This work aimed to isolate and characterize plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) from 10 Paspalum genotypes and evaluate the effect of their inoculation on P. regnellii, P. atratum, and P. malacophyllum genotypes. The bacterial population ranged from undetectable to 107 bacterial cells per gram of fresh matter in the Paspalum genotypes. Initially, we isolated 164 bacteria from rhizospheric soil and roots of the Paspalum genotypes using media N-free LG agar plate, semi-solid NFb, and LGI. The isolates were characterized genetically and physiologically. The sequencing of 16S rRNA showed the presence of many genera, and some are new in association with Paspalum. The most common was Bacillus followed by Rhizobium, Paraburkholderia, Enterobacter, Cupriavidus, Pseudomonas, Dyadobacter and Acinetobacter. Thirty-eight per cent of isolates produced siderophores, 25 % produced solubilized phosphate, and only 9 % produced indolic compounds. Three greenhouse experiments were performed in randomized blocks with six replicates using representative bacterial strains isolated from P. regnellii, P. malacophyllum and P. atratum cv. Pojuca. We also included strain Sp245 (Azospirillum baldaniorum), uninoculated control, and nitrogen control (150 kg N ha–1). There was an increase of up to 53 % in shoot dry matter in P. regnellii inoculated with strain Sp245 and the shoots accumulated more N. In contrast, only small effects were observed for the other Paspalum genotypes inoculated with PGPR from the host genotypes. This study shows a high diversity of diazotrophic rhizosphere bacteria and suggests no strain specificity between the bacterial isolates and the Paspalum genotypes.

Studies show that soil organic carbon (SOC) decreases between 3 % and 9 % in degraded grasslands in tropical regions, mainly due to the absence of techniques to enhance carbon contribution to soils. This study assessed SOC stock change factors for grassland management, specific to the semi-arid region of Brazil. These factors may contribute to a better understanding of SOC dynamics and could be used to improve inventories on GHG emissions. In addition, they could be used for updating default factors used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This study considers both soil sampling and a literature review, and comprises 27 paired comparisons, where the dataset was analyzed using a mixed linear model. For the grassland in the Brazilian semi-arid region, the SOC stock is reduced by between 12 % and 27 % due to inadequate management, overgrazing, and edaphoclimatic conditions of the Brazilian semiarid. However, this depends on aspects, such as land use and soil layer, which represents substantially more severe losses than in other regions of the country. We also found that losses occur during the first five years after conversion of native vegetation. The results also indicated a trend for SOC stocks to recover over time, reaching 4 % after 30 years of use as grassland, probably related to the long period without soil tillage and the role of gramineas root system.

The distance of a nest to its nearest neighbor ranged from 24-2,368 m, with a higher number of nests (n = 34; 59.7%) in the distance interval of 24-500 m. There was a greater usage of cavities located in Inceptisols, and the distances of nesting cavity entrances to the ground and to the top of road cuts were 1.6 ± 0.9 m and 0.8 ± 0.62 m, respectively. The breeding season lasted 148 days from mid-August to early January. Clutch size (n = 256) varied from 2 to 3 eggs, and the eggs (n = 155) had a total length of 27.2 ± 1.3 mm, breadth of 20.9 ± 0.8 mm, and mass of 6.2 ± 0.7 g. The incubation phase lasted 17.3 ± 0.8 days and the nestling phase for 18.3 ± 1.5 days. The body mass of the chicks was 6.0 ± 1.0 g just after hatching and reached a maximum of 59.6 ± 2.4 g at 16 days of age. Our results can contribute to filling the gaps in knowledge of C. pabsti ecology, because its habitat is under high anthropic pressures and the information on its life history is yet limited.

