Resumo

Background: Juvenile panhypopituitarism is an endocrinopathy that affects young dogs and must be differentiated from other causes of height disorders, as one could have a deficiency of one or more adenohypophysis hormones, besides growth hormone. Diagnosis consists of excluding endocrine and non-endocrine causes. Treatment requires administration of heterologous porcine growth hormone or progestins, as well as supplementing other hormones that are deficient in the circulation. The prognosis for these patients tends to be unfavorable and they have a shorter life expectancy. The present case aimed to report the therapeutic challenges in a dog diagnosed with juvenile panhypopituitarism. Case: This study presents the case of a 6-month-old crossbred Labrador/Brazilian Fila dog, not neutered, 6.7 kg of body weight (body condition score 5/9), with a growth disorder and persistence of the puppy coat, when compared to other members of the same litter. During inspection, it was possible to observe an undersized dog and soft puppy coat, besides no bone irregularities or joint tenderness was noted. The other physical examination parameters were within the normal range for the species. No changes in complete blood count and only increases in urea, cholesterol and alkaline phosphatase activity were observed. Thyroid and abdominal ultrasound (US) examination did not reveal any remarkable changes. After serum dosage of insulin-like growth factor, thyroxine, thyrostimulating hormone, and cortisol, the patient was diagnosed with juvenile panhypopituitarism and underwent therapy with medroxyprogesterone and thyroid hormone supplementation. Monitoring was instituted at intervals of 3, 6, and 12 weeks, and currently every 3 or 4 months and the IGF-1 values normalized after 6 months with. After 8 months of therapy, the patient had good body growth and bone mineralization compared to the time of diagnosis. However, skeletal development was completed only 12 months after hormone replacement, accompanied by the presence of vertebral osteophytes and coxofemoral osteoarticular alterations. Considering chronic use of progestins, ovariosalpingohysterectomy (OSH) was recommended, but for personal reasons, the owners chose to do not submit her to surgery. After 18 months of treatment, the dog starts to exhibit prostration, selective appetite, and increased abdominal volume. After imaging exam, she was forwarded for OSH, due to consistent findings of pyometra. Subsequently, even the supervision of possible comorbidities involved in the chronic use of progestins was maintained at half-yearly intervals, the bitch returned to the service with skin thickening, increased limb volume, and macroglossia after 60 months of therapy. At this point IGF-1 values were higher when compared to the previous measurements and the application of medroxyprogesterone was suspended. Its supplementation was reintroduced only after 8 months when IGF-1 was significantly reduced. To date, the patient is close to 6 years of age and with a good quality of life. Discussion: The greatest therapeutic challenge for these patients involves dealing with the adverse effects of progestins, mainly related to reproductive disorders and alopecia at the application site, as well as maintaining adequate hormone replacement in order to avoid hypersomatotropism. Although longevity is lower in these individuals, the patient in this report has achieved 6 years of age and has had an excellent quality of life so far.

