The weed seed bank causes damage to agriculture, due to competition with cultivated plants and raising production costs, Cenchrus echinatushas a high seed multiplication and dissemination mechanism and Conyzabonariensisglyphosate resistance mechanism. The objective was to evaluate the potential of Menthaarvensisessential oil by means of fumigation in the weed seed bank. Soil samples (2 kg per treatment) were collected, homogenized and subjected to fumigation for 24 and 48 hours at concentrations of 2.5% and 5.0% of essential oil. The soil was solarized (control) and dried in the shade for three days as a witness. Then, 500 g of soil were distributed in four trays in a completely randomized design, where they received irrigation, identification and registration of emerging seedlings. Data were checked for normality and homogeneity of variance, transformed when necessary and submitted to analysis of variance at a 5% significance level. The averages were performed by Tukey and Dunnet tests at 5% probability. It was concluded that fumigation reduced grass and horseweed emergence regardless of dose and exposure time, with results similar to solarization.(AU)

The growth of generations of the Genomar Supreme Tilapia (GST) strain, specifically G20 and G25, was evaluated. Tilapias 8 g were reared in a recirculating aquaculture system with 0.25 m³ tanks, 80 fish m-³, with four replicates. During growth, eight fish from each tank were weighed and measured at day 1, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180 and 210. Survival, weight gain, feed conversion and batch homogeneity were determined. Weight-age data were fit to Gompertz model. In addition, absolute and relative growth rates and weight and age at inflection were determined. Final weight showed 26.7% higher in G25 when compared to G20 (920.05 and 725.87 g, respectively). The feed conversion and homogeneity indexes were better in G25 than G20. The estimate of asymptotic weight was higher in G25 (1202.0 g) when compared to G20 (912.7 g). G20 presented smaller weight (335.76 g), age (108.87 days) and absolute growth rate (4.87 g day-1) when compared with G25 (442.19 g, 113.77 days and 6.41 g day-1). Carcass characteristics were similar, but G25 presented about 25% higher fillet weight than G20. After five years in the GST breeding program, results indicated that a sustained improvement of harvest weight was achieved, as well as 6 to 10% gain in performance by generation.(AU)

Reference materials (RM) are tools used in the comparability and traceability of measurements. They are widely used by laboratories for method validation and quality control of assay. Chile must evaluate theperformance of laboratories that analyzing metals in fishery products, despite RM have high prices and are scarce. For that reason, a RM in a hydrobiological product was developed. Reference values for arsenic and cadmium elements for a fishmeal were assigned. The measurement methods for characterization of the material were Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, Atomic Absorption Spectrometry and Neutron Activation Analysis. Reference values with their expanded uncertainty (U) were established for arsenic 2.64 ± 0.42 mg/kg (U; k = 2) and for cadmium 0.86 ± 0.16 mg/kg (U; k = 2). Homogeneity and stability of the RM allowed its use in a proficiency test for eleven food control laboratories. Results for median were 2.114 mg/kg for arsenic, and 0.863 mg/kg for cadmium. The performance values of the participants were evaluated with a z score obtaining 60% satisfaction for arsenic and 73% for cadmium. The material demonstrated to be suitable for use in interlaboratory proficiency assay. Abstract Despite the epidemiological importance of the Lymnaeidae family regarding transmission of Fasciola hepatica, knowledge about the diversity and distribution of these molluscs and the role of each species in the expansion of fasciolosis remains sparse. Classical morphological (n=10) identification was performed in lymneids from Lagoa Santa, a municipality in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, along with molecular and phylogenetic analysis (n=05) based on the partial nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI mtDNA) and ribosomal internal transcribed spacer II (ITS-2 rDNA). The shell morphology made it possible to distinguish the lymneids of Lagoa Santa from Pseudosuccinea columella. Differences found in the penile complex and prostate shape allowed this species to be distinguished from Galba truncatula. However, the homogeneity of reproductive tract characteristics among Lymnaea (Galba) cubensis, L. viator and L. neotropica confirmed that these characteristics show low taxonomic reliability for identifying cryptic species. Genetic divergence analysis for the COI mtDNA gene and ITS-2 region of rDNA revealed greater similarity to Lymnaea (Galba) cubensis. Thus, correct species differentiation is important for monitoring the epidemiological risk of fasciolosis in the state of Minas Gerais, where cases of the disease have increased over recent years.

