The false dilemma of natural history vs. modern biology in Neotropical bat research

Todays biology is marked by a conflict of approaches due to changes in the way scientific knowledge is produced. Bat research is no exception, and colleagues from different schools struggle with each other in conferences and journals because some stand for old-fashioned, organism-oriented research, while others wholeheartedly defend modern, theory-oriented approaches. From some grand masters, especially Elisabeth Kalko and Adriano Peracchi, I learned that this is a false dilemma: we do not need to choose between one view and the other, but rather can combine them. In this article, I make the case for this integration, aiming at a productive agreement in the chiropterological world.

The interdisciplinarity in the research for medicinal plants of traditional use / A interdisciplinaridade na pesquisa de plantas medicinais de uso tradicional

Ethnobotany, ethnopharmacology and other discipline s with ethno (ethnos) are interdisciplinary sciences. Despite the seeming acc eptance of the interdisciplinary concept in theory, in practice some academics seem to have trouble analyzing and incorporating data coming from anthropological observation. Ethnomethodological research involves the observation and registration of folk wisdom regarding the propertie s and use of medicinal plants. This body of traditional knowledge is tied to a community worldv iew. If these are separated (the knowledge and the communal weltanschauung), we run the risk of reductionism. Nevertheless, it is not uncommon that these factors are not taken into consideration when developing a new herbal medication or treatment.

A etnobotânica, assim como a etnofarmacologia e ou tras disciplinas que são nomeadas com o prefixo etno do grego ethnos, que significa nação ou povo, estão situadas no ca mpo da interdisciplinaridade. Apesar de diversos autores e vocarem o conceito interdisciplinar da etnociência, na prática verifica-se algumas dificuldades por parte de alguns segmentos acadêmicos para incorporar e tratar dados aparentemente subjetivos, provenientes da observação antropológica. Na pesquisa de plantas medicinais de uso tradicional, através da etnometodologia, informações como usos, manejos e virtudes das plantas estão con textualizadas na cosmovisão da comunidade. Se estes dados forem desvinculados desta realidade, corre-se o risco de uma abordagem reducionista sobre o tema. No entanto, não é raro q ue estas informações sejam desconsideradas quando do desenvolvimento de uma nova droga vegetal ou medicamento fitoterápico.

A new paradigm for the learning process about the complexity of the relations water/soil/plant/atmosphere / Um novo paradigma para a aprendizagem da complexidade das relações água/solo/planta/atmosfera

This article shares the undertaken difficulties and approaches when a new paradigm is used for the teach-learning relations existing inside natural ecosystems. For this, throughout this essay, a theoretical justification is accomplished that aims to evidence the insufficiency of the Cartesian paradigm on understanding the natural ecosystem. New approaches are pointed out for this teach-learning, which are suggested a new vision and approach, much more holistic and systemic about the natural ecosystems, by the way to demonstrate the complexity of the infinities relations between them. Through lectures and discussions of texts, which were written by authors that show the necessity of having a new way to understand the naturals ecosystems and with a visit to an ecosystem in Ilha do Mel, PR, Brazil, the students realized changings of perceptions, and it was evidenced the difference between perceptions about the same ecosystem although each one represented the reality. It was possible to observe that all the students realized the importance and necessity to have a new approach, not only about the naturals ecosystems, but also about our urban world.

Este ensaio compartilha as dificuldades e os caminhos percorridos, dentro de uma disciplina de pós-graduação, quando utilizado um novo paradigma para o ensino-aprendizagem das diversas relações naturais existentes dentro de ecossistemas. Para tanto no decorrer deste ensaio é realizada uma fundamentação teórica que visa evidenciar as carências do paradigma cartesiano na compreensão de ecossistemas naturais, ao final são propostos novos caminhos para este ensino-aprendizagem, os quais sugerem uma visão e abordagem mais holística e sistêmica acerca dos ecossistemas naturais, de forma a demonstrar a complexidade das infinitas relações presentes nos mesmos. Por meio de leituras e discussões de textos escritos por autores que alertam para a necessidade de haver uma nova maneira de se entender os ecossistemas naturais e ainda por meio de uma visita a um ecossistema particular na Ilha do Mel, PR, os discentes realizaram trocas de percepções, aonde foi evidenciada a diferença de percepções de um mesmo ecossistema, e apesar disto todos estavam à sua maneira representando a realidade. Foi possível então, observar que os alunos despertaram para a importância e necessidade de haver uma nova abordagem não só de ecossistemas naturais, mas também do próprio mundo urbano no qual vivemos.
