Resumo

The purpose of this study was to provide information on some aspects of the behavior of Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, 1803, in approximately 120 kilometers of the Jaguari and Piracicaba rivers. This investigation was undertaken between July 1972 and June 1973. The area under study was divided into three sectors and, in fortnightly samplings, 674 individuals of both sexes were obtained. The results indicated that the overal sex ratio is about 1:1 when considered the total of the individuaIs, but varies significantly from one sector of the river to another. The females attain greater age, length and weight than the males and the relation weight/length differs significantly between both sexes. The results indicated that the individuaIs in this area of study show spacial distribution, related to their stages of development.

 O presente estudo, visando ao conhecimento de aspectos do comportamento do mandi, Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, 1803, de trechos dos rios Jaguari e Piracicaba, foi realizado no período de julho de 1972 a junho de 1973. A extensão fluvial considerada, aproximadamente 120 quilômetros, foi dividida em três setores (A, B e C), nos quais, através de coletas quinzenais, foram capturados 674 exemplares. Constatou-se que a proporção entre os sexos, quando considerados todos os exemplares, aproxima-se de 1:1, diferindo porém, significativamente, em relação aos indivíduos de cada setor. Verificou-se também que as fêmeas atingem idade, comprimento e peso superiores aos machos. Os dados de comprimento e idade mostram que os exemplares, na área considerada, apresentam segregação espacial em função de seu estádio de desenvolvimento.
