ABSTRACT: We described a case of rhinitis case caused by Exserohilum rostratum in a 3-year-old, mixed breed, afemale goat, presenting with decreased appetite, dyspnea, and face deformity, with evolution of approximately 2 months. Necropsy revealed an extensive brownish yellow, irregular, ulcerated, and friable focal lesion in the nasal cavity. Purulent secretion drained from the lesion, affecting the nasal vestibule and extending the caudal portion of the dorsal concha, associated with nasal meatus obstruction, destruction of the nasal septum, and nasal bone palatine and vomer. Histologically, the lesion was characterized as rhinitis and pyogranulomatous and necrotizing osteomyelitis (multifocal to coalescent, sharp, and chronic) and associated with a myriad of fungal structures. Morphologically, the hyphae were characterized by thin, slightly tortuous, and rarely septate walls (2-6 μm diameter), multiple chains of individual conidia or in groups (8-10 μm diameter), and pigmented chlamydoconidia (7.5-15 μm diameter). They showed positive results for the special histochemical techniques such as Fontana Masson, methenamine silver nitrate by Grocott, and periodic acid by Schiff. E. rostratum was identified as the causative agent using microbiological isolation associated with molecular identification. Pyrogranulomatous rhinitis caused by E. rostratum in goats is unprecedented, being the first isolation of the agent in animals in Brazil and the first case of nasal phaeohyphomycosis in the goats.

This study aimed to quantify nasosinusal neoplasms diagnosed in dogs in 20 years (2000-2019) and characterize the main clinical, macroscopic, and histological aspects of these neoplasms. The sex, breed, age, skull conformation, the main clinical signs, and the anatomopathological characteristics (distribution, macroscopy, and histology) were computed. During this period, 49 dogs were affected by neoplasms in these regions, totaling 50 neoplasms (one dog had two neoplasms of different locations and histogenetic origins). Similar amounts of mixed-breed dogs (25/49) and purebred dogs (24/49) were affected, these distributed in 16 breeds. Among purebreds, it was noted that dogs with mesocephalic cranial conformation (12/24) were the most affected, followed by dolichocephalic (10/24) and brachycephalic (2/24). There were 22 cases in males and 27 in females, making a proportion of 1:1.23. There was an age variation from 11 months to 16 years old. The epithelial neoplasms have occurred in older dogs compared to those of other histogenic origins (mesenchymal and other origins/round cells). The main clinical signs were similar between the histogenetic categories, related to the involvement of the upper respiratory tract, sometimes accompanied by nervous signs (when there was brain invasion of nasal neoplasms or vice versa). The possible origin site was mostly in the nasal cavity concerning the paranasal sinuses (and other locations). Invasions occurred in different tissues adjacent to the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, resulting in cranial and facial deformities (21/49). The frequency was 48% of epithelial neoplasms, 32% of mesenchymal neoplasms, and 10% of neoplasms with other origins and round cells. The neoplasms most frequently observed, in decreasing order of frequency, were: adenocarcinoma (9/50), squamous cell carcinoma (9/50), transmissible venereal tumor (5/50), osteosarcoma (5/50), chondrosarcoma (4/50), and undifferentiated sarcoma (4/50). Through this study, it was possible to establish the frequency of these neoplasms in 20 years and their clinical, macroscopic, and histological characteristics.(AU)

Background: Osteosarcomas are common malignant bone tumors described in dogs, humans and cats. However, thereare rare reports in horses. The tumor etiology has not been fully elucidated. Clinical signs are associated to the tumorsize, location and growth characteristics. When located on the face, the most common findings are facial distortion, nasaldischarge and inspiratory dyspnea. The aim of this study was to report an osteoblastic osteosarcoma in a horse, located onthe right maxillary region with projections into the corresponding nostril.Case: A 6-year-old mixbreed saddle gelding, presenting bay coat was admitted to a University Hospital with a chronicsinusitis history. The animal was previously examined and treated by other veterinarians, who suspected of odontogenicmaxillary sinusitis, and therefore a repulsion of the fourth premolar from the right maxilla hemiarcade was performed. However, an improvement of the clinical signs was not observed and subsequently the gelding was referred to a VeterinaryHospital. During physical examination the patient presented dyspnea, tachypnea and tachycardia. An increase on the facesize was observed, together with a fetid and purulent nasal discharge. During oral cavity inspection, a diagonal wear wasdetected at the occlusal surface of the right hemiarcade; food accumulation was seen at the dental extraction site, and acommunication with the rostral maxillary sinus was evidenced, from where a purulent fetid discharge was draining. At theradiographic exam, well defined margins of a tumor were observed, with adjacent bone lysis and the presence of a centralnucleus showing a gross granular mineral radiopacity, distorting the frontal and nasal bones. During the endoscopic exam,a mass partially occluding the right nasal cavity close to the nasal opening was seen, which was blocking the progressionof the endoscopy. However, during the left cavity inspection, at the end of the nasal septum a mass...