Resumo

Background: The medical science of birds, with the exception of aviculture, has a very short history compared to other subdisciplines of veterinary medicine. With this in mind, the current work aims to report the case of a buff-necked ibis with an open fracture of the left humerus, presenting the surgical treatment and anesthetic protocol used, in order to contribute to the avian medical literature. Case: An adult buff-necked ibis (Theristicus caudatus) was referred to the University Veterinary Hospital with an open fracture of the left humeral shaft, 7 days after rescue. During the physical examination, a skin lesion was identified in the fracture area, with signs of low vascularization, devitalization, necrotic tissues, and purulent secretions being noted. On radiographic examination, the fracture was classified as comminuted, with exposure of the left humeral shaft. After evaluating the limb, it was decided to amputate the wing, and 24 h later, the patient was referred to the operating room after fasting for 4 h. As pre-anesthetic medication, ketamine (20 mg/kg) and midazolam (1 mg/kg) were administered, both intramuscularly. Orotracheal intubation was performed, after which the tracheal tube was connected to a Baraka-type gas-free system and the supply of isoflurane was started through a universal vaporizer, diluted in 100% oxygen. For transoperative analgesia, brachial plexus block was performed using 2% lidocaine (2 mg/kg). During the surgical procedure, an incision was made in the skin and subcutaneous tissue in the middle third of the left humerus, and detachment of the greater deltoid muscle was performed with a periosteal elevator, followed by excision of the tensor propatagialis. In the ventrodorsal region, circular ligation of the brachial vein, ulnar vein and artery, and median-ulnar nerve was carried out, and disarticulation of the scapulacoracoid-humeral region. Subsequently, abolition of dead space and a myorrhaphy were performed, followed by demorrhaphy. In the immediate post-operative period, morphine (5 mg/kg), meloxicam (0.1 mg/kg), and enrofloxacin (10 mg/kg) were administered intramuscularly. The patient was discharged from the hospital 6 h after the end of the surgical procedure. Discussion: Interest in the conservation of wild birds is one of the causes of the increased demand for anesthetic and surgical procedures in these species. However, it is a challenge for professionals in the field. The use of analgesics is recommended for reasons of well-being, but also because of the possibility of reducing the concentration of inhalational anesthetics in surgical procedures. Ketamine associated with midazolam promotes sufficient sedation and muscle relaxation in the patient, enabling safe preoperative management, in addition to reducing the amount of inhaled anesthetics used during the transoperative period. Isofluorane promotes safe general anesthesia for birds and has an advantage over injectable drugs, as it provides better dynamic control of anesthetic depth in these species. The brachial plexus block performed is a simple procedure that promotes quality anesthesia and analgesia in the perioperative period. The choice for amputation was due to the absence of musculature for closure, severe skin, muscle, and bone devitalization, and the infectious process in the region, factors that would prevent osteosynthesis. Although amputation through the bone is preferable, the disarticulation technique was used due to the absence of a healthy proximal humeral fragment. The patient's death can be explained by the poor nutritional status the bird was in, as it presented an open fracture with severe contamination, a concomitant injury that occurred during the possible trauma, and the excessive time between the day of the trauma and the day of medical attendance. However, the surgical and anesthetic procedures were adequate and satisfactory for the patient. The importance of identifying and treating diseases secondary to contaminated fractures in these species is emphasized.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of live yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii) on the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the shoulder and loin of Boer x Saanen crossbred goat kids. Twenty-seven carcasses were used, 13 females and 14 uncastrated males with an average age of 192 days, weighing 30.76 kg, distributed in a completely randomised design using a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement (diet and sex). The yeast was added to the feed before pelletising in a proportion of 0.050 g/kg dry matter (DM). When the goats reached an average of 30 kg of live weight, they were slaughtered. No effects of live yeast on quantitative carcass and qualitative characteristics of shoulder and loin were observed. Regarding sex, males had higher slaughter weights (31.73 kg), empty carcass weight (27.98 kg), hot carcass weight (14.39 kg), cold carcass weight (14.22 kg), higher carcass compactness index (0.28 kg/cm), lower slaughter age (176 days) and lower cooling loss (1.20%). For the cut yields, females presented a higher loin yield (11.55%) and males presented a higher neck yield (6.84%). In the shoulder, males presented a higher proportion of bone (18.58%), while females presented a higher proportion of fat (17.09%) and muscle:bone (3.47). In the loin, females showed higher fat deposition (19.54%) in relation to males. The inclusion of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii in the crossbred goat kids' diet did not generate differences in the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the shoulder and loin. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência da levedura viva (Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii) sobre as características quantitativas e qualitativas da paleta e do lombo de cabritos mestiços Boer x Saanen. Foram utilizadas 27 carcaças, 13 fêmeas e 14 machos não castrados com idade média de 192 dias e peso de 30,76 kg, distribuídas em delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 2 x 2 (dieta e sexo). A levedura foi adicionada à ração antes da peletização na proporção de 0,050 g / kg de MS. Quando os cabritos atingiram a média de 30 kg de peso vivo, os animais foram abatidos. Não foram observados efeitos da levedura viva na carcaça quantitativa e nas características qualitativas da paleta e do lombo. Em relação ao sexo, os machos apresentaram maiores pesos de abate (31,73 kg), peso de carcaça vazia (27,98 kg), peso de carcaça quente (14,39 kg), peso de carcaça fria (14,22 kg), maior índice de compacidade de carcaça (0,28 kg/cm), menor abate idade (176 dias) e menor perda por resfriamento (1,20%). Para os rendimentos de cortes, as fêmeas apresentaram maior rendimento de lombo (11,55%) e os machos apresentaram maior rendimento de pescoço (6,84%). Na paleta, o sexo masculino apresentou maior proporção de osso (18,58%), enquanto o feminino apresentou maior proporção de gordura (17,09%) e músculo: osso (3,47). No lombo, as fêmeas apresentaram maior deposição de gordura (19,54%) em relação aos machos. A inclusão da levedura Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii na dieta de cabritos mestiços não expressa diferenças nas características quantitativas e qualitativas da paleta e do lombo. (AU)

