Resumo
This study compared cardiovascular and respiratory effects of dexmedetomidine and xylazine in total intravenous anesthesia with propofol, ketamine, and lidocaine. Twenty-one female dogs were submitted to ovariohysterectomy, premedicated with acepromazine and anesthetized with propofol at a variable rate. The dogs were intubated and supplemented with 100% oxygen in a circuit without rebreathing gases in spontaneous ventilation. They were divided into three groups (n=21) after induction: control (CON) with ketamine (2 mg/kg + 0.6 mg/kg/h) and lidocaine (2 mg/kg + 3 mg/kg/h), DEX and XIL with the same drugs as CON, associated with dexmedetomidine (2 µg/kg + 1 µg/kg/h) or xylazine (0.2 mg/kg + 0.1 mg/kg/h). Propofol consumption, fentanyl analgesic rescue, and cardiorespiratory and blood gas parameters were evaluated during anesthesia. The DEX group had a lower consumption of propofol (0.16 ± 0.09 mg/kg/min) compared to CON (0.24 ± 0.09 mg/kg/min), both not differing from XIL (0.23 ± 0.09 mg/kg/min). The mean arterial pressure was higher after the initial bolus in DEX (107 ± 8 mmHg) and XIL (96 ± 11 mmHg) compared to the CON group (80 ± 10 mmHg). Higher accumulation of arterial carbon dioxide and a decrease in pH were observed in the CON group. The total number of fentanyl rescues did not differ between DEX (7) and XIL (6) and were lower than CON (16). Therefore, dexmedetomidine and xylazine reduced intraoperative fentanyl consumption compared to ketamine and lidocaine infusion alone. However, only dexmedetomidine promoted lower propofol consumption and higher blood pressure values.

This study aimed to observe the effects of 17 ß-estradiol replacements on the fecal microbiota in spayed cats. Individual samples of fresh feces were collected and stored at -80° C. Sequencing of the V3/V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene was used, and bioinformatic analysis was performed. Firmicutes/Bacteriodetes ratio was lower in the group receiving estrogen replacement compared to the SHAM group (P = 0,005). Jaccard index (P = 0.123) and Yue & Clayton index (P = 0.094) did not reveal alpha and beta diversity differences. The linear discriminant analysis effect size (LefSe) identified Firmicutes and MegasPhaera as the biomarkers for the SHAM group, and Burkholderiales, Betaproteobacteria, Sutterellaceae, Suterella, Proteobacteria, Proteobacteria unclassified and Collinsella for the group receiving estrogen replacement.(AU)

Obstetric emergencies are common in the clinical routine of dogs and cats. One of the most important obstetric emergencies is dystocia. In general, dystocia occurs when there is a failure at the parturition time or expulsion of the fetus, and the most common cause of dystocia in both species is primary uterine inertia. Another frequently occurring obstetric emergency in bitches and cats is piometra. This disease is an infection that occurs in the uterus caused by hormonal changes in the diestrus phase of animals. In both diseases (dystocia and pyometra), contraceptives can be involved in female dogs and cats. Regarding the treatment, most of the time, dystocias in bitches and cats are addressed through cesarean sections. In pyometra, the most effective therapy is to perform ovariohysterectomy. In the present study, 43 female dogs and 20 female cats with emergency obstetric were monitored during 90 days. Among bitches, 29 (67.44%; 29/43) had pyometra, and 13 (30.23%; 13/43) showed dystocia. In addition, one female dog presented vaginal prolapse. Among the cats, 13 had dystocia (65%; 13/20) and seven (35%; 7/20) pyometra. Some of these obstetric emergencies were related to contraceptive use. Thus, veterinary clinicians must discourage this practice and encourage the neutering of females.

Background: Volume replacement is considered an essential component in the treatment of critically ill patients, but excess f luid administration can be as harmful as the lack of fluid therapy. Therefore, the volume replacement is only beneficial in patients deemed to be fluid responsive, that is, when the individual has an increase in their stroke volume after administration of a volume challenge. This study aim to assess whether conventional and advanced echocardiographic parameters for assessing left ventricular systolic function are able to predict fluid responsiveness in healthy spontaneously breathing dogs. The hypothesis was that some of these parameters would differ between responsive and non-responsive animals and could be used as a complementary measure for assessment of fluid responsiveness. Materials, Methods & Results: A prospective study was carried out in which 22 client-owned healthy dogs over 1 year of age that presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for elective neutering procedure were included. All dogs underwent conventional and advanced echocardiographic examination to obtain the left ventricular internal diameter in diastole normalized (LVIDDn), left ventricular internal diameter in systole normalized (LVIDSn), ejection fraction (EF) and shortening fraction (SF) according to the Teischholz methodology, global longitudinal strain (GLS) and tissue motion annular displacement (TMAD). There parameters were evaluated before and after administration of a volume challenge with 10 mL/kg lactate ringer intravenously for 20 min. Based on the variation in aortic velocity integral time, 31.82% of dogs were considered responsive and 68.18% were non-responsive to the volume challenge. For advanced echocardiography, TMAD indexed by body weight (mm/kg) > 0.89 (P = 0.004) and body surface area (mm/m2) >18.9 (P = 0.004) after volume challenge had the best area...

