutritional and/or health contributions. The present paper's aims are to show that the CFQS models can inform future dietary guidelines and help support carbohydrate food recommendations with other health messages aimed at promoting foods that are nutrient-dense, fiber-rich, and low in added sugar.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of sugarcane tops (STs) and napiergrass (NG) silage on fermentative quality, nutritional value and milk yield in water buffaloes. Silage were prepared either conventionally without ST (C) or mixed with 25% (S1), 50% (S2), and 75% (S3) ST based on fresh matter. Twenty-eight lactating buffaloes were divided into four groups with seven replicates and fed four experimental diets containing the corresponding silages. The S3 silage fermented well with a higher (P < 0.05) lactic acid content and lower (P < 0.05) pH and ammonia-N level than those of other mixed silage. Silage with increasing ST proportions showed a significant increase (P < 0.05) in the apparent digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, organic matter, and gross energy. As a result, water buffalo fed S3 silage increased dry matter intake (P < 0.05) and tended to have higher milk yield and feed efficiency as compared with the C group. Our study indicates that adding ST improves NG silage fermentation and enhances the nutrient digestibility and milk production in water buffaloes, and mixing ratio of 25%NG and 75%ST had the highest lactate fermentation quality and presented a high feed value.

BACKGROUND: Nutrient information used to code dietary intakes in the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) may not be reflective of the current Canadian food supply and could result in inaccurate evaluations of nutrient exposures. OBJECTIVE: To compare the nutritional compositions of foods in the CCHS 2015 Food and Ingredient Details (FID) file (n = 2,785) to a large representative Canadian database of branded food and beverage products (Food Label Information Program, FLIP) collected in 2017 (n = 20,625). METHOD: Food products in the FLIP database were matched to equivalent generic foods from the FID file to create new aggregate food profiles based on FLIP nutrient data. Mann Whitney U tests were used to compare nutrient compositions between the FID and FLIP food profiles. RESULTS: In most food categories and nutrients there were no statistically significant differences between the FLIP and FID food profiles. Nutrients with the largest differences included: saturated fats (n = 9 of 21 categories), fiber (n = 7), cholesterol (n = 6), and total fats (n = 4). The meats and alternatives category had the most nutrients with significant differences. CONCLUSION: These results can be used to prioritize future updates and collections of food composition databases, while also providing insights for interpreting CCHS 2015 nutrient intakes.

The objective of this study was to improve the comprehensive rate of utilization of rapeseed (Brassica napus subsp. napus L.), Myriophyllum (Myriophyllum spicatum L.) spicatum and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), reduce resource waste and environmental pollution. In this experiment, the effects of different proportions of the mixed silage of rapeseed and alfalfa or M. spicatum on the fermentation and nutritional quality were analyzed and further improved the quality of mixed silage using molasses and urea. Rapeseed was separately silaged with alfalfa and M. spicatum based on the ratios of 3:7, 5:5 and 7:3. After 60 days of mixed silage, the fermentation index and nutrient contents were measured to explore the appropriate ratio of mixed silage. The mixing ratio of rapeseed and alfalfa was better at 3:7: The contents of NH3-N/TN (4.61%), lactic acid (96.46 g·kg-1 dry matter [DM]) were significantly higher (p < 0.05). The crude protein content (118.20 g·kg-1 DM) was the highest (p < 0.05), while the pH (4.56) was the lowest when the mixing ratio of rapeseed and M. spicatum was 7:3. Considering the fermentation and nutrition quality, it is suggested that rapeseed and alfalfa should be mixed as silage at a ratio of 3:7 with 3% molasses and 0.3% urea, and rapeseed and M. spicatum should be mixed as silage at a ratio of 7:3 with 3% molasses.

The rise in online food delivery (OFD) applications has increased access to a myriad of ready-to-eat options, which may lead to unhealthier food choices. Our objective was to assess the nutritional profile of popular menu items available through OFD applications in Bangkok, Thailand. We selected the top 40 popular menu items from three of the most commonly used OFD applications in 2021. Each menu item was collected from the top 15 restaurants in Bangkok for a total of 600 items. Nutritional contents were analysed by a professional food laboratory in Bangkok. Descriptive statistics were employed to describe the nutritional content of each menu item, including energy, fat, sodium, and sugar content. We also compared nutritional content to the World Health Organization's recommended daily intake values. The majority of menu items were considered unhealthy, with 23 of the 25 ready-to-eat menu items containing more than the recommended sodium intake for adults. Eighty percent of all sweets contained approximately 1.5 times more sugar than the daily recommendation. Displaying nutrition facts in the OFD applications for menu items and providing consumers with filters for healthier options are required to reduce overconsumption and improve consumer food choice.

