Canine transmissible venereal tumors (TVT) have a high incidence in Brazil. This is partly due to the large population of stray dogs and the ineffectiveness of epidemiological control programs. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological data, clinical manifestations, and treatments used in dogs affected by TVT. Data were retrospectively collected from the 2015-2020 records of the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. A total of 252 dogs were diagnosed with TVT during the study period. Of these, 81.3% were mixed-breed, 50.4% were males, and 88.9% were young or adult animals. The genital region only was affected in 77.3% of cases. Exclusively extragenital lesions were observed in 22.6% of cases. Among the animals seen, 40.1% received no treatment. Of those treated, 99.3% underwent a vincristine sulfate protocol, and in 77.2%, the treatment resulted in total remission of the neoplasm after 4 to 6 chemotherapy sessions. It was concluded that TVT is a neoplasm most often seen in mixed-breed dogs and located in the genital region, with hemorrhagic secretion being the main clinical sign reported by owners. Vincristine sulfate is currently the most used therapy, with high efficacy. However, despite the good prognosis, there was a high rate of non-adherence or abandonment of treatment, and this is an important factor to be considered and addressed by veterinarians.
O tumor venéreo transmissível (TVT) apresenta elevada incidência no Brasil, relacionada a elevada população de caninos errantes e a ineficácia dos programas de controle epidemiológicos. O objetivo do estudo foi descrever dados epidemiológicos, manifestação clínica e o tratamento empregado em cães acometidos pelo TVT no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro entre os anos de 2015 e 2020. Foram diagnosticados 252 cães com TVT durante o período do estudo, sendo 81,3% cães sem raça definida, 50,4% machos e 49,6% fêmeas, e com 88,9% animais jovens ou adultos. A região genital foi acometida em 77,3% dos casos. Lesões exclusivamente extragenitais foram observadas em 22,6% dos casos. Quanto ao tratamento, 40,1% dos cães não receberam tratamento. Entre os animais tratados, 99,3% utilizaram protocolo com sulfato de vincristina e em 77,2% o tratamento resultou em remissão total da neoplasia, com a realização de 4 a 6 sessões do quimioterápico. Conclui-se que o TVT é uma neoplasia frequentemente relacionada a cães sem raça definida, localizados na região genital, com secreção hemorrágica sendo o principal sinal clínico reportado pelos proprietários. O sulfato de vincristina é a terapia mais empregada, com alta eficácia. Entretanto, apesar de ser uma neoplasia com bom prognóstico, o alto índice de não adesão ou abandono ao tratamento representa um importante fator a ser considerado e trabalhado pelos médicos veterinários.

Os roedores são pets comuns nas residências das pessoas, dentre os quais destacam-se o porquinho-da-índia, rato twister e a cobaia doméstica como animais de estimação populares na atualidade. Dentre as enfermidades que podem acometer esses animais estão as diferentes categorias de neoplasias, sobre as quais existem poucos estudos e relatos publicados. Tendo isso em mente, percebe-se a necessidade de incentivar pesquisas sobre o tema, visto que o estudo de neoplasias em roedores pode fornecer informações a respeito das causas e formas de tratamento do câncer não só para estes animais, mas também para outras espécies, incluindo seres humanos. Diante do cenário exposto, o presente artigo tem como objetivo relatar um caso de carcinoma tubulopapilífero em um porquinho-da-índia (Cavia porcellus) atendido no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade de Sorocaba (HOVET/UNISO). Após a retirada cirúrgica da neoplasia o paciente recuperou bem e recebeu alta veterinária.
Rodents are common pets in people's homes, among which the guinea pig, twister rat and domestic guinea pig stand out as popular pets today. Among the diseases that can affect these animals are the different categories of neoplasms, on which there are few studies and published reports. With this in mind, there is a need to encourage research on the subject, since the study of neoplasms in rodents can provide information about the causes and forms of cancer treatment not only for these animals, but also for other species, including humans. In view of the above scenario, this article aims to report a case of tubulopapillary carcinoma in a guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Sorocaba (HOVET /UNISO). After surgical removal of the neoplasm, the patient recovered well and was discharged from the veterinary hospital.

