ABSTRACT Purpose To evaluate the efficacy of hypertonic glucose (10%), alone or in combination with the corticoid dexamethasone, to prevent peritoneal adhesion following hysterectomy in rats. Methods Forty-two adult rats underwent hysterectomy with peritoneal lavage: G1 - glucose (10%); G2 - glucose (10%) and dexamethasone 3 mg·kg-1; and G3 - physiological saline (PS) 0.9%. Results In the macroscopic analysis after 14 days, G1 had a median score of 1, G2 of 1, and G3 of 2.5 (p < 0.0001), G3 compared to G1 and G2. There was no difference between groups after 28 days. In the microscopic analysis, the median vascular proliferation after 14 days was 2 for G1, 1 for G2, and 3 for G3 (p = 0.0037, G3 vs. G1 and G2). After 28 days, G1 showed a median vascular proliferation score of 2, G2 of 2.5, and G3 of 3 (p < 0.0001, G3 vs. G1 and G2). Regarding the inflammatory reaction after 14 days, G1 had a median score of 2, G2 of 1, and G3 of 3 (p = 0.7916). After 28 days, G1 had a median score of 0.5 (0-1.75), G2 of 1.5, and G3 of 2.5 (p < 0.0001, G3 vs. the others and G2 vs. G1). In the evaluation of fibrosis after 14 days, G1 had a median score of 1, G2 of 1, and G3 of 2.5 (p < 0.0001, G3 vs. G1and G2). After 28 days, G1 had a median fibrosis score of 1, G2: 2, and G3: 2.5 (p < 0.0001), G3 vs. the others andG2 vs. G1). Conclusions The use of hypertonic glucose (10%) solution seems to reduce macroscopic and microscopic pelvic adhesions.

Background: In dogs, bullous pemphigoid (BP) is a subepithelial autoimmune disease, a rare dermatopathy in the clinicalroutine. BP is characterized by formation of vesicles and subepidermal blisters that result from dissolution of the dermalepithelial junction. Clinical signs of BP usually include severe dermatological alterations with a variable prognosis. Theaim of this work is to report a case of BP in a dog to contribute information for diagnosis, and to present clinical andpathological aspects that emerge during development of BP.Case: An adult male mongrel dog exhibited hyperemic, exudative, crusty lesions on the lip commissure and periocularareas. Results from laboratory tests were normal. Results from parasitological and mycological tests on skin scrapingswere negative. Imprint cytology of the crusts revealed presence of gram-positive cocci bacteria. In the histopathologicalanalysis of punch biopsy material, the epidermis was detached from the dermis, leading to formation of vesicles. Therewere inflammatory infiltrates containing neutrophils, eosinophils, and high amounts of fibrin, and areas of multifocalorthokeratotic hyperkeratosis. Multifocal infiltrates containing lymphocytes, histiocytes, and plasma cells were observedon the superficial portions of the dermis, which indicated a diagnosis of BP. After the definitive clinical diagnosis, theanimal was treated with enrofloxacin (Baytril Flavour®; 5 mg/kg once a day for 10 days), and prednisolone (Prediderm®;2 mg/kg once a day until further instructions). On the follow-up visit, 15 days later, the clinical picture had improved, andthe lesions had decreased. Continuity of the treatment was prescribed, along with a gradual decrease in the corticoid dose. The dose of prednisolone was initially reduced to 1 mg/kg once a day, and later to 0.5 mg/kg until improvement of theclinical status of the patient. Remission of the lesions was observed 13 weeks later...

