We evaluated the effects of nulliparous, primiparous, and multiparous conditions on the estrus and pregnancy rates in females that did not show estrus but were treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) at the time of timed artificial insemination (TAI). Nelore females (n = 531) were allocated according to the following categories: nulliparous (n = 144), primiparous (n = 132), and multiparous (n = 255). The animals received a conventional TAI protocol, and estrus expression was identified by the absence of paint in the sacrococcygeal region on the day of TAI. Females that did not show estrus were treated with 10 µg of GnRH together with insemination. The rates of estrus and pregnancy were analyzed using a logistic regression model (P < 0.05). The estrus expression was lower (P = 0.006) in the primiparous (61.36%) group than in the nulliparous (76.39%) and multiparous (75.69%) groups. Similar pregnancy rates were observed in females that showed estrus (nulliparous 84.54%, primiparous 86.42%, and multiparous 80.31%; P = 0.39) and in females that did not show estrus and received GnRH (nulliparous 41.18%, primiparous 56.86%, and multiparous 58.06%; P = 0.24). The total pregnancy rates were also similar (P = 0.98) among the categories (nulliparous 74.3%, primiparous 75.0%, and multiparous 74.9%). The primiparous females had a lower rate of estrus, and the pregnancy rates were similar among the categories that received GnRH.(AU)

The fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) is a biotechnique with numerous advantages for cattle production. In order to perform the FTAI, the cows must receive a pharmacological protocol to induce ovulation in a synchronized way. This protocol begins with the insertion of a device impregnated with progesterone that must remain in the vaginal fundus of the cow for a specific period of time. This report aims at describing the removal of a progesterone impregnated implant that was found in the abdominal cavity of a heifer. During a routine reproductive service in a rural property, a recently acquired Jersey heifer, with history of having been submitted to FTAI, was evaluated for pregnancy diagnosis. At the exam, it was observed that the heifer was not pregnant and presented an ovarian follicular cyst. The heifer was then submitted to FTAI again, where an implant was inserted and removed. This made the cyst to recede, and upon subsequent insemination, the applicator was not able to pass the cervix. Twenty days after insemination, the heifer was in estrus and when it was evaluated for insemination, a loose implant was identified in the abdominal cavity of the heifer. A laparotomy was performed through the left flank and the implant was removed. After recovery from the surgery, the heifer was inseminated again and became pregnant. The FTAI protocols should only be carried out by trained professionals to avoid problems such as the one presented herein, where an implant was found in the abdominal cavity of a heifer.(AU)

Background: Laparoscopy provides good visualization of horses abdominal cavity, besides providing minimal invasiveness and meticulous manipulation intra-abdominal organs. Laparoscopy is suitable for both diagnosing and treating acute abdomen in horses. The purpose of this study was to report a successful case of laparoscopic-assisted surgery for treating sand impaction in a horse.Case: A 3-year-old horse, weighing 460 kg, was admitted following chronic intermittent episodes of diarrhea and colic. Physical exam revealed mild abdominal pain and liquid/pasty diarrhea. There was negative survey of gastrointestinal helminthes and microbiological analyses. Fecal sedimentation test revealed sand impaction. Surgical approach was opted for both accomplishment of the abdominal exploration and resolution of the impactation. The patient was anesthetized and positioned in dorsal recumbency. Laparoscopy was performed through an 11-mm trocar placed right cranially to the umbilicus. There were no apparent adhesions, bowel inflammation nor visceral displacement. A 15-cm celiotomy was carried out caudally to the umbilicus, under laparoscopic guidance, for initial inspection of the gastrointestinal tract. Incision enlargement was required for exteriorizing the pelvic flexure. Afterwards, enterotomy was carried out for drainage of the impactating content, followed by enterorraphy. The pelvic flex...(AU)
