Background: Penile fracture is a pathology of young cattle that perform precocious and disordered breeding. The incompatibility of height between males and females and sodomy between males cause a great pressure on the sigmoid flexure and retractor muscle of the penis, which are the main causes and sites of organ injury. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological and pathological aspects of penile fractures observed in young bulls raised in pre-export feedlots (PEFs) in southern Brazil. Cases: In 2 PEFs located in the municipalities of Pelotas (property 1) and Capão do Leão (property 2), 3 male cattle [1 from property 1 and 2 from property 2] presented subcutaneous edema in the foreskin and perineum, associated with dysuria. The evolution of the clinical picture was approximately 20 days in all cases, with evolution to death. The bovine necropsied on property 1 had an increased volume and inguinal edema, involving the penis and scrotal sac. Necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue and local musculature was also observed. The testicles were surrounded by the necrotic tissue, and the right testis was swollen, with flaccid parenchyma adhering to the tunica albuginea. In the necropsy of 1 bull from property 2, an increase in the inguinal volume was observed, with an extensive area of necrosis and edema extending from the prepuce to the caudal musculature of the scrotal sac. There were also marked varicosis in the sigmoid flexure and necrosis of the adjacent region, without the involvement of the corpus cavernosum. During the necropsy of the 2 young bulls, fragments of organs from the abdominal, thoracic, and brain cavities were collected and fixed in 10% buffered formalin. From the bull of the property 2, an anatomical piece consisting of the penis, prepuce, and testicles was also collected and fixed in 10% buffered formalin. After 48 h, the tissue samples were cleaved, embedded in paraffin, cut into 3-µm-thick sections, and stained using hematoxylin and eosin (HE). A histological evaluation of the penile lesions in both cattle revealed intense hemorrhage, congestion, and necrosis of the muscles and tissues adjacent to the corpus cavernosum. In addition to areas of dystrophic calcification, neutrophil and macrophage infiltration was also observed. In the bull from the property 1, an intense edema and proliferation of fibrous tissue surrounding the urethra were noted. There were also marked tubular degeneration and intense infiltration of neutrophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages in the inner portion of the tunica albuginea. Discussion: In the present cases, the diagnosis was based on epidemiological data associated with clinical signs and pathology. The macroscopic lesions observed were probably due to the involvement of blood vessels adjacent to the penis, which suffered trauma during sodomy mating among cattle. These lesions have been described in other reports of this pathology and in diseases, such as acropostitis-phimosis, fibropapilloma of the glans, preputial abscess, and urolithiasis, and the differential diagnosis of these diseases must be carried out, as they have different etiologies. In the bulls of the present study, no lesions were observed in the corpus cavernosum, and this condition was attributed to the presence of varicosis and accumulation of urine in the prepuce, due to the difficulty in exposing the penis. Histologically, there were intense hemorrhage, congestion, and necrosis of the muscles and tissues adjacent to the corpus cavernosum, with the infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages, and areas of dystrophic calcification. The presence of necrotic lesions in tissues adjacent to the penis may be related to hypoxia, vascular lesions, or the action of chemical elements present in the urine. In both cases, vascular lesions were present, which were attributed to the main triggering factor for the disease.

Background: Toxoplasmosis is caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular protozoan that belongs to the Apicomplexa phylum, coccidian subclass, and affects all warm-blooded animals. The role of opossums in the epidemiology of toxoplasmosis in Brazil is not fully understood, and there are very few descriptions of toxoplasmosis lesions in these animals. This report describes the anatomopathological, molecular and immunohistochemical findings of a case of encephalic toxoplasmosis in free-living white-eared possum (Didelphis albiventris). Case: A young male opossum (D. albiventris), was treated at the Veterinary Hospital of Wild Animals of the University of Brasília, Federal District. The animal was apathetic, uncoordinated, reluctant to move, and had an exposed proximal fracture in the left radius and ulna with laceration of muscles and adjacent tendinous structures. Amputation on the left thoracic limb was performed followed by analgesia and antibiotic therapy. The environment is frequented by other wild animals, and stray cats have access to the patio of the building. Twenty-five days after arriving at the hospital, the animal was found dead in its cage. After death, a necropsy was performed. Organ fragments from the abdominal cavity, thoracic and central nervous system were collected, processed routinely for histology and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Macroscopic lesions in the central nervous system were not observed. On microscopy, the brain showed moderate random glial nodules throughout the neuropil associated with the presence of spherical to elongated parasitic cysts of about 20 µm, with a thin wall and with its interior full of bradyzoites, consistent with Toxoplasma gondii. There was also moderate fibrinoid necrosis and moderate multifocal lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate surrounding the blood vessels (perivascular cuffs) To investigate the etiology of the brain injury, brain sections were subjected to immunohistochemistry (IHC) and real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technique for detection of T. gondii and Neospora caninum. Immunostaining for T. gondii in the cyst wall and in bradyzoites and negative immunostaining for N. caninum. qPCR was positive for T. gondii and negative for N. caninum. Discussion: Diagnosis of encephalic toxoplasmosis in a Didelphis albiventris was possible based on histopathological, immunohistochemical and molecular findings. The morphological classification of the brain lesion was important for the diagnosis. Brain toxoplasmosis in opossums usually results in focal areas of malacia on macroscopy and focally extensive necrosis on microscopy, neutrophil infiltrate, calcified necrotic material, and perivascular cuffs of lymphocytes and plasma cells. In the present case, similar histopathological lesions were noted, but no significant macroscopic changes were observed. The etiology here was defined by immunohistochemistry and qPCR, techniques proven to be useful and with good specificity for diagnosing toxoplasmosis in mammals. It is believed that the positive immunohistochemical and molecular result for Toxoplasma gondii together with the negative result for Neospora caninum were conclusive for the diagnosis. Thus, we demonstrate here a post mortem diagnosis of toxoplasmosis in a free-living synanthropic opossum and the use of anatomopathology, immunohistochemistry and real-time polymerase chain reaction as a diagnostic option for this disease in opossums.

