This study aimed to investigate the climatological impacts of air temperature, sunshine duration, and rain precipitation, in a moderate climate, on the reproductive performance of Romanov sheep in the continental part of Croatia, during two consecutive years (2019-2020). Our study included 549 matings with 520 successful conceptions at 5 Romanov sheep farms, and the fertility rate was 94.72%. The percentage of lambs delivered in winter was 53.27% (n = 277), in spring 20.19% (n = 105), in summer 14.23% (n = 74) and 12.31% in autumn (n = 64). According to percentile ranks and classification ratings, thermal conditions have been described as very warm (during 2019-2020), while precipitation conditions, expressed in percentiles, were wet (during 2019) but dry (during 2020) for this region. The peak of sexual activity was from mid-August until October in 2019 and from the end of August to November in 2020 for Romanov sheep in northwestern (NW) Croatia. A Kruskal-Wallis test showed a statistically significant difference in the number of pregnant ewes during the different mating seasons in the year (p < 0.001). Therefore, we can assume that air temperature, precipitation volume, and sunshine duration during the different seasons could impact the reproductive performance of Romanov sheep in a moderate climate.(AU)

Mossoró, RN, Brazil, is considered one of the fruit growing centers of the Northeast region. This municipality has a persistent water deficit, with the need to develop irrigated agriculture with efficient water use and rational management of irrigation. The objective of this study was to evaluate estimation methods of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) for different climate conditions of Mossoró, comparing them with the standard Penman-Monteith-FAO 56 method. A daily data series of two distinct years, a rainy (2011) and a dry year (2012), was used. The data were obtained from the weather station of the Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid Region (UFERSA). An analysis was performed to identify methods that best fit those of Penman-Monteith-FAO 56, and for this, ten methods were evaluated using statistical indices. The Penman-Original, Radiation-Temperature, and Hargreaves-Original methods stood out and satisfactorily met ETo estimation for the rainy season, while the Jensen-Haise, Radiation-Temperature, and Hargreaves-Original methods achieved satisfactory performance for the dry season. The Hargreaves-Samani method did not demonstrate viability in the use of ETo estimation, as it was the worst method in both studied periods and is not recommended for irrigation management.
O município de Mossoró-RN é considerado uns dos polos fruticultores da região Nordeste. O município apresenta constante déficit hídrico, sendo necessário o desenvolvimento da agricultura irrigada com o uso eficiente da água, sendo fundamental o manejo racional da irrigação. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar para as condições climáticas de Mossoró-RN, diferentes métodos de estimativa da evapotranspiração de referência (ETo), comparando-os com o método padrão de Penman-Monteith-FAO 56. The objective of this research was to evaluate the behavior of twenty buffalo heifers reared during the dry season on Marajó Island, Pará, Brazil. The animals were distributed into two groups, those with shade (WS) and those without shade (WOS). The experimental day was divided into six shifts: morning (6:00 to 9:55 a.m.), intermediate (10:00 a.m. to 1:55 p.m.), afternoon (2:00 to 5:55 p.m.), evening (6:00 to 9:55 p.m.), night (10:00 p.m. to 1:55 a.m.), and early morning (2:00 to 5:55 a.m.). The WS group was kept in silvipastoral system paddocks, while the WOS group was kept in unshaded paddocks. Climatic data were registered and temperature and humidity index (THI) were calculated. Behavior data such as grazing, rumination, idle time, and other activities (walking, defecating, mounting, drinking water, urinating, eating salt) were evaluated. The results showed that the THI was higher in the WOS group. Grazing time was higher in the WOS group than in the WS group in the intermediate shift (p < 0.05), while in the afternoon, evening, and early morning shifts, the WS group spent more time grazing than the WOS group. In the intermediate and early morning shifts, the WS group spent more time ruminating (p < 0.05); the WS group ruminated more than the WOS group. The WOS group had more idle time, especially in the evening and early morning shifts (p < 0.05), while the WS group had more idle time in the intermediate shift (p < 0.05). We conclude that buffaloes graze and ruminate more intensely when they are reared in a shaded system on the island of Marajó.(AU)

