Resumo

Purpose: The effects of hesperidin application on the wound caused by esophageal burns were investigated in this study. Methods: Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups: Control group: only 1 mL of 0.09% NaCl was administered i.p. for 28 days; Burn group: An alkaline esophageal burn model was created with 0.2 mL of 25% NaOH orally by gavage­1 mL of 0.09% NaCl was administered i.p. for 28 days; Burn+Hesperidin group: 1 mL of 50 mL/kg of hesperidin was given i.p. for 28 days to rats after burn injury. Blood samples were collected for biochemical analysis. Esophagus samples were processed for histochemical staining and immunohistochemistry. Results: Malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels were significantly increased in Burn group. Glutathione (GSH) content and histological scores of epithelialization, collagen formation, neovascularization was decreased. After hesperidin treatment, these values were significantly improved in the Burn+Hesperidin group. In the Burn group, epithelial cells and muscular layers were degenerated. Hesperidin treatment restored these pathologies in Burn+Hesperidin group. Ki-67 and caspase-3 expressions were mainly negative in control group; however, the expression was increased in the Burn group. In the Burn+Hesperidin group, Ki-67 and caspase-3 immune activities were reduced. Conclusion: Hesperidin dosage and application methods can be developed as an alternative treatment for burn healing and treatment.

La estenosis esofágica es una alteración morfofuncional que provoca una lesión inflamatoria en las capas submucosas y musculares del esófago, induciéndolas a la fibrosis y alterando el diámetro esofágico. El presente informe aborda el uso de un dilatador de balón como vía auxiliar para corregir la estenosis esofágica en un paciente canino, hembra, Pug, con antecedentes de vómitos recurrentes como principal síntoma. Mediante endoscopia se observó que el esófago torácico estaba inflamado, con mucosa engrosada y fibrótica, además de anillos fibrosos de color blanquecino, lo que dificultaba el paso de la sonda, lo que permitía determinar el diagnóstico de estenosis esofágica. En este informe se optó por el uso de balón dilatador, realizándose tres procedimientos con una semana de diferencia, para mejorar la condición sintomática. Tras el procedimiento dilatador, fue posible el desarrollo favorable del cuadro clínico presentado por el paciente.

Through endoscopy, it was observed that the thoracic esophagus was inflamed, with thickened and fibrotic mucosa, in addition to whitish colored fibrous rings, which hindered the passage of the probe, enabling the determination of the diagnosis of esophageal stenosis. In this report, we opted for the use of a dilator balloon, with three procedures being performed one week apart, to improve the symptomatic condition. After the dilator procedure, the favorable development of the clinical condition presented by the patient was possible.


A estenose esofágica é uma alteração morfofuncional que ocasiona em lesão inflamatória das camadas submucosa e muscular do esôfago, induzindo-as a fibrose e que altera o diâmetro esofágico. O presente relato aborda a utilização de balão dilatador, como forma auxiliar de correção de estenose esofágica em paciente canino, fêmea, da raça Pug, apresentando histórico de vômitos recorrentes como queixa principal. Por meio da endoscopia, observou-se que o esôfago torácico estava inflamado, com a mucosa espessada e fibrótica, além de anéis fibrosos de coloração esbranquiçada, o que dificultava a passagem da sonda, possibilitando a determinação do diagnóstico de estenose esofágica. Nesse relato, optou-se pelo uso do balão dilatador, sendo feitos três procedimentos intervalados de uma semana entre eles, para a melhora da condição sintomática. Após o procedimento dilatador, foi possível o desenvolvimento favorável do quadro clínico apresentado pela paciente.