Body size influences the effect of individuals and assemblages on ecosystem functioning and defines how they respond to ecosystem changes. We evaluated how body size structure of fish assemblages and functional groups respond to human modifications at catchment, riparian and local scales in 40 streams of the Pampa grasslands, southern Brazil. To describe body size structure, we calculated the mean, coefficient of variation, skewness, and kurtosis, using individual biomass data for the entire fish assemblages and separately by functional group. The results suggested that body size response depends on body size metrics, functional group, and the spatial scale of land use. From 11 functional groups, only five showed a clear response to land use. In general, most functional groups had a higher concentration of small sizes (left-skewed) in response to increased land use measured at distinct spatial scales (local, riparian, and catchment), and a greater concentration of sizes in a narrow and central distribution (higher kurtosis). However, the responses were complex and varied between the functional groups. We conclude that considering ecomorphological and trophic features separately by functional group and assessing multiple body size metrics contributed greatly to detecting the influence of land use on fish body size.(AU)


O tamanho corporal influencia o efeito de indivíduos e assembleias no funcionamento dos ecossistemas e define como estes respondem à alterações ambientais. Investigamos como a estrutura do tamanho corporal de assembleias e grupos funcionais de peixes responde ao uso da terra quantificado em três escalas espaciais (sub-bacia, ripária e local), em 40 riachos do Pampa, sul do Brasil. Para tanto, calculamos média, coeficiente de variação, assimetria e kurtose usando biomassa individual em nível de assembleia e grupo funcional. As respostas do tamanho corporal dependeram da métrica utilizada, do grupo funcional e da escala de uso da terra. Entre os 11 grupos funcionais identificados, apenas cinco mostraram uma resposta clara ao uso da terra. Em geral, a maioria dos grupos mostrou uma assimetria na distribuição em favor de menores tamanhos corporais e uma concentração de tamanhos em uma distribuição estreita e central (alta kurtose) em resposta ao uso da terra quantificado nas três escalas espaciais. Entretanto, as respostas foram complexas e variaram entre grupos funcionais. A consideração de atributos ecomorfológicos e tróficos separadamente por grupo funcional e a avaliação de múltiplas métricas contribuem de forma importante para detectar a influência do uso da terra no tamanho corporal de peixes.(AU)

The Sedge Wren Cistothorus platensis (Latham, 1790) is a widely distributed bird species, occurring in natural grasslands through the American continent. Most knowledge on its biology has been obtained in temperate regions, and no information on its home range in tropical grasslands is available. The goal of this study was to examine the home ranges of Sedge Wrens at the Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros, central Cerrado, Brazil. Fourteen banded males were studied in a patch of shrubby grassland (campo sujo) between February and December 2008. The mean size of home ranges of five males monitored during the whole period was 6.10 ± 2.09 ha (Minimum Convex Polygon) and 4.57 ± 1.92 ha (Kernel 95%). Home ranges were larger in the dry season (non-breeding period) than in the rainy season (that encompassed both the breeding and non-breeding periods). The overlap between home ranges of neighboring males was small. Sedge Wrens did not establish home ranges on recently burned grasslands. Five banded males were recorded during the entire study period, suggesting the existence of resident individuals. Nine of the 14 males did not persist in the same site throughout the year. There was no evidence of polygyny, as only lone birds or pairs were detected. Our study indicates that Sedge Wrens inhabiting grasslands of the Cerrado are monogamous and have larger home ranges than in temperate regions.(AU)

Informações sobre sua biologia têm sido obtidas principalmente em regiões temperadas, e o conhecimento sobre suas áreas de vida em campos tropicais é inexistente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar as áreas de vida de C. platensis no Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros, Cerrado do Brasil central. Quatorze machos foram anilhados em um campo sujo e cinco deles puderam ser acompanhados continuamente entre fevereiro e dezembro de 2008. O tamanho médio das áreas de vida (n = 5) foi de 6,10 ± 2,09 ha (Mínimo Polígono Convexo) e 4,57 ± 1,92 ha (Kernel 95%) e variaram significativamente entre as estações estudadas. As áreas de vida foram maiores na estação seca (período não-reprodutivo) do que na estação chuvosa (que abrangeu os períodos reprodutivo e não-reprodutivo). Houve baixa sobreposição entre áreas de machos vizinhos. As aves estudadas não estabeleceram áreas de vida em trechos de campo recentemente queimados. Alguns indivíduos foram registrados durante todo o período do estudo, sendo assim considerados residentes. Entretanto, nove dos 14 machos não persistiram no local. Não houve evidência de poliginia, uma vez que somente casais ou aves solitárias foram registradas. Este estudo indica que C. platensis habitando campos naturais no Cerrado são monogâmicos e têm áreas de vida maiores do que em regiões temperadas.(AU)

