Distribution and relative abundance of the blue shark, Prionace glauca, in the South Brazil / Distribuição e abundância relativa do tubarão-azul, Prionace glauca, no Sul do Brasil

ABSTRACT

A total of 233 blue sharks Prionace glauca (Linnaeus, 1758) were caught by pelagic longline between 1996 and 1999 at different seasons. The study area was the continental slope of the southwestern Atlantic Ocean and adjacent oceanic waters, between 27oS and 35oS, at fishing depths between 25 and 200 m. According to CPUE (number of individuals/1,000 hooks), P. glauca was abundant in November (24.0%) and July (37.5); showed low abundance during March/April (9.2) and was scarce in August (2.2) and December (1.38). The highest concentrations were observed in South Atlantic Central Water (SACW). The scarcity of P. glauca was related to the presence of Subantartic Waters and thermic inversions between surface and the profundity of 100 m approximately.

RESUMO

Um total de 233 exemplares de Prionace glauca (Linnaeus, 1758) capturados durante cruzeiro de pesquisa foi submetido a análises biométricas. A captura ocorreu mediante o uso de espinhel pelágico nos anos de 1996 a 1999 em diferentes estações do ano. A área em estudo foi o talude continental do Rio Grande do Sul e as águas oceânicas adjacentes, entre as latitudes 27°S e 35°S, na profundidade de pesca de 25 a 200 m. Segundo a Captura por Unidade de Esforço (CPUE) em número de indivíduos por 1.000 anzóis, P. glauca foi abundante em novembro (24,0) e julho (37,5); teve baixa abundância em março/abril (9,2) e foi escasso em agosto (2,2) e dezembro (1,38). As diferenças entre as concentrações dos indivíduos foram atribuídas, principalmente, às massas de água presentes no local de lançamento do espinhel. As maiores concentrações foram observadas em Água Central do Atlântico Sul (ACAS). A espécie foi escassa em Água Subantártica (ASA) e em pontos com inversão térmica entre a superfície e a profundidade de 100 m aproximadamente.