A study was carried out to determine the effects of soybean meal replacement with different amounts of blue lupine in the diets of turkeys on the growth rate, anatomic carcass dissection data, chemical indicators of breast and thigh muscles and the content of tryptophan and oxyprolin. In total three hundred and sixty cross BIG-6 turkeys were allotted to two control and ten experimental groups of 30 one-day-old turkeys. The control group of turkeys was fed the diet containing soybean meal, whereas the trial groups were offered different amounts (from 20 to 30%) of lupines. Group 4 and 5 were additionally given probiotic mixture Bio Plus 2B and allzyme SSF, respectively. Soybean oil replacement from 20 to 30% lupine in the diet had no influence on the growth rate, dressing percentage, edible parts and abdominal fat content of turkeys. The study indicated that lupines in the diet of turkeys had a different effect on the meat quality of different genders. Lupines did not have any negative effect on the meat quality of female turkeys and 30% lupines even improved the protein value index of breast muscles. However, 20-30 and 25-30% lupines in male turkey diets lowered dry matter and protein contents in breast muscles but had no negative influence on the main quality indicators in thigh muscles. The results of the study showed that the negative effect on the male breast muscle quality might be avoided using Bio Plus 2B or allzyme SSF additives in the male diets containing 30% lupines.(AU)

This study aimed to present epidemiological, clinical and anatomopathological data of five dogs with ischemic neuromyopathy secondary to aortic thrombosis or thromboembolism. The dogs were females, with eleven years of age or more, that had paraplegia (80%) or hind limb monoplegia (20%). Forty percent of the cases (n=2) had lameness previously the motor disfunction. The main clinical findings include absence of unilateral or bilateral femoral pulse, cool hind limbs extremities, muscle pain above the knee joint and absence of nociception (deep pain) on the hind limbs digits. Four dogs were euthanized due to the poor prognosis, and the last one died within 24 hours of hospital admission. The necropsy findings were cardiac lesions in three dogs, neoplastic disease in one, and unknown cause on the other. The thrombi were located on the abdominal aorta, extending to the iliac arteries. Even with low incidence, the ischemic neuromyopathy should be included in the differential diagnosis of dogs with lameness, paraparesis, or unilateral or bilateral paraplegia, when neurological signs are compatible with lower motor neuron lesion (L4-S3) and acute or chronic progression. The digital and/or vascular doppler evaluation of the femoral pulse must be used and can assist on the disease diagnosis, avoiding treatments for other illnesses.(AU)

Background: Green iguanas (Iguana iguana) are arboreal herbivorous species of lizards of the genus Iguana, native to Central and South America and Caribbean. Because demand for pet iguanas increased the incidence of problems related to sanitary handling and feeding of these animals also increased. Cases of atony caused by ingestion of foreign bodies, particularly of substratum can occur. This article aims to contribute to a better clarification of atonia in the Green Iguana that is caused by the ingestion of foreign bodies. Case: A 1-year-old female green iguana weighing 1,3 kg, was referred to the Veterinary Clinic Pet Fauna, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, on August 2012, with an apparent loss of appetite. The animal was apathetic, dehydrated, had a abdominal distension and low body score. Revealed an increase of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), monocytosis and decreased of mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (CAGH). Ozolaimus cirratus was found on parasitological examination of faecal sample. Ultrasound showed hyper echoic nodular structures in the region of the stomach and intestine and intestinal atony. Radiographs revealed radiopaque hyperdense areas in the topography of stomach and intestinal lumen, compatible with foreign body. The treatment fluid was set with 0.9% sodium chloride solution (50 mg/kg, SC, every 24 h), ceftazidime (20 mg/kg, IM, every 72 h)...(AU)

