Mammary tumors are the most common in bitches, and bone and pulmonary metastases are not well described. Adenosquamous mammary carcinoma is a rare tumor that can be classified as a type of metaplastic tumor. This report describes the clinical and histopathological findings of this atypical presentation of mammary carcinoma in an 11-year-old, spayed, Poodle. Surgery was performed to remove malignant mammary nodules with a provisional diagnosis of carcinoma on cytologic examination. Thirteen months later, the dog returned showing left pelvic limb lameness that had persisted for 6 months prior to the consultation. The patient showed right pelvic limb lameness and a mass in the same limb. Radiographs of the affected limb revealed a pathological fracture in the femoral diaphysis and proliferation of the periosteum. After clinical staging, a left pelvic limb amputation was performed. A diagnosis of grade II adenosquamous mammary carcinoma was made through histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Although uncommon, bone and pulmonary metastases from mammary tumors, such as adenosquamous carcinoma, can be considered differential diagnoses for bony tumors. This report highlights the aggressive nature and significant metastatic potential of the adenosquamous carcinoma.

It was aimed to describe the clinical and histopathological characteristics of a case of sarcoid tumor in an adult, mixed-breed female cat, with a history of a small increase of volume on the ear. At physical examination, no alteration was found with the exception of the presence of a rounded dermal nodule of 3.0 x 1.5 x 0.5 cm, ulcerated, well-circumscribed, pedunculated, pinkish, solid-elastic, mobile and painless, located on the skin of the border of the auricular pavilion. In the cytological examination of the nodule, the involvement of a benign mesenchymal neoplasia was found. Furthermore, alterations in the hematological examinations were not observed, nor in the imaging tests, and the serological analyses for infection by the leukemia and immunodeficiency were negative. The surgical excision of the nodule was performed, and then the nodule was submitted to histopathologic examination. Microscopically, was verified superficial and deep dermis distended by a non-encapsulated nodule, covered by intact skin, constituted by fibroblasts disposed in random beams predominantly spaced, at times, interspersed by collagen fibers; epidermis with focally extensive acanthosis, projecting papillae in the direction of the superficial dermis. Furthermore, was observed accentuated orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis and, in occasional vessels, the presence of a discreet lymphoplasmocitary

Background: The cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is considered to be a frequent neoplasm in dogs, however, its origin in ocular annexes, especially in relation to the conjuctival location, is a rare finding in dogs. Therefore, it wasaimed to report the occurrence of a multicentric SCC, with the involvement of ocular annexes in a dog, emphasizing itsclinical characteristics and histopathological findings.Case: A 6-year-old non-castrated white-coated Pitbull dog was attended, with a history of increased volume and bloodysecretion in the left eye, with an evolution of approximately six months. By means of general physical examination, ulcerated lesions in the foreskin and scrotum were found. During the ophthalmologic examination was identified an extensiveand irregular exophytic mass, of a reddish color and with a cauliflower-like appearance, located in the inferior bulbarconjunctiva and third eyelid of the left eye, accompanied by a large quantity of piosanguinolenta secretion, mainly duringmanipulation. Other alterations were observed, such as, meibomitis, conjuctival hyperemia, hypopyon, corneal edema andloss of sight. In the right eye, the only alteration found was conjunctival hyperemia. The hemograma revealed discreetanemia; the serum biochemical profile was inside the normal range and there was no evidence of metastasis in the imaging examinations. The animal was submitted to the incisional biopsy of the lesions for histopathological analysis, whichrevealed a proliferation of neoplastic epithelial cells, highly pleomorphic, composed of eosinophilic cytoplasm, whichvaried from scarce to moderate, of indistinct borders, with a large nucleus and loose chromatin and large and evidentnucleolus, compatible with SCC, enabling, also, the classification as multicentric...