Resumo

Background: Esophageal neoplasms are rarely reported in cats. The frequency rate is less than 0.5% and those neoplasms are usually malignant. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an idiopathic epithelial neoplasm, invasive and metastatic that can induce partial or complete obstruction of the esophageal lumen. There is no breed or sex predisposition, and it is more common in cats over 8-years-old. Esophageal SCC is more frequent in the middle third of the esophagus. The prognosis is poor, as the cats are usually diagnosed at an advanced stage. This report aims to describe clinical, endoscopic, radiographic, and pathological features of two cases of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in cats. Cases: A 11-year-old neutered male cat presenting regurgitation, weight loss, anorexia and dyspnea was referred to veterinary internal medicine care. Simple and contrast-enhanced radiographic images of the cervical and thoracic regions showed an alveolar pattern in the cranial lung lobes and signs of esophageal lumen irregularity and dilatation in the mediastinum topography. The upper digestive endoscopy showed a dilated esophageal lumen, and an irregular mass was observed in the thoracic esophagus involving the entire esophageal circumference. Biopsy fragments were collected, and the histopathological result was compatible with squamous cell carcinoma. The second case was a 10-year-old neutered male cat presenting hyporexia, regurgitation, dyspnea, tachypnea, and abnormal breath sounds. The ultrasound of the chest showed 3 amorphous hypoechogenic and heterogeneous areas in the right and left hemithorax between parietal and visceral pleura. The cytological examination was compatible with a malignant epithelial tumor. The patient died 3 months after the onset of clinical signs. At gross exam, it was observed a friable, irregular, and ulcerated mass of 5.0 x 3.0 cm in the middle third of the esophagus...

Resumo

The Muscovy duck is a commercially important bird on the island of Marajó usually raised in a peculiar system that includes supplying fish viscera to the birds under semi-extensive farming conditions. This enables a risk of contamination and losses in the production of these birds, resulting from injuries caused by helminth infections, especially nematodes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the histopathological changes caused by nematodes of the genera: Eucoleus, Anisakis and Contracaecum. Thirty-three ducks with lesions in the esophagus and ventricle were analyzed. Histopathological exams showed a mild inflammatory infiltrate in the submucosa of the esophagus caused by the fixation of E. contortus and third stage larvae of Anisakis sp., and we recorded third stage larvae of Contracaecum sp. parasitizing the ventricle, this being the first record of this parasite in ducks in Brazil.(AU)


O pato doméstico é uma ave amplamente comercializada na Ilha de Marajó, com um peculiar manejo que inclui a oferta de vísceras de peixes aos animais em criações semiextensivas, propiciando, assim, risco de contaminação e perdas na produção dessas aves decorrentes de lesões oriundas de infecções por helmintos, especialmente os nematódeos. Nesse sentido, objetivou-se avaliar as alterações histopatológicas causadas por nematódeos dos gêneros: Eucoleus, Anisakis e Contracaecum. Foram analisados 33 patos, e três exemplares apresentaram lesões no esôfago e no ventrículo. Exames histopatológicos demonstraram discreto infiltrado inflamatório na submucosa do esôfago ocasionado pela fixação de E. contortus e larvas de terceiro estágio de Anisakis sp., bem como foram registradas larvas de terceiro estágio de Contracaecum sp. parasitando o ventrículo, sendo esse o primeiro registro desse parasito em patos no Brasil.(AU)

Resumo

Corpos estranhos (CE) esofágicos são objetos inanimados que podem causar obstrução total ou parcial do lúmen esofágico, comumente causam disfagia, regurgitação e vômito. A casuísta de obstrução por CE esofágico é elevada na clínica de pequenos animais. O tratamento constitui na remoção do CE e correção de possíveis alterações secundárias. Dessa forma, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi relatar um caso de obstrução por CE em porção de esôfago torácico, tendo como fim aprofundar conhecimentos a respeito de obstrução esofágica de forma geral, desde as manifestações clínicas, achados aos exames complementares, diagnóstico e terapêutica.


Esophageal foreign bodies (FB) are inanimate objects that can cause total or partial obstruction of the esophageal lumen, commonly causing dysphagia, regurgitation and vomiting. The number of esophageal FB obstruction is high in the small animal clinic. Treatment consists of removing the FB and correcting secondary changes. Thus, the objective of the present study was to report a case of obstruction by a FB in a group of thoracic esophagus, with the purpose of deepening the knowledge about esophageal obstruction in general, from clinical manifestations, findings to complementary exams, diagnosis and technical.

