Background: Cardiomyopathies are a primary heart disorder and are one of the most causes of heart failure and sudden death in cats. Restrictive cardiomyopathy is a diastolic dysfunction resulting from endomyocardial fibrosis, with filling restriction and ventricular distention. In these cases, a poor outcome is expected. Anasarca in animals is often associated with dystocia secondary to congenital changes. In adults, this is a rare condition, since subcutaneous edema in animals with congestive heart failure is an uncommon finding. Therefore, this report describes clinical and pathological findings in an unusual presentation of anasarca in two adult cats with restrictive cardiomyopathy. Cases: A 12-year-old female mixed breed cat (case 1) and a 6-year-old male mixed-breed cat (case 2) were present on an emergent basis at the veterinary hospital with a history of respiratory distress. Case 1 showed on physical examination intense restrictive mixed dyspnea and lethargy, with muffled heart sounds and respiratory noises in cardiorespiratory auscultation. The cat exhibited abdominal distension resulting from ascites. Generalized subcutaneous edema was evident mainly in the abdominal and submandibular areas and the thoracic and pelvic limbs. In these regions, a positive Godet signal was observed. Thoracic radiography revealed pleural effusion, and the cat underwent fluid drainage on both sides of the thoracic cavity. Drainage material was sent to the laboratory for clinical analysis, which indicated that it was a modified transudate. The clinical signs worsened, and the cat was euthanized. In case 2, physical examination showed severe restrictive mixed dyspnea, lethargy, and low body temperature (< 32°C). Abdominal distension resulting from ascites and generalized edema in the subcutaneous tissue with a positive Godet sign was observed. On cardiorespiratory auscultation, cardiac sounds and breathing noises were muffled. Thoracic radiography revealed pleural effusion. The cat was immediately placed in an incubator for clinical stabilization with oxygen therapy and warm-up. After 2 h of hospitalization, thoracentesis and drainage of cavity fluids were performed, which were classified as modified transudate. The patient remained in critical condition during hospitalization, evolving to death. The two cats were referred for a complete post mortem examination. Grossly, both cats showed distension of the abdomen and marked edema of subcutaneous tissue, mainly in the abdominal, ventral cervical, and thoracic and pelvic members. In the abdominal and thoracic cavities, a moderate amount of serous-free liquid, slightly reddish was observed. The heart of both cats was enlarged, with a globose appearance and a slightly whitish epicardium. The left ventricular endocardium was mild and diffusely thick and whitish, in addition to moderate dilation of the left atrium. Histological analyses of the heart showed in both cats moderate and diffuse proliferation of fibrous connective tissue in the endocardial region. Discussion: Restrictive cardiomyopathy has major importance in feline medicine due to its severity and poor outcome. Pleural effusion, pulmonary edema, and ascites are common findings in cats with congestive heart failure; however, generalized subcutaneous edema is uncommon. To the author's knowledge, there are no published cases in the literature of anasarca in adult cats with restrictive cardiomyopathy. In human cardiology, this presentation is commonly related to congestive heart failure, and it is reported under several conditions, such as restrictive cardiomyopathy and constrictive pericarditis. The present study suggests that anasarca should be included in the list of associated clinical signs suggestive of severe congestive heart failure, mainly related to restrictive cardiomyopathy.

The species Bradypus variegatus is known as the common sloth, an endemic mammal from neotropical regions, which has been suffering from devastating anthropogenic activities. Our study aimed to describe the brachial plexus of B. variegates, regarding the origin and distribution of nerves, through the sampling of 10 adult females. Analyses were carried out at the Anatomy Section, "Departamento de Morfologia e Fisiologia Animal", "Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco", under license no. 034/2015 of the Ethics Committee on the Use of Animals. The results determined that the brachial plexus of the common sloth starts from the fifth cervical spine segment until the second thoracic segment. This area contains the long and suprascapular thoracic nerves, which originate immediately from the medullary segment 5 and 6, respectively, and from the pectoral, subscapular, axillary, radial, musculocutaneous, medial, forearm and ulnar medial cutaneous nerves, arising from a trunk comprised of cervical spine nerves (C) 7, C8, C9, and thoracic (T) 1 and T2. Regarding other wild and domestic animals, different suggestions were observed about the origin of the plexus in B. variegatus, however, the constituent nerves and their innervation areas did not demonstrate any discrepancies.(AU)