This is a case report of leishmaniasis with granulomatous rhinitis in a 2-year-old domestic cat. Clinically, an obstruction in the right nostril was observed, with cytopathological examination positive for Leishmania sp. Euthanasia was performed, and multinodular, diffuse and smooth pinkish lesions were observed in the mucosa of the nasal cavity. Microscopically, nodular lesions corresponded to an intense granulomatous inflammation with macrophages containing large numbers of Leishmania sp. amastigotes. Macrophages containing amastigotes were also occasionally observed in the popliteal lymph node, skin, and spleen. Based on immunohistochemistry, amastigotes were confirmed as Leishmania sp. and Leishmania sp. DNA was also detected by qPCR in lymph nodes samples. Although it is an uncommon manifestation, leishmaniasis should be considered as a differential diagnosis in diseases affecting the nasal cavity in domestic felines.

From January 2011 to December 2014 were diagnosed 9 outbreaks of Oestrus ovis infection in small ruminants (Outbreaks A-I) in the State of Bahia. The incidence of oestrosis in sheep in outbreak A was 0.5% (1/200), in B 2.2% (2/90), in C 0.8% (1/120), in D 2% (2/100), in E 1% (1/100), in F 3% (1/33), in G 0.6% (1/150), in H 2.5% (5/200), and in I 11.42% (8/70), and 5% (2/40) in goats. Clinical signs associated with parasitism were wheezing, sneezing followed by catarrhal nasal secretion, some restlessness, excessive head movement and walking in circles. The breasts and turbinates were hyperemic, with mucosal edema and presence of O. ovis larvae. All larvae collected from the turbinates ranged from the first to the third stage of development. Some L3 larvae collected at necropsy were incubated and the gray colored Imago with dark abdomen obtained from the pupae measured about 10mm. A descriptive analysis of the climatic conditions was carried out; in the year of investigation the incidence of O. ovis infection has grown (p<0.001), and the lowest mean minimum temperature (p<0.001) caused the development the O. ovis fly, so that there was an introduction of an increased number of these flies into the sheep and goat flocks in state of Bahia with the ideal climatic conditions for their perpetuation.(AU)

The occurrence of nasosinusal neoplasms in dogs is considered to be very low, therefore studies related to these neoplasms are scarce. They can be either benign or malignant neoplasms, however most of them are classified as malignant. Due to the anatomical and histological characteristics of the nasal cavity and sinuses, neoplasms of different histological origins may arise, due to their diversity of epithelia that line these cavities and the presence of adjacent bone and cartilaginous structures. This study aimed to carry out a retrospective survey from 2000 to 2019, counting for all cases of nasosinusal neoplasms in dogs in that period, among all cases of biopsies and necropsies in this species. The sex, breed, age, skull conformation, the main clinical signs and the anatomopathological characteristics (distribution, macroscopy and histology) were also computed. During this period, 49 dogs were affected by neoplasms in these regions, totaling 50 neoplasms (one dog had two neoplasms of different location and histogenetic origins). Similar amounts of mixed breed dogs (25/49) and defined breed dogs (24/49) were affected, these distributed in 16 breeds. Among dogs with defined breed, it was noted that dogs with mesocephalic cranial conformation (12/24) were the most affected, followed by dolichocephalic (10/24) and brachycephalic (2/24). There were 22 cases in males and 27 in females, making a proportion of 1:1.23. There was an age variation from 11 months to 16 years; the epithelial neoplasms having occurred in older dogs when compared to those of other histogenic origins (mesenchymal and other origins/round cells). The main clinical signs were similar between the histogenetic categories, being related to the involvement of the upper respiratory tract, sometimes accompanied by nervous signs (when there was brain invasion of nasal neoplasms or vice versa). The possible origin site was mostly in the nasal cavity in relation to the paranasal sinuses (and other locations). Invasions occurred in different tissues adjacent to the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, resulting in cranial and facial deformities (21/49). The frequency was 48% of epithelial neoplasms, 32% of mesenchymal neoplasms and 10% of neoplasms with other origins and round cells. The neoplasms most frequently observed, in decreasing order of frequency, were: adenocarcinoma (9/50), squamous cell carcinoma (9/50), transmissible venereal tumor (5/50), osteosarcoma (5/50), chondrosarcoma (4/50) and undifferentiated sarcoma (4/50). Through this study it was possible to establish the frequency of these neoplasms in 20 years, as well as their clinical, macroscopic and histological characteristics.