Background: Dogs and cats with acute signs of choking, retching, cough, vomiting, regurgitation, hypersalivation, dysphagiaand odynophagia should have the presence of a gastrointestinal foreign body (FB) as part of their differential diagnosis,where it is a frequent condition in the care of small animals. Most objects lodged in the esophagus, stomach, and proximalduodenum can be removed by upper digestive endoscopy, a curative, little invasive procedure. The objective of our studywas to evaluate the physical aspects and location of esophageal and gastric FBs observed in 88 dogs and the age and breedof the affected animals, and to determine the success rate and eventual complications associated with the procedure as well.Materials, Methods & Results: Eighty-eight cases of dogs, males and females of varying ages and breeds, submitted toupper digestive endoscopy were selected because of suspicion of esophageal or gastric FBs. The endoscopic procedureaimed at confirming the diagnosis, whether or not followed by endoscopic removal of these objects. Prior to endoscopy,the animals had laboratory tests (blood count and serum biochemistry) and subsequently to the anesthetic protocols ofchoice for each case. Data including breed, age, type of constituent material and anatomical location of the FB, endoscopicprocedure success rate and complications were recorded and descriptively evaluated. Of the 88 dogs evaluated, 60% (n= 53) were male and 40% (n = 35) female. According to the breed of the animals, 55% (n = 49) were small-breed dogs,29% (n = 25) large-breed dogs, and 8% (n = 7) medium-breed dogs, and 8% were of mixed breed dogs, which could assume various sizes. Shih tzus accounted for 18% (n = 16) of the animals...

Resumo

Among the avian used for human consumption, the Muscovy duck is well adapted to various climatic conditions and its breeding is widespread due to its easy handling, and its meat is widely consumed and appreciated, especially in the cuisine of northern Brazil. The present study aimed to report and identify taxonomically the nematodes found in the esophagus of Muscovy ducks reared and marketed in the municipality of Soure, Marajó Island, state of Pará, Brazil, and discuss its zoonotic potential to human. The samples consisted of 30 specimens of Cairina moschata domestica analyzed. A total of 258 nematodes were recovered, which were strongly fixed in the esophageal mucosa of hosts. The morphological and morphometric characteristics were compatible with Anisakis third-stage larvae.(AU)


Entre as aves utilizadas para consumo humano, o pato doméstico está bem adaptado às várias condições climáticas. Sua criação é muito difundida devido ao seu fácil manejo. E sua carne é amplamente consumida e apreciada, principalmente na culinária do norte do Brasil. O presente estudo teve como objetivo relatar e identificar taxonomicamente os nematódeos encontrados no esôfago de patos domésticos, criados e comercializados no município de Soure, Ilha de Marajó, estado do Pará, Brasil. E também discutir o seu potencial zoonótico para o homem. As amostras consistiram em 30 espécimes de Cairina moschata domestica analisados. Um total de 258 nematódeos foram recuperados, fortemente fixados na mucosa esofágica dos hospedeiros. As características morfológicas e morfométricas foram compatíveis com as larvas de terceiro estágio de Anisakis.(AU)

Caseous lesions in the esophagus of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) from the coast of Brazil have been described as obstructive lesions and can lead to the death of these animals. However, their etiology remains unclear. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize the aerobic bacterial microbiota of the esophagus of green turtles (C. mydas) from the Brazilian coast and to verify its possible participation in the etiology of caseous lesions. For this, 42 animals were used, 33 alive and healthy and 9 naturally dead that had esophageal lesions confirmed by necropsy, from Anchieta and Piúma beaches, Espírito Santo. Microbiological tests and morphological evaluation of the esophagus were performed. We isolated 14 different bacterial agents from healthy animal samples, with the prevalence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa being (36.36%), Staphylococcus aureus (33.33%), Aeromonas hydrophila (27.27%), and Vibrio alginolyticus (24.24%). In dead animals, only three distinct agents were isolated: S. aureus (50.00%), A. hydrophila (25.00%), and V. alginolyticus (25.00%). Morphological evaluation revealed a predominance of the lesions at the gastroesophageal junction, with multifocal-to-coalescent distribution, discrete intensity, and absence of obstruction. Ulcerations and caseous exudates, inflammatory infiltrates, parasitic eggs, and giant foreign body cells were also observed as well as bacterial lumps and glandular alterations, such as necrosis, adenitis, and fragments of adult parasites. There was a positive correlation between bacterial lumps and microbiological culture and a negative correlation between bacterial lumps and microbiological culture with parasites. Thus, it was noted that the esophageal aerobic microbiota of C. mydas was predominantly composed of Gram-negative bacteria such as P. aeruginosa, A. hydrophila, and V. alginolyticus, in addition to several enterobacteria and Gram-positive bacteria, such as S. aureus. These agents are opportunists and may be involved in the etiology of caseous esophagitis in association with other pathogens as co-factors working in association or, even in a secondary way.(AU)