Background: Flexural deformities are anatomical deviations, in varying degrees, of one or more joints, and may have a congenital or acquired origin. Congenital contracture of the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) affects newborn calves and results in hyperflexion of the metacarpal-phalangeal joint, which in severe cases means that the animal must support its own weight on its fetlock joints. The aim of this study is to report the rapid and successful result of applying bilateral total tenotomy technique on a newborn bovine that had been diagnosed with severe bilateral DDFT contracture in the thoracic limbs. Case: A 3-week-old male bovine with a history of difficulty in maintaining a quadrupedal position was attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Tocantins. The animal had severe bilateral locomotor alterations in the thoracic members to the point that he walked on his fetlock joints. The physical examination revealed clinical parameters within the normal range. However, the locomotor system examination showed severe flexor deformity in the bilateral metacarpal-phalangeal joints, and the limbs were being supported on the dorsal face of the fetlock joints, which presented ulcerations, and was suggestive of a shortening of the DDFT. Based on the patient’s history and clinical examination, as well as the severity of the tendon contractures, surgical treatment using the DDFT bilateral total tenotomy technique was decided upon. Postoperative treatment consisted of 2.5 mg/kg of enrofloxacin intramuscularly (IM), SID, for 5 days and 0.5 mg/kg meloxicam via IM, SID, for 3 days; as well as a dressing (cotton, medical bandage and a PVC mold) on the thoracic limbs to provide support and allow the animal to..

The aim of this study was to describe the technique of retrograde venography foot in cows, comparing the approaches of the dorsal common digital vein III with the digital commons II or IV, thoracic and pelvic by administering two different volumes of contrast members. Fifty three fore and hindlimbs of 14 cows were used, a rubber tourniquet was placed at 5cm above accessory digit. Diatrizoatemeglumine was administered at 10mL to 24 members (group 1), 13 dorsal common digital vein III for access 1 (A1), and 11 digital II or IV access 2 (A2). In group 2 20mL was administered to 29 members, 15 by 19 in A1 and A2. After contrast administration, the radiographs were repeated every 20 seconds until 120 seconds. The degree of vascular filling was greater in group 2, independent of venous access, member or moment. There was no significant difference in the degree of radiopacity of radiographic images when compared to the venous access, time and a member of both groups. We conclude that administration of 20mL of contrast showed better vascular filling and radiopacity, with no difference between 20 and 120 seconds after contrast administration in independent radiographic quality venous access.(AU)

The aim of this study was to compare biomechanically the dorsal and medial positions of the locking plates on carpal arthrodesis in dogs. For this, seven pairs of thoracic limbs of dogs were used, in which seven limbs were stabilized with dorsal plate and seven limbs with plate in medial positioning. The members with the surgically stabilized radiocarpal-metacarpal joints were submitted to axial compression testing in a universal testing machine and the yield load, structural rigidity, maximum load and ultimate load of the positioning were compared by Student-Newman-Keuls test at a significance level of 5%. All members fractured in the distal third of the third metacarpal, in the limbs with dorsal plate the fracture occurred distal to the distal hole and in the members with medial plate the fracture occurred in the last hole of the metacarpals two and three. There was no bending or broken implants. There was no significant biomechanical differencebetween the dorsal and medial positions of the implants.(AU)

Callichthyidae comprises the subfamilies Callichthyinae and Corydoradinae, both of which are morphologically distinct and monophyletic. Although there is consensus regarding the monophyly of the family, the relationships of about 80% of its species, currently included in the genus Corydoras, remain poorly known. Despite the vast amount of osteological information for Teleostei, knowledge regarding the phylogenetic implications of encephalon anatomy is sparse and represents a poorly explored source of potential characters. The present study aims to describe the encephalon morphology in members of the Callichthyidae in order to propose new characters that may help address phylogenetic questions regarding this group. In addition to representatives of Callichthyidae, specimens belonging to the Nematogenyidae, Trichomycteridae, Scoloplacidae, Astroblepidae and Loricariidae were dissected for comparative purposes. Head dissection revealed information on the structure of the medulla spinalis, rhombencephalon, mesencephalon, diencephalon and telencephalon. The conditions observed on the encephalons examined suggest that representatives of Callichthyidae have great taste perception and processing, while Corydoradinae stand out for visual acuity and Callichthyinae for mechanoreception processing subunits. Our results also indicate that the encephalon has important features for systematic studies of the family bringing greater resolution to current phylogenetic hypotheses.(AU)

