Pooled data analysis is an analytical method that combines results from multiple studies. This technique provides a more robust estimate of the effects of an investigation. We performed a database analysis from seventeen experiments developed at Federal University of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, between 1999 and 2017 to characterize individual performance per area and stocking rate with or without supplementation of replacement heifers grazing winter pastures. Data were separated into two groups: with and without energy supplement provision, and into five subgroups based on supplement levels. Heifers from both groups were maintained under similar forage biomass and leaf blade allowance. Statistical analyses were run on R software using a 'meta' package. Supplement supply increased average daily gain and gain of body condition scores by 11.1% and 20.0%, respectively. Supplement levels higher than 1.2% of body weight resulted in higher weight gain per area, with the stocking rate increasing with higher supplement levels.

Comparisons between the nutritional quality of organic and conventional fresh foods are frequently reported in the literature; however, discussion about processed foods is less frequent. Therefore, this study compared the nutritional content of processed products from both production systems using a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis, regarding aspects of raw material management and processing. The study reviewed scientific articles published between 2010 and 2020 and the data obtained were analyzed using the standardized mean difference method with Hedges' adjustment and a random analytical model. Thirty-seven articles were selected, and the foods analyzed in the studies were grouped into five categories: meat products, dairy products, caught fish, wines, and fruit juices/pulps. In products of animal origin, the comparative focus shown was mainly that of the fatty acid profile, while in those of vegetable origin it was that of phytochemicals. Related to the comparison of nutrient contents, it was possible to verify the similarities in organic and conventional products in most studies; however, specific differences were verified (P < 0.05): organics contained more proteins (meat), omega 3 (dairy), and less linoleic acid (dairy and caught fish). Also, there were differences in the management of organic and conventional raw materials, and similarities in processing. Therefore, the choice for organic processed foods should not be made exclusively based on nutritional aspects, considering that the differences in nutrient contents in relation to those of conventional products are practically nonexistent.

Abstract Porcine somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) plays an important role in many areas of research. However, the low efficiency of SCNT in porcine embryos limits its applications. Porcine embryos contain high concentrations of lipid, which makes them vulnerable to oxidative stress. Some studies have used melatonin to reduce reactive oxygen species damage. At present there are many reports concerning the effect of exogenous melatonin on porcine SCNT. Some studies suggest that the addition of melatonin can increase the number of blastocyst cells, while others indicate that melatonin can reduce the number of blastocyst cells. Therefore, a meta-analysis was carried out to resolve the contradiction. In this study, a total of 63 articles from the past 30 years were analyzed, and six papers were finally selected. Through the analysis, it was found that the blastocyst rate was increased by adding exogenous melatonin. Melatonin had no effect on cleavage rate or the number of blastocyst cells, but did decrease the number of apoptotic cells. This result is crucial for future research on embryo implantation.

This study was developed using meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of ß-mannanase on both poultry and pig performance. Two databases were constructed using information from previous studies that evaluated the ß-mannanase supplementation in diets for broilers (30 papers; 19,643 birds) and pigs (20 papers; 5,319 animals). The meta-analysis followed three sequential analyses: graphical, correlation, and variance-covariance. The effect of ß-mannanase supplementation on performance considerably varied in both databases. Data analysis considering the study effect showed that ß-mannanase supplementation did not influence feed intake. Diets supplemented with ß-mannanase did not influence weight gain, but improved feed conversion (−1%) of broilers compared with the control group. Feeding pigs diets supplemented with ß-mannanase improved weight gain (+5%) and feed conversion (−6%) compared with pigs fed non-supplemented diets. ß-mannanase supplementation increased the digestibility coefficient of dry matter, crude protein, and energy in both species. The inclusion of ß-mannanase also improved the metabolizable energy content in broiler diets and enhanced the digestibility of energy in pig feeds. Current results indicate that ß-mannanase can be considered as an important tool for nutritionists who search for improved feed conversions and nutrient digestibility coefficients.(AU)

Brucellosis is a relevant zoonotic disease for which the most important tool for control is vaccination of susceptible animals. Assessment of vaccine efficacy in natural hosts is based on prevention of abortion and Brucella infection in organs of immunized animals. A meta-analysis of experimental vaccination of Brucella spp. natural hosts was performed, including 45 PubMed and/or Scopus-indexed publications, representing 116 individual experiments. Difference of risk was calculated as an indicator of protection, and a temporal analysis (1980-2016) demonstrated that experimental vaccines tested on natural hosts provided levels of protection that were stable over the past decades. The meta-regression model developed in this study included different vaccine categories (attenuated, inactivated, mutant, subunit, and vectored) considering the difference of risk as the dependent variable. The subcutaneous route of vaccination provided better protection when compared to the intramuscular and oral routes of vaccination. Surprisingly, inactivated vaccines provided better protection than live naturally attenuated vaccine strains (spontaneous mutations) that were considered the reference, whereas subunit vaccines provided lower levels of protection. This is the first meta-analysis of Brucella vaccinology in the natural hosts. These results are useful for the development of new vaccination protocols for controlling animal brucellosis.(AU)