A ocorrência de lesão caseosa no esôfago de tartarugas-verdes (Chelonia mydas) da costa do Brasil tem sido descrita como de caráter obstrutivo e pode causar a morte dos animais. No entanto, sua etiologia permanece pouco esclarecida. Objetivou-se isolar e caracterizar a microbiota aeróbica esofágica das tartarugas-verdes (C. mydas) da costa brasileira e verificar sua possível participação na etiologia das lesões caseosas. Foram utilizados 42 animais, 33 vivos e hígidos e nove mortos naturalmente que apresentavam lesão esofágica confirmada pela necropsia, provenientes de Anchieta e Piúma, Espírito Santo, nos quais foram feitos testes microbiológicos e avaliação morfológica do esôfago. Foram isolados 14 agentes bacterianos diferentes nas amostras de animais saudáveis, com prevalência de Pseudomonas aeruginosa (36,36%), Staphylococcus aureus (33,33%), Aeromonas hydrophila (27,27%) e Vibrio alginolyticus (24,24%). Nos animais mortos, foram isolados apenas três agentes distintos: S. aureus (50,00%), A. hydrophila (25,00%) e V. alginolyticus (25,00%). A avaliação morfológica revelou predominância da lesão em junção gastroesofágica, com distribuição multifocal a coalescente, intensidade discreta e ausência de obstrução. Observou-se ainda ulceração e exsudato caseoso, infiltrado inflamatório, ovos de parasitos e células gigantes do tipo corpo estranho, além de grumos bacterianos e de alterações glandulares, como necrose, adenite e fragmentos de parasitos adultos. Houve correlação positiva dos grumos bacterianos com cultivo microbiológico e negativa dos grumos bacterianos e cultivo microbiológico com parasitos. Assim, nota-se que a microbiota esofágica aeróbica de C. mydas é constituída predominantemente por bactérias Gram-negativas como P. aeruginosa, A. hydrophila e V. alginolyticus, além de diversas enterobatérias e por Gram-positivas, como S. aureus. Esses agentes são oportunistas e podem estar envolvidos na etiologia da esofagite caseosa em associação a outros patógenos como co-fatores agindo em associação, ou mesmo, por via de infecção secundária.(AU)

Thus, it was noted that the esophageal aerobic microbiota of C. mydas was predominantly composed of Gram-negative bacteria such as P. aeruginosa, A. hydrophila, and V. alginolyticus, in addition to several enterobacteria and Gram-positive bacteria, such as S. aureus. These agents are opportunists and may be involved in the etiology of caseous esophagitis in association with other pathogens as co-factors working in association or, even in a secondary way.(AU)


