Osteosarcoma is a malignant primary tumor of the bone, which is considered rare in birds. This report describes an osteoblastic osteosarcoma in a scarlet macaw (Ara macao), which was apathetic with progressive weight loss, and had a tumor in the distal portion of the femur and proximal tibiotarsus with ulcerated pododermatitis in the contralateral limb. Euthanasia was elected due to poor diagnosis after radiographic and cytological examination. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry were performed and confirmed the diagnosis of an osteoblastic osteosarcoma with hepatic and pulmonary metastases.(AU)

A two-year-old, male, non-castrated cat was referred to the veterinary hospital with a three-month history of paresis of the pelvic limbs. Clinical examination revealed a discreet muffling of cardiac sounds and the presence of a degree III/VI holosystolic murmur. The animal was hospitalized and died of cardiorespiratory arrest. The heart had a thickened left ventricular endocardium characterized by the deposition of a fibrous white matter that was firmly adhered to the endocardium and also observed on the epicardium. Renal infarctions and thrombi in the atrium and bifurcation of the aorta were found. Microscopically, in the endocardium of the left ventricular chamber there was a diffuse and disorganized deposition of fibrous connective tissue filled with elastic fibers of varying thickness. In the left ventricular epicardium, the same lesion was observed, but with less extension. Clinical and anatomopathological findings were consistent with primary left ventricular endocardial and left ventricular epicardial fibroelastosis with secondary left ventricular congestive heart failure, thromboembolism and paresis.

Reported cases of neoplasia affecting hippopotamus are very scarce. This report describes a metastatic oral squamous cell carcinoma in a captive 44-year-old male common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) that developed progressive loss of appetite, fibrinohemorrhagic oral discharge, and progressive weight loss. Gross, cytological, and histopathological findings were compatible with a conclusive diagnosis of an invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma with metastasis in the lung, adrenal, and spleen. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of squamous cell carcinoma in a common hippopotamus.

Primary renal neoplasms are infrequent in domestic animals and birds, being budgerigars an exception. This report describes a papillary renal adenoma in a toco toucan (Ramphastos toco), which was euthanized due to poor prognosis after surgical intervention of phalanx fractures in both wings. Grossly, the caudal pole of the right kidney had a nodular lesion measuring 3.5 x 1.7 x 1.5 cm. Microscopically, there was a well delimited neoplasm arranged in large and coalescent papillary structures composed by a single layer of epithelial cells. There was mild to moderate nuclear and cytoplasmic pleomorphism, whereas mitotic figures were absent. In conclusion, this tumor was considered as an accidental finding, which is similar to the majority of adenomas reported in domestic mammals.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a common oral neoplasm in domestic cats, but there are only a few reports in wild felids. A captive 10-years-old, female Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica), with history of chronic renal disease and serologically positive for Leishmania sp. developed a lytic mandibular nodule that was histologically diagnosed as SCC. At necropsy was also observed an exocrine pancreatic carcinoma, which was considered an incidental finding, and a chronic lympho-plasmocytic interstitial nephritis associated with a membranous glomerulopathy, compatible with the chronic renal disease presented by the animal. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of an invasive and non-metastatic mandibular SCC in a Siberian tiger.

Prosthenorchis elegans is an acanthocephalan intestinal parasite reported in neotropical primates. Despite parasitism by P. elegans having already been described in wild marmosets in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, there are no reports of this infection in wild Geoffroy's marmoset (Callithrix geofroyi). The aim of this study is to report one case of P. elegans parasitism in a free-ranging C. geoffroyi from Brazilian Atlantic Forest in Espírito Santo state, and characterize the pathological and parasitological findings of this infection. One Geoffroy's marmoset necropsied at the Vila Velha University's Veterinary Pathology Laboratory presented intense chronic transmural ulcerative enteritis associated with twenty cylindrical helminths present in the jejunum and ileum. We can conclude that parasitism by P. elegans occurs in free-ranging groups of Geoffroy's marmosets. Its infection produced severe intestinal lesions even in free-ranging marmoset and therefore is a threat to this animal's survival in wildlife and can have some impact on primate conservation in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.(AU)

Dysgerminoma and granulosa cell tumor are neoplasms of the ovary of domestic animals, originating from germ cells and sex-cords cells, respectively. These neoplasms generally occur unilaterally, and usually as a single neoplasm. This report describes a case of a dysgerminoma in the right ovary and a granulosa cell tumor in the left ovary in a six years old bitch. An Akita and Siberian Husky crossbred bitch was admitted at the Veterinary Hospital (Universidade Vila Velha), with a history of purulent vaginal discharge, irregular estrous cycle, fatigue, polydipsia and polyuria. Ultrasound exam demonstrated bilateral ovarian neoplasms, and the animal was subjected to ovariohysterectomy. Macroscopic and microscopic features found in right and left ovaries were typical of dysgerminoma and granulosa cells tumor Sertoli-like, respectively. The uterus had cystic endometrial hyperplasia associated with mild metritis. Ovarian neoplasms occurring bilaterally are uncommon especially with different cell origins and distinct histopathological patterns in each ovary as described in this report.

Resumo

The aim of the present study was the ultrasound characterization of the abdominal and pelvic regions of five maned wolves kept in captivity at the Triage Center of Wild Animals of the Federal University of Viçosa (Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres, Universidade Federal de Viçosa). This characterization included descriptions of ultrasonographic aspects and measurements of various structures using B-mode ultrasound. Biometric data were collected to assess the existence of significant linear correlations between these measurements and the measurements obtained by ultrasound. Additionally, hematological and serum biochemistry evaluations of the animals were performed. The ultrasound findings were similar to those available in the literature on domestic dogs, which were used for comparison as a result of the lack of published data regarding maned wolves. The latter species showed characteristics closely resembling those of the former, differing in the spleen and left renal cortex echogenicities, in the appearance of the prostatic and testicular regions and in the hepatic portal vein morphology. In the current study, the biometric values were similar to those previously published; however, no data regarding thoracic perimeter, modified crown-rump length or thoracic depth were found in the literature for this Canidae species. Statistical analysis showed the existence of a strong negative correlation between the modified crown-rump length and left renal length, between the modified crown-rump length and the right renal volume, between the thoracic perimeter and the height at the cranial pole of the left adrenal gland and between the thoracic perimeter and the height at the caudal pole of the left adrenal gland. Laboratory findings, including segmented neutrophil, eosinophil, monocyte and lymphocyte counts and the serum levels of glucose, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, urea, total protein, globulin, creatine phosphokinase, triglyceride, sodium, phosphate, potassium and chloride, were inconsistent with values found by other authors. The ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging method that must be further explored in the medicine of wild animals; therefore, additional research in this area is required.(AU)