The study of monthly rainfall probabilities is of great importance due to the increasing occurrences of extreme events in different regions of Brazil. However, the rainfall distribution at the southwest region of Paraná State, Brazil, is still unknown. Thus, the aim of this work is to assess the probabilistic distribution of rainfall frequency at Dois Vizinhos, in the southwest of Paraná State, Brazil. A probabilistic analysis was performed using a historic 40-year rainfall dataset (1973-2012). The gamma, Weibull, normal log, and normal probability distributions were compared. The distribution adherence was performed through Akaike Information Criterion, and the R statistical software was used for estimation. The results showed that the gamma and Weibull distributions were most suitable for probabilistic fitting. Based on this, the average annual rainfall for Dois Vizinhos (PR) was found to be 2,010.6 mm. Moreover, we found that throughout the year, October has the highest rainfall occurrence probability, with an 86% rainfall probability of above 150 mm and 64% rainfall probability above 200 mm.
O estudo de probabilidades mensais de precipitação pluvial torna-se importante em virtude do aumento de ocorrências de eventos extremos em diversas regiões do país. Entretanto, poucas informações são conhecidas a respeito da distribuição de chuva na região do sudoeste do Paraná. Com base no exposto objetivou-se por meio desta pesquisa analisar a distribuição probabilística mensal da precipitação pluvial na região de Dois Vizinhos, sudoeste do estado do Paraná. Analisou-se a série histórica de precipitação pluvial de 40 anos (1973-2012). Foram comparadas as seguintes distribuições de probabilidade: gama, Weibull, log normal e normal. A aderência das distribuições aos dados pluviométricos da região foi verificada através do critério de Akaike (AIC). As análises foram realizadas utilizando o software estatístico R. Por meio dos resultados observou-se que as distribuições de gama e Weibull foram as mais adequadas em termos de ajustes probabilísticos. Com base nas distribuições, a média anual de chuva na região de Dois Vizinhos é de 2.010,6 mm e o mês de outubro registra a maior probabilidade de ocorrência de precipitação, sendo 86% de probabilidade de chuvas acima de 150 mm e 64% acima de 200 mm.

Adaptative traits (rectal temperature-RT, respiratory rate-RR) and grazing behavior (Grazing, Ruminating and Rest time, and Sun or Shade time) of Bonsmara-Hereford crossbred-BH, n = 15, and purebred Hereford-HH, n = 18, yearling heifers, in a grazing system of Uruguay. Environment characterization was made using THIadjusted by radiation and wind speed (no, mild, and severe heat weaves), and the comprehensive climatic index-CCI (no, middle, moderate and severe stress). Adaptative traits were measured twice a day, weekly, in two consecutive days in summer and winter at 08h00 and 16h00. Grazing behavior was observed from 07h00 to 21h00 each 600 s twice in summer. The records were analyzed using a mixed model. Significant effect of genotype was observed in mild heat waves for RR and RT in the afternoon (BH lower than HH). For CCI in a.m., the RR was lower than HH in BH in severe stress, while in p.m., the RR was lower in all of CCI levels. RT in p.m. in moderate and severe was lower in BH than in HH. In winter, no differences were found. In grazing behavior, HH rests longer than BH doe; also, HH spends more time in the shade (34 %) than BH does (22 %). BH genotype showed better thermoregulation and grazing behavior at higher temperatures compared to HH.(AU)

Multidisciplinary studies have been developed seeking the deepening the needs and possibilities already available about these new systems. With this, this review seeks to approach in a didactic and simplified way the planning and construction of aviary sheds aiming to provide an suitable thermal conditioning for broiler accommodation.(AU)