A ocorrência de lesão caseosa no esôfago de tartarugas-verdes (Chelonia mydas) da costa do Brasil tem sido descrita como de caráter obstrutivo e pode causar a morte dos animais. No entanto, sua etiologia permanece pouco esclarecida. Objetivou-se isolar e caracterizar a microbiota aeróbica esofágica das tartarugas-verdes (C. mydas) da costa brasileira e verificar sua possível participação na etiologia das lesões caseosas. Foram utilizados 42 animais, 33 vivos e hígidos e nove mortos naturalmente que apresentavam lesão esofágica confirmada pela necropsia, provenientes de Anchieta e Piúma, Espírito Santo, nos quais foram feitos testes microbiológicos e avaliação morfológica do esôfago. Foram isolados 14 agentes bacterianos diferentes nas amostras de animais saudáveis, com prevalência de Pseudomonas aeruginosa (36,36%), Staphylococcus aureus (33,33%), Aeromonas hydrophila (27,27%) e Vibrio alginolyticus (24,24%). Nos animais mortos, foram isolados apenas três agentes distintos: S. aureus (50,00%), A. hydrophila (25,00%) e V. alginolyticus (25,00%). A avaliação morfológica revelou predominância da lesão em junção gastroesofágica, com distribuição multifocal a coalescente, intensidade discreta e ausência de obstrução. Observou-se ainda ulceração e exsudato caseoso, infiltrado inflamatório, ovos de parasitos e células gigantes do tipo corpo estranho, além de grumos bacterianos e de alterações glandulares, como necrose, adenite e fragmentos de parasitos adultos. Houve correlação positiva dos grumos bacterianos com cultivo microbiológico e negativa dos grumos bacterianos e cultivo microbiológico com parasitos. Assim, nota-se que a microbiota esofágica aeróbica de C. mydas é constituída predominantemente por bactérias Gram-negativas como P. aeruginosa, A. hydrophila e V. alginolyticus, além de diversas enterobatérias e por Gram-positivas, como S. aureus. Esses agentes são oportunistas e podem estar envolvidos na etiologia da esofagite caseosa em associação a outros patógenos como co-fatores agindo em associação, ou mesmo, por via de infecção secundária.(AU)

The present study aimed to investigate the macroscopic structure of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of Schizothorax esocinus Heckel, 1838. The surface architecture of the buccopharynx, oesophagus and the entire intestinal tract of S. esocinus has been examined under scanning electron microscope (SEM) after fixing in 2.5% glutaraldehyde buffered with 0.1 M sodium cacodylate at pH 7.3 for 18-48 hours and post-fixation for two hours at room temperature in 1% osmium tetra oxide buffered at pH 7.3 with 0.1 M cacodylate. The mucosal surface of buccopharynx, esophagus, intestinal bulb, and intestine reveal prominent longitudinal major or primary mucosal folds which are further subdivided into the series of irregular and well-circumscribed folds called minor or secondary folds. However, in the intestinal bulb and intestine, the longitudinal major or primary folds themselves form wavy or zigzagging patterns along the mucosal surface. The fine structure of the surface epithelium further shows that the apical surfaces of the epithelial cells are ped with finger-print like microridges, arranged in various patterns and regularly spaced. The rectal mucosa, on the other hand, displays a highly irregular type of major mucosal folds. The separation can’t be seen between major mucosal folds. A thin film of mucous spread over the mucosal folds and the numerous pores through which mucous cells release their content has also been noted along the rectal mucosa. This investigation suggests the possible role of different digestive organs in relation to feeding, digestion, storage, absorption, and various other physiological processes, thereby providing a knowledge necessary to the understanding of pathological or physiological alterations in both aquaculture and natural environment.

Resumo

Squamous cell carcinoma, a malignant epithelial neoplasm originating from the epidermis squamous cells or the digestive mucosa epithelium, was diagnosed in an adult rooster. The rooster was lethargic and presented difficulties in swallowing. Physical examination revealed a large deep mass in the cranial cervical region. Due to poor prognosis, the bird was euthanized and then post mortem examined. Grossly, in the oral portion of the esophagus, there was a mass invading and partially occluding the lumen. Microscopically, the mass had neoplastic cells interconnected by evident desmosomes junctions and keratin pearl formations. Microscopic findings confirmed the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. This neoplasia is an important differential diagnosis for esophageal lesions in birds. There are various carcinogens for squamous cell carcinoma such as sunlight, virus, some chemicals and chronic wounds, the last one being a possible cause of the squamous cell carcinoma in this rooster as no evidence of other etiologies were found.

The megaesophagus a dilatation of the whole or some portions of esophagus, an unusual cat disease can be seen more frequently in dogs is classified as congenital or acquired. The acquired form usually presents in adult dogs from eight years of age, secondary to other disorders, mainly to diseases that cause neuromuscular changes like myasthenia gravis, hypoadrenocorticism and dysautonomia in cats. This report describes a case of megaesophagus secondary to myasthenia gravis in a male, nondefined canine with nine years of age, analyze the diagnosis and treatment methods of applied, bu in the present case, the diagnosis was concluded by thoracic radiography, in addition to the established therapy associated with patient management, which ensured the animal significant clinical improvement and life quality.


