Feline demodicosis caused by Demodex cati is a rare parasitic disease, characterized by local or generalized dermatitis and less commonly by otitis. A feline, male, castrated, mixed breed, 11 years old, presented progressive cervical pruritus with alopecia in the caudolateral region of the right ear and mild erythema, abrasions, brownish ceruminous secretion and otopodal reflex. He had a history of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection and feline gingivitis stomatitis complex (GSC), in addition to continuous use of prednisolone. In the parasitological examination of the cerumen, different stages of Demodex sp. were found. Genetic sequencing revealed 99.33% homology for D. cati. Therapy with imidacloprid and moxidectin in spot-on formulation, in two doses at 30-day intervals, promoted remission of clinical signs and elimination of the mite.

Parasitic otitis in cattle is normally caused by nematodes of the genus Rhabditis spp. and is a common problem in Gir breed. Parasitic otitis can cause premature culling and even death of animals. Despite its importance, there is no effective standardized treatment protocol for this condition. The objective of this study was to evaluate two treatments for parasitic otitis caused by Rhabditis spp. in Gir cattle. The external left ear of the animals was washed with 2% boricated alcohol, while the right ear received topical application of Triclorfon, allantoin and zinc oxide paste. The treatments were performed weekly in the first month and monthly over the next two months. Monthly, the ears of all animals were washed under pressure with a physiological solution before treatment. The recovered solution was analyzed, and the number of nematodes counted. Neither treatment was effective in reducing the number of nematodes recovered or the otitis score, but weekly treatment seemed more promising, independent of the drug used.

The study evaluated and compared macro- and microscopic changes in the auricular cartilage of rabbits, cattle, and pigs following exhumation at different postmortem intervals (PMI). Eight samples corresponding to 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 150 days after exhumation were obtained from all rabbit ears, and twelve samples corresponding to 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 50, 60, and 150 days after exhumation were obtained from all cattle and pig ears. The weight loss of the rabbit ear samples remained higher than that of the cattle and pig ear samples at all PMIs. At 60 days, the average weight loss of cattle and pig ear samples did not differ significantly (p>0.05). The loss of area of the samples was similar among the three species at most PMIs (p>0.05). At 150 days, all cattle samples were completely decomposed, unlike the pig and rabbit samples. Microscopic analysis of the cartilage tinctorial affinity and loss of chondrocyte nuclei and tissue architecture demonstrated the worsening of postmortem changes over time, regardless of the animal species. Colonization by fungi and bacteria occurred earlier in the cattle and pig samples. The correlation of time with sample weight loss and cartilage thickness was strong, indicating the potential of these variables as parameters for PMI estimation. Therefore, postmortem examination of auricular cartilage can be used to estimate PMI.(AU)

The external ear extends from the pinna to the tympanic membrane, where it is supported and shaped by an arrangement of cartilages including the conchal, annular, scutiform, and external acoustic meatus. Environmental exposure can often lead to diseases of the external ear canal in animals. In horses, otitis primarily occurs due to infestation by ectoparasites, promoting local inflammation and infection. Chronic conditions can result in ear deformation, including auricular canal stenosis. While operative techniques for treating auricular stenosis are known, they are limited to companion animals, with few reports on horses. This study aimed to describe the modified lateral resection technique of the ear canal, which is commonly performed in small animals, for treating auricular canal stenosis in six horses. As a methodology, the intertragic notch was used as a reference for the incision due to species disparity. The ear canal cartilage was dissected, followed by resection of the lateral wall and the cartilaginous flap adhered to the skin. Excess skin was removed, and the ear canal was sutured to the skin with nylon thread. Our results indicated a significant improvement in the treatment of otitis in the treated horses, demonstrating a favorable evolution in the healing process and resolution of bacterial infections in all cases. In conclusion, the use of the modified lateral resection technique of the ear canal was successful in all six treated horses, providing access to clinical treatment of the canal without any occurrences of recurrence or postoperative complications