Background: Capillaria hepatica is a nematode, zoonotic, with worldwide distribution. The main hosts are rodents, nevertheless other mammals can be affected. Although the parasite has high affinity for the liver, it rarely causes a hepaticdisease in domestic animals and humans. The diagnosis is difficult and usually a biopsy is required. The treatment is difficult and is based in anti-helminthic and corticoid, but prevention is the best strategy against the disease. The aim of thepresent report is to describe a case of hepatic capillariosis in a dog approaching the clinical signs, diagnosis and therapeutic.Case: A 12-year-old Brazilian Terrier bitch, with a history of visit to the farm and regular hunting of rats, frogs, birds andother wild animals, was attended with hyporexia and apathy. At the physical exam the dog presented elevation of rectaltemperature, intense jaundice and abdominal pain. In the biochemical exams was noticed a slight increase in globulins anda sharp increase in alkaline phosphatase (AP), total, direct and indirect bilirubin, suggesting a liver injury. In the ultrasonographic exam, hepatomegaly with dispersed hyperechoic areas were observed, suggesting hepatic steatosis. The patientwas treated with ursodesoxicolic acid and S-adenosil metionin for 30 consecutive days, showing a clinic improvement. Two months after the end of the treatment the animal worsened, showing jaundice, ascites, motor incoordination, weakness, difficulty in food and water ingestion and changes in the mental state. In the complete blood count was observed amacrocytic hypochromic regenerative anemia, leukocytosis with neutrophilia and monocytosis and thrombocytopenia. In biochemical exams was detected decrease in creatinine and albumin and increase in alanine aminotransferase and AP,suggesting hepatopathy by biliary obstruction. There were performed exams for leishmania and ehrlichiosis that testednegative. In the ultrasonographic exam it...

Background: Feline eosinophilic keratoconjunctivitis is a proliferative eye lesion of chronic aspect with usually unilateralpresentation that may initiate as a superficial vascularization that evolves to a proliferative, granular, irregular lesion ofwhitish-pink aspect. With its association with an immune-mediated response, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories do notappear to be efficient, although few studies describe its use. This case report describes a case of a feline eosinophilic keratoconjunctivitis with its clinical evolution since the use of nonsteroidal topical anti-inflammatory drug in an undiagnosedpatient and the transition to a topical corticosteroid and cure after 14 days since diagnosis.Case: An 8-year-old female cat was attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Dom Bosco Catholic University (UCDB),with main complaint being an eye injury with at least 36 days of evolution and unresponsive to treatment (topical tobramycin 0.3% every 12 h / ketorolac trometamol 0.5%/ every 12 h and ophthalmic lubricant/every 4 h). Since the patienthad free access to the street, the owners suspected of trauma-induced lesion. At physical examination, it was observed aproliferative lesion at the peri-limbal superotemporal quadrant of the right cornea with approximately 0.4 cm diameter, with color varying of pale to pink, with irregular surface and low vascularity, the adjacent conjunctiva was also affectedwith similar multiple nodular lesions (0.1 cm). Fluorescein test was negative as well as FIV/FeLV immunochromatographytesting. Feline herpesvirus investigation was not possible. The patient was anesthetized and a lesion specimen was acquiredwith a cotton swab scraping and a fine needle aspiration. Cytology showed predominance of eosinophils and mast cells, with rare corneal epithelial cells, with smear background containing mast cell...

The objective of this work is to report a case of Discoid Lupus Erythematosus in a dog. In the case reported, the animal presented lesions with an erythematous, scaly and ulcerated aspect, in the nasal region, on the lips and gums, perianal region and in the caudal abdominal region. The confirmatory diagnosis of the disease was performed by means of histopathological examination. As treatment, prednisolone-based corticosteroids were administered at a dose of 2mg / kg, BID, for 10 days, then the dose was reduced to 1mg / kg, BID, for another 10 days and then 1mg / kg, every other day, as well. solar restriction was recommended. The animal responded positively to the treatment instituted with a significant improvement in the clinical signs presented. However, it should be noted that the therapy instituted for the purpose of control, as as already mentioned, there is no definitive cure for the disease.