Subsequently, the following indices were calculated: Temperature and Humidity Index (THI),Global Temperature and Humidity Index (GTHI), Benezras Thermal Comfort Index (BTCI), IbériasHeat Tolerance Index (IHTI), the general, effective, and practical Buffalo Comfort Climatic ConditionsIndices (BCCCIg, BCCCIe, and BCCCIp, respectively) and the general, effective, and practical BuffaloEnvironmental Comfort Indices (BECIg, BECIe, and BECIp, respectively) in the morning and afternoon.Higher values for THI, GTHI, RT, BST, RR, BTCI, BCCCIg, BCCCIe, BCCCIp, BECIg, BECIe, andBECIp were observed in the afternoon, and the highest IHTI values were found in the morning. A positivecorrelation was found among the physiological variables and THI, GTHI, BTCI, BCCCIg, BECIg,BCCCIe, BECIe, BCCCIp, BECIp, while a negative correlation was found for RT and BST with IHTI. Theindices THI, GTHI, BCCCIg, BECIg, BCCCIe, BECIe, BCCCIp, and BECIp were determined to be veryefficient to assess the thermal comfort status of buffaloes under the conditions of the present research.(AU)

Foram registradosdados de variáveis climáticas e temperatura retal (TR), temperatura da superfície corporal (TSC) efrequência respiratória (FR), e foram calculados os índices: Índice de Temperatura e Umidade (ITU),Índice de Temperatura de Globo e Umidade (ITGU), Índice de Conforto Térmico de Benezra (ICB),Índice de Tolerância ao Calor de Ibéria (ITCI), Índice de Condições Climáticas de Conforto para búfalosgeral (BCCCIg), efetivo (BCCCIe) e prático (BCCCIp) e Índice de Conforto Ambiental para búfalos geral(BECIg), efetivo (BECIe) e prático (BECIp), nos períodos da manhã e da tarde. Foram observados valoresde ITU, ITGU, TR, TSC, FR, ICB, BCCCIg, BCCCIe, BCCCIp, BECIg, BECIe e BECIp mais elevados à tarde. Os maiores valores de ITCI foram encontrados de manhã. Houve correlação positiva entre as variáveis fisiológicas e ITU, ITGU, ITCI, BCCCIg, BECIg, BCCCIe, BECIg, BCCCIe, BECIp, enquanto uma correlação negativa foi encontrada para TR e TSC com ITCI. The objective of this study was evaluated the thermal comfort indexes and physiological parameters in Santa Inês and crossbreed ewes in Brazilian semiarid. The research was developed at experimental station Benjamin Maranhão, twenty non pregnant female sheep were used, 10 pure and 10 crossbreed (½ Dorper + ½ Santa Inês), averaging 26.7 ± 2.1 kg and with 150 days of age at the beginning of the study and confined in a covered sheepfold. A completely randomized design in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme (two genotypes and two shifts) with four treatments and five repetitions was used. The interior and exterior thermal comfort indexes were, most of the day, above the thermal comfort zone for sheep. The rectal temperature, superficial temperature, respiratory rate and cardiac rate was more elevated in the afternoon, and the Santa Inês animals showed in the mornings low rectal temperature values, as well as superficial temperature, respiratory and cardiac rate when compared to the crossbreed.(AU)

The research was developed at experimental station Benjamin Maranhão, twenty non pregnant female sheep were used, 10 pure and 10 crossbreed (½ Dorper + ½ Santa Inês), averaging 26.7 ± 2.1 kg and with 150 days of age at the beginning of the study and confined in a covered sheepfold. A completely randomized design in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme (two genotypes and two shifts) with four treatments and five repetitions was used. The interior and exterior thermal comfort indexes were, most of the day, above the thermal comfort zone for sheep. The rectal temperature, superficial temperature, respiratory rate and cardiac rate was more elevated in the afternoon, and the Santa Inês animals showed in the mornings low rectal temperature values, as well as superficial temperature, respiratory and cardiac rate when compared to the crossbreed.