The combination of surgical techniques of total ear canal ablation combined with lateral bulla osteotomy (TECA-LBO) are considered the gold standard surgical treatment for dogs and cats with ear neoplasia, cholesteatoma, severe trauma to the ear canal, and chronic external otitis with concomitant otitis media unresponsive to medical treatment. The aim is the complete removal of the ear canal and ear epithelium of the tympanic bulla. This case report describes the clinical presentation, surgical treatment and prognosis of a female Cocker Spaniel, 9 years old, presenting a sebaceous gland carcinoma in the ear canal with a fast and aggressive evolution, associated with extensive mammary neoplasia. The patient was treated with total ablation of the ear canal (TECA) and osteotomy of the right lateral bulla (LBO), followed by mastectomy and ovariohysterectomy. The method used as treatment provided excellent results, with no reports or visualization of neurological sequelae and complications from the surgery in the patient to date.

Background: Otitis in farm animals' compromises health and well-being, leading to economic losses, risk of herd infection and poor performance. In sheep, otitis is usually of bacterial or parasitic origin. Surgical treatment is routinely used in small animal practice, and it is also reported in the horses. Nevertheless, corrective surgery is considered an adjuvant to conservative therapy. Herein, we report the successful outcome in a case of otitis in sheep treated surgically by the technique of resection of the lateral auditory canal (Zepp procedure). Case: A 4-year-old crossbred ewe weighing 43 kg was referred for hospital care. Anamnesis revealed the history of placing an identification earring approximately 90 days before in the affected ear, which was removed due to infection in the region. Physical evaluation was performed, revealing edema, fetid odor, purulent discharge, aural hematoma and pain when handling the right pinna. Neurological examination revealed moderate rotation of the head to the right side, but without signs of involvement of the vestibular system. Otological examination of the vertical auditory canal showed inflammation, wall fibrosis, complete obstruction and a purulent fistula in the inner part of the external ear, making it impossible to perform an otoscopic evaluation of the auditory canal. Conservative treatment by needle puncture was successful resolving the aural hematoma. Although otitis was refractory to 5-days of medical treatment (systemic antibiotics and topical wound cleaning). After this period, there was still otologic secretion and correct cleaning of the auditory canal was unfeasible due to the severe auditory canal narrowing. Therefore, surgical treatment by resection the lateral wall of the external auditory canal (Zepp technique) was performed. Both surgery and post-operatory period were uneventful, and there was complete healing with good aesthetic results. Hospital discharge occurred on the 18th day after surgery. The ewe was followed-up during 23-months after regress to the flock, and there was no otitis recurrence. Discussion: Probably, in the present case, the presence of contamination with inappropriate placement of the identification earring, promoted aural hematoma, infection and pruritus, favoring the stenosis of the external auditory canal and the chronicity of the otitis. Identification of sheep by earrings must comply with a series of recommendations, from the choice of the adequate earring to the follow-up after its placement. Clinical signs of external otitis in sheep may include head shaking, ear itching with attempts to scratch with the limbs, pain during ear handling, and excessive cerumen at the base of the ear canal, as observed on the sheep herein. Treatment of external otitis in sheep should start with a conservative approach through daily cleaning that may be combined with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory therapies. Surgical procedure is indicated in cases refractory to medical treatment, allowing adequate drainage and ventilation of the auditory canal. In the sheep herein, final outcome was considered good, considering the absence of surgical site infection, dehiscence and recurrence. Thus, we concluded that the technique of resection of the lateral auditory canal (Zepp procedure) was effective in the sheep of this report, and may be a good alternative for the treatment of chronic otitis in sheep.

