Background: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a neoplasm with low incidence in small animals, and the possible causes are poorly elucidated but may be related to contact with asbestos. In the thoracic cavity, MMP can be localized or generalized to all cavity structures, and its clinical signs depend on this localization. Although some alternative therapies are being discussed, few studies are conclusive, with surgical intervention as the leading therapeutic option. Given this context, this report aimed to describe a case of MMP located in the mediastinum of a bitch treated with radical excision through mediated sternotomy. Case: A 7-year-old bitch of the Shar-pei breed was referred for care due to progressive weight loss and intense dyspnea. During the physical examination, dyspnea and muffled lung sounds were noted. The patient underwent hemodialysis, which showed neutrophilic leukocytosis. An abdominal ultrasound was also performed and revealed mild abdominal effusion, and chest radiography revealed an extensive tumor covering the entire chest cavity. Thoracocentesis was performed, and the material analyzed was a malignant exudate; the patient was referred to median sternotomy for exploratory purposes, and afterward, total macroscopic extirpation of the tumor was performed. A sample was sent for histopathology, and malignant mesothelioma was confirmed. The patient was discharged after 8 days of hospitalization with home treatment and did not return to the hospital. Upon contacting the guardian, we were informed that the animal had died 154 days after the procedure due to unknown causes. Discussion: Malignant pleural mesothelioma affects humans and animals; it is associated with the risk factor of contact with asbestos and the use of flea antiparasitic drugs. In small animals, its incidence is rare, albeit mesotheliomas have been reported in wild and large animals. The clinical signs are related to the location of the neoplasm. When it is located in the thoracic region, dyspnea, muffled lung sounds, cyanosis, and pleural effusion are observed in most cases. Diagnosis is usually late and incidental, although some tests, such as ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, tomography, radiography, and needle biopsy, can help in the diagnosis. Histopathology is the exam of choice for definitive diagnosis, as it helps one observe the proliferation of neoplastic mesothelial cells, atypical mitosis figures, and marked cellular pleomorphism. Many therapeutic options have been discussed, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and anti-tumor immunization, although there is little scientific proof of their efficacy in animals. The current treatment of choice is tumor excision by surgical procedure with a palliative objective since the prognosis of the disease is unfavorable. Minimally invasive video surgery has been gaining more and more space in veterinary medicine and has proven successful in numerous cases of thoracic masses. In the present report, we chose to perform median sternotomy for total excision due to the extension of the mass that occupied the thoracic cavity practically in its entirety. Further research should be conducted to help in palliative treatments and increase the survival of patients with mesotheliomas, given that most studies are done in humans and not animals. We conclude that median sternotomy is still the therapeutic option of choice for the palliative treatment of patients with extensive thoracic pleural mesotheliomas.

Mesotheliomas are malignant neoplasms and cause severe and extensive lesions in the peritoneum, pleura, pericardium and adjacent organs. The present case study discusses the death of a jaguar (Panthera onca) kept under human care in a zoo in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, with an estimated age of 19-years-old. He presented increased abdominal volume, ascites, decreased displacement by the enclosure, inappetence and polydipsia. The patient underwent clinical, laboratory and diagnostic imaging tests and died after a short period of time. The anatomopathological results indicated the diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma, with metastasis in the mesenteric lymph node.(AU)

The aim of this paper was to report a case of papillary epithelial mesothelioma of the peritoneal surface in a cattle. A ten-yearold Gir cow was examined on a rural property, presenting tachycardia, tachypnea, 8% dehydration, ruminal hypomotility submandibular edema and bilateral ventral abdominal enlargement. Rectal palpation showed multiple firm abdominal nodules, of varying sizes, located in the abdominal wall and the presence of large amounts of intra-abdominal fluid, confirmed by transrectal ultrasonography. The peritoneal fluid collected was classified as modified transudate. Exploratory laparotomy was performed along the flank, identifying approximately 150 liters of peritoneal fluid and multiple whitish-colored nodules, firm, irregular and diffuse on the peritoneum and on the serous surface of different organs. Histopathological examination of the biopsy pieces confirmed the diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma classified as papillary epithelioid type. Most cases of mesothelioma occur insidious, and its clinical manifestation occurs in more advanced cases, when the prognosis becomes unfavorable for the animal. Based on the conditions found in this report, euthanasia of the animal was indicated due to compromised well-being.