Nasal cavity diseases that affect small ruminants can cause losses to sheep and goat herds in Central Brazil. A retrospective study of the University of Brasilia´s Veterinary Pathology Laboratory autopsy reports from 2003 to 2014 was conducted to verify the occurrence of small ruminants nasal cavity diseases. Six necropsied sheep (6/463 1.29%) showed mycotic or oomicotic granulomatous rhinitis and 22 animals (22/538, 4.08%) presented oestrosis diagnosis, affecting 86.36% of sheep and 13.64% of goats. The pyogranulomatous rhinitis in sheep occurred in flooded areas with abundant plant material decomposing. Rhinofacial pythiosis infection in animals showed as major changes swelling in the nasal region due to extensive granulomatous lesions associated with tissue necrosis, characterized by numerous macrophages and polymorphonuclear cells surrounding necrotic centers containing the agent surrounded by Splendore-Hoeppli reaction. Sheep with conidiobolomycosis showed extensive areas of necrosis and pyogranulomatous inflammation associated with fungal hyphae, localized in the nasopharynx and also in peribulbar region and exophthalmia. Most animals with oestrosis showed no significant clinical and pathological changes, even with the presence of larvae mainly in the sinuses and nasal turbinates, trachea and paranasal sinus. The importance of such diseases is still unknown in the region, and the knowledge of the clinical-pathological and epidemiological conditions is of great relevance for the diagnosis, control and prevention to avoid the expansion and losses to livestock.(AU)

A 16-year-old Quarter Horse was admitted to the Veterinary Hospital after recurrent epistaxis episodes. Dyspnea and intolerance to exercise were noticed. An irregular multinodular mass was observed in the mucosa of the rostral nasal cavity, causing partial stenosis of the anterior airways. To improve the respiratory condition of the animal, most of the mass was surgically removed. Histologic examination revealed eosinophilic hyaline material in the lamina propria, walls of submucosal lymphatic and blood vessels, and basement membrane of mucosal glands of the nasal cavity. This material stained orange-red with Congo-red, with the characteristic green birefringence under polarizing light, confirming the amyloid diagnosis. Giant cells and mononuclear cell infiltrate were also observed. One year after the partial removal of the lesion, the horse had only mild respiratory signs.(AU)

Background: Chondrosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm originated from chondroid cells with production of cartilage matrix with lot of degrees of differentiation. It may be found in skeletal or extraskeletal tissue, more commonly in flat bones. It most often has an aggressive behavior with involvement of bone and adjacent soft tissues, which necessitates their rapid identification, surgical intervention and therapy. Chondrosarcoma is reported as uncommon neoplasm in the nasal cavity of dogs and should be distinguished by both other malignancies and for non-neoplastic diseases. Case: A 7-years-old dog, mixed breed, male, had a swelling in the nasal cavity for more than 30 days. The change was seen in the right frontal-nasal region with invasion of the oral cavity, with serous nasal discharge and also, inspiratory and expiratory noises. Even after cytology and biopsy of the tumor to chemotherapy instituted, there was not successful and the dog was euthanized. At necropsy, there was a large multilobulated mass, with firm consistency, interspersed with soft areas in the right nasal region. In the cut surface, the mass showed staining grayish-white interspersed with dark areas, which block most of the nasal cavity causing partial lysis of frontal, temporal and tubinates bones, as well as purulent secretion of the frontal sinuses (sinusitis). Microscopically, the mass consisted of mesenchymal neoplastic cells arranged in bundles or nodules without orientation, separated by fine bands of fibrous connective tissue poorly vascularized. The neoplastic cells showed round to oval nucleus, sparse chromatin and conspicuous nucleoli. Some areas were more solid and composed of cells with few cytoplasm, similar to chondroblastic cells. It was observed multifocal areas of chondroid matrix formation. Discussion: Based on pathological findings, the diagnosis of chondrosarcoma was confirmed. The histopathological findings confirmed the diagnosis of chondrosarcoma suggested by cytology. Despite being an uncommon neoplasm in dogs, chondrosarcoma should be considered as differential diagnosis of other nasal diseases that can lead macroscopic changes and similar clinical signs. The osteosarcoma is the most common bone tumor of the nasal cavity in dogs. The similarity of the macroscopic findings of chondrosarcoma and oesteosarcoma, as well as histological and immunohistochemical stain, may be a challenge to diagnosis for the clinician and pathologist. Other neoplasms such as squamous cell carcinoma, fibrosarcoma and hemangiosarcoma, as well as proliferative rhinitis caused by fungal agents, should also be considered in the differential diagnosis. These conditions can be differentiated by microscopic features and immunohistochemical stain. The fine needle aspiration biopsy is an important method, however to establish the definitive diagnosis is always required histopathologic evaluation. In primary chondrosarcoma of the nasal cavity in dogs, the survival with treatment is made from three to six months, however, often results in local severe invasion and serious clinical changes. In this case, the treatment was not effective because the degree of tumor differentiation and infiltration of the surrounding structures, as well as worsens of the clinical signs. The knowledge of the clinicopathological findings and biology of this tumor is essential for rapid diagnosis and more effective clinical interventions.