Background: Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor (CTVT) is a neoplasm transmitted by implantation of its cells into genitaland extragenital organs, while Heartworm and Visceral Leishmaniasis are zoonosis transmitted by hematophagous insectsthat are often underdiagnosed in asymptomatic animals. Coinfection by the agents of these parasitosis is well documented, however, the association of both diseases with the CTVT is still unusual. Thus, it was aimed to report a case of incidentalidentification of microfilariae of D. immitis and amastigotes forms of Leishmania sp. in cutaneous CTVT by cytology in anasymptomatic dog for the parasitosis.Case: A 6-year-old, male, mongrel, sexually intact dog from the city of Patos, Paraiba, Brazil, was presented with a cutaneouscircumscribed tumoral lesion in a region adjacent to the right olecranon, with an ulcerated surface of reddish color, havingareas of necrosis inside and larvae (myiasis), draining bloody secretion. The material was collected for cytological analysis, which proved to be Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor (CTVT) with the presence of amastigote forms of Leishmania sp.and microfilariae of D. immitis among neoplastic cells. Blood count, serum urea, creatinine and albumin, ALT, AST, FA,CK, Na+, K+, Ca++, CK-MB, Troponin I (cTnI), Snap 4Dx Plus (Idexx®), Snap Leishmania (Idexx®), and Knott’s test wereperformed, plus chest radiography, blood pressure measurements and electrocardiogram (ECG). The alterations found corresponded to normochromic normocytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, hypoalbuminemia, microfilariae in the Knott test, increaseof CK, CK-MB and cTnI, positivity for Erlichia sp., Anaplasma sp., Leishmania sp. and Dirofilaria immitis.

Platynosomum sp. is the major hepatobiliary parasite of felids, causing an extra-hepatic obstructive lesion which may be treated by surgery. A two-year old cross-bred feline, semi-domiciled, was attended with a clinical picture of apathy, jaundice, dehydration and increase in hepatic enzymes. In the abdominal ultrasonography the liver was observed enlarged, hepatic and portal veins with increased diameter, gall bladder filled by anechoic content, with sediment, thickening and hyperechogenicity of the wall and a dilated main bile duct with a thickened wall. The cholecystectomy with a duodenal enterotomy was performed. The inspection of the gall bladders content revealed parasites with a flattened aspect and the microscopic evaluation was compatible with Platynosomum sp. A treatment with niclosamide and oxibendazole was efficient. Cholecystectomy associated to a duodenal enterotomy is efficient in these cases.(AU)

Background: Several treatments for oral papillomatosis in dogs, with satisfactory results, have already been described in the literature. However, there is need for further studies regarding remission time, association and exposure to drugs, side effects, cost-effectiveness and reproducibility of results. Autohemotherapy (AHT) is a therapeutic technique increasingly used in veterinary medicine that has been providing satisfactory clinical results to treat several pathologies. The procedure consists of removing blood by intravenous puncture that is immediately re-administered via intramuscular, subcutaneous, intravenous or intradermal. Although the empirical isolated use via intramuscular reached excellent results in routine medical treatment of dogs and since few studies and protocols have been described for this species, many times the treatment is based on the experience with the bovine papillomatosis. To this end, this report describes a case of canine oral papillomatosis treated with autohemotherapy (AHT), emphasizing the dosage and clinical evolution of the case. Case: A one-year-old mongrel dog rescued from the street eight months earlier was treated. The animal was thin resulting from the small food amount ingested due to feeding difficulty, infested with ticks, had bad breath and few small warts on the lips, which, after five months, grew and multiplied, and were distributed throughout the oral cavity. The animal clinical history led to papillomatosis diagnosis, which was confirmed by cytological and histopathological exams. The AHT treatment consisted of taking 5 mL of whole blood without EDTA and immediately injecting this volume intramuscularly, every four days until the total remission of the clinical symptoms. Every four days, the papilloma fall off, and involution processes were recorded through a detailed macroscopic analysis of the warts […](AU)

The objective of this study was to describe the radiographic alterations of 131 cardiopatic dogs treated at the Small Animals Medical Clinic, Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Campina Grande. From January 2007 to December 2012, all clinical records of dogs attended in the routine were selected, by means of selecting animals that had a history, and clinical signs compatible with heart disease. From these, the radiographic examinations were evaluated, describing the alterations found. Cough, fatigue and apathy were the most frequent clinical complaints. Each animal had more than one radiographic alteration, with pulmonary edema (48,1%), HSV greater than 10.5 (42,5%), tracheal dorsal displacement (34,3%), greater contact with the external bone (34,3%) and rounded silhouette (32,8%) the most frequent findings. An extensive knowledge of the radiographic changes related to the cardiological patient should be recognized, in order to aid in the rapid identification of the patients with heart disease.