This paper aimed to evaluate the surface temperatures of buffalo bulls using infrared thermography, considering four distinct anatomical parts over time, and to correlate surface temperatures and thermal comfort indexes. The humid tropical climate (Kõppen's Afi) was predominant in the research station where the experiment was performed and the trial lasted from April to August. Ten bulls (n=10) were evaluated every 25 days (morning: 6:00-9:00; afternoon: 12:00-15:00) and the parameters assessed were respiratory rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT), and the thermograms of surface temperature for orbital area (ORB), right flank (RF), left flank (LF) and scrotum (SCR). Climatological data was continuously monitored and the Temperature and Humidity Index (THI) and the Index of Comfort of Benezra (ICB) were calculated. The average values of THI were ≥78, and significant differences between shifts were observed (P<0.05). The ICB ranged from 1.96 to 2.25 and significant differences were observed for shifts and throughout the months (P<0.05). The averages of surface temperatures were RT=38.2±0.5°C, ORB=36.1±0.8°C, LF=33.5±2.5°C, RF=35.4±1.7ºC and SCR=33.3±1.1°C, which exhibited significant differences for shifts and throughout the months (P<0.05). Positive correlations were obtained between THI and ORB (0.72), RF (0.77), LF (0.75) and SCR (0.41) (P<0.0001). The maximum temperature of ORB showed the highest correlation with RT (0.58, P<0.0001). Therefore, the surface temperatures are subject to climatic variations and increase throughout the day, due to the variation in thermal comfort indexes, and the maximum ORB temperature was the parameter most related to rectal temperature. Lastly, the results indicate that IRT may be a useful non-invasive and accurate tool to detect the variations in ORB, LF, RF and SCR temperature in buffalo bulls.(AU)
O presente trabalho visou avaliar as temperaturas superficiais de diferentes regiões anatômicas de búfalos ao longo do tempo, por meio da termografia infravermelha, e correlacioná-las a índices bioclimatológicos de conforto térmico. O ensaio foi realizado em região de clima tropical úmido (Afi de Kõppen), de abril a agosto. Dez touros (n=10) foram avaliados a cada 25 dias (manhã: seis-nove horas; tarde: 12-15h), quanto à frequência respiratória (FR), temperatura retal (TR) e imagens termográficas da órbita ocular (ORB), flanco direito (FLd), flanco esquerdo (FLe) e escroto (ESC). Os dados climatológicos foram ininterruptamente monitorados, e calculados o índice de temperatura e umidade (ITU) e o índice de conforto de Benezra (ICB). O ITU foi ≥78, com diferença entre turnos (P<0,05). Já o ICB variou de 1,96 a 2,25 e apresentou diferenças ao longo dos meses e entre turnos (P<0,05). As temperaturas observadas foram de TR=38,2±0,5ºC, ORB=36,1±0,8ºC, FLd=33,5±2,5ºC, FLe=35,4±1,7ºC e ESC=33,3±1,1ºC, as quais variaram significativamente ao longo dos meses e entre turnos (P<0,05). O ITU apresentou correlações positivas com ORB (0,72), FLd (0,77), FLe (0,75) e ESC (0,41) (P<0,0001). A temperatura máxima de ORB apresentou a maior correlação com a TR (0,58; P<0,0001). Portanto, as temperaturas superficiais dos animais sofrem interferências das variações climáticas e se elevam ao longo do dia, devido à variação nos índices de conforto térmico; a temperatura máxima de ORB foi o parâmetro mais condicionado à temperatura retal. Também, as oscilações de temperatura de superfície de ORB, FLd, FLe e ESC podem ser aferidas em bubalinos com o uso da termografia infravermelha, de modo preciso e não invasivo.(AU)