Curcuma longa L., also known as turmeric, has been widely studied for its various therapeutic properties, including antineoplastic action. The ethanolic extract of the plant contains several phenolic compounds, especially curcumin. Osteosarcoma is a predominant bone tumor in dogs and humans, characterized by high metastatic potential and an unfavorable prognosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of turmeric ethanol extract on canine osteosarcoma cells from established culture. The cells were cultured and treated with different curcumin concentrations (0, 10 µM, 20 µM, 50 µM, 100 µM, and 1000 µM) and exposure times (24h, 48h, and 72h). We first performed tetrazolium reduction technique (MTT) assay and calculated IC50. An immunocytochemistry assay was performed after extract treatment to verify the expression of mutated p53 and therefore study the proliferative potential of malignant cells; Bcl-2 and Ki-67 were used to assess apoptosis and the degree of malignancy, respectively. The extract enhanced the proliferation of canine osteosarcoma cells, reaching 3,819.74% at 50 µM of curcumin. The extract also significantly altered the expression of mutated p53 and Ki-67 proteins but not that of Bcl-2, suggesting that it did not induce this antiapoptotic pathway. Overall, these results are prerequisite to better understanding how natural compounds such as turmeric ethanolic extract affect cell proliferation and could be used to treat various diseases.
A Curcuma longa L., planta conhecida popularmente como açafrão, tem sido amplamente estudada por suas diversas propriedades terapêuticas, incluindo a ação antineoplásica. O extrato etanólico da planta contém diversos compostos fenólicos, com destaque para a curcumina. O osteossarcoma é um tumor ósseo predominante em cães e humanos, caracterizado por apresentar alto potencial metastático e prognóstico desfavorável. Procurou-se investigar os efeitos de diferentes concentrações de curcumina do extrato etanólico de açafrão sobre células de osteossarcoma canino de cultura estabelecida. As células foram cultivadas e submetidas ao tratamento com extrato com diferentes concentrações de curcumina (0, 10 µM, 20 µM, 50 µM, 100 µM e 1000 µM) e tempos de exposição (24h, 48h e 72h) pelo EEA. Inicialmente, foram realizados: técnica de redução do tetrazólio (MTT) e cálculo da IC50. Posteriormente, após o tratamento com o extrato, realizou-se o ensaio de imunocitoquímica para verificar a expressão de p53 mutada e estudar o potencial proliferativo das células malignas; Bcl-2, com intuito de averiguar o estímulo de via antiapoptótica; e o marcador Ki-67, que sinaliza aumento no grau de malignidade. O extrato promoveu proliferação de células de osteossarcoma canino, com incremento de até 3819,74% na concentração de 50µM de curcumina. O composto também alterou a expressão das proteínas p53 mutante e Ki-67 significativamente, mas não alterou a expressão de Bcl-2, mostrando que não induziu a via antiapoptótica mediada por esta. Estes resultados demonstram que o extrato etanólico do açafrão apresenta potencial proliferativo sobre células de osteossarcoma canino, sugerindo a necessidade de conscientização e conhecimento dos reais efeitos de determinados compostos naturais, considerados seguros ao serem utilizados como tratamento de diversas enfermidades.

Os tumores do plexo coróide (CPT) são neoplasias raras e histologicamente classificados como papiloma do plexo coróide (PPC), papiloma atípico do plexo coróide (APP) e carcinoma do plexo coróide (CPC). Essas neoplasias foram descritas em humanos, animais domésticos (caninos, felinos, equinos, caprinos) e alguns animais selvagens (cetáceos e aves Psittacidae ). Para nosso melhor conhecimento, aqui relatamos o primeiro CCP em uma pomba orelhuda de vida livre (Columbiformes; Zenaida auriculata, de Murs 1847). Histologicamente, o ventrículo estava dilatado, com proliferação papilar (padrão arboriforme) em topografia de PC. A neoplasia era bem diferenciada, composta por uma única camada de células cuboidais, ancoradas em um delicado estroma fibrovascular. As células neoplásicas exibiam estroma moderado, com bordas bem definidas e núcleos arredondados, com cromatina vesicular e nucléolos imperceptíveis. A atividade mitótica foi baixa (<1 mitose por 10 campos de grande aumento). A imunohistoquímica para marcadores de citoqueratina (anticorpo AE1 / AE3) foi implementada, entretanto, tanto as células neoplásicas quanto os tecidos epiteliais normais não apresentam imunorreatividade.

