Ora-pro-nóbis plants (OPN) were submitted from -5 kPa to -10, -30, -50 or -70 kPa (treatments) of intermittent variation of the matric potential (PM) in the substrate. According to the measured PM with porous cup tensiometer and the water retention curve of substrate, were applied at each irrigation time the volume of water required for each treatment. Up to 140 days after transplanting the PM decrease caused stress on plants by soil water deficit as evidenced by significant reduction in dry mass accumulation, but the stress was low to moderate since there was no significant reduction in leaf area and nor abscission of leaves. There was change in allocation mass between its parts, greater reduction in roots followed by stems and leaves, and photosynthetic efficiency reduction, due to decrease in specific leaf area and leaf area ratio. Under lower PM, the water use efficiency was greater, indicating good productive potential even in this condition, besides a greater number of adaxial epidermal cells, whose size were reduced. In leaves, macronutrient contents followed the order Ca>N>K>Mg>P>S. In whole plant, the phosphorus content was lower than the levels of N, K, Ca and Mg and higher than S. In OPN leaves, PM decrease from -10 kPa to -70 kPa caused a reduction in the energy value, dry extract, crude fiber and lipids, and increased protein and carbohydrates. In stems, similar response was observed for energy value, dry matter, protein and ash. However, for carbohydrates and lipids was observed, respectively, decreased and increased levels due to PM decrease. The stem/leaf reasons revealed that lipids, ash and protein levels are higher in leaves