In recent years feline leishmanial infections (FLI) have been studied more than ever before in various parts of the world. However, evidence-based knowledge on FLI has remained unavailable. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the status of felines infected by Leishmania spp. worldwide. Data were extracted from 10 available databases over the period of 1982 to 2017. Overall, 78 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were used for data extraction in this systematic review. The overall FLI prevalence by both serological and molecular methods was estimated at 10% (95% CI: 8%-14%). In Italy, both the seroprevalence (24 %) and PCR prevalence (21 %) were found to be higher than in other countries. The most common diagnostic test used was the indirect fluorescent antibody test (38.5%). Studies on mixed-breed felines were more common than those on other breeds, while the most common parasite species was L. infantum (63%). Our findings suggest that cats act as primary and/or secondary reservoir hosts in the transmission of the Leishmania spp. to humans and also to dogs, by sandflies, at least in endemic foci. Moreover, available data confirm the enzootic stability situation of FLI in several countries including some in Europe.(AU)

Feed formulation using linear programming consists of determining the mixture of feedstuffs required to meet pre-established animal nutritional requirements at the lowest cost. On the other hand, with the use of non-linear programming, it is possible to define nutritional requirements at the time of formulation, aiming at maximum profit. The objective of the present study was to compare feeds formulated using linear and non-linear programming in terms of live performance and internal and external egg quality of commercial laying hens. A total of 288 Hisex® White laying hens, 1.540 ± 0.128 g body weight, were evaluated from 33 to 45 weeks of age. Hens were distributed in a completely randomized block design, including six treatments with six replicates of eight birds each. Three treatments consisted of feeds formulated using linear programming and based on the nutritional requirements of Rostagno et al. (2011), of the genetic strain manual, or mathematical models to maximize performance. The other three treatments consisted of feeds formulated using non-linear programming considering typical, favorable, or unfavorable market scenarios. Data were submitted to analysis of variance, and in case of significance (p 0.05), means were grouped using the Scott-Knott test (5%).The treatments did not influence (p>0.05) Haugh unit, albumen height, or external egg quality parameters. Treatment effects (p 0.05) on yolk weight, albumen weight, yolk color, yolk percentage, albumen percentage, and performance parameters were described. In general, feeds formulated using linear programming and based on nutritional requirements obtained by mathematical models and the genetic strain manual promoted better performance results because the feeds were nutritionally denser. However, the treatments that maximized live performance did not result in higher profitability, which was obtained with the diet formulated for a favorable market scenario using non-linear programming.(AU)

Leishmaniases are a group of diseases of zoonotic importance caused by over 20 species of protozoa of the genus Leishmania, in which domestic dogs are considered to be the main reservoir for the disease. However, the involvement of other vertebrates as reservoirs for these parasites has also been investigated. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to carry out a systematic review with meta-analysis on occurrences of leishmaniasis in equids. The case reports described animals with cutaneous symptoms of leishmaniasis (papules, nodules, ulcers or crusts) that regressed spontaneously, located mainly on the head and limbs, from which three species of protozoa were identified in the lesions: Leishmania braziliensis, Leishmania infantum and Leishmania siamensis. In turn, the meta-analysis showed a combined prevalence of 25%, although with high heterogeneity among the studies, which was attributed to the use of different methods for diagnosing the disease. Leishmaniasis in equids is a benign disease but it should be included in the differential diagnosis of cutaneous diseases among these species. Seroepidemiological studies are important in investigating and monitoring suspected exposure of these hosts to the parasite, especially in endemic areas. However, there is also a need to standardize diagnostic methods.(AU)

This study aimed to assess the probability of meat tenderness in confined cows. For this purpose, CAPES and SciELO platforms were searched for papers under this subject published in Brazil between 2000 and 2015. A total of 43 articles were found, of which eleven were used. Those selected approached the finishing of confined cows and specified animal genetic group, breed, and age at experiment start. Moreover, all these studies evaluated sensory and organoleptic characteristics of meat, following the same method. Each variable was analyzed by logistic regression, using the LOGISTIC procedure of SAS. The factors were evaluated by odds ratio (OR), in which changes in the probability of meat tenderness were estimated by means of an add-on function in regression variable units. Animal age at the beginning of termination, percentages of zebuine blood and heterozygosity, and marbling score are factors that affect (p < 0.30) the chance of beef tenderness. The probabilities of obtaining a tender meat increase when age at termination beginning and zebuine genotype participation are reduced, as well as when heterozygosity (via crosses) and meat marbling score increases.(AU)

