Resumo

This study evaluated the performance, carcass yield and quality, and physiological stress indicators of broilers of three genetic strains reared at three housing densities for 29 days. A total of 828 day-old male chicks, with average initial weight of 40.0± 2.0g were used. Three genetic strains (Cobb 500, Ross 808, and Ross 508, with 276 birds each) and three housing densities (17, 19, and 21 broilers/m²) were tested. A completely randomized experimental design in a 3 x 3 factorial arrangement, with four replicates of 23 birds each, was applied. The following responses were evaluated: performance parameters (average weekly body weight, average daily gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio), physiological stress indicators (blood glucose levels, blood cell counts), and carcass yield and quality (dermatosis, bruising, dermatitis, and femoral degeneration scores). Average weekly body weight (BW) and daily weight gain (DWG) were not influenced by rearing density (p0.05), but Cobb 500 broilers were the heaviest during the analyzed period. In the second week, Ross 508 birds showed better feed conversion ratio (FCR) when housed at the density of 17 broilers/m² (p0.001), whereas the best FCR of Ross 808 and Cobb 500 broilers was obtained at 21 broilers/m² (p0.001). Carcass yield was not influenced by the treatments (p0.05). Physiological stress indicators were not affected by the treatments, and remained within normal ranges (p0.05). Dermatosis scores (scratches) increased (p0.05) when housing density increased from 17 to 19 broilers /m².

There has been a great evolution and improvement in the nutrition of poultry and lysine has been used the reference amino acid to increase animal protein deposition. Therefore, a meta-analysis was performed with the objective of studying the effect of different dietary lysine levels on the performance and carcass yield of broiler chickens. In total, 21 studies published in Brazil since 1999 were included. Bird performance considered daily weight gain (178 observations) and feed conversion ratio (188 observations) results. Carcass quality was evaluated relative to carcass yield (24 observations), abdominal fat (24 observations) and breast meat yield (30 observations). Data were checked for normality and were submitted to analysis of variance. Weight gain and carcass yield increased with the addition of 1.05% of lysine to the diet, whereas feed conversion ratio and abdominal fat were reduced as dietary lysine concentration increased. The results, therefore, indicate that lysine is essential in bird nutrition and significantly affects bird performance and carcass yield.

Resumo

Avaliou-se a utilização de células-tronco mononucleares (CTM) na cicatrização de defeito ósseo experimental como alternativa aos métodos convencionais, analisando-se o tempo de evolução cicatricial e a presença dessas células no tecido neoformado. Foram utilizados 18 cães, separados em três grupos (G) de seis, e de cada animal foram colhidas células da medula óssea (MO), contadas e analisadas para morfometria, por meio da contagem manual e mielograma. Um defeito ósseo tibial foi então criado cirurgicamente, e a lesão tratada com esponja de gelatina embebida em solução fisiológica (G1), esponja de gelatina embebida com aspirado de MO processado (G2) e esponja de gelatina embebida com aspirado de MO processado e proteína óssea morfogenética (rhBMP-2) (G3). A cicatrização foi então avaliada por estudos radiográficos, e a presença de CTM foi identificada por meio de marcadores nanocristais Qtracker, em microscopia com luz fluorescente, uma semana após a intervenção cirúrgica. Entre as células identificadas pelo marcador, foram encontradas células da linhagem óssea. As avaliações radiográficas demonstram crescimento ósseo acelerado nos animais de G2 e G3. Houve diferenças significativas entre o G1 e G3 em todos os tempos estudados, e entre G1 e G2 nos tempos de 30 e 45 dias. A utilização de CTM adultas suplementadas ou não com rhBMP-2 é alternativa favorável ao crescimento ósseo em defeitos experimentais agudos de tíbia de cães.(AU)


Mononuclear stem cells (MSC) were experimentally implanted in bone defect, as an alternative to the conventional methods, in order to evaluate the healing speed, and the presence of these cells in the new-born tissue. Bone marrow (BM) was collected from 18 dogs, and then counted and morphometrically analyzed by manual count and myelogram. The dogs were separated in three groups (G) of six animals each. A tibial bone defect was surgically made in each dog and the wound was treated with gelatin sponge and physiologic solution (G1), gelatin sponge and processed BM (G2), and gelatin sponge, processed BM, and rhBMP-2 (G3). The healing was evaluated by radiographic study and the presence of MSC was microscopically identified by Qtracker nanocrystal labeler with a fluorescent light one week after the surgery. Cells from the bone lineage were found among the labeled cells. The radiographic evaluations demonstrated a speed up in bone growth in dogs from G2 and G3, and significant differences were found between G1 and G3 dogs, in all studied periods; and between G1 and G2 animals at 30 and 45 days. The rhBMP-2 supplemented or not-supplemented adult MSC are favorable alternatives to the bone growth in the healing process of acute experimental-induced tibial defects in dogs.(AU)