Resumo

Foi elaborada um padrão de qualidade de cortes de frango (peito com osso, asas, coxa e sobrecoxa e filé de coxa e sobrecoxa) em um abatedouro no Sudeste Goiano. A análise foi efetuada por meio da obtenção de amostras, análise visual e captura de imagem, com 9 amostras de peito com osso, 13 de asa, 20 de coxa e sobrecoxa e 9 de filé de coxa e sobrecoxa. O padrão de qualidade não aceitável (presença de fraturas, presença de pés, hematomas, ausência de pele, entre outros) apresentou maior número de amostras. Foi possível concluir que a padronização é uma forma de melhorar continuamente o processo, agregar valor ao produto e evitar insatisfação do cliente.(AU)


A quality standard of chicken cuts (bone-in breast, wings, thigh and drumstick and thigh and drumstick fillet) was prepared in a slaughterhouse in Southeast Goiás. The analysis was performed by obtaining samples, visual analysis and image capture, with 9 samples of breast with bone, 13 of wing, 20 of thigh and drumstick and 9 of thigh and drumstick fillet. The unacceptable quality standard (presence of fractures, presence of feet, bruises, absence of skin, among others) showed a greater number of samples. It was concluded that standardization is a way to continuously improve the process, add value to the product and avoid customer dissatisfaction.(AU)

Foram alojados 1400 pintos de corte machos, aos 7 dias de alojamento, esses foram pesados e divididos em seis tratamentos experimentais, com 6 repetições e 38 aves por repetição. Os tratamentos constituíam da manutenção da quantidade de vitamina D3para frangos de corte em: 100%, 75%, 50%, 25% e 0%, e adição do metabolito vitamínico bioativo [1,25(OH)2D3] em quantidade fixa, mais o tratamento controle, que recebeu somente a vitamina D3 na dose recomendada como única fonte de vitamina D. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância usando o procedimento General Linear Models do software SAS® e, em caso de diferenças estatisticamente significativas, as médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Dunnett a 5% de probabilidade. O peso médio, o ganho de peso e o ganho de peso diário diferiram significativamente (p0,05) para a conversão alimentar. A morfometria óssea não foi influenciado (p>0,05) pela redução da vitamina D3 no suplemento vitamínico e nem pela utilização do 1,25(OH)2D3. O percentual de cálcio nas cinzas das tíbias nos tratamentos em que houve inclusão de 75% Vit D3+1,25(OH)2D3 foi superior (p<0,05)...


The objective of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of 1.25(OH)2D3 as a substitute of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) in the vitamin supplement of broiler diets, as well as the influence of this metabolite on performance and bone quality up to 21 days of age. A total of 1,400 male chicks were used. At 7 days of age, the animals were weighed and divided into six experimental treatments, with 6 replicates and 38 birds per replicate. The treatments consisted of maintaining the amount of vitamin D3 for broilers at 100%, 75%, 50%, 25% and 0% plus the addition of a fixed quantity of bioactive vitamin metabolite [1.25(OH)2D3]. As the control treatment, the animals received only vitamin D3 at the recommended dose as the sole source of vitamin D. Data were submitted to analysis of variance using the General Linear Models procedure of the SAS® software. In the case of statistically significant differences, means were compared by the Dunnett test at 5% probability. The mean weight, weight gain and daily weight gain differed significantly (p0.05) in feed conversion. Bone morphometry was not influenced (p>0.05) by the reduction of vitamin D3 in the vitamin supplement nor by the use of 1.25(OH)2D3. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects available phosphorus levels and dicalcium phosphate particle size on the live performance, and egg parameters and bone parameters of Japanese quails in lay. The experimental diets were based on corn and soybean meal and formulated to contain 2900 kcal metabolizable energy (ME)kg-1, 200 g kg-1 crude protein (CP) and 30.5 g kg-1 calcium (Ca). Feeds were supplied ad libitum. Laying Japanese quails (n=720, 20-wk-old)were distributed in a completely randomized design in a 5 x 2 factorial arrangement, with five levels of available phosphorus (avP; 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 g kg-1) and two dicalcium phosphate particle sizes (fine orcoarse), totaling ten treatments with eight replicates of nine birds each. Egg laying rate, feed intake per bird per day, egg weight, egg mass, feed conversion ratio per egg mass and per dozen eggs, eggshell, yolk and albumen relative and absolute weights, as well as bone ash, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium contents were evaluated. Based on the results, avP recommendations for 20- to 32-wk-old laying Japanese quails varies according with phosphate source particle size and the dietary avP levels of 4.40 g kg-1 and 3.85 g kg-1avP levels when using fine and coarse particle dicalcium phosphate, respectively, yielded the best results.(AU)