Purpose: To compare the safety, feasibility, and short-term clinical benefits of laparoscopic pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (L-PPPD) to open pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (O-PPPD) through retrospective matched cases. Methods: Web of Science, Cochrane, PubMed, CNKI were searched systematically identify studies published between January and December 2017 comparing L-PPPD to O-PPPD. The meta-analysis was performed by using Review Manager 5.3.Results: Two studies matched the selection criteria, including 108 (50%) cases of laparoscopic pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy and 108(50%) cases of open pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy. None of the included studies were randomized, which were both retrospective matched cases. There was no difference in the incidence of postoperative pancreatic fistula, blood loss, diet start and lymph nodes. However, L-PPPD has a shorter hospital stay (p=0.0003) and O-PPPD has a shorter operative time (p=0.02) and tend to decrease the delayed gastric emptying. Conclusions: The perioperative safety of laparoscopic surgery, which also has advantages of minimal invasion and shorter hospital stay, is comparable to that of open surgery. Laparoscopic surgery could be operated if the patients matched the indication and operation difficulty is not so great. However, blind pursuits of L-PPPD should be restrained because there is no essential difference between these two in terms of feasibility, safety and short-term complication.(AU)

The study aimed to employ a meta-analytic study to summarize and analyze data on nitrogen fertilization in grasslands formed by grasses of the genera Brachiaria, Cynodon and Panicum. A sample of 36 research projects carried out in Brazil in the last ten years, including scientific papers, theses and dissertations were selected. From the data contained in these works, relative dry matter and crude protein increment compared to the control treatment (absence of nitrogen fertilization) and the efficiency of nitrogen use in the production of dry matter and crude protein were calculated. Data were subjected to analysis of variance for linear and quadratic effect on each variable within each genus and, in case of significance, regression analysis was performed. The production of dry matter and crude protein of tropical forages responds greatly to nitrogen fertilization, especially the second, but the increase in nitrogen rates reduces the efficiency of fertilization. There was a frequent omission of relevant information in scientific works on nitrogen fertilization in grasslands.(AU)

The objective of this research was to examine the effect of subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) on carcass characteristics and meat quality in 24-month-old British and crossbred British steers finished in feedlot systems. It was assessed using meta-analysis performed on data that was extracted from 46 published studies and comprising a total of 2,695 experimental units. We found that SFT was influenced by and increased linearly with hot carcass weights (HCWs) and cold carcass weights (CCWs) and their yields; moreover, the bone fraction decreased whereas the muscle and fat fractions increased with higher levels of SFT. No significant differences were detected in meat quality variables. Thus, SFT appeared to have a direct influence on HCW, CCW, and the weight and yield of bone, muscle, and fat of castrated steers. A uniform fat thickness level of 6.0 mm SFT was determined to be the standard of quality of carcasses and meat products for consumers.(AU)

Residual feed intake is a method used to measure the efficiency of food use by animals, regardless of the level of production, which allows the identification of animals that consume less food without affecting productive performance. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the ingestive behavior, the estimated methane production, the performance and postslaughter characteristics of steers with low, medium or high residual feed intake (RFI). They used data from studies in Laboratório de Bovinocultura de Corte of Federal University of Santa Maria, from 2006 to 2015, which comprised 157 steers information castrated feedlot and slaughtered at 24 months of age, made in a meta-analytical approach. The animals belonged to the experimental herd of the property, originating from the alternating rotational cross between the Charolais and Nellore breeds and were divided into three treatments: Low - animals with RFI values less than half (-0.5) standard deviation lower than the general average (n = 54); Medium - animals whose RFI values were located between the limits of low and high RFI animals (n = 55); High - animals that presented values of residual food consumption half (+0.5) standard deviation above the general average (n = 48). High treatment steers had a higher initial weight (302.29 kg) and Medium treatment steers had a lower average (279.31 kg), while the Low treatment did not differ (287.84 kg). The dry matter intake absolute and relative and feed conversion ratio were higher in the Alto treatment (10.95 kg / day, 2.99 kg / 100 kg of body weight and 7.84 kg DM / kg of gain, respectively), followed by Medium (9.43 kg / day, 2.66 kg / 100 kg of body weight and 6.55 kg DM / kg of gain) and Low (8.44 kg / day, 2.30 kg / 100 kg of weight) and 6.23 kg DM / kg gain). The estimated daily production of enteric methane was higher in the High treatment (248.01 L / day), lower in the Low treatment (197.03 L/ day) and the Medium treatment showed an intermediate behavior (218.46 L/ day). Steers with low RFI remained approximately 115 days in feedlot against 100 and 96 days for Medium and High. Low RFI steers showed longer carcass length (125.68 cm) compared to Medium RFI steers (123.40 cm). The relative weight of the forehead was higher in the Low RFI steers (37.22 kg / 100 kg cold carcass) compared to the High steers (36.65 kg / 100 kg cold carcass). In the relative rear weight, the reverse occurred (52.76 kg / 100 kg of cold carcass in Alto treatment and 52.05 kg / 100 kg of cold carcass in Low). Animals with Low and Medium RFI showed greater relative weight of heart, total internal fat, cardiac, renal and abomasal fat. Medium RFI animals obtained a higher relative weight of intestinal fat. While animals with Medium and High RFI had higher liver weight. High RFI animals had higher relative weights of lungs, abomasum and intestines. Marbling was higher in the High RFI treatment (6.77 points), followed by the Medium one (5.73 points) and lower in the Low one (4.90 points). Steers with negative residual feed intake demonstrate better-feed efficiency, without impairing their productive performance, but have a higher content of internal fat and less marbling in the meat.