Neste estudo foi avaliado o perfil metabólico de vacas leiteiras no período de transição durante o verão e o inverno. Foram utilizados 31 animais pluríparos mestiços girolando em cada estação, totalizando 62 vacas. No verão permaneciam em pasto com suplementação de silagem de milho e concentrado. No inverno, a exigência nutricional era suprida apenas com silagem de milho e concentrado. Foram feitas um total de 11 coletas de sangue de cada animal segundo o seguinte protocolo: quatro coletas pré-parto espaçadas semanalmente, no dia do parto e com 2, 5, 10, 15, 21 e 30 dias pós-parto. Foram avaliadas as concentrações de cálcio, fósforo e magnésio. Todos os analitos variaram em função do estatus fisiológico. As concentrações médias de cálcio e magnésio foram maiores no verão do que no inverno. Em ambas as estações, as menores concentrações médias de cálcio ocorreram próximas ao parto, sendo que 75% dos animais no inverno e 35,48% dos animais no verão estavam hipocalcêmicos. Apenas no décimo dia as concentrações de cálcio voltaram aos níveis do pré-parto, demonstrando que esse tempo é necessário para a adaptação da nova condição de lactante. As concentrações de magnésio foram menores no pós-parto do que no pré-parto nas duas estações, demonstrando a necessidade desse mineral para a produção de leite. As concentrações médias de magnésio permaneceram sempre dentro dos valores de referência, porém 19% dos animais aos dois dias pós-parto no inverno e 7% dos animais aos 10 dias pós-parto no verão tinham concentrações inferiores a esses limites. As concentrações de fósforo sofreram grande variação ao longo do peri-parto, porém sempre em níveis elevados, sendo que 49,8% dos animais no inverno e 37,3% no verão tinham níveis de fósforo acima dos valores de referência.(AU)
The metabolic profile of dairy cows in the transition period during summer and winter was evaluated. Were used 31 crossbred Holstein/Gir cows at each season, totaling 62 cows. During summer they remained in pasture with supplementation of corn silage and concentrate and in the winter, corn silage and concentrate was offered to furnish the nutritional requirements. A total of 11 blood samples from each animal were taken according to the following protocol: four collections weekly antepartum, at birth and at 2, 5, 10, 15, 21 and 30 days postpartum. Concentrations of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium were evaluated. All analytes varied according to the physiological status. The average concentrations of calcium and magnesium were higher in summer than in winter. In both seasons, the lowest mean calcium concentrations occurred near calving, and 75% of the animals in winter and 35.48% of the animals in the summer were hypocalcemic. Only on the tenth day postpartum, the calcium concentrations returned to levels of prepartum, demonstrating that this time is necessary for the adaptation of the new condition of lactating. Magnesium concentrations were lower postpartum than prepartum in both seasons, demonstrating the need for this mineral for the production of milk. The average concentrations of magnesium remained always within the reference values for the species, but 19% of the animals at two days postpartum in winter and 7% of the animals at 10 days postpartum in summer had concentrations below these limits. Phosphorus concentrations suffered large variation along the peri-partum, but always at high levels, with 49.8% of the animals in winter and 37.3% in summer had phosphorus levels above the reference range of the species.(AU)