Resumo

The present research aimed to investigate the stability of pellets and phosphorus leaching of diets formulated for juveniles of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), with different sources of phosphorus and different exposure times in water. Six diets were elaborated by varying the source of phosphorus (1 dicalcium phosphate (DP); 2 meat and bone meal (MBM); 3 poultry meal (PM); 4 anchovy meal (AM); 5 tilapia filleting industrial meal (TM); 6 calcined bone meal (CBM)) and, then, were submitted to four exposure times in water (5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes), with three replicates. Thus, 72 aquariums of 30liters were used, each being an experimental unit. All diets were evaluated for electrical conductivity of water, turgidity of pellets, mineral matter leaching, flotation of pellets, and total phosphorus leaching. Only turgidity and flotation of pellets varied with the different sources of phosphorus in the diets. The MBM diet had the highest turgidity of pellets. The PM, AM, and CBM diets had the highest flotation of pellets. The total phosphorus leaching had a linear effect with the increase of the exposure time, showing a greater release of phosphorus in the water with increase of exposure time. Data showed that PM, AM, and CBM diets had less potential impact on the aquatic environment. Conversely, the TM diet has greater polluting potential. These results showed that diets formulated with different sources of phosphorus exhibit distinct actions in the water, providing different effects on the fish culture environment.(AU)


O presente trabalho tem como objetivo investigar a estabilidade de pellets e a lixiviação do fósforo na água proveniente de diferentes dietas formuladas para juvenis de tilápia do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus), considerando distintas fontes de fósforo e diferentes tempos de exposição na água. Para tanto, foram elaboradas seis dietas com variação da fonte de fósforo (1: fosfato dicálcico (DP); 2: farelo de carne e ossos (MBM); 3: farelo de aves (PM); 4: farelo de anchova (AM); 5: farelo industrial de filetagem de tilápia (TM); 6: farelo de osso calcinado (CBM)), as quais foram submetidas a quatro tempos de exposição em água (5, 10, 15 e 20 minutos), com três repetições. Utilizaram-se 72 aquários de 30 litros, sendo cada um deles uma unidade experimental. A água dentro dos aquários foi mantida sob constante aeração e temperatura ao redor de 25 °C. Todas as dietas foram avaliadas quanto à condutividade elétrica da água, turgidez, lixiviação de matéria mineral, flotação de pellets e lixiviação total do fósforo. Apenas a turgidez e a flutuação dos pellets variaram com as diferentes fontes de fósforo nas dietas. A dieta MBM apresentou a maior turgidez de pellets. As dietas PM, AM e CBM apresentaram a maior flutuação de pellets. A lixiviação do fósforo total teve um efeito linear com o aumento do tempo de exposição, resultando em maior liberação de fósforo na água. A lixiviação de matéria mineral apresentou interação entre fontes de fósforo e tempos de exposição das dietas, com efeito linear para a dieta TM. As dietas PM, AM e CBM apresentam as menores concentrações de efluentes em relação a dieta TM. Esses resultados revelaram que dietas formuladas com diferentes fontes de fósforo apresentam ações distintas na água em relação ao potencial poluidor.(AU)

Múltiplas fraturas da pelve podem gerar angústia pélvica. A hemipelvectomia, caracterizada pela remoção de fragmentos ósseos da pelve, é considerada terapia de salvamento. O presente relato descreve a técnica de hemipelvectomia interna parcial em quatro casos de obstipação por angústia pélvica traumática em cães, com resultados alvissareiros. Todos os pacientes apresentavam tenesmo e retenção fecal. Após a realização do procedimento, os pacientes apresentaram normoquesia imediata e apoio do membro ipsilateral ao procedimento após 10 a 20 dias, mostrando a exequibilidade da técnica em animais leves, uma vez que houve melhora clínica sem alterações na deambulação.(AU)