The aim of this study was to assess the applicability of ARFI elastography for the complementary diagnosis of canine prostatic alterations. Twenty-two healthy dogs and 45 with prostatic alterations were diagnosed by the association of general and specific physical exams. Complete blood count, B-mode and Doppler ultrasound were performed. For the elastography study, tissue homogeneity and deformity were verified using the elastogram, and the shear velocities of the left and right lobes of all prostates were obtained. The change in tissue homogeneity was observed in 62.2% of the animals, while the shear speed was significantly higher in dogs with prostatic alterations, with a cut-off point > 2.35m/s as an indication of change. All animals in both groups were non-deformable. It was concluded that ARFI elastography is capable of providing qualitative and quantitative results that assist in the diagnosis of canine prostatic alterations in a non-invasive way.(AU)

The objectives of this study were to analyze whether there is genetic variability and assess the linear relationships between plant architecture and maize grain yield. Three experiments were carried out in a complete randomized block design. A group of 51 cultivars was assessed in relation to 22 traits: number of leaves, plant height, ear height, leaf angle, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, and grain yield. Individual analyses of variance were performed, the assumptions of normality of errors and homogeneity of residual variances were tested, and means were grouped by the Scott-Knott test. The phenotypic correlation matrix was constructed using the 22 traits of the 51 cultivars. Results showed that there is genetic variability among cultivars for number of leaves, plant height, ear height, leaf angle, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, and grain yield. Leaves close to the ear have smaller leaf angle and larger length, width, and area of the leaves. Leaf angle gradually increases towards the lower and upper ends of the plant. Length, width, and area gradually decreases in leaves towards the lower and upper ends of the plant. Cultivars with higher number of leaves and larger leaf area are associated with higher grain yield.(AU)

The igapó forests are used as shelter and feeding by several species of fish from the Amazon. In order to increase knowledge about the fish fauna and to infer their distributional pattern within the igapó forest, we sought to describe and compare the diversity and composition of the fish assemblages present in this habitat with the open water area of the lakes and along the rise and fall of waters. Samplings were carried out in four lakes of the Anavilhanas National Park in the months of April and September of 2014, and February of 2015, by means of gillnets. In order to investigate the structure of the igapó and open water assemblages, the rarefaction curve and a Venn diagram and the diversity indices were used, the results of which were tested using the Students t test and the Mann-Whitney U test. Subsequently, a perMANOVA test was applied to test the hypothesis of absence of spatial and seasonal effects on species composition. A total of 931 individuals were collected, distributed in 4 orders, 20 families, 48 genera and 65 species. In the igapó forest, 650 individuals and 62 species were collected, and in the open water 281 individuals and 37 species. The igapó forest presented high richness, abundance, diversity and variability in the composition of the species between periods when compared to the open water of the lakes, moreover, the two habitats have quite different ichthyofaunistic compositions. Additionally, the absence of the effect of fluvial processes was seen on the igapó forest, demonstrated by a high homogeneity in the abundance of the individuals, species richness and biomass of this habitat. Thus, our study demonstrates the importance of the igapó forest in maintaining the abundance and diversity of the ichthyofauna present in black waters of Central Amazonia.(AU)

Global cattle genetic market is experiencing a change of strategy, large genetic companies, traditionally recognized in the artificial insemination field, have also begun to operate in the embryo market. Consequently, the demand for in vitro produced (IVP) embryos has grown. However, the overall efficiency of the biotechnology process remains low. Additionally, the lack of homogeneity of post-cryopreservation survival results of IVP embryos still impairing a massive dissemination of this biotechnology in the field. A great challenge for in vitro production labs is to increase the amount of embryos produced with exceptional quality after each round of in vitro fertilization. Herein, we discuss the molecular and cellular features associated with the competence and cryosurvival of IVP embryos. First, morphofunctional, cellular and molecular competence of the embryos were addressed and a relationship between embryo developmental ability and quality were established with cryosurvival and pregnancy success. Additionally, determinant factors of embryo competence and cryosurvival were discussed including the following effects: genotype, oocyte quality and follicular microenvironment, in vitro production conditions, and lipids and other determining molecules. Finally, embryo cryopreservation aspects were addressed and an embryofocused approach to improve cryosurvival was presented.

The physical and chemical characteristics of gelatin have been used to justify its inclusion in extenders to preserve the sperm quality and improve results of cervical artificial insemination with cooled semen. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of gelatin supplementation in cooling extender on the quality and fertility of ram semen stored at 5°C. Semen samples (n = 24) of Santa Inês rams (n = 6) were diluted in Glycine-Yolk-Milk extender without (control) or with 1.5% of gelatin. The samples were loaded into 0.25 mL straws, cooled to 5°C and stored vertically for 48 and 72 hours. Sample quality was evaluated using straw homogeneity tests based on pH, osmolality and the proportion of spermatozoa (PS) in both upper and lower segments of straws (US and LS), analyses of sperm motility, plasma and acrosomal membrane integrity, and by fertility after artificial insemination. Differences between the US and LS of straws were found for pH and PS (%). They were significant only in the control group at both times: pH 5.96 vs. 5.71 at 48 h and 6.13 vs. 5.89 at 72 h; PS 21.66 vs. 78.34 at 48 h and 20.87 vs. 79.13 at 72 h. Storage in gelatin had very little, to no effect on the sperm kinetics or on the sperm membrane integrity evaluations. The addition of gelatin to the extender did not affect the pregnancy rate which ranged from 4.4 to 26.1%. We conclude that gelatin is effective in maintaining the physical and chemical homogeneity of the semen samples. Further research is needed in order to optimize the use of gelatin supplementation and elucidate any potential benefits.(AU)

