Resumo

With the increasing production of fuels derived from vegetable oil sources, the fate of the products formed is a concern. Glycerol is a major by-product of this process, and industry absorbs much of this production being unable to use the total amount of glycerol produced, for surplus, researchers have tested in diets to ruminants. This compound is an intermediate in the metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids, and can thus contribute to the energy density of the diet. With this perspective, cows in the last stage of gestation have been the main objects of study. To reduce the costs of diet in feedlots of cattle and sheep, the suitable levels of glycerol are also being studied. It is hoped that with these studies to find a threshold that allows the inclusion ideal of glycerol in diets without compromising the voluntary intake and animal performance.(AU)

Com a crescente produção de combustíveis oriundos de fontes vegetais oleaginosas, o destino dos subprodutos formados é uma preocupação. O glicerol é um dos principais subprodutos desse processo e a indústria absorve boa parte dessa produção sendo incapaz de utilizar cem por cento do glicerol, e com o excedente, pesquisadores têm testado em dietas para ruminantes. Esse composto é um intermediário do metabolismo dos carboidratos e lipídios, podendo assim, contribuir com o adensamento energético da dieta. Com essa perspectiva, vacas em terço final de gestação tem sido dos principais objetos de estudo. Para reduzir os custos da dieta em confinamentos de bovinos e ovinos, os teores adequados de glicerol também estão sendo estudados. Espera-se com esses estudos, encontrar um limiar que possibilite a inclusão ideal de glicerol nas dietas, sem comprometer o consumo voluntário e o desempenho dos animais.(AU)
