Clinical History: The carcasses of seven 30-month-old female cows slaughtered in a local abattoir for meat production were totally condemned during meat inspection due to disseminated gross abnormalities. Gross findings: On internal examination, several skeletal muscles (pectoralis superficialis and profundus, transversus abdominis, diaphragm, obliquus internus abdominis, and rectus abdominis) and random areas of the peritoneal cavity had multifocal to coalescing nodules (1-3 cm in diameter). The nodules were firmly adhered (fibrous adherences) to the adjacent tissues and surface of portions of the forestomach serosa and splenic capsule. On the cut surface of the nodules, there was a central accumulation of a friable and yellow exudate surrounded by a fibrous capsule. No external lesions were seen in any of the cows.(AU)

We describe a case of hypertrophic gastropathy (Ménétriers like disease) with metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma in a seven-year-old intact female Labrador Retriever dog. The animal suddenly presented with emesis and died. Gross lesions included a marked diffuse thickening of the gastric mucosa and an ulcerated transmural neoplastic mass in the gastric body. Gastric body and fundus were affected by foveolar hyperplasia with loss of chief and parietal cells replaced by mucous cells and marked dilatation of gastric glands. An area of gastric adenocarcinoma with submucosal lymphatic vessels invasion was also present and metastases were observed in the gastric lymph nodes, small intestine, pancreas, lung and liver. Due to its similarity with other gastric proliferative disorders, including this condition in the list of differentials is a necessary step in the diagnostic investigation of canine gastropathies.(AU)

Background: The gray brocket deer (Mazama gouazoubira) is a specie that shows great adaptability in different habitats and it is the most abundant deer specie in South America. The present work describes for the first time a case of abortion followed by death associated with colloid goiter, massive hemonchosis and necrotizing rumenitis in a captive female gray brocket deer. Case: A 4-year-old female gray brocket deer (M. gouazoubira) raised in captivity had a history of abortion during the last third of gestation. The animal was kept in an enclosure together with 3 other gray brockets deers, being 1 male of the same age and 2 juvenile brocket deer of approximately 1 and 2 years old. The animals were fed with concentrated used as cattle feed and dewormed annually with 1% Ivermectin. The animals' enclosure had vegetation cover formed by grasses and soil. The animals appeared healthy with no behavioral changes. The day after the stillbirth, the mother was found dead in the enclosure and sent to the animal pathology sector of the University of Vila Velha (UVV), Brazil. Necropsy revealed that thyroid lobules were highly increased in volume and histopathological findings were compatible with colloid goiter. A large number of nematodes were found in the abomasal content, totalizing 11,626 helminths, which were morphologically characterized as Haemonchus contortus. Grossly, the serous and ruminal mucosa exhibited an extensively reddish focal area with irregular contour, surface ulceration and a firm consistency. Microscopically, a severe necrotizing rumenitis was diagnosed. The liver showed pale multifocal areas on the subcapsular surface, friable to the touch which deepened when cut. Histopathological analysis revealed an accentuated multifocal panlobular coagulative necrosis, characterizing an acute liver necrosis. Discussion: Iodine is a mineral of great importance for thyroid hormones synthesis and your requirements are higher during pregnancy and lactation. Diets deficient in iodine causes a reduction in the basal activity of the hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) and over-stimulation of the thyroid by thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), resulting in goiter. In the present case, it is possible that the shortage of iodine in diet caused a goiter and, as a consequence, triggered the abortion. Haemonchus contortus is a pathogenic nematode of small ruminants, leading to decreased productivity and death in some cases as a result of anemia and hypoxia. The contact between domestic and wild animals, resulting in the emergence of infectious diseases and the spread of pathogens among species. In the present case, manual counting accounted for 11,626 H. contortus larvae, characterizing a massive infection and justifying the condition of severe anemia. The high parasitic load shown in this case points out this parasite's importance related to this species in captivity. In general, inflammatory lesions in the rumen are results of excessive intake of fermentable carbohydrates, which leads to a considerable decrease in ruminal pH and leads to a high proliferation of lactic acid bacteria. This lesion has been previously reported in cervids. This case of comorbidities demonstrates that failures in nutritional and health handling, may cause simultaneous multiple diseases leading to death. Preventive measures for helminth parasite control and a proper feeding management with an adequate diet must be provided in order to preserve the species in captivity.