Front-of-package nutrition labelling (FOPNL) is known as an effective tool that can encourage healthier food choices and food reformulation. A very interesting type of FOPNL is grading schemes. Our objective was to compare two market-implemented grading schemes-European Nutri-Score (NS) and Australian Health Star Rating (HSR), using large Slovenian branded foods database. NS and HSR were used for profiling 17,226 pre-packed foods and drinks, available in Slovenian food supply dataset (2020). Alignment between models was evaluated with agreement (% of agreement and Cohen's Kappa) and correlation (Spearman rho). The 12-month nationwide sales-data were used for sale-weighing, to address market-share differences. Study results indicated that both models have good discriminatory ability between products based on their nutritional composition. NS and HSR ranked 22% and 33% of Slovenian food supply as healthy, respectively. Agreement between NS and HSR was strong (70%, κ = 0.62) with a very strong correlation (rho = 0.87). Observed profiling models were most aligned within food categories Beverages and Bread and bakery products, while less aligned for Dairy and imitates and Edible oils and emulsions. Notable disagreements were particularly observed in subcategories of Cheese and processed cheeses (8%, κ = 0.01, rho = 0.38) and Cooking oils (27%, κ = 0.11, rho = 0.40). Further analysis showed that the main differences in Cooking oils were due to olive oil and walnut oil, which are favoured by NS and grapeseed, flaxseed and sunflower oil that are favoured by HSR. For Cheeses and cheese products, we observed that HSR graded products across the whole scale, with majority (63%) being classified as healthy (≥3.5 *), while NS mostly graded lower scores. Sale-weighting analyses showed that offer in the food supply does not always reflect the sales. Sale-weighting increased overall agreement between profiles from 70% to 81%, with notable differences between food categories. In conclusion, NS and HSR were shown as highly compliant FOPNLs with few divergences in some subcategories. Even these models do not always grade products equally high, very similar ranking trends were observed. However, the observed differences highlight the challenges of FOPNL ranking schemes, which are tailored to address somewhat different public health priorities in different countries. International harmonization can support further development of grading type nutrient profiling models for the use in FOPNL, and make those acceptable for more stake-holders, which will be crucial for their successful regulatory implementation.

Preventing the rise in obesity is a global public health priority. Neighbourhood environments can help or undermine people's efforts to manage their weight, depending on availability of nutritious and nutrient-poor 'discretionary' foods. The proportion of household food budgets spent on eating outside the home is increasing. To inform nutrition policy at a local level, an objective assessment of the nutritional quality of foods and beverages on food service menus that is context-specific is needed. This study describes the development and piloting of the Menu Assessment Scoring Tool (MAST), used to assess the nutritional quality of food service menus in Australia. The MAST is a desk-based tool designed to objectively assess availability of nutrient-poor and absence of nutritious food and beverages on food service menus. A risk assessment approach was applied, using the best available evidence in an iterative way. MAST scores for 30 food service outlets in one Local Government Authority in Perth, Western Australia highlight opportunities for improvements. MAST is the first tool of its kind in Australia to assess the nutritional quality of food service menus. It was practical and feasible to use by public health nutritionists/dietitians and can be adapted to suit other settings or countries.

Obesity and diabetes have emerged as an increasing threat to public health, and the consumption of added sugar can contribute to their development. Though nutritional content information can positively influence consumption behavior, added sugar is not currently required to be disclosed in all countries. However, a growing proportion of the world's population has access to mobile devices, which allow for the development of digital solutions to support health-related decisions and behaviors. To test whether advances in computational science can be leveraged to develop an accurate and scalable model to estimate the added sugar content of foods based on their nutrient profile, we collected comprehensive nutritional information, including information on added sugar content, for 69,769 foods. Eighty percent of this data was used to train a gradient boosted tree model to estimate added sugar content, while 20% of it was held out to assess the predictive accuracy of the model. The performance of the resulting model showed 93.25% explained variance per default portion size (84.32% per 100 kcal). The mean absolute error of the estimate was 0.84 g per default portion size (0.81 g per 100 kcal). This model can therefore be used to deliver accurate estimates of added sugar through digital devices in countries where the information is not disclosed on packaged foods, thus enabling consumers to be aware of the added sugar content of a wide variety of foods.