We present the first report of parasitism by Sarcoptes scabiei (Linnaeus, 1758), in a sechuran fox "Lycalopex sechurae". Sarcoptes scabiei is a mite that produces sarcoptic mange, which can lead to the death of the animal host and can cause epidemic episodes in wildlife communities. The sechuran fox was collected by the environmental police from a citizen who reported the animal. It was sent to a veterinarian specializing in wildlife, "Clinica Mansion Mascota", in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Immediate physical examination showed crusts on its skin, and samples of skin and blood were collected and analyzed. The skin samples were analyzed using a microscope at 40x magnification in the clinic. In addition, skin and blood samples were sent to a private laboratory for further analyses. Both analyses were positive for S. scabiei infection. It is the second report of S. scabiei in a new wildlife species in the Guayas province of Ecuador within less than a year. These events cause concern due the possibility of biological community transmission. Since domestic and feral animals are considered habitual spreaders of this disease, management through ethical procedures such as adoption, medical treatment and neutering campaigns, and awareness-raising projects with empathetic approach are recommended.(AU)

Anecdotal reports suggest that the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 pandemic (COVID-19) has increased overweight and obesity prevalence in dogs and cats. The present report aimed to perform a retrospective overweight/obesity survey on 1,001 consecutive cases attended in the Veterinary Clinics Hospital from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul during its reopening to the public after months closed due to the pandemic. The overall overweight or obesity observed prevalence was 36.63%; being the frequency in cats slightly greater (38.37%) than compared to dogs (35.76%). No local increase in these frequencies was detected. Neutering (dogs and cats), age greater than 10 years (dogs), and male gender (cats) were factors associated with overweight/obesity. Bodyweight was not registered in about 30% of the medical records, while the body condition score was not registered in about 50% of the cases. These flaws were more often observed in feline medical records and efforts to improve these data records are warranted.

Female dogs neutering is a routine surgery that aims to prevent diseases as well as to help populational control. Urinary incontinence is one of the most significant unwanted consequences following the procedure. Pharmacological treatment is recommended for such case, and alpha-adrenergic and estrogenic drugs have been the most frequent choices reported in literature. Besides, tricyclic antidepressants are also able to control clinical signs. The exact mechanism involved with this condition is not yet fully understood. Estrogen deficiency with a subsequent loss of urethral tonus is believed to trigger clinical signs. However, it is possible that other factors such as gonadotropins and gonadotropin-releasing hormone levels may play a part on this complex mechanism of the post-neutering urinary incontinence.

Castration surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgical techniques in the veterinary routine, and the optimal age for its execution is still contradictory among veterinarians. Castration is considered a method of contraception, control of zoonoses and a preventive and therapeutic method for some diseases such as diseases of the reproductive tract. Early neutering is widely applied in several countries, but certain consequences of this practice, such as the increased risk of some diseases such as urogenital disorders, obesity, diabetes mellitus, musculoskeletal disorders and neoplasms must be considered. Therefore, this paper is a review of early neutering of dogs and cats and its consequences, in order to contribute to the decision-making of veterinary professionals, and collaborating with future studies.

This study investigated Brazilians dogs behavior through the Canine Behavioral Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ) and establish if these behaviors have a significant relationship with the age, sex and neutering status of the animal. The questionnaire was answered by owners between November 2018 and April 2020. The sample was divided according to sex (female or male), age (one year or less, from one to three years, from three to seven years, from seven to ten years or more than ten years) and the reproductive status of the animal (neutered or not). For each questionnaire answered, the scores of the 14 behavior categories investigated by C-BARQ were calculated and Spearmans correlation coefficient with a significance level of 5% was used to assess the correlation between these scores with the factors age, sex and reproductive status of the animals (Biostat 5.3 program). The results suggest higher scores for aggressive behavior in older dogs and in neutered dogs. Neutering was also associated with higher scores of fear from other dogs. The findings suggest the need for studies that seek to investigate how castration is linked to these behaviors that can deteriorate the owner-dog relationship.

This case report presents a celioscopy procedure followed by partial salpingectomy (PS) in a pregnant bitch referred to elective video assisted ovariohysterectomy. Through celioscopy it was visualized the embryonic vesicles and PS was performed after conversion to minioceliotomy. The puppies were born by eutocic delivery without clinical alterations. The case suggested that short and regular pneumoperitoneum is not deleterious to dog fetus and video surgery could be used in pregnant bitches. PS allows the fetus development and promotes bitch neutering.

