With the intention of studying the infl uence of puberty in the development of domestic cats, we createdtwo tests: the box test and the person test. Cats were tested from their 4th to 12th month of life.We used 15 male cats, distributed into 3 groups, which were kept in 3 nurseries. The behavioral testswere performed two times before and two times after the period which corresponds to puberty. Thebox test consisted of putting inside the nurseries a box with food and recording the time of each catstayed in contact with it. For the person test, we observed the behavior exhibited by the cats in thepresence of people who were familiar to them and non-familiar to them. In the box test we observeda difference of contact with the box between the cats (H=26,62; g.l.=14; p=0,021). In the person testwe observed a larger frequency of affi liative behavior in the presence of a person familiar to the cat in the period before (Z=-3,06; p=0,002) and after (Z=- 3,35; p=0,001) puberty. It was concluded that animals havethe ability to differentiate familiar people or non-family and that puberty did not affect the animals living togetherduring the study(AU)