A case series study was conducted to determine the frequency of causes of abortion in dairy cattle in Uruguay. The sample size of 102 cases was composed of 53 fetuses, 35 fetuses with placentas, and 14 placentas without an associated fetus. All cases underwent gross and microscopic pathologic examinations as well as microbiological and serological testing. The etiology was determined in 54 (53%) of cases, 51 of which were caused by infectious agents. Within the observed 102 cases, 30 (29%) were caused by Neospora caninum, six (6%) by Coxiella burnetii and two (2%) by Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis. Bovine Parainfluenza-3 virus and Salmonella enterica serovar Newport caused one abortion each. Opportunistic bacteria (Escherichia coli, Streptococcus sp., Staphylococcus sp., Mannheimia sp., Trueperella pyogenes, and Providencia stuartii) were associated with 11 abortions. In two cases the fetal death was attributed to dystocia, and in one case the fetus had a congenital mesothelioma. Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection was identified in three fetuses; two of which were co-infected with and had typical lesions of N. caninum. No lesions were observed in the other fetus infected by BVDV. Leptospira interrogans was identified in one fetus without lesions. Despite the relatively low overall success rate in establishing an etiological diagnosis in cases of abortion in cattle, a systemic workup of bovine abortion is necessary to establish prevention and control strategies. This also facilitates monitoring and surveillance of reproductive diseases in dairy cattle, some of which represent a risk to public health.(AU)

A six-year-old female Dachshund presented intense abdominal distension caused by hemorrhagic effusion. Cytological examination of the fluid was performed and suggested a carcinoma. The animal was submitted to exploratory laparotomy and histological examination of the substantially altered spleen revealed epithelioid mesothelioma. Owing to a poor prognosis, poor response to chemotherapy, and development of thoracic effusions that required daily drainages, the owners decided for euthanasia. At necropsy, besides a 600 mL of sera‐hemorrhagic abdominal fluid, no abnormal gross finding was identified in the abdominal cavity. The thoracic cavity was also filled with approximately 200 mL of effusion with same features as those detected in the abdominal fluid. A few firm white-to-gray nodules, with sizes ranging from 0.1 to 0.3 cm, were found in the lungs and diaphragm. Samples of the nodules were stained for routine histopathology and submitted to immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays using the antibodies vimentin, PAN Cytokeratin, calretinin, and TTF-1. Histopathology and IHC findings confirmed the diagnosis of metastatic papillary mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is considered a malignant neoplasm caused by the proliferation of mesothelial cells mostly from the pleura, peritoneum and pericardium. Here we described a case of fatal hemothorax caused by pleural mesothelioma in a lion by means of necropsy, histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Gross inspection of the thoracic cavity showed hemothorax with about 4 liters of blood. Microscopically, numerous, randomly distributed, soft, red-pink, irregular masses with up to 1cm in diameter were observed in both visceral and parietal pleurae. Microscopically, a papillary structure pattern was observed in the thoracic masses, composed mainly by one layer of cubic mesothelial cells, which presented eosinophilic cytoplasm, central nucleus and evident nucleolus, supported by a low cellular fibrovascularstroma. Neoplastic cells were positive for both cytokeratin and vimentin by immunohistochemistry. This seems to be the first report of fatal hemothorax caused by pleural mesothelioma in a lion.(AU)

Background: The prevalence of intracranial neoplasms in dogs represents 2.1 to 4.0% of the cases. Brain tumors may beprimary or metastatic. The objective of this study was to describe two cases of intra encephalic neoplasia in elderly dogsreceived for necropsy by the Veterinary Oncology Service in the Federal University of Pelotas.Cases: Case 1: A 12-year-old female canine, without breed and medium size, was received for necropsy. The animal hashad behavioral changes. Macroscopic examination of the encephalus revealed asymmetry and congestion. The organs werecollected and fixed in 10% formalin. In the brain cleavage we noticed an extensive brown-gray mass with reddish areas, expansive, moderately demarcated, soft to cut and discrete hydrocephalus. Serial fragments of the brain and fragmentsof the organs were sent for processing. The slides were stained with the hematoxylin and eosin technique for histopathological analysis. At the microscopic examination, cuboidal cells were observed in the encephalus sometimes in acinar arrangements, of extensive and very limited pattern, diagnosed as ependymoma. Case 2: It is a 15-year-old, female Poodledog, with several tumors. During necropsy multiple subcutaneous nodules, mesentery, intestinal serosa, stomach and liverwere noticed. At the cut these were firm and whitish. No macroscopic changes were observed in the other organs. Fragments of organs and brain were collected and a serial section of the encephalus was performed for further processing andhistological analysis. In the histopathological analysis the masses were constituted by proliferation of sometimes roundedcells, elongated, with rounded nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm, allowing the diagnosis of mesothelioma. The samecell pattern was observed in other organs. In the frontal cortex of the encephalus there were small foci of cells similar tothose observed in the mesentery, as well as metastatic...(AU)