Improving the quality and energy content of rations increases performance in feedlot cattle, resulting in higher weight at slaughter, better carcass quality and a higher yield of non-carcass components. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing concentrate content in the ration on the carcass traits and weight of non-carcass components of young bulls finished in a feedlot. Eighteen young crossbred ½ Purunã x ½ Canchim bulls were used, with an average body weight (BW) of 278 kg and 12 months of age at the start of the experiment. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatments and six replicates, where the treatments were the contents of 0.71, 0.97 and 1.24% BW day-1 of concentrate in the ration, on a dry matter (DM) basis. Corn silage was used as roughage and was provided ad libitum during the experiment. The young bulls were kept in the feedlot for 168 days and slaughtered at 17 months of age. There was a linear effect of concentrate content on the slaughter weight (SW) and hot carcass weight (HCW), which increased from 433 to 485 kg and from 248 to 280 kg between 0.71 and 1.24% BW in DM day-1 of concentrate. This represented an increase of 9.87 kg in SW and 6.16 kg in HCW for each 0.10% BW in DM day-1 of concentrate added to the ration. The hot carcass yield, rib eye area, subcutaneous fat thickness and the proportions of bone, muscle and fat in the carcass were not affected by the concentrate content and showed mean values of 57.3%, 79.6 cm2, 3.20 mm, 14.88%, 65.21% and 20.67%, respectively. There was a linear effect of concentrate content on the carcass temperature after cooling, which increased from 8.1 to 9.0 oC between 0.71 and 1.24% BW in DM day-1 of concentrate. An increase of 0.16 oC in the post-cooling carcass temperature for each 0.10% BW in DM day-1 of concentrate added to the ration was observed.(AU)


A melhoria da qualidade e do aporte energético da ração proporciona alto desempenho aos bovinos confinados, resultando em elevado peso ao abate, melhor qualidade da carcaça e alto rendimento dos componentes não-carcaça. Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a influência do aumento do teor de concentrado da ração nas características de carcaça e no peso de componentes não-carcaça de tourinhos terminados em confinamento. Foram utilizados 18 tourinhos mestiços ½ Purunã x ½ Canchim, que iniciaram o experimento com 278 kg de peso corporal (PC) e 12 meses de idade, em média. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com três tratamentos e seis repetições, em que os tratamentos foram os teores de 0,71; 0,97 e 1,24% PC dia-1 de concentrado na ração, em base de matéria seca (MS). A silagem de milho foi utilizada como volumoso e fornecida à vontade durante o experimento. Os animais permaneceram confinados por 168 dias e foram abatidos com 17 meses de idade. Houve efeito linear dos teores de concentrado no peso ao abate (PA) e no peso de carcaça quente (PCQ), que aumentaram de 433 para 485 kg, e de 248 para 280 kg entre os teores de 0,71 e 1,24% PC em MS dia-1 de concentrado. Isso correspondeu ao aumento de 9,87 kg no PA e de 6,16 kg no PCQ dos tourinhos a cada 0,10% PC em MS dia-1 de concentrado adicionado à ração. O rendimento de carcaça quente, a área de olho de lombo, a espessura de gordura subcutânea e as proporções de osso, músculo e gordura da carcaça não foram influenciados pelos teores de concentrado, apresentando valores médios de 57,3%, 79,6 cm2, 3,20 mm, 14,88%, 65,21% e 20,67%, respectivamente. Houve efeito linear dos teores de concentrado na temperatura da carcaça após o resfriamento, que aumentou de 8,1 para 9,0 ºC entre os teores de 0,71 e 1,24% PC em MS dia-1 de concentrado.(AU)

The pastures of the Island of Marajó consist of low quality graminaceous plants, which are generally poor in protein and mineral content. Unbalanced diets associated with low quality pastures are responsible for latent, sub-clinical diseases and metabolic disorders in bovines which affect bone health, especially in periods such as pregnancy and lactation. The purpose of this study was to point out and to describe the radiographic bone changes of buffalos with low body index bred in extensive system and intended for slaughter on the Island of Marajó, Brazil.Materials, Methods & Results: Radiographic examinations of anatomical pieces were obtained from 34 animals of buffalo species, with no distinction of gender, age, or breed. The animals were selected among those that were in the stockyard waiting for slaughtering for the obtainment of the anatomical pieces. This study evaluated animal performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality of 36-month old Nellore steers finished in pastures (n = 10) and 20-month old Angus vs. Nellore bulls finished in feedlot (n = 10). Final body weight, carcass weight, characteristics, conformation and fat thickness, were higher (p < 0.001) for the Nellore steers than for Angus vs. Nellore bulls. Water losses during chilling (24hours, 4oC) were lower (p < 0.05) for Nellore steers than for the Angus vs. Nellore bulls. Muscle percentage on the 6th rib was higher (p < 0.05) for the Nellore steers than for Angus vs. Nellore bulls; while bone percentage was lower (p < 0.05) for Nellore steers. After 7 and 14 days of ageing, the L* meat value was higher for the Nellore steers than for the Angus vs. Nellore bulls; the L* meat value was similar (p > 0.05) throughout the ageing period for the Angus vs. Nellore bulls, but higher in meat from the Nellore steers (p < 0.05). Genetic group had no effect (p > 0.05) on meat a* value (redness). Likewise, ageing time had no effect on a* in both genetic groups, and genetic group had no effect (p > 0.05) on meat b* value (yellowness). On the other hand, b* was increased after day 7 of ageing for the bulls from the two genetic groups. Thawing and cooking losses were lower for Nellore steers after day 7 of aging (p < 0.05). The meat of the Angus vs. Nellore bulls was more tender (p < 0.05) at all ageing times studied (1, 4, 7 and 14 days) than the meat of the Nellore steers. Genetic group had no effect (p > 0.05) on lipid oxidation; however, lipid oxidation increased after day7. Meat from Nellore steers contained a higher percentage of saturated fatty acids (SFA), a lower percentage of unsaturated (UFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and a similar percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) than the meat from Angus vs. Nellore bulls.(AU)


