ABSTRACT: Arboviruses are agents transmitted by arthropods and represent a considerable threat to public health worldwide, causing diseases in humans and animals. A serological investigation was carried out to detect total antibodies against different types of arboviruses in free-living coatis (Nasua nasua) from the Iguaçu National Park (INP) through the Hemagglutination Inhibition test. Serum samples were tested using antigens from 33 arboviruses belonging to the genera Alphavirus, Flavivirus, Orthobunyavirus, and Phlebovirus. The data showed that 23.6% (17/72) of coatis were seropositive for at least one of the tested antigens, including monotypic and heterotypic reactions. Seropositivity was detected for Alphavirus (5.9%, 1/17; WEEV), Flavivirus (64.7%, 11/17; YFV, ILHV, SLEV, BSQV, ROCV, WNV, DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, DENV-4, and NJLV), Phlebovirus (88.2%, 15/17; ICOV and BUJV) and Orthobunyavirus (5.9%, 1/17; ORIV). The presence of antibodies to these viruses in coatis from INP indicated an apparent silent circulation of arbovirus, implying N. nasua to be a possible amplifying host of these arboviruses in the studied area. The data reported also serve as a warning about the possible risk of establishing an arbovirus transmission cycle involving vector arthropods and coatis, or even other wild animals, consequently, including humans in this transmission chain.

Raising backyard birds is a common practice in Brazil, mainly in the countryside or suburban areas. However, the level of respiratory pathogens in these animals is unknown. We sampled two hundred chickens from 19 backyard flocks near commercial poultry farms and performed ELISA to Infectious Bronchitis Virus, avian Metapneumovirus, Mycoplasma synoviae and Mycoplasma gallisepticum. We evaluated the association between the predictive ability of ELISA and Hemagglutination-inhibition (HI)by comparing results from eight flocks positive to Mycoplasma gallisepticum on ELISA. Besides, we assessed essential biosecurity measures in the properties (multiple species birds, rodent control, hygienic conditions, and water quality for the bird`s consumption). We could access the vaccination program only on four properties; in three of them, the birds were supposedly vaccinated for IBV. Overall the properties had a poor score for the biosecurity measures, and the seroprevalence in backyard poultry flocks for IBV, a MPV, MS, and MG were respectively 87.5% (14/16), 89.5% (17/19), 100 (19/19) and MG 84.21% (16/19). We found low specificity and predictive value between ELISA and HI in MG analysis and a positive correlation between the presence of clinical symptoms and mean MG titers. Backyard chicken are pathogens reservoirs and pose a risk for the commercial poultry farms in the region, and further efforts of the governmental entities and private sector of poultry production should consider these information to avoid future economic losses.(AU)

Although the natural reservoirs of the avian influenza (AI) virus have been extensively studied in many countries, there is a clear lack of information on this subject in South America, particularly in Brazil. The objective of this study was to conduct a serological survey for H5, H7 and H9 antibodies to AI-subtype viruses in wild birds in the state of São Paulo , Brazil. Serum samples were tested using the hemagglutination-inhibition assay. Out of the 31 wild birds sampled between January and December of 2006, seven (22.58%), were seropositive for H5, H7 and H9; four (12.90%) were seropositive for H5 and H7; 13 (41.94%), were seropositive only for H7; three (9.7%), were seropositive only for H9; and four (12.90%) were negative for all three hemagglutinin subtypes. These results indicate that AI viruses belonging to H5, H7 and H9 subtypes circulate among wild birds in the state of São Paulo in the form of either concurrent or consecutive infections. This study contributes to the knowledge of AI epidemiology in Brazil, and stresses the need of further detailed and long-term epidemiological and ecological investigation to determine the current status of this virus.

ABSTRACT The present study analyzed the occurrence of Newcastle disease in the commercial poultry population in all major regions of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The main objective was to investigate the impact of regional patterns of production on the epidemiology of the disease. The study was based on data collected from 797 diagnosis files of laboratory results of samples processed from 1988 up to 1998. The small number of cases of virus isolation encountered suggest that the incidence of Newcastle disease in Minas Gerais was very low over the period, although sporadic foci have occurred. The vaccination antibody titer responses were adequate and within the recommended standards. Some marked regional differences were found. In the region Triângulo Mineiro/Alto Paranaíba, Brazil, the incidence of HI titers indicative of contact with the virus was very low, confirming that vaccination is not carried out and natural challenge rarely occurs. Conversely, vaccination is a common practice in the other regions studied, but the incidence of contact with wild virus was significantly (p > 0.05) higher than in the former region. Vaccinated broilers HI antibody titers indicative of protection were found in adequate proportions

This study aimed to investigate the incidence of the influenza virus, and its interspecies transmission cycle among horses. A comparative serological survey was performed using horse sera following challenge with both specific (equine) and non-specific (human) influenza virus strains. Bleedings of the 22 horses were performed during the years 1999 and 2000. Following treatment with kaolin (20%), added in rooster erythrocytes suspension (50%), for removal of non-specific antibodies, sera were titered against both Human and Equine Influenza virus, by the Hemagglutination Inhibition Assay(HI), recommended by WHO. The HI results of horse serological responses demonstrate cross reaction between both the specific strain, A/Eq1 (H7N7) ( 62.75%) and A/Eq2 (H3N8) (60.65%), and the non- specific strains, type A (H1N1) (79.5%) and A (H3N2) (94.45%) and type B (77.75%). It was noteworthy the high percentage of protection responses in equine sera aginst the non-specific strains, as compared with the specific strains. This finding suggests direct interspecies transmission of influenza virus as zoonotic viruses, particulary for the type B strain which is considered restricted to humans. It was the first report, in Brazil. Further studies are required to achieve a complete understanding of the incidence of influenza in our environment. (AU)

(AU)

The presence of antibodies to the avian influenza virus subtypes H1N1 and H3N2, was studied through the technique of hemagglutination inhibition in the plasma of 225 birds of RIO-ZOO Foundation, Bwana Park and of small flocks of the Rio de Janeiro State. Among the studied birds, 60 (26.6%) were seropositives, being 22 (9.8%) for the subtype H1N1, 28 (12.4%) for the subtype H3N2 and 10 (4.4%) for both subtypes. These results indicate the occurrence of these avian influenza virus subtypes in Rio de Janeiro and point out the potential risk of their transmission for the industrial poultry and humans.