Recent studies indicate that rice fields contribute to the conservation of aquatic plants, however, repeated cultivation can reduce the species diversity harbored by rice fields. Repeated tillage, agrochemical application and environmental homogeneity can reduce plant diversity and select for species more tolerant to disturbance. Our hypotheses were: 1) macrophyte richness and biomass decrease with increased rice crop age; and 2) macrophyte species of rice fields are a subsample of natural wetlands and species loss will increase with crop age. We investigated three rice fields of each different ages (old, intermediate and new ones) and three natural intermittent wetlands for this study. Each area was sampled four times throughout the rice cultivation cycle (off-season, initial growth, final growth and post-harvest). Our results showed that the mean macrophyte richness and biomass were similar between rice fields of different ages and lower than that of natural wetlands. Although species composition in the different-aged rice fields was not markedly different, there was nestedness in the rice fields as age increased. Abstract Recent studies indicate that rice fields contribute to the conservation of aquatic plants, however, repeated cultivation can reduce the species diversity harbored by rice fields. In this study, we verified that macrophyte richness and biomass in rice fields was lower than natural wetlands and the species composition was different among wetland types (rice fields and natural wetlands), however our hypothesis that species richness and biomass will decrease with crop age was not confirmed. All rice crops had similar macrophyte assemblage structure (richness, biomass and species composition). However, the another hypothesis tested was confirmed, macrophyte assemblage of rice fields is a subset of natural wetlands and as, the age of a rice field increases, the species that occur in older rice field are subsets of species that occur in younger ones.

The caprine arthritis encephalitis is a virosis with worldwide distribution in livestock and in the mammary form chronic mastitis is prevalent, which can cause assimetric and hardening of the udder, known as indurative chronic mastitis leading to reduction in milk production. The ultrasound is a good method of assessing the mammary gland, because the technique is non-invasive, fast, and easy to apply. This study aimed to evaluate the ultrasonographic features (grayscale, echogenicity, and homogeneity) of mammary parenchyma of 20 seroreacting goats and 20 not seroreacting for caprine arthritis encephalitis virus. It was observed that the average diameter of retromammary lymph nodes of seroreacting animals (0.72cm) to caprine arthritis encephalitis virus was smaller (P= 0.02) than in non seroreacting animals (0.93cm). In analysis between the portions of the udder, the grayscale values of the distal third of the caudal portion of the mammary parenchyma was higher in seroreacting animals (P<0.0001, right side; P= 0.02, left side). Such data suggest that the increase in ultrasonographic grayscale of mammary parenchyma of goats can be correlated to chronic changes caused by caprine arthritis encephalitis, as indurative mastitis. In relation to the subjective aspects of echogenicity and homogeneity, the groups showed no difference between them (P>0.05), displaying mostly heterogeneous and hypoechoic standards. From the results, this study points to evidence that the caprine arthritis encephalitis can cause changes in grayscale measurable by ultrasound, and this can be used as an efficient and non-invasive helper method for monitoring and early detection of indurative mastitis.(AU)

This study aimed to determine digestible methionine+cystine requirement of tambaqui juveniles in the early stage of development (3.03 ± 0.06 g) lasting 45 days. 160 tambaqui juveniles were distributed into DIC, with five treatments (methionine + cystine = 0.66; 0.73; 0.80; 0.87; 0.94%), four replications and eight animals per experimental unit. The basal diets were isonitrogenous (25% crude protein) and isocaloric (3200kcal.kg-1). The results were submitted to the homogeneity test, normality test, analysis of variance, and regression analysis. The physical and chemical parameters of water from the water recirculation system were within those recommended for the species. Digestible methionine+cystine levels did not influence (P>0.05) the survival, hepatosomatic index, visceral fat index and feed intake. However, weight gain and protein efficiency ratio exhibit a linear increase (P<0.05) with increase in methionine and cystine in the feed. Our results showed that the methionine + cystine levels for tambaqui were not fully met, and new studies are recommended.(AU)
