Resumo

It was observed 137 sheep (50 corriedale, 41 suffolk and 46 ideal) 12 to 84 months old, in two locations: at Jaboticabal, SP ((21º15 S 48º18 W and 595m high), 30 castrated corriedale males. 20 suffolk and 26 ideal females were used, and at Cidade Gaúcha, PR (2322 S, 5256W and 550m high), 20 corriedale, 21 suffolk and 20 ideal were used, all of them females. The following environmental variables were considered: environmental temperature (Et), air vapour pressure (e), relative humidity (Rh), wind speed (w) and radiant heat load (Rhl); physiological variables were: rectal temperature (Tr), skin temperature (Te), inner woolcoat temperature (Tiv), back surface temperature (Tsv) and respiratory rate (Fr). The animals were observed under shade and under direct sunlight. at 8:30 AM and at 13:00 PM. A thermal comfort index was developed to evaluate environmental conditions for sheep breeding. The new index equation is TCI = 0.66778 Ta + 0.4969 e + 0.5444 tg + 0.1038 w, where Ta is the air temperature (C), e is  the partial vapour pressure (kPa), tg is the globe temperature (ºC) and w is the wind speed (m.s-1) The index is compared to the THI (temperature-humidity index) and to BGHI (Black-globe humidity index), presenting high correlations with rectal temperature (r= 0.475) and respiration rate (r= 0.619). Foram observados 137 ovinos, sendo 50 animais corriedale, 41 suffolk e 46 ideal, com idades de 12 a 84 meses, distribuídos nos dois locais: Jaboticabal, SP (2115 de latitude, 4818 de longitude e 595m de altitude) e Cidade Gaúcha, PR (2322 de latitude, 5256 de longitude e 550m de altitude). Em Jaboticabal foram utilizados 30 animais corriedale,machos castrados, 20 suffolk e 26 ideal fêmeas. Em Cidade Gaúcha,20 animais corriedale, 21 suffolk e 20 ideal, fêmeas. As variáveis consideradas foram a temperatura do ar (Ta), pressão de vapor do ar (e), a velocidade do vento (v) e a carga térmica radiante (CTR), e as variáveis fisiológicas: temperatura retal (Tr), temperatura da epiderme(Te), temperatura do interior do velo (Tiv), temperatura da superfície do velo (Tsv) e frequência respiratória (Fr). Os animais foram observados expostos ao sol e à sombra, de manhã (8h30) e à tarde (13 horas), mantidos em baias ou piquetes com ou sem cobertura. Um índice de conforto térmico foi desenvolvido para avaliar as condições ambientais para as raças ovinas. A nova equação do índice de conforto térmico é ICT = 0,6678 Ta + 0,4969 e + 0,5444 tg + 0,1038v, onde Ta é a temperatura do ar (C), e é a pressão de vapor dágua (kPa),tg é a temperatura do globo (C),e v é a velocidade do vento (m.s-1).