Background: In birds, neoplasms are more frequently observed in Psittaciformes and Galliformes and rarely seen in Columbiformes and Anseriformes, with few reports of the occurrence of mesenchymal neoplasms such as leiomyosarcoma affecting birds. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe a case of metastatic leiomyosarcoma in an African goose (Anser cygnoides), analyzing the epidemiological, clinical and pathological aspects. Case: A 10-month-old male African goose, was referred to the Veterinary Hospital, Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Patos, Paraiba, Brazil, whit ataxia, tremors of intention in the head, and nystagmus about one month ago, progressing to lateral decubitus. Due to the unfavorable prognosis, animal was euthanized. Samples of the organs of the coelomic cavity and central nervous system were collected for histologic examination. The samples were fixed in 10% buffered formalin. After fixation, the organs were embedded in paraffin, cut into 4-5 µm sections, and then stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Paraffin blocks with liver, kidney and encephalon fragments were selected and sent for immunohistochemical analysis. The primary antibodies used were: alpha-smooth muscle actin (monoclonal 1A4), anti-vimentin (monoclonal, V9), CD57 (monoclonal, NK1) and cytokeratin (monoclonal, AE1/AE3) and incubated for 18 h at 4Cº. As an amplification and detection system polymer and labeled by addition of the liquid diaminobenzidine+substratechromogen system and counterstained with Harris hematoxylin. Macroscopically were observed in the liver nodular multifocal areas yellowish, sometimes coalescing, firm, and elevated to the surface that at the cut deepened to the parenchyma. In the left kidney there was a similar tumor mass. In the left frontal lobe, there was nodular focal area, well circumscribed, yellowish and protruding. To cutting surface it compressed the parietal and temporal lobe and showed surface yellowish and smooth. Microscopically, the liver was diffusely infiltrated by mesenchymal neoplasia, expansive, infiltrative, poorly circumscribed and not encapsulated, constituted by spindle cells arranged in interlaced bundles. The cells were elongated with sparse cytoplasm, slightly eosinophilic and indistinct borders with rounded to elongated nuclei, with coarse chromatin and evident nucleoli. In fragments of kidney and brain, neoplastic infiltration similar to that described in the liver was observed. In immunohistochemistry, neoplastic cells were positive with antibodies anti-vimentin and alpha-smooth muscle actin. Discussion: The diagnosis of metastatic leiomyosarcoma in an African goose was based on epidemiological, clinical and pathological findings and confirmed by immunohistochemistry. Reports of neoplasms in birds are relatively rare, however the occurrence of metastatic leiomyosarcoma affecting goose in the most varied locations has been described, from skin to organs of the coelomic cavity like kidney, ovary and intestinal wall. In this case, there is the unusual occurrence of dissemination in the liver, kidney and cerebral cortex, progressing to a neurological clinic condition. There are rare cases of metastatic leiomyosarcoma in geese African goose (Anser cygnoides). The main differential diagnoses include fibrosarcomas, neurofibrosarcomas and histiocytic sarcomas, which are similar macroscopically and histologically.

O lipoma infiltrativo é uma neoplasia benigna rara que acomete os adipócitos. Apresenta etiologia desconhecida, sem raça predisponente. É altamente agressivo, não metastático e com índices de recidivas significativos. Um cão da raça Shih Tzu, macho, castrado e com 7 anos e 7 meses foi atendido na clínica veterinária da Universidade Salvador, com queixa de tumoração em membro torácico esquerdo, presente já há 5 anos. Exames de imagem, histopatológico e cirurgia confirmaram o diagnóstico de lipoma infiltrativo em tórax e membro torácico esquerdo. O tratamento preconizado foi amputação do membro devido a magnitude da infiltração. Para o pós-operatório foi realizada fisioterapia e acompanhamento. A recidiva, em região dorsal, se deu após 82 dias de cirurgia e novamente se optou pelo procedimento cirúrgico.
Infiltrative lipoma is a rare benign neoplasm that affects adipocytes. It has unknown etiology, with no predisposing race. It is highly aggressive, non-metastatic and with significant relapse rates. A Shih Tzu dog, male, neutered, 7 years and 7 months old, was seen at the veterinary clinic of Salvador University, complaining of tumor in the left thoracic limb. Imaging, surgery and histopathological exams to confirm the diagnosis of infiltrative lipoma in the chest and left thoracic limb presente for 5 years. The recommended treatment was amputation of the limb due to the magnitude of the infiltration. In the postoperative period, physiotherapy and follow-up were performed, recurrence in the dorsal region occurred 82 days after the surgery and the surgical procedure was again chosen.

