Resumo

Mares, which make up 90% of animals requiring reproductive assistance in commercial equine production systems, are subjected to strong breeding and reproductive efficiency pressure throughout their lives, but the effects of aging on overall and reproductive systems in particular; it often means that we are forcing the natural homeostasis mechanisms under pressure over time. The objective of this brief communication is to summarize some concepts related to the role and importance of equine endometrium, particularly in old mares, the most challenged category to achieve productive and efficiency goals established by humans. Endometritis is one of the most frequent and recurrent pathologies in equine gynecology and is responsible for enormous economic losses in the industry. Alterations of the microbiota, molecular signals and uterine endocrine microenvironment can lead to infertility, but degenerative phenomena associated with age and parity can lead to endometriosis altering maternal recognition of pregnancy and pregnancy maintenance. Maintaining horses in an adequate nutrition status and environment is essential to achieve pregnancy but also to obtain healthy offspring.(AU)

There have been determined the features of m. longissimus lumborum steaks from young cattle-for-fattening of Holstein-Friesian breed, Polish black-and-white variety. There were measured pH values, basic chemical composition and colour parameters. The meat was subjected to moist-ageing for 12 days and, next, stored in modified atmosphere for the following 10 days. The amount of heat loss in relation to the temperature of thermal processing was determined. Texture parameters were studied instrumentally and organoleptically. The studied muscles from young cattle-for-fattening characterised with proper and similar pH values. The average fat content was 4.37%. The surface colour of the studied dorsal muscle was relatively bright, the average value L*=37.97, and on the cross-section L*=32.97. The average value of the muscle surface's 'redness' was a*=18.98, whereas cross-section's a*=20.27. The amounts of heat leakages were rising along with the increase of temperature from 11.24 to 37.14%. Ageing and storing in MAP led to a significant decrease in the amounts of heat leakages. Ageing and storing in MAP had a significant influence on decreasing shear force and on increasing the organoleptic evaluation marks of the m. longissimus lumborum after thermal processing, which shows that the muscle may become culinary meat with features accepted by consumers.(AU)

In view of the widespread increase in herbicide-resistant weeds, biotechnology companies have developed dicamba-tolerant soybean and cotton cultivars. This technology can, however, increase the risk of the productdrifting to adjacent areas.This study was developed with the objective of the to evaluate the phytotoxicity and biometric variables of young eucalyptus plants exposed to subdoses of the herbicide dicamba. The experiment was carried out under field conditions in Rio Verde, state of Goiás, Brazil. The treatments were represented by the application of 0 (control), 7.5, 15, 30, 60, 120 or 240 g ae ha-1of dicamba 45 days after the seedlings were planted in the field. In terms of phytotoxicity, the dicamba doses of 120 and 240 g ae ha-1caused greater damage to the eucalyptus plants in all periods of evaluation. The predominant symptoms were epinasty, increased number of shoots and necrosis and senescence of young branches and leaves. The herbicide doses of 120 and 240 g ae ha-1 significantly compromised plant height and diameter, number of branches and dry mass of leaves and roots, interfering with the growth and development of the eucalyptus crop. The results indicate that the effect of subdoses of the herbicide dicamba can interfere with the proper development of young eucalyptus plants, which may cause losses in the initial plantingphase and future losses for producers.(AU)


Em decorrência do aumento generalizado de plantas daninhas com resistência a herbicidas, empresas de biotecnologia desenvolveram cultivares de soja e algodão tolerantes ao herbicida dicamba. Essa tecnologia pode, no entanto, aumentar o risco do produto ser deslocado para áreas adjacentes às aplicadas. Neste trabalho objetivou-seavaliar a fitotoxicidade evariáveis biométricas de plantas jovens de eucalipto tratadas com subdoses do herbicida dicamba. O experimento foi realizado em condições de campo em Rio Verde, Goiás, Brasil. Os tratamentos foram representados pela aplicação de 0 (testemunha), 7,5, 15,30, 60, 120 ou 240 g ea ha-1de dicamba aos 45 dias após o plantio das mudas no campo. Em termos de fitotoxicidade, as doses de dicamba de 120 e 240 g ea ha-1causaram maiores danos às plantas de eucalipto em todos os períodos de avaliação. Os sintomas predominantes foram epinastia, aumento do número de brotações e necrose e senescência de ramos e folhas jovens. As doses de herbicidas de 120 e 240 g ea ha-1comprometeram significativamente a altura e diâmetro das plantas, número de ramos e massa seca de folhas, caules e raízes, interferindo no crescimento e desenvolvimento da cultura do eucalipto. Os resultados indicam que o efeito de subdoses do herbicida dicamba pode interferir no bom desenvolvimento de plantas jovens de eucalipto, podendo causar prejuízos na fase inicial de plantio e prejuízos futuros para os produtores.(AU)

In vitro germplasm conservation allows to extend the interval between subcultures without compromising the viability and genetic integrity of the plant, ensuring a backup of genotypes with high phytosanitary quality. Thus, this study aimed to verify the effect of four concentrations of Paclobutrazol® in inducing minimum growth in five Manihot esculenta accessions from the in vitro Active Germplasm Bank of Embrapa Cassava and Fruits. An experiment was installed using the Murashige and Skoog medium without addition and added with four concentrations of Paclobutrazol® (0.10, 0.20, 0.30, and 0.40 mg L-1), in five in vitro accessions of M. esculenta: BRS Jari (BGM 2041), Cigana (BGM 0264), BRS Poti Branca (BGM 2017), TME 14, and BRS Novo Horizonte. The statistical design was completely randomized in a 5 x 5 factorial scheme, with 15 repetitions. After 120 days of cultivation, the following variables were evaluated: plant height (cm), number of green leaves, number of senescent leaves, number of mini-cuttings, number of shoots, and fresh and dry mass of shoots and roots (mg). Paclobutrazol® caused a reduction in plant height and gain in root mass for all accessions, in addition to preserving the number of green leaves and decreasing leaf senescence for most genotypes. There was a strong dependence of the genotype in relation to the concentration of Paclobutrazol®. The concentration of 0.20 mg L-1 showed potential in the in vitro conservation of M. esculenta genotypes.(AU)

Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito residual de diferentes recomendações de adubação e momentos deaplicação de adubação nitrogenada após a desfolhação sobre as características morfogênicas, estruturais e produtivas do Megathyrsus maximuscv. Mombaça no período seco do ano. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 4 x 3, com 4 repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos pelas recomendações de adubação: Manual 5ª aproximação (5AP), Manual do Pará (MP), Reposição de nutrientes (RP) e modelo adaptado de Michaelis e Menten (MM) em três momentos de aplicação da fonte de nitrogênio (N) após desfolhação (dia 0, 3 e 6). As adubações com N foram realizadas no período das águas e no período de transição. A estratégia 5AP com N no dia 0 apresentou os maiores valores para massa seca de lâmina foliar (MSLF) e número de folhas vivas e osmenores para taxa de senescência foliar e massa seca de material morto. Já a recomendação MP com N no dia 6 apresentou os maiores valores para MSLF. A adubação nitrogenada no final do período das águas, promove aumento do comprimento médio de lâmina foliar e do número de folhas vivas além de promover redução de material morto da forragem no período seco.(AU)


The objective was to evaluate the residual effect of different fertilization recommendations and nitrogen application times after defoliation on the morphogenic, structural and productive characteristics of Megathyrsus maximuscv. Mombaça in the dry period of the year. A randomized block design was used in a 4 x 3 factorial scheme, with 4 replications. The treatments were constituted by the fertilization recommendations: 5thApproach Guide(5AP), Pará Guide(PG), Nutrient Replacement(RP) and theMichaelis and Menten adapted model(MM) applied for three days after application of the nitrogen (N) source following defoliation (days 0, 3, and 6). Fertilizations with N were carried out in the rainy season and in the transition period. The 5AP strategy with N on day 0 showed the highest values for leaf blade dry mass (LBDM) and number of live leaves and the lowest values for leaf senescence rate and dead material dry mass. The PG recommendation with N on day 6 presented the higher values for LBDM. Nitrogen fertilization at the end of the wet season promotes an increase in the average length of leaf blade and in the number of live leaves, in addition to promoting a reduction in forage dead material in the dry season.(AU)


El objetivo fue evaluar el efecto residual de diferentes recomendaciones de fertilización y tiempos de aplicación de la fertilización nitrogenada después de la defoliación sobre las características morfogénicas, estructurales y productivas de Megathyrsus maximus cv. Mombasa en el período seco del año. Se utilizó un diseño de bloques al azar en un esquema factorial 4 x 3, con 4 repeticiones. Los tratamientos estuvieron constituidos por las recomendaciones de fertilización: Manual 5º aproximación (5AP), Manual do Pará (MP), Reposición de nutrientes (RP) y modelo adaptado de Michaelis y Menten (MM) en tres momentos de aplicación de la fuente de nitrógeno (N) después de la defoliación (día 0, 3 y 6). Las fertilizaciones con N se realizaron en la época de lluvias y en el período de transición. Laestrategia 5AP con N en el día 0 mostró los valores más altos de masa seca del limbo foliar (MSLF) y número de hojas vivas y los valores más bajos de tasa de senescencia foliar y masa seca de material muerto. La recomendación MP con N en el día 6 presentóvalores superiores para MSLF. La fertilización nitrogenada al final de la estación lluviosa promueve un aumento en la longitud promedio de la lámina foliar y el número de hojas vivas, además de promover una reducción en la materia muerta del forraje en laestación seca.(AU)

The demand for high-quality vegetable seeds and the production of vigorous seedlings has increased in recent years, as these characteristics are determining factors of production success. Vegetables are growing in national importance, and kale stands out as an important source of income for small farmers. The objective of this study was to adapt the traditional accelerated aging test methodology with a saturated NaCl solution of kale seeds and evaluate the enzymatic activity after the vigour test. Six batches of kale seeds were used, and the moisture content, weight of one thousand seeds, first germination count, germination, germination speed index, emergence, initial stand, and emergence velocity index were determined. In the accelerated ageing test, the seeds were submitted to the traditional accelerated ageing test method and the accelerated ageing test method with a saturated NaCl solution for ageing periods of 0, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours. Electrophoretic analysis of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) isoenzymes was also performed. The accelerated ageing test, using the traditional method for 72 hours at 41 °C, is adequate for evaluating the physiological potential of kale seeds. The isoenzymatic analyses of SOD, CAT, and ADH demonstrate that the biochemical markers are efficient at differentiating kale seeds after accelerated ageing.(AU)


A demanda por sementes de hortaliças com alta qualidade e a obtenção de mudas vigorosas tem aumentado nos últimos anos, pois estas características constituem fatores determinantes do êxito da produção. As hortaliças têm uma importância nacional crescente, dentre elas se destaca a couve, por ser importante fonte de renda para pequenos agricultores. Objetivou-se adequar a metodologia do teste de envelhecimento acelerado tradicional e com solução saturada de NaCl em sementes de couve e avaliar a atividade enzimática após o teste de vigor. Foram utilizados seis lotes de sementes de couve e determinouse o grau de umidade, peso de mil sementes, primeira contagem de germinação, germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, emergência, estande inicial e índice de velocidade de emergência. No teste de envelhecimento acelerado, as sementes foram submetidas ao método tradicional e com solução saturada de NaCl, por períodos de 0; 24; 48; 72 e 96 horas. Realizou-se também a análise eletroforética das isoenzimas superóxido dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) e álcool desidrogenase (ADH). O teste de envelhecimento acelerado, utilizando o método tradicional na combinação de 72 horas a 41 °C é adequado para avaliar o potencial fisiológico de sementes de couve. As análises isoenzimáticas superóxido dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) e álcool desidrogenase (ADH) demonstram que os marcadores bioquímicos são eficientes e promissores na diferenciação de sementes de couve após o envelhecimento acelerado.(AU)