The study aimed to assess the environmental parameters and physiological parameters and Saanen goats and Marota in Teresina, Piauí State, Brazil, in the rainy and dry periods during the months from april to november. We used adult female Saanen goats (n = 7) and Marota (n = 7), clinically healthy, the same age group and subject to the same management conditions. The physiological indices were heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR) and rectal temperature (RT) in schedules 7-8, 10-11, 14-15 and 1718 hours. The environmental indices analyzed were room temperature, relative humidity, black globe temperature index and temperature and humidity index. The results of the environmental parameters show that the dry period is more stressful than the rainy and the afternoon shift is more stressful than the morning and among these parameters, it is observed that the relative humidity has the opposite behavior of the temperature air, temperature and black globe temperature and humidity index, showing higher values in the rainy season and in the morning shift. Regarding the physiological parameters of the animals, it was observed that all animals were able to maintain rectal temperature within normal limits and the respiratory rate was the most sensitive indicator of stress, showing that the animals Marota race had lower values and more close to normal, indicating greater adaptability(AU)
Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar os parâmetros ambientais e os parâmetros e fisiológicos dos caprinos Saanen e Marota na cidade de Teresina, estado do Piauí, Brasil, nos períodos chuvosos e secos, durante os meses de abril a novembro. Utilizaram-se fêmeas caprinas adultas Saanen (n=7) e Marota (n=7), clinicamente saudáveis, de mesmas faixas etárias e submetidas às mesmas condições de manejo. Os índices fisiológicos foram a frequência cardíaca (FC), frequência respiratória (FR) e temperatura retal (TR) nos horários de 7-8, 10-11, 14-15 e 17-18horas. Os índices ambientais analisados foram a temperatura ambiente, umidade relativa do ar,temperatura de globo negro e índices de temperatura e umidade. Os resultados dos parâmetros ambientais mostram que o período seco é mais estressante que o chuvoso e que o turno da tarde é mais estressante que o da manhã e, dentre os esses parâmetros, observa-se que a umidade relativa do ar tem comportamento inverso ao da temperatura do ar, temperatura de globo negro e índices de temperatura e umidade, mostrando maiores valores no período chuvoso e no turno da manhã. Quanto aos parâmetros fisiológicos dos animais, observou-se que todos os animais conseguiram manter a temperatura retal dentro dos limites normais, e que a frequência respiratória foi o indicador de estresse mais sensível, mostrando que os animais da raça Marota(AU)

As alterações anatômicas do aparelho reprodutor masculino de ovinos são pouco relatadas, especialmente a condição de bipartição escrotal. Devido à importância do esclarecimento sobre esta alteração anatômica, objetivou-se relatar o caso de um ovino da raça Morada Nova que apresentava bipartição escrotal associada à má formação prepucial. Observou-se que essa alteração pode ocorrer como condição de adaptabilidade a climas tropicais.(AU)
The anatomical changes in the male reproductive system of sheep are rarely described, especially the scrotal bipartition condition. Due to the importance of clarification of this anatomical change, we aimed to describe a case of a Morada Nova sheep that had scrotal bipartition associated with preputial malformation. Com o intuito de verificar a influência de diferentes condições meteorológicas na sanidade de bovinos, foi realizado citologia de lavados traqueobrônquicos obtidos por traqueocentese e leucograma sanguíneo de cinco bezerros em situações de extremos de temperatura ambiental, sendo T1 = T (temperatura ambiental) de 5oC e UR (umidade relativa do ar) 93%; T2 = temperatura controle de T 22oC e UR 80%; e T3 = T 30oC e UR 41%. Pode-se observar que a condição T3 provavelmente gerou estresse nos animais, pois se observou monocitose significativa no leucograma e na análise do lavado traqueobrônquico, uma diminuição significativa de macrófagos alveolares gigantes, provavelmente por diminuição da atividade macrofágica alveolar, caracterizando esta temperatura e umidade relativa do ar como favoráveis ao aparecimento de doenças respiratórias.(AU)
The study sought to evaluate whether environment temperature (T) and relative humidity (UR) had an impact on the leucogram and cytology of the respiratory tract of healthy cattle. Blood and tracheobronchial lavage were collected from 5 female healthy 4 to 7- month-old Jersey calves in three moments: T1 (T=5oC, UR=93%) T2 (control environment temperature, T 22oC, UR 80%), and T3 (T=30oC, UR=41%). Monocytosis in the leucogram and a decrease in alveolar giant macrophages were observed in T3. It appears that the weather condition had an influence on the respiratory immune system of the calves due to a stress situation. We conclude that elevated temperature associated with low relative humidity appears to favor respiratory disease in 4 to 7-month-old calves.(AU)