The efficiency of the mesh graft used in lacerating wound was evaluated when comparedto another wound treated by second intention. The debridement of the wound wasperformed, the necrotic tissue was removed for subsequent granulation tissue formationand graft application. The transplanted skin was collected from the thoracic region with thesame measures of the defect to be corrected. The preparation of the graft consisted of theremoval of adipose tissue, and later, with the use of the scalpel blade, several rectilinearcuts were made, leaving it with mesh pattern. The graft was fixed to the wound with theuse of a separate single suture. After the surgical procedure, a bandage with hydrogel wasapplied to the limb of the animal, where the dressing change occurred at intervals of fourdays. We concluded that the wound treatment in the MTE using the graft was efficient withtotal wound healing when compared to the non-grafted MTD treatment.Palavras-chaves: cirurgia reconstrutiva; plástica; cão.

Background: hypertrophic osteopathy is a periosteum disturb characterized by diffuse new bone formation which leads tosignificant thickening and deformity of members. Secondary in nature, it usually follows large pulmonary lesions such asabscesses and neoplasms. Extraskeletal osteosarcomas are rare and extremely malignant mesenchymal neoplasms. Theycomprise approximately 1% of all domestic animals’ osteosarcomas and develop in the absence of a primary bone lesion. The aim of this paper was to describe a case of hypertrophic osteopathy, involving joints and upper limbs bones includingilium, secondary to a mediastinal chondroblastic osteosarcoma with pulmonary metastasis.Case: A 10-year-old spayed female mixed breed dog, weighing 9 kg, was presented with painful limbs, lameness, hind limbsswelling and a four-month history of weight loss. Radiographic examination revealed bilateral and asymmetric periostealreactions on diaphyseal and/or epiphyseal areas of all proximal phalanges; metacarpal, metatarsal, carpal and tarsal bones;radius; ulna; tibia; fibula; humerus; femur and right ilium. An increased soft tissue radiopacity was noted on the lateral sideof the right knee joint. Thoracic radiographies and ultrasonography suggested the presence of a 5-cm neoplasm or abscessin the left caudal lung lobe. At necropsy, the lobe showed a firm and solid, oval white mass measuring 5.2 x 2.9 cm. Anothermass was found in the caudal mediastinum, near the diaphragm, with same color and more irregular aspect, measuring 3.3cm of diameter. Intense periosteal new-bone formation was seen in the entire length of the four limbs bones, characterizedby thickening of the bone surface and formation of irregular trabeculae perpendicular to the cortex. Significant swelling andthickening of the joint capsule was noted in the right knee. There was no microbial growth on aerobic or anaerobic culturesfrom the masses samples sent to culture. [...]

We concluded that the wound treatment in the MTE using the graft was efficient withtotal wound healing when compared to the non-grafted MTD treatment.Palavras-chaves: cirurgia reconstrutiva; plástica; cão.(AU)

The purpose of this study was to establish the biochemical parameters of the abaxial wall, dorsal wall and sole of the hoof of the medial thoracic, lateral, and medial pelvic digits of buffalos. The hoof samples were subjected to destructive biochemical analyses to identify the dry material (DM), mineral matter (MM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and ether extract (EE) contents. Sulfur (S), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) levels were determined based on nondestructive biochemical analyses. The parameters of dry material, mineral matter, organic matter, crude protein and ether extract of hoof capsule of the digits of buffalos can be determined by means of both destructive and nondestructive biochemical analysis. In addition, this study revealed that the highest concentrations of DM, CP and minerals such as, K, Zn and Cu are concentrated in the digits that bear the greatest body mass weight, suggesting that there is a positive correlation between the aforementioned parameters and the strength and growth of the hoof capsule in the digits. As for the element S, this study demonstrated that its highest concentration is located in the lateral digits of the pelvic members.(AU)