Based on the hypothesis that climate and fertilizers influence the proportion of tiller age categories in the canopy and, consequently, in herbage accumulation, the objective of this study was to determine the population density and the contribution of tiller age categories for herbage accumulation of Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu during the year and in response to phosphate and nitrogen fertilization. The treatments consisted of two fertilization strategies: low and high fertilization and three tiller ages (young, mature and old), evaluated at four times of the year: winter, early and late spring, and summer. The total number of tillers and the proportion of young tillers were higher in late spring and summer. The growth and herbage accumulation rates showed a typical seasonal pattern and were higher in the canopy under high fertilization. Old tillers contributed more to control the total stem growth rate, as well as the canopy senescence rate. The highest percentage of young tillers is related to the high herbage accumulation in the Marandu palisadegrass canopy.(AU)


Levando em consideração que os fertilizantes e o clima podem influenciar na faixa etária de perfilhos de um dossel e consequentemente no acúmulo de forragem, o objetivo desse trabalho foi determinar a densidade populacional e a contruibuição das faixas etárias de perfilhos para o acúmulo de forragem Uruchloa brizanta cv Marandu durante o ano e em resposta a fertização com fosfato e nitrogênio. O tratamento foi constituido de duas estratégias de fertilização: baixa e alta fertilização e três faixas etárias de perfilhos (jovem, maduro e velho) avaliadas em quatro épocas do ano (inverno, início e fim da primavera e verão). O número total de perfilhos e a proporção de perfilhos jovens foram maiores no final da primavera e no verão. As taxas de crescimento e de acumulação de forragem mostraram um padrão sazonal típico e foram maiores no dossel com alto nivel de fertilização do que com baixo nível de fertilizante. O perfilho velho contribuiu mais para controlar as taxas de crescimento total do caule, bem como para a taxa de senescência do dossel. A maior porcentagem de perfilhos jovens está relacionada ao alto acúmulo de forragem no dossel do capimmarandu.(AU)

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of tree shading levels on tillers' morphogenetic and structural traits, besides the herbage accumulation of Tanganyika grass (Megathyrsus maximus Jacq. cv. Tanganyika). For that, an experiment was carried out from December 2010 to March 2012, under a completely randomized design, with four treatments (shading levels) and five repetitions. Phyllochron (PHY), leaf and stem elongation rates (LER and SER, respectively), number of leaves per tiller (NLT), leaf blade length (LBL), stem length (ST), tiller population density (TPD), leaf (LGR) and stem growth rates (SGR), senescence rate (SR) and herbage accumulation rate (HAR) were assessed. Excepted by the LER and NLT, the shading levels influenced the other morphogenetic variables (P<0.05), positively or negatively. Except in the spring, the TPD linearly increased because of the shading levels (P<0.05). At tiller level, except in the spring, the LBL linearly increased with the shading levels (P<0.05). In general, the SL linearly decreased with the shading levels. Regarding the growth rates, summer II and spring provided greater values, and the lowest one occurred in autumn (P<0.05). The adjustments of both morphogenetic and structural traits ensured the Tanganyika grass a great adaptation to the shaded environment.(AU)


Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do sombreamento arbóreo sobre as características morfogênicas e estruturais dos perfilhos e acúmulo de forragem do capim-Tanganica (Megathyrsus maximus Jacq. cv. Tanganica). Para tanto, um experimento foi conduzido, de dezembro de 2010 a março de 2012, sob delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro tratamentos (níveis de sombreamento) e cinco repetições. Foram avaliados: filocrono (FIL), taxas de alongamento de lâminas foliares (TAlLF) e de colmos (TAlC), número de folhas vivas por perfilho (NFVP), comprimento de lâminas foliares (CLF), comprimento de colmo (CC), densidade populacional de perfilhos (DPP), taxas de crescimento de lâminas foliares (TCLF) e de colmos (TCC), taxa de senescência (TS) e taxa de acúmulo de forragem (TAF). Exceto para TAlLF e NFVP, todas as demais varáveis morfogênicas foram influenciadas (P<0.05), de maneira positiva ou negativa pelos níveis de sombreamento. Exceto na primavera, a DPP aumentou linearmente sob maiores níveis de sombreamento (P<0.05). Em nível de perfilho, exceto na primavera, o CLF aumentou linearmente com o aumento do nível de sombreamento (P<0.05). Além disso, de maneira geral, o CC reduziu de maneira linear com o aumento do nível de sombreamento. Quanto às taxas de crescimento, o verão II e a primavera proporcionaram maiores valores, e as menores taxas foram registradas no outono (P<0.05). Os ajustes das características morfogênicas e estruturais garantiram ao capim-Tanganica ótima adaptação ao ambiente sombreado.(AU)

Background: Endogenous phospholipases A2 (PLA2 ) play a fundamental role in inflammation, neurodegenerative diseases, apoptosis and cellular senescence. Neurotoxins with PLA2 activity are found in snake venoms from the Elapidae and Viperidae families. The mechanism of action of these neurotoxins have been studied using hippocampal and cerebellar neuronal cultures showing [Ca2+]i increase, mitochondrial depolarization and cell death. Astrocytes are rarely used as a model, despite being modulators at the synapses and responsible for homeostasis and defense in the central nervous system. Preserving the cell division ability, they can be utilized to study the cell proliferation process. In the present work cultured astrocytes and glioblastoma cells were employed to characterize the action of ß-micrustoxin (previously named Mlx-9), a PLA2 isolated from Micrurus lemniscatus snake venom. The ß-micrustoxin structure was determined and the cell proliferation, cell cycle phases and the regulatory proteins p53, p21 and p27 were investigated. Methods: ß-micrustoxin was characterized biochemically by a proteomic approach. Astrocytes were obtained by dissociation of pineal glands from Wistar rats; glioblastoma tumor cells were purchased from ATCC and Sigma and cultured in DMEM médium. Cell viability was evaluated by MTT assay; cell proliferation and cell cycle phases were analyzed by flow cytometry; p53, p21 and p27 proteins were studied by western blotting and immunocytochemistry. Results: Proteomic analysis revealed fragments on ß-micrustoxin that aligned with a PLA2 from Micrurus lemniscatus lemniscatus previously identified as transcript ID DN112835_C3_g9_i1/m.9019. ß-micrustoxin impaired the viability of astrocytes and glioblastoma tumor cells. There was a reduction in cell proliferation, an increase in G2/M phase and activation of p53, p21 and p27 proteins in astrocytes. Conclusion: These findings indicate that ß-micrustoxin from Micrurus lemniscatus venom could inhibit cell proliferation through p53, p21 and p27 activation thus imposing cell cycle arrest at the checkpoint G2/M.(AU)