ABSTRACT The Sedge Wren Cistothorus platensis (Latham, 1790) is a widely distributed bird species, occurring in natural grasslands through the American continent. Most knowledge on its biology has been obtained in temperate regions, and no information on its home range in tropical grasslands is available. The goal of this study was to examine the home ranges of Sedge Wrens at the Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros, central Cerrado, Brazil. Fourteen banded males were studied in a patch of shrubby grassland (campo sujo) between February and December 2008. The mean size of home ranges of five males monitored during the whole period was 6.10 ± 2.09 ha (Minimum Convex Polygon) and 4.57 ± 1.92 ha (Kernel 95%). Home ranges were larger in the dry season (non-breeding period) than in the rainy season (that encompassed both the breeding and non-breeding periods). The overlap between home ranges of neighboring males was small. Sedge Wrens did not establish home ranges on recently burned grasslands. Five banded males were recorded during the entire study period, suggesting the existence of resident individuals. Nine of the 14 males did not persist in the same site throughout the year. There was no evidence of polygyny, as only lone birds or pairs were detected. Our study indicates that Sedge Wrens inhabiting grasslands of the Cerrado are monogamous and have larger home ranges than in temperate regions.


RESUMO A corruíra-do-campo Cistothorus platensis (Latham, 1790) apresenta ampla distribuição geográfica, ocorrendo ao longo de todo o continente americano. Informações sobre sua biologia têm sido obtidas principalmente em regiões temperadas, e o conhecimento sobre suas áreas de vida em campos tropicais é inexistente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar as áreas de vida de C. platensis no Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros, Cerrado do Brasil central. Quatorze machos foram anilhados em um campo sujo e cinco deles puderam ser acompanhados continuamente entre fevereiro e dezembro de 2008. O tamanho médio das áreas de vida (n = 5) foi de 6,10 ± 2,09 ha (Mínimo Polígono Convexo) e 4,57 ± 1,92 ha (Kernel 95%) e variaram significativamente entre as estações estudadas. As áreas de vida foram maiores na estação seca (período não-reprodutivo) do que na estação chuvosa (que abrangeu os períodos reprodutivo e não-reprodutivo). Houve baixa sobreposição entre áreas de machos vizinhos. As aves estudadas não estabeleceram áreas de vida em trechos de campo recentemente queimados. Alguns indivíduos foram registrados durante todo o período do estudo, sendo assim considerados residentes. Entretanto, nove dos 14 machos não persistiram no local. Não houve evidência de poliginia, uma vez que somente casais ou aves solitárias foram registradas. Este estudo indica que C. platensis habitando campos naturais no Cerrado são monogâmicos e têm áreas de vida maiores do que em regiões temperadas.

The patterns of circadian activity observed for medium and large mammals in this Pampa region (southern grasslands) may reflect not only evolutionary, biological and ecological affects, but also human impacts not assessed in this study. We identified ten individuals of C. paca through skin spot patterns during the study period, which were recorded in different transects and months. The minimum population density of C. paca was 3.5 individuals per km2 (resident animals only) and the total density estimates varied from 7.1 to 11.8 individuals per km2, when considering all individuals recorded or the result of the capture/recapture analysis, respectively.

A new species of Ituglanis associated to the grasslands of the Pampa biome is described from the rio Uruguai basin, southern Brazil. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by the low number of ribs and by a unique color pattern composed of an outer layer with scattered round black blotches equivalent in size to the eye circumference over a reddish brown background on the lateral surface of the body. We provide the genetic sequences of the mitochondrial gene Cytochrome c Oxydase subunit I (COI) for three of the paratypes and discuss aspects about the recent discovery of the new species.(AU)