Este estudo foi realizado para avaliar o desempenho animal, características de carcaça e qualidade da carne de novilhos Nelore terminados em pastagens e abatidos aos 36 meses de idade (n = 10) e machos não castrados Angus vs. Nelores abatidos aos 20 meses de idade (n = 10). O peso final, peso, características e conformação da carcaça e espessura de gordura de cobertura foram maiores (p < 0,001) para os novilhos Nelores do que para os mestiços Angus vs. Nelores. As perdas de água durante o resfriamento (24 horas, 4º C) foram menores (p < 0,05) para os novilhos Nelores do que para os mestiços Angus vs. Nelores. A percentagem de músculo na 6ª costela foi maior (p < 0,05) para os novilhos Nelores do que para os mestiços Angus vs. Nelores; enquanto que a percentagem de osso foi menor (p < 0,05) para os novilhos Nelores. Após 7 e 14 dias de maturação, o valor de L* da carne foi maior (p < 0,05) para os novilhos Nelores do que para os mestiços Angus vs. Nelores. O valor de L* foi similar (p > 0,05) ao longo da maturação para os mestiços Angus vs. Nelores; enquanto que o valor de L* da carne dos novilhos Nelores aumentou (p < 0,05). O grupo genético não teve efeito (p > 0,05) sobre o valor de a* (cor vermelha). Da mesma forma, o tempo de maturação não teve efeito (p > 0,05) para os animais dos dois grupos genéticos. O grupo genético não teve efeito (p > 0,05) sobre o valor de b* (cor amarela). Por outro lado, o tempo de maturação aumentou o valor de b* após o sétimo dia para os animais dos dois grupos genéticos. A perda por descongelamento e cocção foi menor (p < 0,05) para os novilhos Nelores após o sétimo dia de maturação. A carne dos mestiços Angus vs. Nelores foi mais macia (p < 0,05) em todos os tempos de maturação (1, 4, 7 e 14 dias) do que a carne dos novilhos Nelores. O grupo genético não teve efeito (p > 0,05) sobre a oxidação de lipídeos; no entanto, a oxidação de lipídeos aumentou após o sétimo dia.(AU)

Resumo

A rinotomia por acesso dorsal é utilizada principalmente no tratamento de tumores e outros distúrbios respiratórios, pois possibilita melhor visualização da anatomia nasal. Existem diferentes aparelhos para a realização da osteotomia para o acesso a cavidade nasal. O objetivo deste estudo é comparar a qualidade dos resultados entre duas técnicas de osteotomia e realizar uma análise sobre os efeitos dos instrumentos de perfuração piezelétricos e micro serra sagital. Foram realizadas 20 osteotomias na região nasal em cadáveres caninos, bilateralmente, avaliando-se o tempo de execução entre as duas técnicas, os danos térmicos causados na superfície óssea com o auxílio de uma câmera termográfica e a precisão de corte dos instrumentais através de microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados mostraram que não houve diferença no tempo de realização das osteotomias com os instrumentais utilizados. Verificou-se o aumento de temperatura na área cirúrgica durante a osteotomia com a micro serra sagital quando comparado ao instrumental piezoelétrico. Por meio de avaliação histopatológica, foi possível correlacionar os artefatos encontrados nas amostras da micro serra sagital com o aumento de temperatura em três bordas do retângulo maior, e, assim, associar a maiores lesões na superfície óssea. Esta correlação não foi identificada na piezocirurgia pois o aumento de temperatura não foi significativo em qualquer das bordas avaliadas. Em contraponto, na microscopia eletrônica de varredura não houve diferenças significativas que pudessem associar as áreas cirúrgicas de maior lesão óssea aos instrumentais. Conclui-se com os achados que ambos os instrumentais podem ser utilizados para osteotomia na região nasal, pois foi possível findar com êxito as osteotomias. Porém, o instrumental piezoelétrico proporcionou menor índice de aquecimento e de artefatos na superfície óssea.