This study examined the effects of annual nitrogen (N) rates of 100 and 200 kg ha-¹ on the morphogenetic and structural traits of Ipyporã grass (Brachiaria brizantha × Brachiaria ruziziensis) under intermittent grazing during the seasons of the year. The experiment was laid out in a randomized-block design with two treatments and three area replicates. Ipyporã grass pastures were grazed by beef cattle. Morphogenetic and structural traits of the forage canopy were evaluated using the marked-tiller technique. Forage accumulation and tiller density (TD) were also evaluated. Significant interaction effects (P < 0.05) between N rates and seasons were observed for the rest period, leaf lifespan (LLS), phyllochron, stem elongation rate (SER) and final leaf length (FLL). During winter, the rest period was shorter (40 vs. 50 days) in the pastures fertilized with 200 kg ha-¹ N. Conversely, in winter, the pastures fertilized with 100 kg ha-¹ N showed higher LLS, SER and phyllochron values, but lower FLL values. There was no isolated effect of N rates (P > 0.05) on forage accumulation rate; leaf appearance, elongation or senescence rates; leaf:stem ratio; or TD. However, the effect of seasons was significant for these variables, with the highest values occurring during spring and summer. The use of 200 kg ha-¹ N in Ipyporã grass pastures reduces the seasonality of forage production.


O objetivo foi avaliar os efeitos das doses anuais de 100 e 200 kg ha-¹ de nitrogênio (N) sobre as características morfogênicas e estruturais do capim-ipyporã, em lotação intermitente durante as estações do ano. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, com dois tratamentos e três repetições de área. Os pastos de capim-ipyporã foram submetidos ao pastejo por bovinos de corte. Foram avaliadas as características morfogênicas e estruturais do dossel forrageiro por meio da técnica de perfilhos marcados. Também foi avaliado o acúmulo de forragem e a densidade populacional de perfilhos (DPP). Foi observada interação significativa (P < 0,05) das doses de N e estações do ano para o período de descanso (PD), duração de vida das folhas (DVF), filocrono, taxa de alongamento de colmos (TAlC) e comprimento final das folhas (CFF). Durante o inverno, o PD foi menor (40 vs 50 dias) nos pastos adubados com 200 kg ha-¹ de N. Em contra partida, no inverno, os pastos adubados com 100 kg ha-¹ de N apresentaram maiores valores para DVF, filocrono e TAlC, e menores para o CFF. Não foi observado efeito isolado de doses de N (P > 0,05) para as taxas de acúmulo de forragem; de aparecimento, alongamento e de senescência de folhas, relação folha:colmo e para a DPP. No entanto, o efeito das estações foi significativo para estas variáveis, com os maiores valores observados durante a primavera e verão. O uso de 200 kg ha-¹ de N para pastos de capim-ipyporã promove redução da estacionalidade de produção da forrageira.

Background: Melanoma is a malignant neoplasm that arises from melanocytes and malanoblasts. It is also more frequently reported in dogs than in other species. They may arise from melanocytes in the skin, on the surfaces of the mucous membranes, and eyes. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological aspects, risk factors and clinicopathological findings of melanoma in dogs in the backlands, northeastern Brazil. Materials, Methods & Results: A retrospective study was carried out in all biopsy samples and necropsy examinations of dogs, from January 2003 to December 2021, at the Animal Pathology Laboratory of the Federal University of Campina Grande, Patos, Paraiba, northeastern Brazil. Epidemiological data, clinical signs, and gross lesions were reviewed from the diagnostic laboratory reports. Samples of the skin, lymph nodes, central nervous system and organs of the thoracic and abdominal cavities were fixed in 10% buffered formalin, processed routinely for histopathology, embedded in paraffin wax, cut into 4 µm sections, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE). Histological sections were also submitted to immunohistochemistry with the primary antibody anti-Melan A. Of the 4717 records found, 1158 (24.5%) were diagnosed with neoplasms, of which 48 (4.14%) cases were of melanoma. Of this total, 28 (58.3%) dogs were elderly, 19 (39.6%) were adults, and 1 (2.1%) was young. Mixed breed animals were the most affected (42.6%), followed by the pinscher breed (19.1%). According to the anatomical region, the most affected site was the skin (38/53=71.7%), followed by the oral cavity (12/53=22.65%) and the eyes (3/53=5.7%). Grossly, the skin lesions were characterized by exophytic and usually blackened, sometimes irregular and firm, nodules. At cut, they had a smooth, compact and blackened surface. Lesions in the oral cavity were characterized by blackened, irregular and infiltrating nodules or masses. The ocular lesions were always unilateral and were characterized by an enlarged and diffusely blackened eyeball, with areas of ulceration and subversion of tissue architecture. In 5 animals there was more than one anatomical site affected, totaling 53 lesions. In 9 (17%) cases, metastases were identified, 8 in regional lymph nodes and 1 in the lung. Histopathology showed a densely non-encapsulated, poorly delimited, expansive and infiltrative neoplasm, composed of neoplastic cells arranged in islands or nests and supported by fibrovascular stroma, containing a variable amount of brownish pigment (melanin). Immunohistochemistry showed strong immunostaining of the neoplastic cells in brown by the anti-Melan A antibody. Discussion: The diagnosis of melanoma was established based on epidemiological, clinical, anatomopathological, and immunohistochemical findings. Gender is not a predisposing factor, and although there was no statistically significant relationship, males were more affected. Senescence is a conditioning risk factor. Elderly animals were more affected (P < 0.0001) than adult ones, with OR = 4.38; and young ones (P = 0.0051), with OR = 12.65. Some breeds, especially those with marked skin pigmentation, were more affected, however the most affected ones in this survey were pinscher and poodle. Cutaneous melanoma accounted for almost 72% of cases, contesting recent studies where oral cavity melanoma was more frequent. Therefore, it is believed that the climatic conditions of the backlands sub-region, in northeastern Brazil, associated with the individual characteristics of the dogs, are involved in the development of these neoplasms, since the climate is predominantly dry, with high temperatures throughout the year, with maximums that can reach 40ºC, favoring the exposure to high incidence of ultraviolet radiation.

