Background: Liver performs several important functions to the maintenance of physiological mechanisms. Some liver diseases may directly affect anatomical and physiological aspects of this organ, and may lead to a permanent liver injury. In snakes, the most common causes of liver disease are infections, however, approaches on non-infectious liver diseases are scarce. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe macroscopically and microscopically liver alterations in a Boa constrictor amarali snake.Case: A adult male boa (Boa constrictor amarali) snake of 110 cm of length and weight of 3.270 kg from free-living conditions, and without previous history was rescued in an urban area and taken by the Environmental Police to the Laboratory for Teaching and Research in Wild Animals (LAPAS) of the Federal University of Uberlândia’s (UFU) Veterinary Hospital, in Uberlândia MG, Brazil. The animal died and a significant amount of adipose tissue was found throughout the extension of the coelomic cavity at necropsy, limiting the visualization of its internal organs. Fragments of altered organs were collected and packed in a universal collector containing a 10% buffered formalin solution. These samples were sent to the Animal Pathology Laboratory (LPA) of the UFU. Macroscopically, the stomach presented a reddish mucosa, and mucous contents. The liver was pale, with a yellowish color and a friable consistency. Microscopically, dilated hepatic sinusoids filled with red blood cells were observed; the hepatocytes were enlarged, and its cytoplasm were filled with vacuoles of varied sizes that did not stain (severe diffuse lipidosis). It was also found occurrence of multifocal areas with loss of tissue architecture, and hepatocytes in karyolysis, charactering necrosis; and a discrete amount of multifocal mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate (multifocal hepatitis).[...]

Odontogenic tumors producing amyloid are rare neoplasms. Cholangiocarcinomas and fibromas are also referred to as infrequent. The objective of this study was to report the case of a dog, 17 years old, a poodle, who was treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Uberlândia. At necropsy, the animal presented only nodule located in the oral cavity, in the same way, only nodule in the hepatic parenchyma and in addition, multiple masses in the stomach. Microscopically, the histological features were compatible with odontogenic tumor producing amyloid, cholangiocarcinoma and fibroma, respectively. Reports of simultaneous occurrence of distinct tumors are scarce in the literature.

Background: The human epidermal growth factor type 2 (HER2) receptor is a membrane glycoprotein tyrosine kinase. In woman, HER2 expression is diagnosed in 30% of breast carcinomas and it is associated with a worse prognosis, higher rate of recurrence and mortality. In the bitch, the HER2 overexpression in canine mammary tumors is still controversial and the prognostic value remains uncertain. Thus, we aimed to verify the HER2 expression in canine mammary carcinomas and relate it to the type and histological grade, lymph node metastasis and clinical staging. Materials, Methods & Results: Ninety bitches diagnosed with mammary carcinoma were included in this study. The inclusion criteria were bitches with complete clinical examination, thoracic radiographic examination and submitted unilateral or bilateral mastectomy. Ninety-nine samples of mammary carcinoma were used and the fragments of tumor and regional lymph nodes were fixed in 10% neutral formalin for histopathological and immunohistochemistry analysis. The lesions were evaluated by two pathologists and classified according to the type and histological grade. HER2 expression was performed by semi-quantitative analysis of the slides according to the HerceptTestTM (Dako) recommended score. Simple carcinomas were the most frequent (51.51%) followed by complex carcinomas (46.47%) and in situ carcinoma (2.02%). [...](AU)

The hemangioma and hemangiosarcoma are mesenchymal neoplasms from the vascular endothelium, and the dog is the domestic animal more commonly affected. At the veterinary hospital of the Federal University of Uberlândia, we reviewed the files from the Animal Pathology Laboratory from 2002 to 2014. The epidemiological data and the frequency of dogs diagnosed with hemangioma and hemangiosarcoma were verified, correlated, and statistically tested. 64 cases of hemangioma and 128 cases of hemangiosarcoma were identified. For hemangiomas, there was no difference in frequency regarding sex and breed. The cutaneous hemangiomas were more frequent than visceral hemangiomas. Female dogs and adult animals were often affected by hemangiosarcoma, as well as the Pitbull breed. The hemangiosarcomas had been predominantly cutaneous and medium size tumour was the most frequent for this neoplasm.