The Veterinarian is the technician responsible for rodeos, and his presence is mandatory to guarantee good practices and ensure the welfare of the animals. Ultrasonography is becoming a broader and more effective complementary diagnostic method in large animal medical clinics every day. In equine sports medicine, there are several studies that describe tendon injuries through ultrasound, however, in bovine athletes, there are still no studies using this tool to aid in the diagnosis of the same injuries. Thus, this study was developed, aiming to contribute to the diagnosis of tendon injuries in rodeo bulls. The present study will be presented in two chapters: the first deals with a general introduction about rodeo and the application of ultrasound in large animals, specifically in locomotive members and the second is presented in article format, according to the requirements of the journal. interest. The aim of the present study is to describe the ultrasound anatomy of the flexor structures in the distal region of the thoracic members of healthy rodeo bulls and their correlations. To this end, 43 bulls from a property specialized in breeding and training high-performance animals were evaluated..

Choloepus didactylus, also known as two toed sloth, is the largest species of the Family Megalonychidae, and has as one of its main characteristics only two fingers on the thoracic limbs. Furthermore, the arteries carry blood to the entire body under high pressure, which is why they have extremely strong vascular walls. The rete mirabile is formed by a network of arteries and veins with the function of a countercurrent heat exchange and temperature maintenance system. Given the reasons above, the aim was to identify and to describe the aortic and rete mirabile branches of the locomotor limbs of Choloepus didactylus. For this, six specimens of Choloepus didactylus, five females and one male were used, which had their arteries and veins dissected, contrasted with barium sulfate and injected with latex in red and blue pigment, respectively. In one individual there was no latex injection and fragments of the rete mirabile were removed from the locomotor limbs for histological analysis and scanning electron microscopy. As a result, dissections of the specimens revealed that the aortic arch had two branches, the brachiocephalic trunk and a left subclavian artery in all the individuals. The thoracic aorta, when crossed the aortic hiatus, entered the abdominal cavity and the first artery that appeared in all the animals was the caudal phrenic artery. Four types of distinct branches were found in the initial portion of the abdominal aorta. In the first model, the celiac trunk was the first to appear, followed by the cranial mesenteric artery. In the second model, we observe the gastric artery emerging separately from the celiac trunk and, subsequently, two cranial mesenteric arteries. The third model presented as the first branching the gastric artery, separated from the celiac trunk and followed by only a cranial mesenteric artery. In the fourth model, the gastric artery appeared separated from the celiac trunk, and it appeared divided from its base between the hepatic and splenic arteries, followed by only a cranial mesenteric artery. Histologically, the rete mirabile of C. didactylus revealed that, in both limbs, thoracic and pelvic, the muscular arteries were surrounded by multiple arteries of smaller caliber, as well as veins, nervous tissue and lymphatic vessels in close apposition. Finally, the two toed sloth has different aortic branches when compared to members of the Xenarthra Superorder. Future studies, based on the frequency of appearance of these vascular variations will elucidate their classifications, with anatomical variations being suggested for now and it was not related to sex or age of the animals. The rete mirabile shows to be a source of blood storage during prolonged muscle contractions and allows the exchange of countercurrent heat, since there is no mixture of venous and arterials blood.

Hemimelia is a rare congenital anomaly, characterized by the absence of a part or the whole distal segment of a body member. It is usually unilateral and is classified according to the affected bone segments. In the transverse terminal hemimelia, there is the absence of the whole distal part of a body member, what is defined as congenital amputation. Several studies about cats and dogs concluded that radial hemimelia is the most usual. However, other types of this anomaly are rarely observed in dogs. Therefore, the aim of this study is to report a case of transverse terminal humeral bilateral hemimelia in a mixed-breed dog. In the physical exam was observed a bilateral malformation of the thoracic members. The radiographs revealed the presence of a well-developed scapula, humeral vestiges and the absence of other appendicular segments on the right and left antimeres, what made the hemimelia diagnosis possible. Consanguinity was the probable cause of the anomaly. Because of the scarcity of scientific reports about this pathology in dogs, further studies are needed to investigate the here observed.