The induction of labor aims to concentrate births to follow up better the parturient and the first care to the neonates. However, even if the labor induction technique with dexamethasone administration has been successfully described since the late 1970s, few studies report the technique of birth development and neonatal vitality in Santa Inês sheep. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of dexamethasone use in two doses (8 and 16mg) in labor induction of Santa Inês ewes at 145 days of gestation and to evaluate its effects on the birth characteristics. In this study, 58 ewes were used, raised in an extensive system in the experimental farms of UFBA, with confirmation pregnancy after fixed-time artificial insemination or controlled breeding. These female ewes were separated into three groups according to the dose of dexamethasone administered (G1 = 0mg, G2 = 8mg, and G3 = 16mg). From these births, 79 lambs were born. This study analyzed the period from induction of labor to birth, fetal presentation at birth, the weight of the placenta, and the period for placenta expulsion. The data were analyzed by the Statistical Analysis System (SAS v.9.1.3®, 2002), and the significance level considered for all analyzes was 5%. Births of induced groups occurred on average at 48.4±22.17 hours after induction, while the females with non-induced labor gave birth 131.96±41.9 hours on average after the placebo application (P<0.05), confirming the efficiency of both doses for induction of labor. The period from induction to birth did not differ (P>0.05) between the doses used. There were no differences in delivery about the fetal static relation, time to placental attachment, and weight. With this study, it can be concluded that the induction at 145 days of gestation with eight or 16mg of dexamethasone is a useful technique and does not alter the labor in Santa Inês sheep.(AU)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the lung maturity of premature and full-term lambs by analyzing amniotic fluid using the following methods: Clements test, Nile blue cytology test, hematoxylin-Shorr stain, lamellar body count, and radiographic tests. The use of these methods is intended to identify high-risk newborns and provide immediate clinical intervention after birth. Altogether, 56 animals (24 ewes and 32 lambs) were included in the study and divided into 3 groups. Group I consisted of 8 ewes that were at approximately 145 days of gestation; this group delivered 10 lambs naturally. Group II consisted of 8 ewes that were at 138 days' gestation; this group delivered 11 lambs by cesarean section. Group III consisted of 8 ewes at 138 days' gestation; this group was administered intramuscular dexamethasone (16mg/animal) 36 hours prior to a cesarean section. Group III delivered11 lambs. Cytological tests were performed using a microscope with a maximum magnification of 1000x, while the Clements test was visually observed by one of the researchers. Amnioticfluid lamellar body counts were measured using transmission electron microscopy. Among the staining methods, hematoxylin-Shorr was reliable, and Group III had a greater number of orangeophilic cells when compared to Group II, probably due to corticoid administration. The Clements test showed pulmonary maturity in approximately 20% of Group I lambs and Group II showed 9.1% of bubbles; however, Group III had the highest pulmonary maturity percentage (36.4%). The lamellar bodies were measured, and all groups had sizes between 0.019 and 0.590μm. Radiographic evaluation revealed that the majority of lambs presented some level of pulmonary radiodensity, indicating an acinar pattern at birth. These results are in line with the expectations of each group. We found that the normal group showed greater pulmonary maturity, whereas Group II presented pulmonary immaturity, which is expected because this group comprised lambs born prematurely and Group III showed pulmonary maturity almost comparable to the normal delivery group (Group I). This is due to the fact that although these animals are premature, the use of dexamethasone helped in pulmonary maturation. Therefore, these pulmonary maturity tests are considered effective when more than one technique is used and can be used routinely in the care of a pregnant ewe in labor, where a simple collection of amniotic fluid can predict a high-risk pregnancy and alert the veterinarian if the newborn needs intensive supportive treatment.(AU)