Dorsal access rhinotomy is used mainly in cases of tumors and in the treatment of respiratory disorders, as it allows better visualization of the nasal anatomy. There are different devices for performing osteotomy to access the nasal cavity. The aim of this study is to compare the quality of results between two osteotomy techniques and to perform an analysis on the effects of piezoelectric drilling instruments and sagittal microsaws. Twenty osteotomies were performed in the nasal region in canine cadavers, bilaterally, evaluating the execution time between the two techniques, the thermal damage caused to the bone surface with the aid of a thermographic camera and the precision of the instruments' cutting through optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that there was no difference in the time to perform the osteotomies with the instruments used. There was an increase in temperature in the surgical bed in the osteotomy with the sagittal micro saw when compared to the piezoelectric instrument. Through histopathological evaluation, it was possible to correlate the artifacts found in the samples of the sagittal microsaw with the increase in temperature in three edges of the larger rectangle, and, thus, to be associated with greater lesions on the bone surface. This correlation was not identified in piezosurgery as the temperature increase was not significant in any of the evaluated edges. On the other hand, in scanning electron microscopy there were no significant differences that could associate the surgical areas with the greatest injury from bone fragments to instruments. It is concluded that the findings suggest that both instruments can be used for osteotomy in the nasal region, as it was possible to successfully complete the osteotomies. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar a utilização de diferentes granulometrias da farinha de mexilhão dourado (FMD) em substituição ao calcário calcítico como fonte de cálcio em dietas de frangos de corte aos 21 e 42 dias de idade, analisando seus efeitos sobre desempenho, parâmetros sanguíneos, qualidade óssea e rendimento de carcaça. Foram realizados dois experimentos com delineamento inteiramente casualizado. No primeiro experimento foram utilizados 1.100 frangos de corte machos, e, no segundo, 750 frangos de corte machos, contendo 5 tratamentos e 10 repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram em uma ração controle com calcário calcítico (381 m), e as demais com a FMD em diferentes granulometrias (302, 380, 451 e 549 m). Aos 20 e aos 40 dias, o sangue foi colhido para análise de parâmetros sanguíneos. As aves foram pesadas aos 21 e aos 42 dias para avaliação do desempenho, e os ossos (tíbia e fêmur) foram coletados para análise de qualidade óssea. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas (P>0,05) para o desempenho de 1 a 21 e de 21 a 42 dias ao substituir o calcário pela FMD. Houve resposta linear crescente para fosfatase alcalina (FA) (P=0,0048) aos 20 dias. Aos 40 dias, foi constatado efeito quadrático (P=0,032) para aspartato aminotransferase (AST), com valor mínimo de resposta na granulometria de 337 m, e efeito linear decrescente para o Ca (P=0,031). Além disso, a FMD 380 m obteve concentração menor (P=0,032) em comparação ao tratamento controle. Para os demais parâmetros sanguíneos (ALT, P e GGT) aos 20 e 40 dias de idade, não foram observadas diferenças (P>0,05). Para parâmetros ósseos aos 21 dias, verificou-se menor (P=0,0005) resistência óssea do fêmur para a FMD 451 m em comparação ao tratamento controle. Porém, aos 42 dias, não foi observada interferência (P>0,05) da FMD para fêmur ou tíbia. Aos 21 dias, para o fêmur, foi constatado efeito quadrático (P=0,032) no percentual de Ca, com o valor mínimo obtido em 427 m, e redução (P=0,017) no percentual de P. Ao comparar com o tratamento controle, houve menor percentual de Ca (P=0,068) e P (P=0,017) para a FMD 451 m no fêmur e maior (P=0,049) percentual de P para a tíbia na FMD 549 m. Aos 42 dias, não foram observadas diferenças (P>0,05) no percentual de Ca e P para fêmur ou tíbia, mas em comparação ao tratamento controle, houve redução (P=<0,0001) da matéria mineral (MM) para a FMD de 380, 451 e 549 m. O desempenho nas fases inicial, crescimento e final não foi afetado, assim como o rendimento de carcaça e cortes aos 42 dias não sofreu influência (P>0,05) das diferentes granulometrias da FMD em substituição ao calcário. Conclui-se que a FMD, independentemente da granulometria, não interfere significativamente no desempenho, rendimento de carcaça e cortes, parâmetros sanguíneos e qualidade óssea, sendo recomendada na dieta para frangos de corte de 1 a 21 e de 21 a 42 dias até a granulometria de 549 m (peneira de 8 mm), oferecendo destinação rentável ao molusco e reduzindo os custos de moagem e produção.