In recent years, some Ecuadorian shrimp farmers have reported several cases of muscle necrosis in P. vannamei grow out cultures, associated to low mortalities at harvest. This abnormal condition is characterized by focal to extensive necrotic areas in striated tail muscle tissues, displaying a white, opaque appearance. Furthermore, histological analysis from suspected samples with macroscopic lesions revealed a loss of sarcomeric structure accompanied by coagulative muscle necrosis along with hemocytic infiltration. Two viruses, not reported in Ecuador, are described as etiological agents of muscle necrosis in P. vannamei: infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV) and Penaeus vannamei nodavirus (PvNV). In this study, the etiology of the muscle necrosis cases found in the Pacific white shrimp P. vannamei cultured in Ecuador was examined. This muscle necrosis was hypothesized to be caused by an infectious agent. Three sequential challenge tests, using diseased P. vannamei with macroscopic lesions (opaque, whitish discolorations in the abdominal muscles) as starting material (crude inoculum), were carried out. Essentially, histological examination confirmed that most of the challenged shrimp had lesions in skeletal muscle, including multifocal necrosis, fibrocytic inflammation and phagocytosis. In the first trial, 7 challenged shrimp (out of 10) presented multifocal necrosis and hemocytic infiltration in the skeletal muscle. In the second trial, 14 challenged shrimp (out of 20) exhibited coagulative muscle necrosis and hemocytic infiltration. In the third trial, 48 challenged shrimp (out of 69) showed muscle necrosis and hemocytic infiltration. There were no mortalities throughout the all four-week trials. All challenged shrimp tested by RT-PCR assay were negative for IMNV. In our experimental procedures, muscle necrosis could be consistently reproduced through three sequential trials, confirming that the disease has an infectious etiology. Our results suggest that the etiological agent of this disease could be a new infectious agent or a different strain of IMNV.(AU)

The fish and pay constitute recent activity, widespread throughout Brazil, one option for leisure, entertainment and services, lacking adequate regulatory framework and its necessary safeguards. Barely establishments installed, irregular, with inadequate management without technical supervision and inspec tion may account for environmental impacts and damage to public health. In this work proposed to evaluate the influence of seasonal variation, represented by the dry season and the rainy season on water quality and fish (Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus) from five different fish and pay located in São Paulo. Physical and chemical analysis (temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH) were performed and microbiological cultivation of water (fecal coliform), analysis of the installation time of rigor mortis-full in specimens of fish and quantitative microbiological analysis (estimates of mesophilic aerobic microorganisms, of psychrotrophic aerobic microorganisms and bacteria of the genera Pseudomonas spp and Aeromonas spp.) of the surface slime, gills, of the abdominal cavity wash, skin and muscles with the Nile tilapia fillets. There was a significant difference (p <0.05) between the periods analyzed for temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH of the cultivation of water from fish and pay. For fecal coliforms, 20% (4/20) of the tanks of fish and pay were considered unsuitable for fish production during the rainy season. Both the surface slime, as to the gills, there was a reflection of that condition for, respectively, 10% (3/30) and 20% (6/30) with excess fecal coliform in periods of drought and rain. Regardless of the period after slaughter by brain destruction was found that the rigor-mortis reached its fullness five hours after is harvesting. Most of these parameters, represented by microbiological estimates of surface slime, gills, wash the abdominal cavity and the muscles with skin, there was a significant difference (p <0.05) between periods of drought and rain. To the genre Aeromonas spp. was no significant difference (P <0.05) only in the surface slime. For steaks observed, the quantification of mesophilic at time zero, the highest estimate for both the rainy season and for the drought, leading to a reduction in the hours passed. Opposite behavior occurred for psychrotrophic and bacteria of the genus Pseudomonas spp., In accordance with the temperature storage and preferential classification of microorganisms. Bacteria of the genus Aeromonas spp. They were only found in samples of steaks during the rainy season. We conclude that the rainy season interfered negatively on water quality and fish and pay of fish, but independent of the period, are necessary preventive hygienic-sanitary measures in order to ensure the safety of the final product.

Three cases of uroperitoneum in Thorough bred foals, two females and one male, are described in the present study. The animais showed clinical sings of mild to moderate abdominal pain, tachycardia, tachypnea, abdominal distention and straining to urinate. The diagnosis of uroperitoneum was made by transabdominal ultrasound examination and confirmed by the ratio of [abdominal fluid creatinine] : [serum creatinine] greater than two.