This study was developed to examine the growth, yield, chemical composition and in situ degradability of elephant grass cv. Napier (Pennisetum purpureum). Five spraying protocols with biostimulants were tested, namely, Control - no application; 1BR - bioregulator at seven days; 2BR - bioregulator at seven days + bioregulator and foliar fertilization at 20 days; 2BR2 - bioregulator at seven days + bioregulator and foliar fertilization at 20 days + ethylene inhibitor at 30 days; and 3BR - bioregulator at seven days + bioregulator and foliar fertilization at 20 days + ethylene inhibitor and bioregulator at 30 days. The grass was cut evenly at a height of 15 cm and harvested at 70 days of regrowth. The experimental area was divided into two blocks according to the slope. Ninety plots were used, totaling an area of 4,608 m2. Each plot was composed of four 4-m rows spaced 80 cm apart. Chemical composition, morphological traits and forage digestibility data were evaluated. The 3BR protocol, with more bioregulator-based applications, resulted in higher canopy (9.78%) and stem (9.58%) compared with control group. The 2BR and 2BR2 treatments provided a 6.5% higher stem than control treatment. The improvement in the nutritional value of Pennisetum purpureum cv. Napier was due to the 17.55% increase in crude protein (CP) content provided by protocol 3BR relative to control group. Treatments 2BR2 and 3BR improved the effective degradability of dry matter (DM). The application of biostimulant protocols increased the potential degradability of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) (+4.1%), with the greatest response seen in treatment 2BR2 in comparison with control treatment. Biostimulant protocols increase the canopy and stem heights and CP content. The application of a bioregulator associated with foliar fertilization and ethylene inhibitor improves the effective degradability of DM and NDF and the potential degradability of NDF in Pennisetum purpureum cv. Napier harvested at 70 days of regrowth.(AU)


Objetivou-se avaliar o crescimento, a produtividade, a composição bromatológica e a degradabilidade in situ do capim-elefante cv. Napier (Pennisetum purpureum). Foram efetuados cinco diferentes protocolos de pulverização com bioestimulantes: Controle - nenhuma aplicação, 1BR - biorregulador aos 7 dias; 2BR - biorregulador aos 7 dias, biorregulador e adubação foliar aos 20 dias; 2BR2 - biorregulador aos 7 dias, biorregulador e adubação foliar aos 20 dias, inibidor de etileno aos 30 dias; 3BR - biorregulador aos 7 dias, biorregulador e adubação foliar aos 20 dias, inibidor de etileno e biorregulador aos 30 dias. Foi realizado o corte de uniformização do capim a 15 centímetros de altura, sendo a colheita efetuada aos 70 dias de rebrota. A área experimental foi dividida em dois blocos de acordo com a declividade. Foram utilizadas 90 parcelas, totalizando 4.608 m2 de área. Cada parcela foi composta por quatro linhas de quatro metros cada, com espaço entrelinhas de 80 centímetros. Os dados foram avaliados quanto à composição química, características morfológicas e digestibilidade da forragem. O protocolo 3BR, com mais aplicações à base de biorreguladores, resultou em dossel maior (9,78%) e maior altura de caule (9,58%) em relação ao grupo controle, bem como os tratamentos 2BR e 2BR2 promoveram aumento da altura de caule em 6,5% se comparado com tratamento controle. A melhoria no valor nutricional do Pennisetum purpureum cv. Napier se deu em função da elevação no teor de proteína bruta (PB) de 17,55% em relação ao grupo controle com o protocolo 3BR. Houve aumento da degradabilidade efetiva da matéria seca (MS) para os tratamentos 2BR2 e 3BR. A aplicação dos protocolos de bioestimulantes aumentou a degradabilidade potencial da fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) (+4,1%), com maior resposta para o tratamento 2BR2 em relação ao tratamento controle. Os protocolos de bioestimulantes elevam a altura do dossel e do caule e incrementam o teor de PB. A aplicação de biorregulador, associado à adubação foliar e inibidor de etileno melhora a degradabilidade efetiva da MS e FDN e a degradabilidade potencial da FDN do Pennisetum purpureum cv. Napier cortado aos 70 dias de rebrota.(AU)

Resumo

A prática regular de exercícios físicos é uma estratégia preventiva, atrativa e eficaz, para manter e melhorar o estado de saúde física e psíquica em qualquer idade, tendo efeitos benéficos diretos e indiretos para prevenir e retardar as perdas funcionais do envelhecimento, reduzindo o risco de enfermidades e transtornos frequentes em idosos. Nos últimos anos, o interesse na saúde geriátrica de cães e gatos aumentou significativamente devido à crescente longevidade desses animais provocada pelos avanços na medicina veterinária como incremento das especialidades médico-veterinárias, desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias nas indústrias farmacêuticas e oferta de alimentos para animais. Todos estes avanços são estimulados pela alta demanda de tutores interessados no bem-estar animal e em proporcionar maior qualidade de vida. No caso dos animais idosos, entende-se como qualidade de vida manutenção da mobilidade, controle de dor, continência urinária e fecal, apetite e interação com humanos. A realização de exercícios físicos por pacientes geriátricos envolve melhor controle da dor, preservar a mobilidade e deambulação postergando o avanço do envelhecimento e proporcionando maior qualidade de vida. Este artigo tem como objetivo fazer uma revisão da literatura abordando a compreensão atual das práticas de exercícios físicos na qualidade de vida de cães idosos, em paralelo à prática de exercícios físicos em idosos.