Mesothelioma is a rare tumor of mesothelium and usually spread by implantation in the same cavity it arises. Regarding bovine mesotheliomas, the abdominal cavity is the most affected site. This article describes a case of diffuse papillary mesothelioma within both thoracic and abdominal cavity with nodal metastasis in an adult cow – based on cytology, histopathology, and immunohistochemical analysis. A 7-years-old cow, Nelore breed (Brazilian beef cattle), with clinical signs of tachypnea, abdominal distention, and positive jugular venous pulse was slaughtered and necropsied due to persistent weight loss. The main gross findings were several verrucous and yellowish nodules spread on pericardium, pleura, and peritoneum. Mediastinal lymph nodes were enlarged and hemorrhagic with multiples yellowish spots on cut surface. The diagnoses of diffuse mesothelioma with nodal metastasis was established and ratified by the microscopic analysis. Immunohistochemical results had strong positivity for cytokeratin and the Ki-67 showed proliferative index of 28%. Vimentin was positive only in the cells of fibrous tissue. In this case, the initial site of the mesothelioma was not recognized. Although it is a post-mortem study, cytology may be very helpful in vivo investigation. Mesothelioma is a rare tumor of mesothelium and usually spread by implantation in the same cavity it arises. Regarding bovine mesotheliomas, the abdominal cavity is the most affected site. This article describes a case of diffuse papillary mesothelioma within both thoracic and abdominal cavity with nodal metastasis in an adult cow based on cytology, histopathology, and immunohistochemical analysis. Equally important, is the IHC to better comprehend this tumor and its behavior.(AU)

In a survey for lesions in cattle in abattoirs from January 2011 to July 2014, 544 lesions were found, of which 65 were neoplasms. Forty two percent of those were of mesenchymal origin; 37% were epithelial; 14,5% were neural crest derivatives; 5% were sex chord derived tumors and 1.5 was from the peripheral nervous system. The most common tumor found was lymphoma (28% of all tumors), most of them as part of the enzootic leukosis complex. Squamous cell carcinoma was the second most frequent tumor (15% of all tumors). Consideration is made on the frequency of these tumors and the importance of the differential diagnosis at gross examination at the slaughterhouse among them and other important lesions, including tuberculous granulomatous lesions. There was a significance occurrence (13% of all tumors) of the adrenal tumor, pheocromocytoma. Papillomatosis represented only 3% of all tumors; as those are common benign tumors in cattle; their low numbers in this review could be explained by the fact that these are not tumors usually detected in the postmortem examination (after the hide was stripped from the carcass) which was mostly the case of this study, but rather by antemortem inspection. Less common tumors found (each accounting for 1.5 to 3% of all tumors) included granulosa cell tumor, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, hemangiosarcoma, hepatic tumors, interdigital fibroma, lipoma, liposarcoma, mammary adenocarcinoma, melanocytic tumors, mesothelioma, mixed apocrine adenocarcinoma of the tail, neurofibroma, renal cell carcinoma, primary pulmonary tumors, uterine adenocarcinoma, and uterine leiomyoma. It is intended that the results of this survey would be helpful in the identification of lesions at in the official meat inspection at the slaughterhouses.(AU)