It is estimated that external otitis accounts for 2 to 10% of attendances at to the feline clinics, corresponding to a clinically challenging condition in this species. This work aims to carry out a retrospective survey of the occurrence of otopathies in cats in the city of Fortaleza/Ce in a period of 3 years, contributing to the establishment of the epidemiological profile of the region. The study was carried out through the co-participation of veterinarians, dermatologists and feline clinicians, and was elaborated retrospectively by evaluating clinical records of cats with a history of ear diseases. The data showed a higher frequency of otitis associated with infectious causes, with 30% of cats affected by the yeast Malassezia spp., 17% by coccus-type bacteria, and 1% by the dimorphic fungus Sporothix schencki, followed by otitis of parasitic origin caused by the mites Otodectes cynotis and Notoedres cati, corresponding to 18% and 2% of the studied animals, respectively. In the association between pathogens, the highest incidence corresponded to mixed infection by fungi and bacteria (17%). Regarding the breeds, SRD presented a higher overall frequency in the study, and male cats were more affected than females. Therefore, the importance of retrospective studies for single health is emphasized, based on the establishment of the epidemiological profile of the region and the identification of potential zoonotic agents.

Canine atopic dermatitis (cAD) is a worldwide allergic skin disease. The affected dog population can show different clinical patterns according to geographic region, and a lack of studies in Brazil is observed. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the clinical and epidemiological data of cAD in dogs treated in a private clinical practice in Fortaleza, a city located in the Northeast Region of Brazil. cAD was diagnosed in 35% of dogs, being Shih-tzu and Poodle the most affected breeds. Paws and ears were frequently injured sites. Almost 50% of atopic dogs were diagnosed with superficial pyoderma and 36% with cutaneous malasseziosis. Atopic dogs with outdoor habits were less likely to develop cutaneous malassezial infection, and with routine ear, cleaning habits were less likely to develop bacterial otitis externa. In conclusion, canine atopic dermatitis is a prevalent disease in private clinical practice in Fortaleza, and lifestyle habits can be considered a risk factor for cutaneous malasseziosis infection and bacterial otitis externa in atopic dogs.

Aural cholesteatoma is an epidermoid cyst filled with squamous material with keratinotic content that develops in the middle ear. The etiopathogenesis is not fully understood, but it is inferred that it is a rare complication of chronic otitis media or external. Thus, it is an uncommon condition and, therefore, little reported in dogs. Imaging tests, especially computed tomography, are important tools for the diagnostic approach. However, the confirmation of aural cholesteatoma is given through histopathological evaluation. The main therapeutic modality for this condition is the surgical removal of the lesion. Thus, this study aimed to describe a case of aural cholesteatoma in a bitch with a history of recurrent otitis. Clinical and computed tomography findings allowed for therapeutic and diagnostic planning. Therefore, the ablation of the left ear canal and the ventral osteotomy of the tympanic bulla were performed. The surgery allowed the collection of material for the histopathological examination, which determined cholesteatoma aural. The treatment allowed the complete remission of clinical signs and the definitive resolution of the recurrent otitis.

Otitis externa is one of the most frequent diseases in the clinical routine of dogs and cats, and they can be caused by several associated factors. Due to incorrect use of antimicrobial products, the treatment and control of otitis have become challenging. This study aims to analyze the results of otological exams at the Laboratory of Microbiology HV-ULBRA in 2020 and demonstrate the profile of patients and isolated bacteria. Staphylococcus was the main genus isolated, and 71,11% of samples showed multi-drug resistance to antimicrobial testing. These results indicate the need to use complementary examinations to control otitis externa.(AU)