The regular practice of physical exercises is a preventive, attractive and effective strategy, to maintain and improve the state of physical and mental health at any age, having direct and indirect beneficial effects to prevent and delay the functional losses of aging, reducing the risk of diseases and frequent disorders in the elderly. In recent years, interest in the geriatric health of dogs and cats has increased significantly due to the increasing longevity of these animals caused by advances in veterinary medicine such as the increase in veterinary specialties, development of new technologies in industries pharmaceutical and animal feed. All these advances are stimulated by the high demand of guardians interested in animal welfare and in providing a better quality of life. In the case of elderly animals, quality of life is understood as maintenance of mobility, pain control, urinary and fecal continence, appetite, and interaction with humans. The performance of physical exercises by geriatric patients involves better pain control, preserving mobility and walking, delaying the advancement of aging and providing a better quality of life. This paper aims to make a literature review addressing the current understanding of exercise practices in the quality of life of elderly dogs.

The objective this study was to identify differences in the morphogenic patterns of four Urochloa brizantha cultivars (marandu, piatã, xaraés and paiaguás grasses) during the stockpiling period. A completely randomized design was used, with three replications, in experimental plots of 9m². The evaluations took place over 2 years. The grasses were stockpiled for 92 (Year 1) and 95 (Year 2) days. The leaf appearance rate of paiaguás grass was higher, compared to other grasses. In Year 1, the stem elongation rate of xaraés grass was higher than other grasses. At the end of stockpiling period of Year 1, the tiller population density (TPD) was higher in the paiaguás grass, intermediate in the xaraés and marandu grasses and lower in the piatã grass. At the end of the stockpiling period in Year 2, TPD was higher in the paiaguás grass canopy, intermediate in the marandu and piatã grasses canopies, and lower in the xaraés grass canopy. Paiaguás grass has greater leaf growth during the stockpiling period and is therefore suitable for use under stockpiled grazing. Xaraés grass has high stem elongation during the stockpiling period, which is why its use under stockpiled grazing must be accompanied by adjustments in pasture management.(AU)


O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar diferenças nos padrões morfogênicos de quatro cultivares de Urochloa brizantha (marandu, piatã, xaraés e paiaguás) durante o período de diferimento. Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com três repetições, em parcelas experimentais de 9m². As avaliações ocorreram por dois anos. Os capins foram diferidos por 92 (Ano 1) e 95 (Ano 2) dias. A taxa de aparecimento foliar do capim-paiaguás foi maior, em comparação aos demais capins. No Ano 1, a taxa de alongamento do colmo do capim-xaraés foi superior aos demais capins. No final do diferimento do Ano 1, a densidade populacional de perfilho (DPP) foi maior no capim-paiaguás, intermediária nos capins xaraés e marandu e inferior no capim-piatã. No fim do período de diferimento do Ano 2, a DPP foi superior no dossel de capim-paiaguás, intermediária nos dosséis dos capins marandu e piatã, e menor no dossel de capim-xaraés. O capim-paiaguás tem maior crescimento foliar durante o período de diferimento, sendo, portanto, apropriado para uso sob pastejo diferido. O capim-xaraés apresenta elevado alongamento de colmo durante o período de diferimento, razão pela qual seu uso sob pastejo diferido deve vir acompanhado de ajustes no manejo da pastagem.(AU)

This study aimed to evaluate the physiological parameters and the biomass flow and structural characteristics of BRS Massai and BRS Tamani grasses under different irrigation conditions. The rating of gas exchange, biomass flow and structural characteristics were performed in dry periods and dry/rainy season, under the water supply of 30; 60; 90 and 120% of the reference evapotranspiration (ETo). The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial arrangement 4x2 (water supply and grass). The experiment was conducted in pots with capacity for 7.5 dm³, using as substrate layer of 0-0.2 m soil. There was no effect (P < 0.05) between the gas exchange in the dry period, having the largest growing parameters of irrigation schemes. In the transition period of dry/rainy, we observed a reversal behavior in relation to the dry period, showing a rapid recovery of grasses under the minor water supply. It was observed quadratic behavior to concentrations of CO2 in the leaf mesophilic (Ci) with maximum point to the BRS Massai grass and minimum point to the BRS Tamani grass, where the major and minor Ci were 119 and 48 ppm in the water supply of 107 and 35% of ETo, respectively. In relation to the biomass flow, the BRS Tamani grass presented greater stem elongation rate and leaf senescence rate in relation to BRS Massai in both periods assessed. In the dry period, we observed a higher biomass production of green leaf blades in the BRS Tamani grass, while in the transition dry/rainy season, the results for this variable were similar, and at the same time that observed higher accumulation of green culm biomass to the BRS Tamani grass, which certainly affected its structure. It is concluded that the application of a minimum daily water supply of 30% of ETo allows the maintenance of BRS Massai and BRS Tamani grasses without incurring the death of tillers and reduction of regrowth vigor, whereas the water supply of 90% of ETo favors the morphophysiological characteristics, especially of BRS Tamani grass.(AU)


