Albert Schweitzer e a filosofia da “ética de respeito à vida” / Albert Schweitzer and the philosophy of the “ethics of respect to life”

O nascimento formal da Bioética, uma nova área do conhecimento humano, ocorreu após duas publicações de Potter, pesquisador norte- -americano, no inicio da década de setenta do século passado. Entretanto, o neologismo bioética foi pioneiramente utilizado por Fritz Jahr, na Alemanha, em publicação datada de 1927. O reconhecimento do valor da vida de todas as criaturas do planeta, defendida por Fritz Jahr em seu “imperativo bioético”, também foi foco de reflexões e postura ética por diversos outros autores. Essas contribuições teóricas certamente influenciaram na criação da Bioética potteriana. Um desses autores foi o médico Albert Schweitzer, respeitado como uma das pessoas pela qual a humanidade tem uma dívida de gratidão, principalmente pelo seu incomparável espírito de sacrifício, de filantropia e de compaixão. Recebeu ao longo de sua vida inúmeras homenagens, entre elas, o prêmio Nobel da Paz, em 1952. A vida e a obra de Schweitzer têm reconhecimento universal, mas seus textos sobre filosofía são menos conhecidos. O escopo deste texto é apresentar, ainda que sumariamente, as bases filosóficas – da “Ética de respeito à vida” – e uma breve biografia de um dos homens mais importantes do século XX.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The formal birth of Bioethics, a new area of human knowledge, occurred after two reports by Potter, the North-American researcher, in the beginning of the nineteen seventies. However, the neologism Bioethics was used for the first time by Fritz Jahr, in Germany, in a report of 1927. The recognition of the value of all living creatures in the planet, defended by Fritz Jahr by means of his “bioethical imperative”, was also the focus of reflections and ethic attitudes by several other authors. Those theoretical contributions certainly influenced the creation of the Potterian Bioethics. One of those authors was the physician Albert Schweitzer. He is respected as one of the persons whom humanity owes gratitude, mainly by his incomparable spirit of sacrifice, philanthropy and compassion. In his life he was countless times rendered homage, among them the Nobel Prize of Peace in 1952. The life and work of Schweitzer have universal recognition, but his texts about Philosophy are less known. The aim of this text is to spread, even though summarily, the biography and the philosophical bases of the “Ethics of respect to life” by one of the most important men of the Twentieth century.(AU)