O adenocarcinoma de glândula apócrina raramente é relatado em cães, acometendo principalmente animais idosos e não tendo propensão entre machos ou fêmeas. Habitualmente, apresentam-se por nódulos únicos, podendo chegar até 10cm de diâmetro e, nos cães, os membros torácicos e pélvicos são os sítios de predileção. Geralmente, as neoplasias de glândulas apócrinas têm comportamento benigno, quando estas apresentam potencial maligno observam-se recidivas através de disseminação linfática e sanguínea. Relatou-se o caso de um cão macho, da raça Poodle, de 16 anos de idade, não castrado. A queixa principal referiu-se a uma lesão em orelha direita que apresentava secreção sanguinopurulenta há 30 dias, porém, ao exame físico, foi observado pequena massa no membro torácico direito, juntamente com linfonodo subescapular direito reativo. Foi colhido material de ambos os locais para exame citológico, o qual teve um resultado inconclusivo. Foi realizada nodulectomia em membro torácico direito, linfadenectomia subescapular e nodulectomia auricular. O material foi enviado para análise histopatológica. O diagnóstico foi de adenocarcinoma de glândula apócrina em membro torácico com metástase para linfonodo pré-escapular e de epitelioma sebáceo na lesão auricular. A tutora não aderiu ao protocolo quimioterápico proposto e o paciente veio a óbito após 30 dias do procedimento cirúrgico.
The apocrine gland adenocarcinoma is rarely reported in dogs, common in dogs and having no sex predisposition. They usually present a single lump reaching up 10 cm in diameter. In dogs, the thoracic and pelvic limbs are the common sites. Generally, the apocrine gland neoplasms have a benign behavior; metastasis can occur through lymphatic and blood dissemination when they are malignant. We report the case of a 16-year-old, uncastrated, male Poodle dog. The client reported a lesion in the right ear that had purulent and bloody discharge for 30 days, however, on physical examination, a small mass was observed in the right thoracic limb together with a reactive right subscapular lymph node. Samples were collected from both sites for cytological examination, which had an inconclusive result. Nodulectomy was performed on the right thoracic limb, subscapular lyphadenectomy and auricular nodulectomy. The histopathological analysis revealed an apocrine gland adenocarcinoma in the thoracic limb with metastasis to the cervical lymph node and sebaceous epithelioma in the auricular lesion. The client refused the chemotherapy protocol proposed and, the patient died 30 days after the surgical procedure.

Plasmocitomas são geralmente incomuns em cães, representando cerca de 3% das neoplasias, e, em gatos, esse número é ainda menor, sendo consideradas raras e observadas em aproximadamente 1% dos casos. Objetiva-se com este trabalho apresentar um relato de caso de uma doença muito pouco relatada na oncologia veterinária, o plasmocitoma extramedular oral em felinos domésticos. A metodologia empregada para a construção deste trabalho deu-se por meio de: consulta a referências bibliográficas; observação e acompanhamento dos processos realizados no âmbito hospitalar, além da consulta ao prontuário médico do paciente. Embora muito descrita na literatura a utilização da cirurgia de mandibulectomia ou maxilectomia na terapia de plasmocitomas orais em cães, são escassos os relatos do emprego da técnica em gatos. Porém, é certo afirmar que a eletroquimioterapia, associada à quimioterapia antineoplásica adjuvante, promoveu uma ótima sobrevida (407 dias), sem comprometimento na qualidade de vida do paciente, mostrando que, mesmo com um tratamento menos invasivo e conservador, foi possível cuidar do paciente de maneira efetiva. Uma grande dificuldade, durante todo o processo, foi a falta de relatos científicos específicos para o plasmocitoma oral em felinos. As neoplasias orais em felinos e, principalmente, as originadas por plasmócitos precisam ser mais estudadas e relatadas, promovendo maior conhecimento técnico e científico a todos os profissionais da área.