Objetivou-se avaliar os parâmetros fisiológicos, as características morfogênicas e estruturais dos capins BRS Massai e BRS Tamani sob diferentes condições hídricas. As avaliações de trocas gasosas, do fluxo de biomassa e das características estruturais foram realizadas nos períodos seco e de transição seca/ águas, sob os regimes de lâminas de irrigação de 30; 60; 90 e 120% da evapotranspiração de referência (ETo). Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado em arranjo fatorial 4x2 (lâminas de irrigação e gramíneas). O experimento foi conduzido em vasos com capacidade para 7,5 dm³, utilizando como substrato a camada de 0-0,2 m do solo. Houve efeito (P < 0,05) entre as trocas gasosas no período seco, onde os crescentes regimes de irrigação proporcionaram melhores resultados. No período de transição seco/chuvoso observou-se uma inversão de comportamento em relação ao período seco, evidenciando rápida recuperação das gramíneas sob os menores tratamentos de irrigação. Observou-se comportamento quadrático para variável concentrações de CO2 no mesófilo foliar (Ci), com ponto de máximo para o capimmassai e de mínimo para o capim-tamani, onde as maiores e menores Ci de 119 e 48 ppm nas lâminas de irrigação de 107 e 35% da ETo, respectivamente. No tocante ao fluxo de biomassa, o capim-tamani apresentou maior taxa de alongamento das hastes e de senescência foliar em relação a cultivar BRS Massai em ambos os períodos avaliados. No período seco, observou-se maior produção de biomassa de lâminas foliares verde no capim-tamani, enquanto que no período de transição seca/águas, os resultados para esta variável foram semelhantes, ao mesmo tempo em que se observa maior acúmulo de biomassa de colmo verde no capim-tamani, o que afetou sua estrutura. Conclui-se que a aplicação de uma lâmina mínima diária de 30% da ETo possibilita a manutenção das gramíneas BRS Massai e BRS Tamani sem incorrer em morte de perfilhos e redução do vigor de rebrotação, ao passo que a lâmina de 90% da ETo favorece as características morfofisiológicas, em especial do capim-tamani.(AU)

O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar o monitoramento fenológico de G. palustrisao longo dos meses de julho/2019 a junho/2020, e correlacionar com as variáveis meteorológicas na Serra Catarinense. Foram avaliadas a intensidade e sincronia das fenofases vegetativas e reprodutivas de 24 indivíduos em três áreas, localizadas em dois municípios de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Em G. palustrisfoi identificada a brotação contínua. Foi observada a presença de folhas maduras durante todo período e a senescência foliar apresentou intensidades variadas. A floração iniciou em dezembro estendendo até abril. As maiores porcentagens de botões florais presentes nas plantas ocorreram de janeiro a março/20 e a antese ocorreu de janeiro a maio, com maiores porcentagens em janeiro e março. Quanto à frutificação, foi observado o início com a presença de frutosimaturos em janeiro se estendendo até junho, mas o período de janeiro a março foi identificado com as maiores porcentagens de frutos imaturos nas plantas. A ocorrência de frutos maduros foi verificada nos meses de fevereiro a junho, sendo em fevereiro e março registradas as maiores porcentagens. Foi identificada a ausência de frutos senescentes somente nos meses de dezembro/2019 e janeiro/2020, e as maiores porcentagens ocorreram nos períodos de outono e inverno, coincidindo com a presença de folhas senescentes. Houve correlação entre temperatura e fotoperíodo para folhas maduras, desfolhamento e botões florais. A sincronia dos eventos fenológicos foi alta para aspectos vegetativos e baixa ou assíncrona para aspectos reprodutivos. Os padrões fenológicos da fenofase reprodutiva foram sazonais, ocorrendo no verão e outono (novembro a junho). Já a fenofase vegetativa ocorreu o ano todo, sendo que os maiores índices de brotação antecederam o período reprodutivo. Os resultados obtidos forneceram informações importantes acerca da fenologia desta espécie nesta região de ocorrência.


The objective of this study was to carry out the phenological monitoring of G. palustrisover the months of July/2019 to June/2020, and to correlate with the meteorological variables in the Serra Catarinense. The intensity and synchrony of the vegetative and reproductive phenophases of 24 individuals in three areas, located in two municipalities of Santa Catarina, Brazil, were evaluated. InG. palustris, continuous sprouting was identified. The presence of mature leaves was observed throughout the period and the leaf senescence showed varying intensities. Flowering started in December extending until April. The highest percentages of flower buds present on the plants occurred from January to March and anthesis occurred from January to May, with the highest percentages in January and March. As for fruiting, the beginning was observed with the presence of immature fruits in January extending until June, but the period from January to March was identified with the highest percentages of immature fruits in the plants. The occurrence of ripe fruits was verified from February to June, with the highest percentages being recorded in February and March. The absence of senescent fruits was identified only in the months of December/2019 and January/2020, and the highest percentages occurred in the autumn and winter periods, coinciding with the presence of senescent leaves. There was a correlation between temperature and photoperiod for mature leaves, defoliation and flower buds. The synchrony of the phenological events was high for vegetative aspects and low to asynchrony for reproductive aspects. The phenological patterns of reproductive phenophase were seasonal, occurring in the summer and autumn (November to June). The vegetative phenophase occurred throughoutthe year,with the highest budding rates preceding the reproductive period. The results obtained provided important information about the phenology of this species in this region of occurrence.