Later, the data were compared using descriptive statistics and percentage. Of all 6403 records, 70.3% oflymphoma diagnoses were observed by cytology and 29.6% by histopathology. Lymphoma was the second most frequent roundcell tumor in 23.1%. There was no sexual predilection and the adult and elderly dogs represented the most affected age groups. The Pit Bull breed was the most frequent in 28.2% of the cases. In 53.3% of the conclusive cytologic diagnoses without biopsy, thedogs presented lymphadenomegaly in the clinical evaluation. Cytology can be a good tool in the diagnosis of lymphomas, aidedby the physical evaluation of superficial lymph nodes.(AU)

The aim of this study was to compare different complementary diagnostic methods (macroscopic, histological, serological and molecular) of tuberculosis in naturally infected cattle. The study was conducted from samples taken from 40 reagents cattle in cervical comparative intradermal tuberculin test  (ITT). The macroscopic post mortem inspection of carcasses was followed by the collection of nasal swabs, blood and tissue samples (liver, lung and mediastinal lymph node) for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, EnzymeLinked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and histopathologic test with hematoxylineosin (HE) and ZiehlNeelsen (ZN), respectively. Of the 40 cattle slaughtered, 22 (55%) carcasses had macroscopic lesions suggestive of tuberculosis. The histopathology HE identified 13 (32.5%) carcasses with histological changes: 6 (15%) in the mediastinal lymph nodes, 5 (12.5%) in the liver and 3 (7.5%) in the lung. At  ZN, the presence of acidfast bacilli was not detected in any of the samples tested. The ELISA/IDEXX® identified one (2.5%) reagent animal, and the PCR test detected DNA of Mycobacterium bovis in one (2.5%) cow. It is concluded that among the diagnostic methods reviews none was able to detect all animals that were positive in tuberculin test, but the association of different methods can ensure diagnostic accuracy.

The macroscopic post mortem inspection of carcasses was followed by the collection of nasal swabs, blood and tissue samples (liver, lung and mediastinal lymph node) for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and histopathologic test with hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN), respectively. At ZN, the presence of acid-fast bacilli was not detected in any of the samples tested. The ELISA/IDEXX(r) identified one (2.5%) reagent animal, and the PCR test detected DNA of Mycobacterium bovis in one (2.5%) cow. It is concluded that among the diagnostic methods reviews none was able to detect all animals that were positive in tuberculin test, but the association of different methods can ensure diagnostic accuracy.(AU)

It is concluded that among the diagnostic methods reviews none was able to detect all animals that were positive in tuberculin test, but the association of different methods can ensure diagnostic accuracy.(AU)

The aim of the present study is to collect epidemiological data related to the canine mastocytoma, to check if there is relationbetween malignancy and its location and, finally, to compare the methods of histopathological classification according to Patnaiket al. (1984) and Kiupel et al. (2011). Informations were collected from the clinical record of 55 dogs and 60 fragments of skinwith a diagnosis of mast cell tumor were evaluated histologically. It was found that the occurrence of cutaneous mast cell tumorsis not influenced by gender and race, but dogs without defined breed and boxers are most affected. There is not a well-definedsusceptible age, but the most mast cell tumors in dogs often 8 to 9 years old. The highest affected region was inguinal (50%) andhead proved a region with higher malignancy. Using the classification Patnaik et al. (1984) there was a significant difference betweenthe histopathological ratings mastocytoma evaluated by different pathologists, which did not occur using the classification Kiupel etal. (2011). It can be said then that the classification Kiupel et al. (2011) generates less divergence in the diagnosis, demonstratinga simple and effective method for histopathological evaluation of mastocytoma.(AU)

Background: Canine visceral leishmaniasis is a chronic and endemic disease, widespread zoonotic infection with a greatimpact on public health. The domestic dog is the main reservoir and also a source of infection for humans in the urbanenvironment. Canine visceral leishmaniasis is a multisystem disease that affects several organs, mainly the heart. The aimof this study was to verify the presence of amastigotes of Leishmania chagasi in myocardium of dogs naturally infectedby immunohistochemistry. In addition, to correlate the number of parasitized cells with the intensity of the inflammation, the macroscopic and microscopic lesions.Materials, Methods & Results: It were used 52 dogs positive for leishmaniasis diagnosed by clinical examination, IndirectImmunofluorescence (RIFI), ELISA and cytological analysis of popliteal lymph nodes. The positive animals were euthanized and submitted a necropsy. Following necropsy, the macroscopic analysis was done, and samples from the region ofthe cardiac apex were collected at the transition between the two ventricles. Fragments of heart tissues were fixed in 10%neutral formalin for histopathological and immunohistochemistry analysis. The inflammatory process of the myocardiumand lesions semi-quantitatively scored for myocardial injury on a scale of 0 to 3: (0) absent, (1) mild = small focal lesions,(2) moderate = larger, multifocal lesions and (3) severe = affecting most areas with coalescence. On immunostaining, the animal was classified according to the parasite load: - (no microorganism), mild (1-100 microorganisms), moderate(101-300), intense parasitism (> 300). At the macroscopically analysis, 33 animals (63.46%) had at least one lesion. Theconcentric hypertrophy left ventricular was the most...(AU)