Background: The diagnostic of neoplasia in dogs has risen significantly in the last years and this fact is mostly attributed to the longer life expectancy of these animals, which contributes to a greater chance of exposure to carcinogenic agents. In between the diverse tumors that could compromise skin, the mastocytoma is the third most commonly diagnosed neoplasia. It is characterized by being a form of neoplasia with round cells, these being the mast cells. The objective of the present study consisted in relating a case of cutaneous mastocytoma in a 7-year-old bitch mixed-breed treated at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of the University of Uberaba (UNIUBE) - Uberaba, MG, Brazil. Case: The bitch initially presented a localized nodule external to the right ear pinna with cytology test suggesting a mastocytoma. The nodule was surgically removed and, posteriorly, an histopatholgy was not requested. After 5 months since the emergence of the nodule and a month after its surgical resection, the tutor noticed the presence of a new growth in the ipsilateral cervical region to the previous nodule. At this moment, the responsible veterinarian decided to refer the animal to an oncologist. During the appointment with the oncologist, alterations such as hyporexia and anemia were related, and the presence of a nodule in the right cervical region measuring 4.5 to 4 cm of diameter was verified. Material for cytologic evaluation of the neoplasia was collected and again the result suggested a mastocytoma. The new tumor was also surgically removed but was then referred to histopathological evaluation for diagnostic confirmation, grading and evaluation of surgical margins. The tumor was classified as an infiltrative subcutaneous mastocytoma presenting, additionally, compromised surgical margins. After its excision, the association with a chemotherapy treatment using a protocol of Vimblastina 2 mg/m², i.v. in unique dosage per section, associated with Predinisona 1 mg/kg, v.o, SID was indicated. Each section was realized with an interval of 7 days in between. Only 2 chemotherapy sessions took place. Because of the worsening of the clinical condition associated with a very weakened animal the veterinarian opted for the euthanasia of the animal. Discussion: The diagnostic of mastocytoma must be realized through the association of cytology and histopathology, in case histopathological evaluation is needed to confirm the obtained cytology result, to grade the tumor and to evaluate the compromising of surgical margins. In this sense, it was observed that the bitch was submitted only to cytology diagnostic when it presented the nodule in the ear pavilion. Yet, at the second approach realized by the oncologist, it was possible to realize adequate diagnose methods. However, the animal was not submitted to clinical staging of the mastocytoma due to the non-authorization of the exam by the tutor. Such measure is very important, as it reflects directly in the treatment and prognostic of the animal. Thus, image exams such as abdominal ultrasonography and chest X-ray should have been realized, as well as cytological and histopathological evaluation of the regional lymph nodes, in order to search for metastasis points in these places. As the data suggests, the importance of clinical staging of animals affected by this neoplasia and the importance of cytological evaluation associated with histopathology for a correct diagnosis, prognosis and mastocytoma treatment is noted. It is emphasized that many times veterinarians face impediment related to requesting all necessary exams coming from tutors, which compromises treatment success.

Skin and cartilage have been the main source for the recovery of somatic cells to be used in conservation strategies in wild mammals. In this sense, an important step for the cryopreservation of these samples is to recognize the properties of the skin and cartilage. Thus, knowing that the skin may differ among species and aiming to contribute to the establishment of cryobanks, the study examined the differences in the ear skin and cartilage of wild rodents from South America, agouti (Dasyprocta leporina) and spix's yellow-toothed cavy (Galea spixii). Ultrastructural and quantitative methods were used to measure skin and cartilage thickness, density of collagen and elastic fibers, cell type number and distribution, and proliferative activity. Although ultrastructural analysis revealed a similar pattern between species, morphometric analysis of the skin and cartilage showed differences between agoutis and cavies regarding thickness of epidermis layers (corneum: 5.3±2.5μm vs. 3.9±0.6μm; intermediate: 16.4±6.2μm vs. 23.4±8.1μm; basal: 9.9±2.1μm vs. 4.8±0.5μm), dermis (183.1±44.0μm vs. 258.2±22.9μm), total skin (211.8±46.0μm vs. 290.3±23.7μm) and perichondrium (27.6±6.1μm vs. 10.5±1.8μm). A greater number of epidermal cells (61.7±15.2 vs. 24.8±7.6) and chondrocytes (32.7±9.0 vs. 27.5±4.7) were observed in agouti, while the cavy presented a greater number of melanocytes (12.6±4.7 vs. 29.9±6.2), keratinocytes (14.7±4.2 vs. 29.8±7.6), and fibroblasts (103.6±24.7 vs. 112.2±11.3). Moreover, a higher percentage of collagen fibers and proliferative activity was observed in the skin of cavies, when compared to the skin of agoutis. Therefore, there are differences between agouti and cavy for ear skin and cartilage, requiring the establishment of species-specific cryopreservation protocols.(AU)