O megaesôfago, uma dilatação total ou de partes específicas do esôfago enfermidade incomum em gatos, porém vista com maior frequência em cães é classificada como congênita ou adquirida. A forma adquirida geralmente é observada em cães adultos a partir de oito anos de idade, secundariamente a outros distúrbios, principalmente a doenças que provocam alterações neuromusculares, como miastenia gravis, hipoadrenocorticismo e disautonomia nos gatos. Este relato descreve um caso de megaesôfago secundário à miastenia gravis em um canino, macho, sem raça definida e com nove anos de idade, além de discutir os métodos de diagnóstico e tratamentos dessa enfermidade. Nesse caso, o diagnóstico pôde ser concluído com o emprego da radiografia torácica, além da terapia instituída associada ao manejo do paciente, o que garantiu ao animal melhora clínica significativa e qualidade de vida.

El esofagograma con sulfato de bario reveló retención del medio de contraste y dilatación moderada de la porción del esófago situada entre la cuarta y la novena vértebras torácicas. En la evaluación endoscópica se confirmó el diagnóstico de megaesófago segmentario, a medida que se verificó la distorsión de la porción torácica del esófago, acúmulo de fluidos y alimento y la hipomodidad en el área afectada, sin alteración de las mucosas o señal de estenosis.(AU)


An adult, male, Dorper sheep with a history of regurgitation and postprandial chronic tympanism underwent imaging examinations. In the simple radiographic examination of the cervical and thoracic region were observed a ventral deviation of the trachea and presence of gas in the area of projection of the thoracic esophagus. The barium sulphate esophagogram revealed contrast retention and moderate dilatation of the portion of the esophagus between the fourth and ninth thoracic vertebrae. In the endoscopic evaluation, the diagnosis of segmental megaesophagus was confirmed, as the thoracic portion of the esophagus was distended, fluid and food accumulation and hypomotility were present in the affected area, without any alteration of the mucosa or sign of stenosis.(AU)

O megaesofago adquirido é uma causa pouco frequente de regurgitação em caninos. O diagnóstico é confirmado por radiografias simples ou contrastadas o caso de uma cadela de 9 anos com histórico de regurgitação por seis meses e endoscopia, tomografia, cintilografia ou ressonância magnética. Este trabalho relata Qualittas exames radiográficos simples e contrastados sem evidência de megaesofago. A esofagografia foi repetida por meio do fornecimento de contraste de bário misturado confirmar o megaesofago. Apesar de essa técnica ser pouco realizada, é um método a alimento comercial seco para cães, que permitiu evidenciar a dilatação esofágica e alternativo eficaz no diagnóstico de megaesofago canino, principalmente quando as demais abordagens radiográficas forem inconclusivas.


Diagnosis is confirmed by simple or contrast radiographs, endoscopy, tomography. dogs scintigraphy, or magnetic resonance imaging. Esophagography with barium sulfate contrast is the most commonly used method, however, it may be inconclusive dilation marking does not occur. This paper reports the case of a 9-year-old female dog, with a history of regurgitation over six months, simple and contrast radiographic exams showing no evidence of megaesophagus. The esophagography exam was repeated with the addition of barium contrast mixed with commercial dry pet food which verified esophageal dilatation and confirmed megaesophagus. Although this aluno de graduação technique is not widely used, it is an effective alternative method for diagnosis of canine.


El megaesofago adquirido es una causa poco frecuente de regurgitación en caninos. El diagnóstico se realiza por medio de radiografías simples y contrastadas. endoscopia, tomografía, centellografía o resonancia magnética. Este trabajo relata el caso de una perra de 9 años, con histórico de regurgitación de seis meses y exámenes radiográficos simples e contrastados sin evidencia de megaesofago. La esofagografia fue repetida utilizando contraste de bario mezclado con un alimento comercial seco para perros, que permitió diagnosticar la distensión esofágica, confirmando asi el megaesofago. A pesar de ser una técnica poco utilizada, la misma resultó ser un método alternativo eficiente en el diagnóstico de megaesófago adquirido canino, principalmente cuando las otras técnicas radiográficas no son conclusivas.
