Resumo
This study evaluated different crosses for sustainable beef production in the Meio-Norte, Brazil. Thirty-four cattle [seven Curraleiro Pé-duro (CPD), six Nellore (NEL), seven ½ ½ , seven » » ½ , and seven » » ½ ] were evaluated on natural pastures in the states of Piauí and Maranhão. The animals were weighed at birth (BW); weaning (WW); 12 (W12), 18 (W18), and 24 months (W24); and slaughter (SW). The morphometric measurements of rump height (RH), withers height (WH), body length (BW), and heart girth (HG) were assessed. Hot carcass weight (HCW), cold carcass weight (CCW), loin-eye area (LEA), backfat thickness (BFT), carcass dressing percentage (DP), water-holding capacity (WHC), cooking loss (CL), shear force (SF), pH, meat color (L*M, a*M, and b*M), and fat color (L*F, a*F, and b*F) were also analyzed. The three-cross animals (F2A and F2S) showed heavier weights from weaning to slaughter as well as higher HCW and CCW. The three-cross cattle produced less methane per kg of meat. The lack of differences between the NEL, F1, F2A, and F2S animals indicates that crossbreeding did not increase their size, which could be detrimental to reproductive efficiency. Loin-eye area, BFT, and DP differed between the genetic groups, with the highest LEA obtained by F2A. Backfat thickness and DP were low in all animals, suggesting a need for increased carcass fatness. Water-holding capacity, CL, SF, pH, a*F, b*F, L*M, and a*M did not differ; therefore, crossbreeding did not affect qualitative or visual aspects of meat and fat. The use of crosses in meat production systems in the Meio-Norte region of Brazil is a viable option to improve sustainability. In this respect, three-cross animals have the best performance.(AU)

The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of supplementation of maturation medium withcaptopril in oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM). 470 CCOs were recovered and classified into grades I and II,being divided into four groups: G1 (n = 56), that was control group; G2 (n = 152) 20 mM of captopril; G3 (n =126) 40 uM of captopril; and G4 (n = 136) 80 uM of captopril, then these were subsequently submitted to IVMprocess for 24 hours at 38.5°C in 5% CO2. After 24 hours of maturation, oocytes were denuded and evaluatedfor the first polar body extrusion and were, therefore, considered matured. The addition of the Captopril inmedium of oocytes maturation has not improved the IVM rate.(AU)

The reproductive seasonality is a major reproductive characteristics reproductive in buffaloes, oftenrelated to low reproductive rates. This study aimed to establish the occurrence and the concentration period ofbirths in buffaloes heifers and cows and evaluate the calving interval (CI) and the period of service (PS) inprimiparous and pluriparous buffaloes. The study was conducted on a property in São Mateus - MA, at 4° 2' 26"south latitude and 44° 28' 6" W, in the 2012 and 2013 period. Data were collected from 1279 buffalo cows and242 buffalo heifers. The evaluated reproductive parameters was performed descriptive statistics and analysis ofvariance (ANOVA). The comparison of means was performed using the t test, with 5% significance level. Theparturition of heifers and cows were concentrated in the first half and reproductive rates were acceptable.(AU)

This study aims to evaluate the effects of tea of copaíba extract (Copaifera luetzelburgii), in differentconcentrations, added to the Tris-egg yolk extender, the functionality of the plasma membrane sperm ofcryopreserved goats. Were used four goats breeds, adults, male, six of each breed, aged between 1 and 6 years,a pool of ejaculates were formed to analyze. The animals were randomly divided into four experimentaltreatments: TI without adding of tea of copaíba extract (control); TII, added 0,1 mg of tea of copaíba extract;TIII, 0,2 mg; and TIV, 0,5 mg. The samples were frozen and stored, after 30 days were thawed for analysis byhisposmotic test (HOST). Adding tea of copaíba extract showed no significant difference between treatments forHOST, so the use of tea of copaíba extract the seminal dilution was not effective in preserving the functionalityplasma membrane sperm of goats post-thawing.(AU)

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of limonene (R)-(+) (50 µM,100 µM and 150 µM) in supplementing the diluter of bulls freezing semen. Thirty-six ejaculated from fourCurraleiro-Pé-Duro bulls were used for cryopreservation. The epifluorescence microscopy was used todetermine the plasmatic integrity and mitochondrial activity potential. No was observed effect on the integrity ofplasma membrane nor mitochondrial activity potential when cryopreserved by adding limonene R - (+). Theresults obtained in this study allow to conclude that supplementation limonene (R) - (+) on diluter of bullsfreezing semen does not interfere with the integrity of the plasma membrane or the potential of spermmitochondrial activity.(AU)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of supplementation of maturation medium withcaptopril, and its consequences in the bovine maturation, fertilization and embryo development in vitro. 326bovine ovaries from a local slaughterhouse were used. 1101 CCOs were recovered and distributed in fourgroups: G1 (n = 112), that was control group; G2 (n = 322) 20μM of captopril; G3 (n = 367) 40μM ofcaptopril; and G4 (n = 300) captopril 80μM and later submitted to IVM. The matured CCOs were fertilized, andco-incubated. After fertilization, 676 presumptive zygotes were cultured and maintained in the greenhouse for 7days. The total number of viable embryos was 12; 39; 32 and 31, respectively in the experimental groups.Considering the experimental conditions adopted, it was concluded that the addition of the Captopril in mediumof oocytes IVM positively doesnt influence embryonic development, as evidenced by the similar percentages ofembryo production.(AU)
