Needs and challenges of using enrichment materials in the pig industry / Necessidade e desafios do uso de materiais de enriquecimento ambiental na suinocultura industrial

Pigs have certain needs that, when unfulfilled, can affect their behavior and their productive efficiency thus promoting welfare problems. Exploration and the search for food are inherent behaviors in pigs at all stages of production, and nest preparation is an exclusive antepartum need for females. In intensive rearing units, providing environmental enrichment materials is a way to meet these needs that allows the animals to fully express their behavior and avoid problems such as tail biting, stereotypes and, specifically in the case of breeding arrays, the onset of labor due to stress, which can result in impaired births and piglets. Straw is known as an enrichment material that best meets these demands, and it is an important requirement of animal welfare legislation in several countries. This study was developed to highlight the importance of meeting the biological needs of pigs through the provision of environmental enrichment materials and to demonstrate the positive results that these materials have on pig welfare. The challenges to the viability of the regular use of these resources in industrial pig farming are also addressed.(AU)

A exploração e a busca por alimento é um comportamento inerente dos suínos em todas as fases de produção, e a preparação do ninho é uma necessidade exclusiva da fêmea durante o pré-parto. Nas unidades de criação intensiva o fornecimento de materiais de enriquecimento ambiental é uma forma de atender estas necessidades, permitindo que os animais expressem plenamente seu comportamento, evitando problemas como caudofagia, estereotipias e, especificamente no caso das matrizes, o início do parto sob estresse, resultando no comprometimento do parto e dos leitões. The brazilian pig industry can adopt european welfare standards: a critical analysis / A suinocultura brasileira pode adotar padrões europeus de bem-estar: uma análise crítica

Animal welfare is an issue of growing concern worldwide. Since the 1960s, Europe has led the discussions on this subject, developing the supporting science and the necessary standards. Currently, European welfare standards on pig farms set the global standards and may represent a potential marketing barrier for commercial pork production. Brazil is one of the largest producers and exporters of pork and has intensified efforts to adapt to the new standards. The objective of this paper is to assess the feasibility of applying European welfare standards to Brazilian industrial pig farming. The complexity of the required changes and the potential advantages to Brazil are discussed, and it is concluded that Brazil has the resources to meet the majority of the requirements.(AU)

O bem-estar animal é um tema de crescente preocupação mundial. A partir da década de 1960, a Europa centralizou as discussões sobre a questão, provocou o nascimento desta ciência e promoveu o desenvolvimento de normas relacionadas. Atualmente, os padrões europeus de bem-estar na criação de suínos constituem-se referências mundiais, podendo representar futuramente potenciais barreiras mercadológicas para a comercialização da carne suína. O Brasil é um dos maiores produtores e exportadores desta proteína animal, e intensificou suas ações com objetivo de se adequar a este novo cenário. O objetivo deste documento é avaliar a viabilidade da suinocultura industrial brasileira em aplicar os padrões europeus de bem-estar em seu atual sistema produtivo. Os níveis de complexidade estruturais e de manejo e as vantagens potenciais do Brasil neste contexto são discutidas, e um cenário a priori positivo mostra que o país tem várias facilidades para a adequação da maioria das exigências praticadas.(AU)

Ações europeias e brasileiras voltadas para a melhoria do bem-estar dos suínos / European and Brazilian actions focused to improve the pig welfare

A ciência do bem-estar animal nasceu na Europa com a finalidade de atender a demanda da sociedade por mudanças nas condições em que os animais eram mantidos. O princípio das cinco liberdades surgiu dentro deste contexto, sendo a representação teórica e prática que melhor caracteriza estas ideias. Para a garantia de um padrão mínimo de proteção e bem-estar animal a Comunidade Europeia estabeleceu diretivas e regulamentos para os segmentos da produção, transporte e abate, consolidando a sua vanguarda no tema. No Brasil, as ações públicas e privadas neste sentido foram intensificadas, no entanto, o país segue defasado em relação à União Europeia em todos os segmentos da cadeia produtiva. Na atualidade o país ainda não dispõe de normas efetivas para atender os segmentos de produção e transporte de suínos e está em fase de reedição da norma relativa ao abate humanitário. Compreender o status da legislação europeia e como e quanto devemos avançar é uma discussão que demanda ser tratada com determinação, base científica e eficiência.

The animal welfare is a science that born in Europe in order to answer the society's demand for changes related with the conditions where the animals were submitted. The principles of the five freedoms came within this context, being the best theoretical and practical representation of these proposals. Community European established policies and regulations for the production, transport and slaughter's segments to ensure a minimum standard of the animal protection and animal welfare, consolidating its leading in this area. In Brazil, the public and private actions related have been intensified, however, the country is still lagged in relation the European Union, considering all segments of the production chain. Currently the country does not have an effective standard to support the welfare inside the pig production and transport segments and it is reissuing the standard for humanitary slaughter. Then it is important to understand the status of the European laws and how and how much we should advance in relation to this discussion, which demands to be treated with determination, scientific basis and efficiency.

Efeitos do alojamento no bem-estar de suínos em fase de crescimento e terminação / Effects of housing on pig welfare in growing and finishing phase

Um dos princípios fundamentais para fornecer um adequado bem-estar para os suínos criados em condições intensivas é mantê-los sob boas condições de alojamento. Os suínos destinados à indústria permanecem de 80-90% da vida alojados nos setores de creche, crescimento e terminação. Nestas fases os animais são mantidos em grupos com semelhante condição etária e peso corporal, estando o alojamento, um dos quatro princípios de um adequado bem-estar animal, intrinsicamente relacionado com o seu estado de satisfação física e mental. O objetivo desta revisão é discutir aspectos ambientais que influenciam na qualidade de vida dos animais na fase de crescimento, como os efeitos da temperatura, da densidade, e das características e revestimentos do piso.
