ABSTRACT
Fasciola hepatica is reported as a trematode of great importance, causing fasciolosis, one of the most neglected zoonotic parasitic diseases in the world. In Brazil, potential losses were estimated at around US$ 210 million per year, only with bovine fasciolosis. The State of Santa Catarina is located in the southern region of Brazil, with more than 4 million ruminant heads. The Planalto Serrano Catarinense is composed of 18 municipalities which have a consolidated agricultural tradition, mainly in extensive ruminant livestock. The objective of the present work was to investigate the occurrence and distribution of autochthonous cases of bovine fasciolosis in the Planalto Serrano, as well as to investigate the presence of vector snails in the region. For this, analyzes were carried out in rural properties in seven municipalities and in three slaughterhouses in the Planalto Serrano. Rural properties were randomly selected and visited, and fecal samples were collected from up to 20 cattle per property, aged over one year, also randomly included. These samples were packed in a thermal box and transported to LAPAR for coproparasitological sedimentation examination. In these properties, active searches were carried out for the gastropod vectors, followed by the morphological identification of the collected specimens was carried out. Also, tracking data of cattle slaughtered in three slaughterhouses in the region, between the years of the 2018 and 2021 were analyzed. In total, there were collections in 102 farms, in seven municipalities, with a total of 1.837 cattle tested. Of these, 178 (9,7%) were positive and autochthonous. From the 670 snails collected, 62 were identified as Pseudosuccinea columella, one of the main vector species of F. hepatica. During the period, 9.826 cattle were slaughtered at the slaughterhouses of which 1.625 (16,5%) were positive and, according to animal movement reports, never left the Serrana Mesoregion. The present study confirmed the presence of autochthonous cases of bovine fasciolosis in municipalities of the Planalto Serrano Catarinense, and verified a high rate of positivity in animals slaughtered in State Inspection slaughterhouses. The snail P. columella, an important intermediate host of the trematode, was identified for the first time in the municipalities of Lages, Capão Alto and Painel. When we compared the prevalence of bovine fasciolosis in vivo with the post mortem positivity index, there was a difference between these results in the municipalities of Bocaina do Sul, Lages, Painel and Urupema (p-value <0.05). There was agreement between these analyzes only in the municipality of Capão Alto (p-value = 0.22), emphasizing the need for field investigation for the proper understanding of the distribution and frequency of this parasite. Therefore, new studies are essential for the evaluation of epidemiological factors important for the occurrence of bovine fasciolosis, contributing to the planning and implementation of efficient measures for disease control and reduction of the economic losses resulting from the parasitosis.