Mammary gland tumors are one of the most commonly diagnosed tumors in female dogs, with a reported prevalence ranging from 26 to 73% in Brazil. In recognition of the importance of these tumors veterinary researchers and clinicians in Brazil produced the first consensus statement regarding canine mammary tumors in 2010. The intention was to establish criteria for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. This study evaluated the methods of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and determination of prognosis used by veterinarians in Brazil, and sought to quantify the number of veterinarians who were aware of the consensus statement. One hundred and three veterinary clinics participated in the study, 87.37% of which recommend early neutering as a preventative treatment for mammary tumors. For diagnosis, 100% of these use laboratory testing, 94.17% perform chest radiography, 78.64% incisional biopsies, 44.66% cytological analysis, and 13.59% immunohistochemical analysis. The most common surgical procedure is unilateral mastectomy (72.81%), and chemotherapy is performed in 49.51% of the clinics. Of the 103 clinics, 66.01% were aware of the consensus. Although knowledge of the consensus statement is widespread among veterinarians in Brazil, not all its recommendations are being followed. Preventive actions for canine mammary tumors are well established in most parts of the country. However, the consensus statement has had little influence on informing prognostic and therapeutic approaches, with a poor uptake of surgical removal of lymph nodes and immunohistochemical examination.

In the feline species, progestins, GnRH agonist implants and melatonin implants are the three main non-surgical contraceptive approaches that are important to discuss today. When available, those can actually come handy in many clinical situations when surgery cannot be performed or should be avoided. To date though, those only offer short to medium term options. Research using gene therapy is however on its way, with encouraging preliminary results. A long term alternative using this technology might become available in the future, changing how we approach contraception in cats in our veterinary clinics.

The objectives of this work were to evaluate the knowledge of owners assisted in the Veterinary Hospital of the Universidade Vila Velha about neoplasms of small animals, and to analyze epidemiological factors involved in the development of these neoplasms. Interviews were conducted with 282 owners of 232 dogs and 55 cats treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Universidade Vila Velha in the period from august / 2018 to july / 2019, which consisted of questions about animal cancer and the animals under their responsibility. Most owners were unaware of animal cancer (61.1%), but were willing to accept treatment (87,2%) for cancer. It was observed that the frequency of neoplasms was 27.9%, the majority of which were dogs (80.7%), and of these the majority presented mammary gland tumors (38.4%), followed by skin neoplasms (37.4%), neoplasms of the reproductive tract (11.1%) and lymphomas (6.1%). Age, gender, neutering status, diet, body score, and breed were significant factors linked to the development of neoplasms in dogs. In cats, there was a high frequency of lymphomas associated with the Feline Leukemia Virus. It was evident that the owners knowledge about animal cancer is scarce, and that veterinarians need to better understand their epidemiological factors so that they can guide prophylactic measures.

Background: In the last years the number of exotic company animals has been increased, and the demand for neuteringservices for these animals has become greater. By the authors knowledge, there are no records of elective ovariectomyin domestic swine (Sus scrofa domesticus). The current paper reports a case of elective laparoscopic ovariectomy in adomestic swine (Sus scrofa domesticus).Case: A 4-month-old domestic swine (Sus scrofa domesticus), weighing 45 kg was referred to elective video-laparoscopicovariectomy at the Veterinary Clinics Hospital of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (HCV - UFRGS). Physicalexamination and laboratory tests, including hemogram and biochemistry (alanine aminotransferase - ALT, serum albumin and creatinine), were within normal range for the species. Ketamine hydrochloride (Cetamin®) 10 mg.kg-1, xylazinehydrochloride (Xilazin®) 2 mg.kg-1, and midazolam (Midazolam®) 0.5 mg.kg-1 were administered intramuscularly (IM)as pre-anesthetic medication. The anesthetic induction was performed with intravenous (IV) propofol (Propovan®) andanesthesia was maintained with isoflurane (Isoforine®) diluted in O2 by a universal vaporizer with a partial gas rebreathinganesthetic system. Throughout the procedure, were monitoring constantly the invasive blood pressure (IBP), electrocardiogram (ECG) in lead II, peripheral arterial saturation with O2 (SpO2), end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration (ETCO2),and esophageal temperature. The abdominal cavity was accessed through the insertion of three portals (one of 10 mm ofdiameter and other two of 5 mm of diameter). The cavity was inflated with medicinal CO2 until the pressure of 10 mmHgwas achieved. The uterine body and ovaries were identified. The right ovary was suspended and, by a bipolar clamp, theovarian vessels were occluded through electrocoagulation in three distinct locations with approximately 0,5 cm betweenthemselves...