Plasmocytomas are generally uncommon in dogs, representing about 3% of neoplasms, and in cats, this number is even lower, being considered rare and observed in approximately 1% of cases. The aim of this work is to present a case report of a disease that is rarely reported in veterinary oncology: oral extramedullary plasmacytoma in domestic cats. The methodology used for the construction of this work was given through: consultation of bibliographic references; observation and monitoring of processes performed in the hospital, in addition to consulting the patient's medical record. Although the use of mandibulectomy or maxillectomy surgery to treat oral plasmacytomas in dogs is widely described in the literature, there are few reports on the use of the technique in cats. However, it is true to say that electrochemotherapy, associated with adjuvant antineoplastic chemotherapy, promoted an excellent survival (407 days), without compromising the patient's quality of life, showing that even with a less invasive and conservative treatment it was possible to care for the patient in a way effective. A major difficulty throughout the process was the lack of specific scientific reports for oral plasmacytoma in felines. Oral neoplasms in felines and mainly those originating from plasmocytes need to be further studied and reported, promoting greater technical and scientific knowledge to all professionals in the field.

O seminoma é uma neoformação testicular originária de células germinativas de ocorrência comum em cães, com maior prevalência em animais senis. Em geral, o comportamento biológico do seminoma canino é benigno. Relata-se neste trabalho um caso de seminoma com metástase em região orbital em um cão com 14 anos de idade. O animal foi atendido com queixa de aumento de volume em órbita esquerda, com posterior detecção de nódulo testicular. A punção aspirativa por agulha fina da massa orbital sugeriu tratar-se de linfoma de alto grau, contudo o diagnóstico definitivo de seminoma difuso foi estabelecido pela avaliação histopatológica, a qual revelou tratar-se de neoplasia maligna pouco diferenciada, sendo o diagnóstico de seminoma difuso confirmado pelo exame imunoistoquímico. Relatos de seminomas metastáticos em cães são incomuns. Objetivou-se com este trabalho relatar um caso de seminoma anaplásico difuso em cão cujo foco principal de metástase ocorreu em região orbital, além de descrever e discutir as dificuldades diagnósticas encontradas.(AU)
Seminoma is a testicular neoformation originating from germ cells, commonly occurring in dogs. With higher prevalence in senile animals, the biological behavior of canine seminomas generally benign. This case reports seminoma with mestastasis in the orbital region in a 14-year-old dog. The animal was treated with a complaint of increased volume in the left orbit, and later a nodule in the testicle was discovered. Fine-needle aspiration of the orbit mass initially indicated a high-grade lymphoma. The definitive diagnosis of diffused seminoma was established by histopathological examination, resulting in poorly differentiated malignant neoplasia. Finally, the diagnosis was confirmed through immunohistochemistry, being the result compatible with diffused seminoma. Metastatic seminomas reported in dogs are quite uncommon. In this work we report a case of diffused anaplastic seminoma in dogs, where the main focus of metastasis was observed in the orbital region, and we also describe and discuss the difficulties encountered in the diagnostic.(AU)

Background: Surgical access to the spinal cord at the level of C2 vertebra presents technical limitations, due to anatomical particularities in this region. The ventral slot technique does not allow space for the removal of dorsolateral masses. The axis hemilaminectomy technique provides limited access to the dorsal aspect of spinal cord and there is a risk of damaging the vertebral arteries. The axis dorsal laminotomy technique allows good access to spinal cord and preserves the atlantoaxial and nuchal ligaments, however few papers describe this technique. The objective of this paper is to report the axis dorsal laminotomy performed in a dog with a meningioma at this level. Case: An 11-year-old male, Maltese dog, was presented with a 15-day history of progressive weakness, intense cervical pain and difficulty in locomotion of the four limbs. He was being treated with painkillers without improvement. On clinical examination, the physiological parameters were normal. Neurological examination showed tetraparesis with the syndrome localized in the cranial cervical region. The main differential diagnoses were intervertebral disc disease, neoplasia, inflammatory or infectious disease. Computed tomography was performed and the evaluation of images allowed the visualization of an intradural-extramedullary neoplastic process, promoting important spinal compression, with approximate dimensions of the lesion 0.70 cm high x 0.67 cm wide x 0.78 cm long, with apparent involvement of the meninges, with a more lateralized location on the left, with meningioma being the main differential diagnosis. Thus, exploratory surgery, through the technique of dorsal laminotomy of the axis was performed. This research aimed to describe a clinical case of ovarian dysgerminoma in a bitch, by showing clinical, ultrasound, surgical and pathological findings. The research also sought to emphasize the importance of establishing an early and definitive diagnosis through histopathology, establishing appropriate protocols for each patient. Ovarian tumors have a low incidence in dogs and cats. Dysgerminomas are a type of ovarian germ cell tumor. They develop in dogs of variable age, that may present clinical signs of hormonal imbalance such as persistent estrus, or pyometra. Prognosis is good in animals that undergo surgery and show no evidence of metastasis. This article presents a clinical case of a 6-year-old English Bulldog with persistent estrus for 2 months, and slightly depressed mental state. Ultrasound revealed the presence of a mass on the left ovary and uterine content. Ovariohysterectomy was performed and the mass was submitted to histopathological exam, which diagnosed an ovarian dysgerminoma.(AU)