Tuscan kale was grown aeroponically with 5, 30 and 60 min nutrient spraying intervals (defined as 5 minNSIs, 30 minNSIs and 60 minNSIs). Four weeks after transplanting, some 5 minNSI plants were transferred to a 60 minNSI (5 minNSI → 60 minNSI) and 90 minNSI (5 minNSI → 90 minNSI) for one more week. Significantly lower light-saturated rates of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were observed for plants grown with a 60 minNSI than with a 5 minNSI. However, all plants had similar internal CO2 concentrations and transpiration rates. Reduced light use efficiency but increased energy dissipation was observed in plants grown in a 60 minNSI. A higher nitrate concentration was observed in 60 minNSI plants compared to 5 minNSI and 30 minNSI plants, while all plants had similar concentrations of total reduced nitrogen, leaf soluble protein and Rubisco protein. Plants grown with prolonged NSIs (deficit irrigation) had lower biomass accumulation due to the inhibition of leaf initiation and expansion compared to 5 minNSIs. However, there was no substantial yield penalty in 5 minNSI → 60 minNSI plants. Enhancements in nutritional quality through deficit irrigation at pre-harvest were measured by proline and total soluble sugar. In conclusion, it is better to grow Tuscan kale with a 5 minNSI for four weeks followed by one week with a 60 minNSI before harvest to reduce water usage, yield penalty and enhance nutritional quality.

With the widespread applications of manufactured nanoparticles (NPs), there are increasing concerns about their potential adverse effects on the environment and living systems. Many studies demonstrated that NPs could significantly affect the growth and development of crop plants. However, knowledge regarding the impacts of NPs on crop quality is rather limited. In this study, the effects of CeO2 NPs (25, 75, and 225 mg Ce/kg) and CeCl3 (25 mg Ce/kg) on the nutritional components of soil-cultivated corn and soybean plants were evaluated. Both treatments tended to decrease the dry weight of grain per plant, while only 225 mg/kg CeO2 NPs on soybean and CeCl3 on corn showed statistical significance compared with the respective control. CeO2 NPs at 225 mg/kg significantly decreased the content of starch in the corn kernels by 18.2% but increased total phenols in soybean seeds by 18.4%. Neither CeO2 NPs nor CeCl3 significantly affected the contents of minerals in corn kernels except for Zn. However, in the case of soybean, the two treatments tended to decrease the contents of P, Zn, Mn, and Mo but increase the content of S. Overall, the results suggest that CeO2 NPs and Ce3+ ions showed similar but not identical effects on corn and soybean plants. CeO2 NPs affect the nutritional quality of crop plants in a species-dependent manner.

The extent to which different front-of-pack nutrition labels (FOPNLs) agree or contradict each other has been insufficiently investigated. Considering the 2020 proposal from the European Commission to create a harmonized FOPNL, the aim of this study was to assess agreements and disagreements between two FOPNL schemes-the Keyhole and the Nutri-Score-in a Swedish context. The current Keyhole criteria and the updated Nutri-Score 2022 algorithm were applied to 984 food items and their nutrient compositions, obtained from the food database of the Swedish Food Agency. Agreements (Keyhole-eligible and Nutri-Score A or B; or not Keyhole-eligible and Nutri-Score C, D, or E) and disagreements (Keyhole-eligible and Nutri-Score C, D, or E, or not Keyhole-eligible and Nutri-Score A or B) were calculated as percentages for all items and by food group. An agreement was found for 81% of included items. The lowest level of agreement was found for the groups of flour, grains, and rice (62% agreement) and for plant-based meat and fish analogues (33% agreement). There is generally a good level of agreement between the Keyhole and the Nutri-Score for food items on the Swedish market. Large disagreements found for plant-based meat and fish analogues, and products based on cereals/grains, highlight important considerations for the development of a harmonized FOPNL within Europe.