The study of neoplasms in farm animals is extremely important, since animal health is considered a limiting factor in the development of animal production. The objective of this work was to study the neoplasms of cattle, sheep, goats, buffaloes, horses, pigs, rabbits and chickens, diagnosed in the Pathological Anatomy Sector of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (SAP / UFRRJ), during a period of 72 years of extension services (1947-2019). The tools used for the confirmation and / or conclusion of the diagnoses included clinical signs, macroscopic description of the lesions and histological exams. In some cases, immunohistochemistry was used as an aid and electron microscopy was used in a diagnosis. This study was divided into three chapters: chapter I describes 839 neoplasms in farm animals, according to the anatomopathological diagnosis related to the affected species and the organic system in which the neoplasia developed. The cattle showed the highest number of diagnoses (41.2%), followed by the hens (36.7%), horses (13%), swine (2.9%), rabbits (2.9%), buffaloes (1, 6%), goats (1.6%) and sheep (0.1%). Squamous cell carcinoma was the main cancer diagnosed in cattle (37.6%), in goats (69.2%); in the sheep species, only one case of neoplasia was diagnosed during the study period. Neoplasms of the hematopoietic system stood out in chickens, due to the high frequency of avian leukosis (lymphoid and myeloid) with 74.7%. Equine sarcoid and melanoma were the two most common neoplasms in horses, with 23.8% and 14.7%, respectively. Melanoma was also highlighted in swine with 58.3% and the integumentary system showed the highest frequency of tumors in rabbits (37.7%). In chapter II, the descriptions of 12 diagnoses of neoplasms of buffaloes were deepened, based on samples from the state of Pará. Of these 12, four cases were diagnosed as lymphoma, two as skin squamous cell carcinoma, two pheochromocytomas, both metastatic to abdominal organs. and one case of each of the following neoplasms: neurofibroma in the skin, uterine leiomyoma, ovarian tecoma (the latter two in the same female), and osteochondrosarcoma in the unilateral nasal cavity. Chapter III deals with a series of cases of malignant epithelioid mesotheliomas, of the tubulopapillary type, in four Red Sindi cows aged 15 to 21 years, from the same herd. In addition to clinical signs, macro and microscopy typical of mesothelioma, neoplastic cells showed strong and diffuse cytoplasmic immunostaining for pan-cytokeratin, but were negative for cytokeratin 7 and vimentin. Ultrastructurally, neoplastic cells had delicate microvilli and narrow, anchoring junctions.

Lung neoplasms are considered rare in cattle. This report describes a case of pulmonary adenocarcinoma in a Nelore cow treated in the Large Animal Internal Medicine of FMVZUNESP/Botucatu, SP. The animal had anorexia, no rumen movements, coughing and thin crackling noises and increased tracheobronchial and bronchobronchiolar in the auscultation of both lungs. Because of progressive weight loss, the comparative tuberculin double test was proceeded, but the result was negative. Given the inconclusive diagnosis of clinical findings and laboratory tests, exploratory laparotomy was performed, and the suspicion of mesothelioma. However, due to poor prognosis, it was decided to euthanize the animal. Gross lesions were nodules of various sizes primarily in the parietal and visceral serous spleen, and lung parenchyma. The histopathological epithelial neoplasia found forming acini, with marked nuclear pleomorphism and high in nucleus: cytoplasm. Immunohistochemistry was positive for neoplastic cells, it is cytoplasmic and diffuse (Cytokeratin A1/E1). The diagnosis of lung neoplasms should be considered in cattle with advanced age and/or historical and clinical signs of inappetence, progressive weight loss, especially when there are clinical signs related to respiratory system.(AU)

Mesothelioma is a diffuse neoplasia of the membranes serous pleura, pericardium, peritoneum and tunica vaginalis. It is rare in all animal species. The clinical signs are secondary to the intracavitary increase of effusion, characteristic of this type of tumor. It is also observed dyspnea, increase of abdominal volume, signs of direct congestive cardiac insufficient, among others. The final diagnosis is achieved with histopathological test. There is no effective treatment. Cisplatin is the drug of choice for palliative therapy. This paper reports a case of pleural mesothelioma, diagnosable in necropsy of a Rottweiler male dog. The disease was progressive, with a brief interval since the first treatment, until the death of the patient. Clinically, the dog appeared to suffer great dyspnea due the increase of intrapleural hemorrhagic effusion. The adopted therapy was based in clinical signs and complementary clinical tests. This neoplasia has, indubitably, an unfavorable prognosis.

The mesothelioma is a rare malignant neoplasm, aggressive and originated from the serous surface that revests the peritoneal and pleural cavities of the body. The etiology in humans is associated with asbestos exposition, an industrial amianto residue fiber, and inalation of cigarret smoke. The clinical signs are associated with the mechanical damages caused by the intraabdominal mass, them being intestinal obstruction, anorexia, emesis, abdominal bulging and breathing difficulty when in pleural cavity. The diagnosis is based on clinical findings and complementary examination such as ultrassound, however,it can only be confirmed with biopsy and histopathological examination after laparoscopy, laparotomy or toracotomy. There is no report of success full treatment of this neoplasia in veterinary medicine and most of the information is based on necropsy findings. The objective of this case is to report the surgical removal of a mesothelioma that has been diagnosed after laparotomy and biopsy, measuring approximate 30x40cm and weighing six kilograms. The survival rate of the dog post surgery was three months, however, by the end of this period, the neoplasia reappeared in abdominal cavity and thorax, and euthanasia was the choice made.AU