Initially the foals were treated with intravenous fluid therapy associated with progressive drainage of peritoneal fluid forsubsequent exploratory laparotomy in order to identify and repair the lesion. A ruptured urachus was identified in the20-day-old filly and in the 8-day-old colt. PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to assess, in cadavers, the resistance to medial traction of the posterior and anterior layer of the rectus abdominis muscle sheath. METHODS: An anatomical, prospective, self-controlled study was carried out in 20 male cadavers. An evaluation of the tension of the posterior and anterior layers of the rectus abdominis muscle sheath was performed following anatomical dissection of these structures. The traction necessary to advance the tissue ten millimeters was assessed using an analogic dynamometer. RESULTS: There was no significant statistical difference between the necessary traction at various levels of the anterior and posterior layers of the rectus sheath. However, medial advancement of the anterior layer of the rectus sheath required more traction strength than did advancement of the posterior layer to the midline. CONCLUSION: There is no difference in the tensile strength in the various levels of the anterior and posterior layers of the rectus sheath; however, medial advancement of the the anterior layer required more traction strength.

PURPOSE: Preoperative imaging evaluation may be useful for determining the position of recti abdominis muscles before their correction. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of ultrasonography to measure the width of rectus abdominis muscle diastasis. METHODS: Rectus diastasis was measured by ultrasonography preoperatively in 20 females. Rectus diastasis was measured in seven levels along the anterior rectus sheath by ultrasound after sustained deep inspiration and after expiration. Rectus diastasis, at the same levels, was also measured after its exposition during abdominoplasty by two independent observers, using a surgical compass. These values were compared using Wilcoxon's statistical text, for non independent values. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the values obtained by ultrasound and those measured during surgery in the supra-umbilical levels and at the level of the umbilicus. However, below the umbilicus these values differed significantly, showing smaller values in the imaging evaluation. CONCLUSION: Ultrasonography is an accurate method to measure rectus diastasis above the umbilicus and at the umbilical level.(AU)

PURPOSE: To assess the tensile strength of polypropylene and polypropylene associated with polyglactin meshes (Vypro II® - Ethicon®, Somerville, NJ, USA) in a situation of partial separation of abdominal muscle aponeurosis on rats. METHODS: Thirty rats were used of the Wistar strain, which were randomized into two groups of 15 specimens each. In both groups an aponeurotic-muscle deformity was created on the abdominal wall measuring 3.0 x 1.0 cm, which was closed with polypropylene mesh (polypropylene group) or Vypro® mesh (vypro group). After 28 days the rats underwent euthanasia and an area was removed from the abdominal wall with which a strip was made measuring 2.0 cm in length and 6.0 cm in width comprising the abdominal muscles with the implanted mesh. This sample was placed in a mechanical test machine in which a constant force was applied contrary to the tissue strips. Maximum force expressed in Newton was considered until full rupture of the sample occurred. The non-parametric Kruskal - Wallis test was used for statistical analysis admitting p<0.05. RESULTS: Out of the thirty animals, there were two deaths in the vypro group and one unit in the polypropylene group was lost. One animal in the polypropylene group developed hernia during the study and another one developed granuloma of the abdominal wall. All animals in both groups developed epiplon adherence to the mesh. The average force was 48.08 N for the polypropylene group and 45.32 for the vypro® group. CONCLUSION: In these experimental conditions it could be observed that there is no statistically significant difference in the rupture force of the polypropylene and Vypro® meshes (p=0.54).(AU)

The laparoscopic colopexy with bovine pericardium preserved in glycerol was compared to incisional approach by celiotomy. Twenty mongrel dogs were used after being separated in two groups. In the laparoscopic surgery, two incisions were made on the transverse abdominal muscles, and the implant was positioned through the muscle flap, involving the bowel. Finally, the extremities of the mesh were clipped. Twenty-eight days after this surgery, the experimental animals were submitted to a new laparoscopic surgery, now aiming at observing the results of both techniques. All patients of the celiotomy group maintained the colopexy. However, none of the animals submitted to the laparoscopic surgery maintained the bowel fixation. The proposed technique is not indicated to promote colopexy in dogs.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of venous supercharging in deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flap in rats. METHODS: 20 Wistar rats were randomized in 2 groups: control group (C), all had flaps raised based on the deep inferior epigastric perforator vessels (DIEP), and experimental group (E), which was identical to group C, except that the contralateral superficial inferior epigastric vein was also kept with the flap. Flow studies using laser Doppler flowmetry where performed daily in the four zones of the flap. On the 7th postoperative day rats were killed and flap survival was determined using digital planimetry. RESULTS: Flow values were presented as a percentage of the baseline flow after incision of the flap edges. The surviving flap area was demonstrated as a percentage of the total flap area. Evaluation by digital planimetry showed that flap survival in group E was higher than in group C (97,38 percent±1,32 percentvs.44,13 percent±4,83 percent, p=0,0006). CONCLUSION: This study shows that venous supercharging of the rat DIEP flap results in greater flap survival(AU)