Ulcerative colitis patients often attribute their symptoms to specific dietary products. Therefore, even though there are no specific dietary recommendations, these patients commonly have dietary restrictions, often with no consultation from their physician or dietitian, as they believe that they may be beneficial for them. The aim of the study was to analyze the nutritional value of diets and food choices in Polish female ulcerative colitis individuals, in comparison with a pair-matched control sample. The study was conducted on a group of 44 Polish female ulcerative colitis individuals being in remission and 44 individuals within a pair-matched control sample, matched by their age and concurrent diseases, excluding those resulting from ulcerative colitis. The analysis of the diet was based on the self-reported data, including 3-day dietary records (to assess the intake of nutrients and food products), as well as the simple open-ended question about food products excluded from their diet. It was stated that Polish female ulcerative colitis individuals were characterized by a lower energy value of diet (p = 0.0043), accompanied by the higher proportion of total protein (p = 0.0128) than the pair-matched control sample. As a result of a lower energy value for ulcerative colitis individuals, the intake of numerous nutrients was also lower (p < 0.05); however, after recalculation per 1000 kcal, ulcerative colitis individuals were characterized by higher total protein (p = 0.0121), starch (p = 0.0009), and vitamin B6 intake (p = 0.0319), as well as lower alcohol intake (p = 0.0464). Similarly, as a result of a lower energy value for ulcerative colitis individuals, the intake of numerous foods was also lower (p < 0.05); however, after recalculation per 1000 kcal, ulcerative colitis individuals were characterized by higher meat (p = 0.0058) and potatoes intake (p = 0.0052), as well as lower legumes (p = 0.0301), chocolate sweets (p = 0.0165), and alcoholic beverages intake (p = 0.0062). For chocolate sweets (p = 0.0134) and alcoholic beverages (p = 0.0091), ulcerative colitis individuals were characterized by a higher frequency of declaration of dietary exclusion. At the same time, ulcerative colitis individuals were characterized by a lower frequency of meeting the recommended intake for magnesium (p = 0.0005), iron (p = 0.0189), vitamin E (p = 0.0389), and vitamin B1 (p = 0.0032). It was concluded that even in remission, there is a risk of inadequate consumption, not meeting the recommended intake, and nutritional deficiencies in the population of female ulcerative colitis patients.

Prediction models of different types of forage were developed using a dataset of near-infrared reflectance spectra collected by three handheld NeoSpectra-Scanners and laboratory reference values for neutral detergent fiber (NDF), in vitro digestibility (IVTD), neutral detergent fiber digestibility (NDFD), acid detergent fiber (ADF), acid detergent lignin (ADL), crude protein (CP), Ash, and moisture content (MO) from a total of 555 undried ensiled corn, grass, and alfalfa samples. Data analyses and results of models developed in this study indicated that the scanning method significantly impacted the accuracy of the prediction of forage constituents, and using the NEO instrument with the sliding method improved calibration model performance (p < 0.05) for nearly all constituents. In general, poorer-performing models were more impacted by instrument-to-instrument variability. The exception, however, was moisture content (p = 0.02), where the validation set with an independent instrument resulted in an RMSEP of 2.39 compared to 1.44 where the same instruments were used for both calibration and validation. Validation model performance for NDF, IVTD, NDFD, ADL, ADF, Ash, CP, and moisture content were 4.18, 3.86, 6.14, 1.10, 2.75, 1.42, 2.71, and 1.67 for alfalfa-grass silage samples and 3.22, 2.21, 4.55, 0.38, 2.07, 0.50, 0.51, and 1.62 for corn silage, respectively. Based on the results of this study, the handheld spectrometer would be useful for predicting moisture content in undried and unground alfalfa-grass (R2 = 0.97) and corn (R2 = 0.93) forage samples.

RESUMO

The aim of this Editorial is to give an overview on the multiple aspects of front-of-pack labels (FOPLs) and provide the readers a balanced view of the problems raised in this research field, placing them in a wider context. Furthermore, this editorial paper discusses whether and how the use of FOPLs can promote health status in relation to the individual eating pattern and which should be the next research scenarios to investigate to further improve and integrate these tools.