Gastric dilatation-volvulus is an acute and life-threatening condition characterized by rapid accumulation of air and malposition of the stomach that requires veterinary intervention. Dirofilariasis is a disease caused by the nematode Dirofilaria immitis which can cause chronic and severe injuries in the animals cardiovascular system. In this study, a case of gastric dilatation volvulus syndrome and splenic rupture in a dog with incidental finding of dirofilariasis in its necropsy will be reported.(AU)

The post mortem exam was performed after the confirmation of the animal death, being collected fragments of organs for histopathology. Additionally, it was performed an environmental study of the running over site based on successive and periodic measurements of the surface temperature of different areas. The necropsy and histopathological findings were consistent with the initial suspicion of running over, demonstrating signs of polytrauma. In this way, the running over of wildlife inside the Itaperi campus denounces the scarce awareness of the University users, as well as the need to promote the population survey and implement safety and surveillance measures on campus. The elaboration of a management plan and actions of environmental education by governmental organs with the support of the scientific community are the main measure for the protection of fauna in these urban areas.(AU)

With the increasing longevity of captive animals, chronic or senility-related diseases, as neoplasias, are even more often. The objective is to report the mainly anatomic and pathologic findings in jaguar (Pantera onca) with presumptive diagnostic of mammary carcinoma. The animal was taken to Ceará State University (UECE), were the necropsy proceeds. There was presence of two neoplasm tumor masses of large dimensions, one in the left mammary chain and the other one adhered to the rectus abdominis muscle, besides metastasis in inguinal lymph nodes, lungs, left ovary and adrenal, omentum and around the abdominal aorta, whose findings agree with what the literature says. With there being said, we can conclude that it was a high malignancy neoplasia, whose the large dimensions compromised the vascularization of the affected organs. Therefore, understanding the etiopathogeny of neoplasias is important to improve the prognostics and therapeutic conducts, and increase the quality of life in the affected animals.

The adnexal structures mostly observed are hair follicles and sebaceous glands, with normal or bizarre structures, such as cystic hair follicles surrounded by sebaceous lobes. This study has the purpose of reporting a case of fibroadnexal hamartoma in a 7-year-old bitch taken to the Veterinary Hospital of the State University of Ceará (UECE) due to a nodule in the lateral distal region of the right pelvic limb with slow and progressive growth over one year. The patient was referred to cytology and pre-surgical examinations. After surgical excision, the nodule was sent for histopathological evaluation. Microscopically, the lesion exhibited an intradermal nodular structure composed of abundant fibrous tissue, involving and segmenting incomplete adnexal structures, represented by sebaceous glands and hair follicles, some of these ruptured, leading to intense piogranulomatous inflammatory reaction. Macro- and microscopic findings were determinant for diagnosing this lesion as a fibroanexial hamartoma.(AU)

In veterinary dermatological clinical routine, it is important to have rapid and non-invasive diagnostic resources that help in the therapeutic choice for each case, as for example, the cytological examination. Due to the intrinsic limitations of this exam, whenever possible, it should be associated with a histopathological result for a more accurate diagnostic. This paper reported the case of a Dobermann puppy that had an exophytic, erythematous, nodular lesion on the tail, with a history of surgery at the site, which was diagnosed by cytology as a benign mesenchymal lesion associated with a subacute inflammatory process. After histopathological examination, the clinical suspicion of keloid, which was compatible with cytology, was confirmed. The cytological examination was essential for the adequacy of the surgical management used in the case and had a good correlation results with the histopathological examination, validating the importance of this exam in the routine of clinical consultations.

Foreign bodies are frequently ingested by small animals, representing a common cause ofaccidents and deaths in dogs. Here we described a case of an obscure death, found to becaused by an accidental ingestion of bone, generating severe hemorrhage and systemiccomplications, in which the necropsy, ultimately, had a crucial role to stablish the cause ofdeath, understanding the main processes and providing the necessary tools for its study.