Resumo

Considering that the economic valuation of ecosystem services is a useful approach to support the conservation of natural areas, we aimed to estimate the monetary value of the benefits provided by a protected area in southeast Brazil, the Serra do Cipó National Park. We calculated the visitors willingness to pay to conserve the ecosystems of the protected area using the contingent valuation method. Located in a region under intense anthropogenic pressure, the Serra do Cipó National Park is mostly composed of rupestrian grassland ecosystems, in addition to other Cerrado physiognomies. We conducted a survey consisting of 514 interviews with visitors of the region and found that the mean willingness to pay was R$ 7.16 year1, which corresponds to a total of approximately R$ 716,000.00 year1. We detected that per capita income, the household size, the level of interest in environmental issues and the place of origin influenced the likelihood that individuals are willing to contribute to the conservation of the park, as well as the value of the stated willingness to pay. This study conveys the importance of conserving rupestrian grassland and other Cerrado physiognomies to decision makers and society.(AU)


Dado que a valoração econômica de serviços ecossistêmicos é uma abordagem útil para incentivar a conservação de áreas naturais, tivemos como objetivo estimar o valor monetário dos benefícios fornecidos por uma área protegida no sudeste do Brasil, o Parque Nacional da Serra do Cipó. Calculamos a disposição a pagar dos visitantes pela conservação dos ecossistemas abrangidos pela área protegida, usando o método da valoração contingente. Localizado em uma região que sofre intensa pressão antrópica, o Parque Nacional da Serra do Cipó é composto majoritariamente por campos rupestres, além de outras fitofisionomias do Cerrado. Realizamos 514 entrevistas com os visitantes da região e encontramos uma disposição a pagar média de R$ 7,16 ano1, o que corresponde ao total de aproximadamente R$ 716.000,00 ano1. Detectamos que renda per capita, número de dependentes, nível de interesse por temas relacionados ao meio ambiente e local de origem influenciam a probabilidade de o indivíduo estar disposto a contribuir para a conservação do parque, assim como o valor da disposição a pagar declarada. Este estudo atrai atenção dos tomadores de decisão e da sociedade para a importância de se conservar os campos rupestres e outras fitofisionomias do Cerrado.(AU)

Resumo

Abstract The wildlife of the Brazilian Pampa is threatened by large-scale habitat loss, due in particular to the expansion of soybean cultivation and the conversion of grasslands areas into extensive areas of silviculture. It is essential to study how the mammal fauna copes with the highly fragmented, human-influenced, non-protected landscape. Our study presents the results of a survey of the large- and medium-sized mammals of a typical human-influenced steppic savanna area of the Pampa biome. The survey was conducted exclusively with the use of camera traps over a period of 16 months. The relative frequencies of species in the area were evaluated. We recorded 18 species, some of them locally threatened (Tamandua tetradactyla, Alouatta caraya, Leopardus colocolo, Leopardus geoffroyi, Leopardus wiedii, Puma yagouaroundi, Mazama gouazoubira and Cuniculus paca). Several species were found to thrive in the area; however, many species were considered rare, and undoubtedly new species could be recorded if we continued the sampling. Our results contribute to the knowledge of faunal diversity in the Pampa biome and associated habitats, warn about threats and provide support for conservation measures.(AU)


Resumo A fauna do Pampa brasileiro está sendo ameaçada pela grande perda de habitat que vem sofrendo, em especial, devido à expansão do cultivo da soja e da conversão de áreas de pastagens em extensas áreas de silvicultura. É essencial estudar como a fauna de mamíferos lida com a paisagem altamente fragmenta e não protegida, pela influencia humana. Nosso estudo apresenta os resultados de um levantamento dos mamíferos de médio e grande porte em uma área típica do bioma Pampa com influência humana. O levantamento foi realizado exclusivamente com o uso de armadilhas fotográficas ao longo de um período de 16 meses. Foram avaliadas as frequências relativas das espécies na área. Foram registradas 18 espécies, algumas delas ameaçadas localmente (Tamandua tetradactyla, Alouatta caraya, Leopardus colocolo, Leopardus geoffroyi, Leopardus wiedii, Puma yagouaroundi, Mazama gouazoubira e Cuniculus paca). Várias espécies foram encontradas de forma abundante, no entanto, muitas espécies foram consideradas raras, sendo que novas espécies poderiam ser registradas se continuássemos a amostragem. Nossos resultados contribuem para o conhecimento da diversidade de mamíferos do bioma Pampa e habitats associados, alertam sobre ameaças e fornecem suporte para medidas de conservação.(AU)