Most sandy soils have low natural fertility and low levels of organic matter, making nitrogen (N) fertilization essential. Thus, five doses of N were applied (0, 75, 125, 175 and 225mg dm-³) in a randomized block design to evaluate the effects of nitrogen fertilization on the morphogenetic, structural and production characteristics of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu in a Quartzarenic neosoil. The doses of N did not affect the height of the canopy. The leaf elongation rate, final leaf length and number of live leaves increased linearly at the doses of N. Leaf appearance rate, stem elongation rate, leaf lifespan, phyllochron, leaf senescence rate and tiller density showed a quadratic response to the rates There was also an effect of N rates in herbage mass, leaf mass, stem mass, which increased linearly. Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu cultivated in Quartzarenic neosoil requires higher doses of N, 175 and 225mg dm-³. Under these conditions, increases in its morphogenetic, structural and productive characteristics are observed. These findings may not be repeated in the most fertile soils with the greatest capacity to supply N.(AU)


A maioria dos solos arenosos tem baixa fertilidade natural e baixos teores de matéria orgânica, tornando a adubação com nitrogênio (N) essencial. Assim, foram aplicadas cinco doses de N (0, 75, 125, 175 e 225mg dm-³) em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, para se avaliarem os efeitos da adubação com nitrogênio nas características morfogênicas, estruturais e produtivas da Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu, em um Neossolo Quartzarênico. As doses de N não afetaram a altura do dossel. A taxa de alongamento foliar, o comprimento final da folha e o número de folhas vivas aumentaram linearmente em função das doses de N. A taxa de aparecimento de folhas, a taxa de alongamento do caule, o tempo de vida da folha, o filocrono, a taxa de senescência foliar e a densidade de perfilhos apresentaram resposta quadrática às doses de N. A massa da forragem, a massa foliar e a massa do caule aumentaram linearmente. Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu cultivada em Neossolo Quartzarênico requer maiores doses de N, 175 e 225mg dm-³. Nessas condições, são observados aumentos em suas características morfogenéticas, estruturais e produtivas. Esses achados podem não se repetir nos solos mais férteis e com maior capacidade de suprir N.(AU)

A sincronia dos eventos fenológicos foi alta para aspectos vegetativos e baixa ou assíncrona para aspectos reprodutivos. Os padrões fenológicos da fenofase reprodutiva foram sazonais, ocorrendo no verão e outono (novembro a junho). Já a fenofase vegetativa ocorreu o ano todo, sendo que os maiores índices de brotação antecederam o período reprodutivo. Os resultados obtidos forneceram informações importantes acerca da fenologia desta espécie nesta região de ocorrência.(AU)


The objective of this study was to carry out the phenological monitoring of G. palustrisover the months of July/2019 to June/2020, and to correlate with the meteorological variables in the Serra Catarinense. The intensity and synchrony of the vegetative and reproductive phenophases of 24 individuals in three areas, located in two municipalities of Santa Catarina, Brazil, were evaluated. InG. palustris, continuous sprouting was identified. The presence of mature leaves was observed throughout the period and the leaf senescence showed varying intensities. Flowering started in December extending until April. The highest percentages of flower buds present on the plants occurred from January to March and anthesis occurred from January to May, with the highest percentages in January and March. As for fruiting, the beginning was observed with the presence of immature fruits in January extending until June, but the period from January to March was identified with the highest percentages of immature fruits in the plants. The occurrence of ripe fruits was verified from February to June, with the highest percentages being recorded in February and March. The absence of senescent fruits was identified only in the months of December/2019 and January/2020, and the highest percentages occurred in the autumn and winter periods, coinciding with the presence of senescent leaves. There was a correlation between temperature and photoperiod for mature leaves, defoliation and flower buds. The synchrony of the phenological events was high for vegetative aspects and low to asynchrony for reproductive aspects. The phenological patterns of reproductive phenophase were seasonal, occurring in the summer and autumn (November to June). The vegetative phenophase occurred throughoutthe year,with the highest budding rates preceding the reproductive period. The results obtained provided important information about the phenology of this species in this region of occurrence.(AU)

Resumo

This study aimed to evaluate the morphogenic and structural characteristics of six Panicum maximum cultivars during the establishment period. A completely randomized block design with four replicates and six treatments (Tamani, Mombaça, Massai, Tanzania, Aruana and Zuri cultivars) was used. Morphogenic (leaf appearance rate, leaf elongation rate e stem elongation rate), structural (final leaf length, tiller population density e number of leaves per tiller) and productive (forage mass, leaf blade mass, stem mass, senescent material mass and leaf:stem ratio) characteristics were evaluated. There was no difference (p > 0.05) between the cultivars in terms of the number of live leaves per tiller (2.95 leaves/tiller). Mombaça cultivar had (p < 0.05) higher canopy height (50.64 cm) compared with other cultivars. The highest (p < 0.05) tiller population density was observed in Tamani (235.90 tillers m-2) and Massai (201.60 tillers m-2) cultivars. Leaf lifespan (54.18 days), phyllochron (17.40 days/leaf) and leaf senescence rate (0.87 cm tiller day-1) were not different (p > 0.05) between cultivars. However, leaf appearance rate was higher (p < 0.05) in Tanzania (0.07 leaves tiller day-1) than in Aruana cultivar (0.05 leaves tiller day-1). Leaf blade mass was higher (p < 0.05) in Mombaça cultivar (1518.31 kg DM ha-1), whereas Massai showed higher (p < 0.05) leaf:stem ratio (9.25). Panicum cultivars Tamani, Tanzania and Massai establishment after 75 days, while the other cultivars establish at 105 days of sowing in the Brazilian Northeast.(AU)

Resumo

Purpose: To quantify the age-dependent changes in the relative volume of elastic fibers, collagen fibers and the proportion of collagen types I/III in the corpus spongiosum of rats. Methods: Forty-eight rats, raised under similar conditions, were divided into four groups (G1 to G4) and underwent penectomy at the ages of 6, 9, 12 and 24 months, respectively. Histological sections from the middle segment of the penis were stained with Weigerts resorcin-fuchsin, Massons trichrome and Picrosirius red, the volumetric density of elastic fibers, collagen fibers and the proportion of collagen types I and III in the corpus spongiosum were determined by stereological analysis. Results: A reduction in the proportion of collagen I/III between the groups G3 and G4 (p < 0.048) was observed. In the volumetric analysis of elastic fiber, we observed a significant rise between the groups G2 and G3 (p < 0.03) and a reduction of the volume between the groups G3 and G4 (p < 0.01). However, there was no difference in the quantity of total collagen between the groups (p > 0.54). Conclusions: Aging in rats did not change the quantity of total collagen but reduced the proportion of collagen types I/III and the volume of elastic fibers.(AU)