Neste trabalho descrevem-se caso clínico, achados de ultrassom, cirúrgicos e patológicos de disgerminoma ovárico em cadela. Os tumores ováricos têm baixa incidência em cães e gatos. Nesta categoria estão os tumores das células germinativas, a partir das quais se desenvolvem os disgerminomas. Acomete cadelas de idades variáveis, que podem apresentar sinais clínicos indiciando alterações hormonais, como cio persistente, ou piometra. O prognóstico em animais tratados cirurgicamente, sem evidência de metástase, é bom. Esta pesquisa relata um caso clínico em cadela, raça Bulldog Inglês, de 6 anos de idade, com presença de cio persistente por dois meses. O ultrassom revelou a presença de massa ao nível do ovário esquerdo e escasso conteúdo uterino. Foi realizada ovariohisterectomia e a peça cirúrgica foi enviada para anatomia patológica, que diagnosticou disgerminoma ovarico. Após a resolução do caso, ressalta-se a importancia do diagnóstico clinico e histopatológico precoce para estabelecer protocolos de tratamento adequados.(AU)

O seminoma é uma neoformação testicular originária de células germinativas de ocorrência comum em cães, com maior prevalência em animais senis. Em geral, o comportamento biológico do seminoma canino é benigno. Relata-se neste trabalho um caso de seminoma com metástase em região orbital em um cão com 14 anos de idade. O animal foi atendido com queixa de aumento de volume em órbita esquerda, com posterior detecção de nódulo testicular. A punção aspirativa por agulha fina da massa orbital sugeriu tratar-se de linfoma de alto grau, contudo o diagnóstico definitivo de seminoma difuso foi estabelecido pela avaliação histopatológica, a qual revelou tratar-se de neoplasia maligna pouco diferenciada, sendo o diagnóstico de seminoma difuso confirmado pelo exame imunoistoquímico. Relatos de seminomas metastáticos em cães são incomuns. Objetivou-se com este trabalho relatar um caso de seminoma anaplásico difuso em cão cujo foco principal de metástase ocorreu em região orbital, além de descrever e discutir as dificuldades diagnósticas encontradas.(AU)
Seminoma is a testicular neoformation originating from germ cells, commonly occurring in dogs. With higher prevalence in senile animals, the biological behavior of canine seminomas generally benign. This case reports seminoma with mestastasis in the orbital region in a 14-year-old dog. The animal was treated with a complaint of increased volume in the left orbit, and later a nodule in the testicle was discovered. Fine-needle aspiration of the orbit mass initially indicated a high-grade lymphoma. The definitive diagnosis of diffused seminoma was established by histopathological examination, resulting in poorly differentiated malignant neoplasia. Finally, the diagnosis was confirmed through immunohistochemistry, being the result compatible with diffused seminoma. Metastatic seminomas reported in dogs are quite uncommon. In this work we report a case of diffused anaplastic seminoma in dogs, where the main focus of metastasis was observed in the orbital region, and we also describe and discuss the difficulties encountered in the diagnostic.(AU)

Sebaceous tumors are common in dogs. These tumors include both benign and malignant lesions. Immunohistochemical evaluation of these tumors can aggregate information regarding the origin and degree of malignancy of the lesions. Focusing on this matter, sixty-one samples including normal skin and sebaceous tumors were selected from dogs of various breeds and ages, with no predilection for sex, from the archive of Veterinary Pathology Service of Federal Fluminense University, Niterói/RJ, Brazil. The samples underwent to histological processing, routine staining and immunohistochemistry with anti-PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen). Descriptive statistical analysis was performed, the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the distribution of anti-PCNA labelling in different groups of variables. In case there were more than two groups, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test was performed. The mean age of the affected animals was 10.56 years. The most affected breeds were Caniches and Cocker Spaniels, as well as mixed breed animals. There was immunostaining of PCNA in both benign and malignant tumors, as well as in hyperplasic lesions with varying intensity. Most of the tumors were neoplasms which represented 67.27% of the total sample; within these, 75.00% were benign. The most frequent neoplasm was sebaceous adenoma (37.74%). Results indicated no statistical difference in the distribution of anti-PCNA labelling between the groups of sex, age, reproductive status, localization, size of tumor, and histopathological diagnosis. Although there are not many studies analyzing anti-PCNA labelling in sebaceous tumors, several of them pointed out to the predictive value in other neoplasms. With this matter in mind, we intended to evaluate the expression of anti-PCNA in canine sebaceous tumor and a possible association with the malignancy of the lesions.