Background: Wry Nose (Campylorrhinus lateralis) is a congenital shortening and deviation of the maxillae, premaxillae, nasal bones, vomer, and nasal septum that affects mainly foals. Intrauterine positioning as an etiology of this deformity is highly unlikely. Clinically, varying degree of premaxillar deviation is noticeable upon inspection of the foal's head. The deviation usually results in malocclusion, with no contact between the incisors of the mandible and maxilla. Some foals experience breathing difficulties or have increased respiratory sounds. This condition will not self-correct, and a decision should be made to treat the foal using reconstructive techniques or to euthanize it to prevent it from suffering. The objective of this work was to describe a case of wry nose in an adult male equine. Case: A 4-year-old, 300 kg, male SRD equine was submitted for necropsy. There was no history of respiratory problems and trouble with mastication or prehension of food. Three days before death the horse showed clinical sings characterized by no ingestion of food and water, changing behavior and locomotion, weakness, and not respond to calls, seemingly oblivious to the environment evolving into permanent recumbency and death after about 24 h of the decline. The horse was treated by a veterinarian who suspected of leucoencephalomalacea. The animal died 24 h after her condition worsened. Macroscopically, the main lesion observed was in the nose. The nasal septum was deviated to the left with the sigmoid appearance and a dorsal hump on the right side of the nasal bone. The radiographs of dorsoventral view of the jaws showing premaxillae deviated approximately 90 degrees to the left. The left premaxillae was shorter than the right premaxilla, thus creating a lesser and greater curvature of the premaxilla. Macroscopic and Microscopic lesions in the brain were not observed discarding the possibility of leucoencephalomalacea and other neurological diseases of infectious origin. Discussion: Wry nose is a relatively rare disease and have being reported in foals. In our study, it was not possible to determine the cause of this abnormality, but a computed tomography study has been associated this deformity with an underdeveloped pregnant uterus during the second half of pregnancy witch the narrow tip of the uterine horns provides only limited space for the developing cranial half of the fetus. Although the disease have been reported in young animals in which the surgical procedure in moderate to severe cases it is recommended, in the present case, the equine was four years old indicating that there is a possibility of the animal to reach adulthood, but with their commitment to quality of life. Several diseases, such as cystic degeneration, malformation of normal tissue, abscesses, fractures and neoplasms may cause thickening, malformation or deviation of the nasal septum in horse producing similar clinical sings. In the present case, the macroscopic lesions and radiography exam were useful to determinate the exact site, extent and nature of the involvement of the lesion. Despite the owner to report a clinical picture indicative of neurological disease, histological analysis of the brain ruled out this possibility. These findings indicate that wry nose disease should be kept in mind when investigating causes of deviation of the nasal septum in equines.

Canine rinopathies are common afections in veterinary atendance and for having inespecifics signs is required the use of diagnostic imaging tools that help in diagnostic conclusion. Aimed to analyse trhough radiology and rhinoscopy nasal cavities of 10 dogs with diferent ages, gender, weight and breed afectted by nasal disorders and relationate images findings to clinical signs and define their respectives diagnosis by mean of histopatologic exams. From tem dogs studied, six were males and four females, 30%of these patients were presumptively diagnosed by radiografhy and rhinoscophy analisis to be bearers of lymphoplasmocytic rhinitis, chronic and hyperplastic rhinitis, 30% with nasal neoformation na 10% of foreign bodies. There has been a high convergence of between radiographic findings and visible signs by rinoscopy with the presumptive diagnosis. The radiographic interpretation diagnosis was positively confirmed by means of histopatology in 90% of cases and rhinoscopy in 90% of clincal signs visibilizated during the technique. The detailed inspection of the nasal cavity internal portions was detected by rhinoscopy and the characteristics lesions as well as their surrounding areas were more precisely defined in the radiographic examination. The obtained results with this study lead to conclusion that the diagnosis of dogs rhinities should been undertaken making use of both imaging modalities. However, the definitive diagnosis must be concluded trhough histopatology, despite of the high convergence between of radiographic examination and rhinoscopy with histopalogy, how has been defined in this study.