The objective of this study was to describe the clinical aspects of the subtypes of Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor (TVTc). The clinical record of 40 dogs with the cytologic diagnosis of TVTc was evaluated. Of these was selected information about classfication, clinical complaint and affected organs with their specific locations. In this study, the plasmocytoid TVTc prevailed. The predominant clinical complaint was penile bleeding (14/40) and vaginal bleeding (13/40). As to the location, genital (G) (34/40) and extragenital (EG) (17/40) tumors were observed, with TVTcL (G-66,66% and EG-66,66%), TVTcM (G-90% and EG-30%) and TVTcP (G-90,47% and EG-38,08%). Among the genitals, the base, body and gland prevailed, and in the vagina: ventral and dorsal floors. In the extragenital tumors, there were changes in the skin, mouth, subcutaneous, nasal region and eye. It was concluded that the TVTcP prevailed more in the skin, while the TVTcL in the head region.

A six year old bitch had ulcerated, friable, easily bleeding masses similar to cauli flower in submucosa in the dorsum-posterior region of the vagina at the junction with the vestibule. The lesion was submitted to cytopathological examination by imprint and vaginal TVT was diagnosed. After twenty days the animal returned to the Medical Clinic with lesions on the skin and in the eyeball, again the lesions were submitted to cytopathological examination by fine needle aspiration (FNA) and scraping of the conjunctiva by Swab, where the definitive diagnosis was TVT, the microscopic characteristic of the three lesions were similar. The treatment was performed with vincristine sulfate; from the second application there was tumor regression and progressive clinical improvement.

The AHT treatment consisted of taking 5 mL of whole blood without EDTA and immediately injecting this volume intramuscularly, every four days until the total remission of the clinical symptoms. Every four days, the papilloma fall off, and involution processes were recorded through a detailed macroscopic analysis of the warts […]

The treatment was performed with vincristine sulfate; from the second application there was tumor regression and progressive clinical improvement.(AU)

It was concluded that the TVTcP prevailed more in the skin, while the TVTcL in the head region.(AU)

An extensive knowledge of the radiographic changes related to the cardiological patient should be recognized, in order to aid in the rapid identification of the patients with heart disease.(AU)

Background: Salivary gland diseases in dogs have an overall incidence of 0.3%. Sialocele and sialoadenitis are the most common injuries and are usually caused by infectious diseases, especially of bacterial origin. Currently, Cryptococcus neoformans has not been registered as the etiological agent since fungal participation is unusual. This case report describes a cryptococcal sialoadenitis in a dog. Case: A 1.9-year-old male poodle had a swelling of the right submandibular region, combined with dry cough and snoring that persisted for about 30 days. The dog often walked in the town square, which has pigeons, and was seen eating chicken droppings. The dog was diagnosed with sialoadenitis in the right submandibular salivary gland. The following laboratory tests were performed cytology, fungal culture, blood count, search for hemoparasites, total plasma protein (ppt), alanine aminotransferase dosage (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), urea (U), creatinine (CREA), Albumin (ALB), total protein (TP), globulin (GLOB) and amylase (AML). In addition, the dog underwent cervical, thoracic and abdominal ultrasound, and cervical x-rays. The cytology results showed fungal sialoadenitis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans. The blood test results evidenced thrombocytopenia and increased ppt, TP, GLOB, and AML. The lungs and heart x-rays results showed no alterations. However, the proximal third [...]

The aim of this report was to describe a case of urinary capilariosis in a feline and an ultrasonographic finding of Capillaria plica in the urinary bladder. A female feline, 14-years-old, was seen presenting a history of weight loss and anorexia for five days. A hemogram, renal and hepatic serum biochemistry, total protein dosages and albumin and urinalysis were performed. The urinalysis showed dark yellow urine, elevated density, turbid aspect, proteinuria, hematuria, cylindruria, presence of leucocytes and bacteria. The microscopic examination of the urinary sediment revealed the presence of oval and colourless eggs with a thick capsule and bioperculated, characterized as being of C. plica. Treatment with levamisole was carried out, however some of the parasites eggs were still verified after the therapy. An abdominal ultrasonography was performed being visualized, in the urinary bladder, a filiform mobile hyperechoic structure of 0.59 cm of length and 0.28 of thickness, besides a thickening of the organs wall. Ivermectine was administered at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg, IM. After this treatment, C. plica eggs were no longer found in the urinary sediment. The ultrasonographic examination of the urinary bladder may be a good tool for the confirmation of the diagnosis in these cases.