Background: Otitis is a severe inflammation of the skin of the auditory canal which can impact animals of all ages. Insheep, this disease can occur in isolated cases or in the entire flock. Laser photobiomodulation can be used in combination with medication or as single therapy and the effects are analgesia, modulation of the inflammatory process, edemareduction, tissue restoration and stimulation of local microcirculation. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy stands out asa promising alternative to antimicrobial drugs for the treatment of localized infections. This study aimed to report the useof laser phototherapies on a sheep with bacterial otitis.Case: A case of bacterial otitis in a 4-year-old sheep, Dorper, was treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the State Universityof Santa Cruz. In the anamnesis, the owner reported that the patient presented crusts in the auricular pavilions, and hadbeen medicated with oxytetracycline 20%, administered intramuscularly, for two days and the crusts cleaned with iodine10%, but the animal did not present clinical improvement. On physical examination, the animal presented constant headswaying, edema of the ears, otalgia, enlarged parotid lymph nodes and ear wounds. No ear discharge was observed, andthe initial diagnosis was aural hematoma. The treatment prescribed was laser photobiomodulation for three consecutivedays. The lesions were irradiated with a diode laser with a power of 0.1 W, irradiance of 3.5 W/cm2, continuous emission, spot area of 0.028 cm2, wavelength of 808 nm, energy of 4J/point, and fluency/point of 142.8J/cm2, with seven pointson the external surface and four points on the internal surface of both ears. Two points were also targeted on the parotidlymph nodes with infrared laser (λ = 808 nm), with energy of 2J/point. On the fourth day of hospitalization, there was areduction in lesions, decreased edema and absence of pain and on the sixth day...

Canine otitis externa is a disease that affects the external acoustic meatus of about 20% of dogs at some point in life, without predilection for race, age, or sex. It is a multifactorial disease whose etiology involves several microorganisms, detaching Staphylococcus aureus. Antimicrobials are the basis for treating this illness; however, due to the increase in antimicrobial resistance, conventional drugs have become ineffective, requiring the search for alternative therapies. In this context, essential oils (EOs) have great therapeutic potential due to their broad antimicrobial action. This study aimed to evaluate the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) in order to measure the MIC50 and MIC90 of gentamicin and EOs of Eugenia caryophyllata, Thymus vulgaris, Cymbopogon winterianus, Cymbopogon citratus, and Cinnamomum cassia against 62 Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from the external acoustic meatus of dogs. All EOs showed antibacterial action against the studied microorganisms, and their MIC50 and MIC90 were as follows: Eugenia caryophyllata, 2.42 mg mL-1 and 7.25 mg mL-1; Thymus vulgaris, 9.51 mg mL-1 and 22.94 mg mL-1; Cymbopogon winterianus, 26.78 mg mL-1 and 157.79 mg mL-1; Cinnamomum cassia and Cymbopogon citratus, lower than 16.48 and 27.81 mg mL-1, with the same MIC for all isolates. The MIC50 and MIC90 found for gentamicin were 1µg mL-1 and 8 µg mL-1. The MIC range found to antibiotic in this assay was 0.5 µg mL-1 to 128 µg mL-1, and the isolates were classified as susceptible [48 strains (77.41%) - MIC range of 0.5-4.0 µg mL-1], intermediate [eight strains (12.90%) - (MIC = 8.0 µg mL-1], or resistant [six strains (9.68%) - MIC ≥ 16 µg mL-1]. The results, according to the in vitro assays, showed that resistance to gentamicin, one of the antimicrobials most commonly used to treat canine otitis, is present in the Staphylococcus aureus population evaluated. Additionally, the tested EOs have great potential for therapeutic use, however future studies should be carried out to evaluate their in vivo efficacy.(AU)

