The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of two extenders (Tris-egg yolk - TRIS and Botu-Bov® - BB, Botupharma, Brazil) for bovine semen cryopreservation with a different number of sperm per straw (6, 12, 25 or 50 x 106 sperm per straw) on post-thaw seminal viability (experiment 1) and pregnancy per artificial insemination (P/AI; experiment 2). In experiment 1, higher values of linearity and straightness associated to low amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH) were observed in samples cryopreserved with BB extender, when compared to samples cryopreserved with TRIS extender (P < 0.05) regardless of the sperm concentration per straw. The pregnancy rates were 57.63, 60.32, 59.26 and 62.50% respectively for 6, 12, 25 or 50 x 106 sperm/straw in BB samples and 45.61, 48.84, 60.34 and 70.59% respectively for the TRIS extender. Increasing the number of sperm had a significant effect on P/AI (P < 0.05) when TRIS extender was used. In conclusion, Botu-Bov® extender promotes better post-thaw sperm movement. The increase in the number of sperm cells per insemination dose improved P/AI rates in Bos indicus lactating beef cows inseminated when using Tris-egg yolk extender.

The major challenge for a greater dissemination of in vitro produced (IVP) bovine embryos is to improve embryonic survival after cryoprese rvation. The involvement of embryo niclipids on this issue is well documented. However, it has been recognized that not only the amount of lipids that affects embryo cryotolerance, but the embryo survival capacity after cryopreservation is a rather multifactorial event. In this review, some strategies to improve embryonic lipid composition and postcryo preservation survival by modifying the embryos themselves to make them more cryopreservable are overviewed The ue of sedefined and defined serum free cul ture media, the addition of some chemicals in the culture media to modify embryo lipid composition, and the modulation of embryo cell membrane fluidity by cholesterol or unsaturated fatty acids added to the culture media and oocyte/embryo donor nutritional management with a diet enriched in polyunsaturated fatty acids, were described as alternatives for the improvement of IVP embryo survival after cryopreservation.

The most used surgical technic for treatment of rectal prolapse is the rectal promontofixation by laparotomy. In the last years, the perineal rectossigmoidectomy has been widely performed again, as alternative for old pacients, particulary for these who have other severe diseases. We've studied 14 pacients operated on perineal rectosigmoidectomy (Altemeier procedure ), 13 women and only 01 man. There were 50% constipated ,also 14,2% had chronic diarrhoea and 64,2% were incontinent. The medium age was of 72,2 years, 64,2% had manual anastomosis and 35,8% mechanic and 42,9% had posterior anal repair (Parks) at the same surgical time. The pacients were hospitalized for 3,8 days (mean time), there were no imediate or recent complications and just 01 recurrence (7,1%). As wehad good results, low morbimortality and acceptable recurrence, we have performed that technique more usually, specially for old patients.