The profiles of dog and cat tutors participating in a pet neutering campaign in Teresina (Piauí, Brazil) were evaluated using questionnaire surveys. The majority of participants were observed to be people with higher levels of educational attainment who mainly decided to neuter their animals to avoid unwanted pets, prevent access to the street, and prevent disease. There was no early neutering, which is desirable for disease prevention. The majority of participants were female, with more cats than dogs represented. It was concluded that the level of education of owners is a determinant in the health and welfare of their pets, demonstrating the need for educational campaigns.

Background: Cats can be defined as being overweight if their bodyweight is 15% above optimum weight and classified as obese if they are more than 30% above their optimum weight. There is a general agreement among investigators that the incidence of excess body weight in cats is increasing. Obesity has considerable impacts on the health of cats and is linked to a variety of health issues including orthopedic disease, diabetes mellitus and non-allergic skin conditions. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between obesity and associated diseases in cats examined at some veterinary practices in Istanbul-Turkey.Materials, Methods & Results: Data of 2,272 patients examined at four private veterinary practices in Istanbul was studied to reveal the association between body weight and diseases. Information regarding sex, age and neutering status was also considered for each patient. Patients were classified according to their body weight to three groups as lightweight (female: 3.0 kg and under, male: 4.5 kg and under), optimum -weight (female: 3.0-4.5 kg, male: 4.5-5.5 kg) and overweight/obese (female: 4.5 kg and over, male: 5.5 kg and over). Accounting all adult cats treated by the clinics, diagnoses of osteoarthritis, heart diseases, dermatological diseases, hepatic lipidosis, metabolic syndrome - diabetes mellitus, lameness, gastrointestinal diseases,

Prepubertal gonadectomy is defined as the surgical sterilization of immature male and female animalsaging from 6-to-14 weeks, and it is a less invasive, less traumatic surgery when performed prior to puberty thanin adult animals. In dogs, growth plate closure is delayed when surgery is performed prior to puberty, but thedelay is significantly longer when neutering is done at 7 weeks as compared to 7 months. External genitalia donot develop fully: penile and preputial immaturity and decreased radiodensity of the os penis are frequentlyobserved. Vulvar development is also often insufficient in bitches gonadectomised at 7 weeks. Heat productionis 28% lower in neutered compared to intact cats. A decrease in urethral diameter has been observed in neuteredfemale but not male cats. Effects of prepuberal gonadectomy on behaviour vary depending on species and sex. Ingeneral, excitability and degree of activity are increased in males and females gonadectomised at 7 weeks or 7months, and when surgery is done at 7 weeks animals are found to be more excitable if compared to thosegonadectomised at 7 months. Incidence of urinary incontinence in the canine population may increasesignificantly when gonadectomy is done prior to 3 months of age. The most important anesthetic and surgicalconsiderations concern fasting, the use of a warm environment, the use of short-acting inducing drugs, of volatileanesthesia. Prepubertal neutering is probably an acceptable technique for dogs and cats, although it carries some(minor) risks which should be explained in details whenever using it for client-owned animals.

Despite the beneficial goals of fluid therapy administered during surgery, volume overload can cause deleterious effects, such as alterations on hematimetric parameters. Thus, the objective of this paper was to evaluate two different cristaloid infusion rates during the surgical period and its effects on the 24-hour post-surgical period. Two groups of six animals each were used in the present study, one received 10mL/kg/h (G10) of 0,9% sodium chloride solution and the other 5mL/kg/h (G5) of the same solution. Packed cell volume (PCV) was evaluated in 10 different times during the 24 hours following surgery. The results did not show significant differences between groups, but they showed a major tendency of hemodilution in G10. A significant decrease of PCV was observed after induction of anesthesia. Decrease of PCV after the end of surgery in both groups was also observed, and the return to PCV basal values was observed 12 hours after the procedure in G10 and after eight hours in G5, showing a tendency of prolonged hemodilution in G10.(AU)

For this research 48 male lambs were divided in randomized blocks in a factorial design, having as factors sexual condition (castrated or uncastrated) and time on feed (36 or 78 days). High grain diet was monitored daily to measure the performance of the animal nutrition. The characteristics of the carcass and meat were taken for the fatty acids profile and sensorial analysis. The effect of the factors as sexual condition and time on feed, and the interaction between them, were evaluated by analysis of variance using the GLM procedure of SAS software and the treatment averages were compared by Student"s T test. The uncastrated animals presented greater weight gain and dry matter intake, better feed efficiency, and larger loin area. More time on feed resulted in higher weight at slaughter. Parameters such as pH, color, meat tenderness and sensorial attributes were not affected by treatments. For the fatty acid profile there was effects and interactions between sexual condition and time on feed. It is concluded that castration should not be used when the animal is young and slaughtered and feed intensively, but neutering can be interesting to improve the fatty acid profile of the meat.