A avaliação imunohistoquímica desses tumores pode agregar informações sobre a origem e o grau de malignidade das lesões. Para este fim, sessenta e uma amostras, incluindo pele normal e tumores sebáceos foram selecionadas de cães de várias raças e idades, sem predileção por sexo, do arquivo do Serviço de Patologia Veterinária da Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói/RJ, Brasil. As amostras passaram por processamento histológico, coloração de rotina e imuno-histoquímica com anti-PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen). Foram realizadas análises estatísticas descritivas além dos testes de Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney para comparar a distribuição da marcação de anti-PCNA entre grupos de variáveis. Para variáveis com mais de dois grupos, aplicou-se a Análise de Variância (ANOVA). A idade média dos animais afetados foi de 10.56 anos. Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma is responsible for more than 90% of head and neck neoplasms in humans.Multiple factors are associated with the development of squamous cell carcinomas in humans and animals, such as prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light, lack of pigment in the epidermis, or sparse hair coverage. In horses, oral forms arerare and represent 7% of cases, but sarcoids are the main type of oral neoplasia. In the present case, due to the location andanatomical dimensions of the oral vestibule, it was necessary to adapt it to the natural tumor excision, a fact that aimedto describe this report.Case: One Arabian 2- year-old male horse, treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Santa Cruz State University (UESC),with signs of severe mouth bleeding and halitosis. Clinical inspection of the face showed elevation in the masseter regionand left mandible branch. Clinical examination of the oral cavity revealed soft tissue tumor extending from tooth 308(PM-1, lower left) to 311 (M-3, lower left) and on the buccal surface of the left mandible branch. Radiographic examination revealed no invasion of bone tissue by the tumor. Biopsy material was collected. The histopathological report was ofneoplastic cell proliferation, frequent mitoses, binucleate cells and extensive ulceration area associated with neutrophilicinflammatory infiltrate, indicative of squamous cell carcinoma. The animal was referred to the Surgical Sector who, afterevaluation of the animal, opted for the ablation of the neoplasia. Pre-anesthesia performed with intravenous detomidine30 µg/kg, anesthesia with regional mandibular nerve block with 20 mL of 2% lidocaine and maintenance with continuousinfusion of detoxid 0.5 µg/kg/ min. Sebaceous tumors are common in dogs and include benign and malignant lesions. The increase in immunohistochemical evaluation of sebaceous tumors aggregates information regarding the origin and degree of malignancy of the lesions. The objective of this study was to evaluate PCNA immunohistochemical expression of sebaceous tumors in dogs. Sixty-one samples include normal skin and sebaceous tumors were selected from dogs of various breeds and ages, no gender predilection, sent to the Veterinary Pathology Service of Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói/RJ, Brazil. Samples passed through histological processing, routine staining and immunostaining from PCNA. Descriptive statistical analysis, Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney and Fishers exact test were performed. The mean age of the affected animals was 10.56 years. There was no sexual predilection. Breeds more frequently affected were: Poodles, mixed-breed dogs and Cocker Spaniels. Most of the tumors were neoplasms (67.27%), and 75.67% of those were benign. Sebaceous adenoma was the most frequent neoplasm (56.75%). PCNA immunoexpression was present in hyperplasia, benign and malignant tumors. No previous studies were found using PCNA antibody in sebaceous tumors of dogs.