The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of different particle sizes of golden mussel meal (GMM) in replacement of limestone in broiler diets at 21 and 42 days of age on performance, blood parameters, bone quality and carcass yield. Two experiments have been carried out using a completely randomized design, as follows: in the first experiment, 1,100 male broilers were used and in the second, 750 male broilers, which were distributed in five treatments with 10 replications. The treatments consisted of a control diet using limestone (381 m) and GMM in different particle sizes (302, 380, 451 and 549 m). From 20 to 40 days, the blood samples were collected for serum parameters analysis. The performance was evaluated from 21 to 42 days and, after slaughter, bones (tibia and femur) samples were collected for bone quality analysis. No significant differences (P>0.05) were observed in performance from 1 to 21 and 21 to 42 days when limestone was replaced by GMM. There was an increasing linear response in alkaline phosphatase (AP) concentration (P=0.0048) at 20 days. At 40 days, were observed a quadratic effect (P=0.032) for aspartate aminotransferase (AST), with the minimum response value in the particle size of 337 m, and decreasing linear effect in Ca (P=0.031). In addition, the GMM 380 m (P=0.032) caused a lower concentration compared to the control diet. For the other blood parameters (ALT, P and GGT) measured at 20 and 40 days, no difference was observed (P>0.05). For quality bone parameters at 21 days, a reduction (P=0.0005) in femur bone strength was observed in the GMM 451 m compared to control diet. But at 42 days, no interference (P>0.05) for femur and for tibia was observed. At 21 days, for femur, a quadratic effect (P=0.032) was observed in Ca percentage, with the minimum response value in the particle size of 427 m, and a reduction (P=0.017) on P percentage. Compared to control diet, there were a lower percentage of Ca (P=0.068) and P (P=0.017) for GMM 451 m on femur and, on tibia, a greater (P=0.049) percentage of P for GMM 549 m. At 42 days, no differences (P>0.05) were observed for Ca and P percentage on femur and tibia, however, compared to control diet, there was a reduction (P=<0.0001) of mineral matter percentage of GMM using 380, 451 and 549 m. The performance during the initial, growing and final phases were not affected, as well as carcass and cut yields at 42 days were not affected (P>0.05) by different GMM particle sizes in limestone replacement. It was concluded that, regardless of the particle size used, GMM did not affect the performance, carcass and cuts yield, blood parameters and bone quality, and is therefore recommended in diets for broilers from 1 to 21 and 21 to 42 days of age up to particle sizes of 549 m (sieve 8 mm), ensuring a profitable destination for the mollusk and reducing grinding and production costs.

Bovine meat and bone meal (MBM) has been used as a low-cost protein source in corn- and soybean meal-based poultry diets. However, to date, no studies investigating the effect of the dietary inclusion of MBM on the performance of Japanese quails and on egg production costs were found in literature. In this study, 600 Japanese quails in lay were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design consisting of six treatments (replacement levels of soybean meal by MBM:0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5%) with five replicates of 20 birds each to investigate if MBM is a viable alternative to maintain or to improve the live and economic performances of these birds. Treatments consisted of a control diet, based on corn and soybean meal, with no inclusion of MBM, and diets formulated with increasing levels (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5%) of MBM inclusion at the expense of soybean meal. The studied parameters were evaluated in four periods of 28 days each. Live performance parameters (egg weight, g; average egg production, %; egg weight, g; feed intake, g; feed conversion ratio per egg mass, kg/kg and per dozen eggs, dz/kg; and livability, %); egg quality parameters (proportion of egg components, yolk, albumen, eggshell %; egg specific weight, g/cm3); and economic parameter (bio-economic nutritional index) were determined. Only egg weight, egg specific weight, and eggshell percentage were affected (p < 0.05) by the treatments. Our results show that inclusion of bovine meat and bone meal can be added to the diet of Japanese quails in lay, causing no performance losses and promoting feed cost savings up to 5.24%.