The skin affections are of great importance in the small animal clinic, corresponding to a large percentage of the cases attended in the clinical routine. The most frequent dermatopathies are allergic dermatitis to ectoparasite bite, cutaneous neoplasm, bacterial pyoderma, seborrhea, allergic dermatitis, parasitic dermatitis and immune mediated dermatoses. However, allergic dermatitis is the most commonly treated with corticosteroids. The objective of the study was to verify the presence of side effects evaluated by the clinical and laboratory evaluation method in dogs with dermatopathies treated with prednisone in an anti-inflammatory dose. For this, 11 dogs were used that had some allergic dermatopathy. All of these patients underwent prednisone therapy for 20 days at doses of 0,25 mg/kg/BID/5 dias, 0,25mg/kg/Sid/5 dias e 0,25 mg/kg/EDA/10 dias. Laboratory tests (hemogram, biochemicals of renal function, liverfunction and lesion, glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, urinalysis, UPC and systemic arterial pressure) were done at two moments (before and after treatment). After analyzing the results, no statistical changes related to the use of corticosteroids were observed between the two moments studied. Therefore, it is concluded that the absence of alterations may suggest that the dose and the time of treatment were safe, but studies with the use of prednisone at higher doses, with longer periods and with a greater number of animals, should be performed in order to demonstrate the relationship of corticoid therapy with side effects.

Background: Corticosteroid responsive tremor syndrome is an immune-mediated disorder that primarily affects smalldogs aged 1 to 5 years. It is manifested by generalized tremors of high frequency and low amplitude, with involvement ofhead, trunk and limbs. The diagnosis is based on history, clinical signs and laboratory tests to rule out other conditions, aswell as on the response to corticosteroid treatment. The aim of the present study was to report a case of a female dog withcorticosteroid responsive tremor syndrome that began after estrus.Case: A 1-year-old, undetermined dog, weighing 4.9 kg, was attended at the Veterinary Hospital of Uberaba, with generalized tremors that impaired her walking and feeding. The picture had an acute onset, there was no history of intoxication, trauma, but the animal had an organophosphate-based collar. The bitch was not castrated and had been in heat fora month. In the clinical evaluation, it was observed that besides the tremors, the dog had hypermetria and hyperthermia.Suspected adverse reaction to organophosphorus or encephalitis. The collar was removed from the animal. Hemogram, serum biochemistry, analysis and culture of cerebrospinal fluid and test for distemper were performed. The hemogramwas leukopenia due to lymphopenia. No alterations were observed in serum biochemistry CSF culture and the distempertest were negative. The CSF analyte revealed pleocytosis with predominantly lymphocytes, density and glucose increasedslightly. The diagnosis of encephalitis of inflammatory etiology was established. Treatment with prednisone and diazepamwas performed. Clinical signs improved after seven days of therapy. Approximately one and a half years after the initialclinical picture, the animal presented recurrence of the tremors associated with estrus again. The same treatment was instituted and the dog underwent ovariohysterectomy. There was no relapse of the clinical...

A 3 year-old mare, Arab, that belongs to the experimental herd of FMVZ-USP presented cutaneous tumor lesions on right and left posterior limb with approximately one year of evolution. A new formation with rapid growth was observed on the neck region, and since then, the limbs lesion gained inflammatory characteristics. Aspirative punction was performed on the neck formation in order to submit the sample to cytological analyses, in which eosinophilic infiltrate was identified. At this point, a conservative approach was chosen with three consecutive corticoid infiltrations. With lack of success of infiltrative therapy, neck, right and left posterior limbs lesions were surgically removed. The materials obtained from surgical procedures were sent to histophatological and immunohistrochemical evaluation that confirmed cutaneous mastocytoma diagnosis. The mare was discharged after all surgical wound were healed and after full remission of clinical signs, and did not show relapses or any other complication from tumor lesions. Some cutaneous tumors are well described and commonly occur in horses, such as sarcoids, melanoma, papilloma and squamous cell carcinoma. Cutaneous mastocytoma is considered a rare cutaneous tumor in this species. According to literature, equine mastocytoma do not have breed predilection, however, some authors mention a greater involvement in Purebreed Arabian horses. In order to establish a definitive diagnosis, it is important to associate physical exams to histophatological an immunohistochemical evaluation and, even though rare in horses, this neoplasm must be considered as a differential diagnosis.(AU)
