Understanding the dynamics of defoliation is essential in the analysis of vegetation response and animal response in different production systems and should be a fundamental part of the studies on grazing management. In this way, the objective was to evaluate the defoliation pattern in Brachiaria brizantha pastures, with distinct structures, under intermittent stocking. The experiment was carried out in the area belonging to the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation Beef Cattle, Campo Grande - MS. The treatments were Brachiaria brizantha ecotype B4, BRS Paiaguás and cv. Xaraés and the repetitions are the three modules of 1.5 ha. The experimental period was divided at times of the year (rainy and dry). Evaluations of frequency and severity of defoliation of individual tillers were performed prior to entry of the animals into the paddocks throughout the retraction period. The technique of marked tillers was adopted, the tillers were marked by means of colored plastic ring. A total of 15 vegetative tillers per experimental unit were distributed in three transects in 7 m, with an equal number of tillers (five), which totals 45 tillers per treatment in each evaluation period. Leaf and stem lengths were reduced during the dry season. In relation to the population density of tillers, pasture of ecotype B4 remained stable throughout the year, while the other pastures of B. brizantha had a reduction in the number of tillers. No effect of time of year was observed on the frequency of leaf blight defoliation and extended tiller disease. In the dry season there was an increase in leaf defoliation severity by leaf category. The defoliation of individual tillers followed the adjustment in the stocking density, presenting few variations among the studied pastures. As the period of occupation progressed, the animal explored the lower extracts of the forage canopy in different proportions. The variations in the structural characteristics of the forage canopy implied in few differences in the dynamics of defoliation in the pastures of B. brizantha. The adjustment in stocking density showed little influence in the removal of leaf blades between the pastures of B. brizantha. As the age of leaf blades advances, it reduces defoliation. The structural components of the tiller are defoliated in different proportions.