Background: Otitis is a frequent condition in dogs, with a multifactorial etiology covering primary causes, predisposing and perpetuating factors. It is characterized by an inflammatory process of structures that make up the auditory system, with prevalence data ranging from 15 to 20%, which can occur in any age group and without sex predisposition. According to the location, it can be classified as uni or bilateral, affecting the outer, middle and / or inner ear, the latter two being associated with neurological changes such as vestibulopathy, facial nerve paresis and Horner's syndrome. The morbidity and mortality of otitis media and internal may increase with delay in diagnosis, resulting in delay in the correct treatment, and the extension to brainstem is described in felines and considered rare in dogs. The present study aims to report an atypical case of otitis media and internal, with extension to the brain parenchyma in a brachycephalic dog. Case: A 3-year-old bitch French Bulldog was seen, weighing 12 kg, with a history of vomiting, apathy, nystagmus, ataxia and acute evolution hemiparesis. As a result of adoption, it was not known about the animal's morbid past. On special physical and clinical examination, depressed mental status, changes in postural reactions, nostril stenosis with unilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge, corneal ulcer, palpebral and labial ptosis, absence of eyelid reflex and spontaneous strabismus were observed, all of these findings observed on the left side of the face. No signs of otitis external to otoscopy were found. The clinical signs found characterize left facial nerve paresis and peripheral and central vestibulopathy. Otitis media / internal and meningoencephalitis were suspected. Hemogram, serum biochemistry (glucose, urea, creatinine, alanine aminotransferase, total proteins, albumin, globulin, alkaline phosphatase, gamma glutamyltransferase, phosphorus, total bilirubin, cholesterol and total calcium), urinalysis, rapid tests for erlichiosis, anaplasms , borreliosis, heartworm, distemper and leishmaniasis, CSF analysis, neurological panel performed by PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) that tested the animal for Bartonellosis, Lyme Disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), Blastomyces dermatitidis, Cryptococcus sp., Virus West Nile, Distemper, Toxoplasmosis, Neosporose and Coccidioides sp. using conjunctival swab, whole blood, urine and CSF samples. The samples were negative for all of these tests. As an image exam, brain magnetic resonance was performed. In the latter, otitis media and left internal was observed with extension of the lesion to the brain parenchyma. CSF analysis showed cytological changes compatible with a non-suppurative inflammatory process, mild pleocytosis with predominantly mononuclear leukocyte infiltrate. As a form of treatment, antibiotic therapy and total ablation of the auditory canal with lateral bulectomy were performed, showing good results with reduced clinical symptoms. Discussion: It is concluded that although the diagnosis of otitis media and internal with extension to brainstem is more common in cats, it should be included as a differential for central vestibular disorders in dogs, and that the diagnosis together with early and effective treatment are important, since that the evolution of the infection to the central nervous system represents a risk to the patient.

With a view to reducing stress and discomfort and improving the practicality of making temperature measurements on cats, the aim of this study was to evaluate the use of a tympanic infrared thermometer (TIT), which is an easy-to-use device for measuring temperatures quickly, comfortably and more hygienically. For this, were selected 120 domestic cats living in Sousa, Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. Among them, 100 were normothermic, ten were hypothermic and ten were hyperthermic. None of them had any clinical signs of external or internal otitis. The measurements using the digital thermometer were higher than those using the TIT (P < 0.05), in the normothermic and hyperthermic cats. In the hypothermic cats, there was no difference (P ≥ 0.05) in mean values from the three types of thermometer. The values obtained using the mercury thermometer did not differ (P ≥ 0.05) from the values obtained using the other thermometers. There was a strong positive correlation in almost all the evaluations between the three thermometers, except for digital versus TIT for hyperthermic cats (r < 0.75). Because of the discrepancy between the values obtained by the TIT and the digital rectal thermometer, we suggest that further studies should be carried out in order to establish a temperature correction table for the TIT, so that it can be better used in veterinary medicine.
