Oysterculture is one of the most promising aquaculture activities. However, in tropical coastal and estuarine environments, such as the mangroves of the Amazon region, salinity is one of the principal factors limiting the farming of bivalve mollusks. In this context, the present study evaluated if the seasonality and the place of implementation of the crop interferes in the growth and occurrence of apoptosis during the oogenesis of mangrove oyster Crassostrea gasar, in addition to identifying which environmental factors that most influence performance throughout the year. The sample was cultivated in a fixed-table system for a period of one year in three different mangrove areas along the Amazon coast, distributed according to distance from the ocean. The study period was divided into four seasonal divisions - the rainy-dry transition period, the dry season, dry-rainy transition, and the rainy season. The salinity, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen concentration of the water were measured in situ using a multiparameter probe during specimen collection, with an average of 20 specimens collected monthly in each growing area. After collection, oyster weight and size were evaluated and histological and immunohistochemical techniques were used to evaluate gonadal activity. Salinity and precipitation were the environmental parameters that most varied over the course of the study period, with significant differences being found among study areas during this period. The best growth performance was recorded for the farms in areas closest to the ocean, and that during the immature stage and spawning, the ovary presents the highest expression of apoptotic proteins, especially in the oogonia cells in the early stages, and in the vitellogenic oocytes after spawning. On the other hand, the expression of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 occurs mainly in mantle. The evidence indicates that areas located closest to the coast, are the most appropriate for commercial-scale oyster farming because it favors the best growth of oysters, and that the apoptosis in the immature and spawned stages plays a role of regulator of the homeostasis of the cellular population in the ovary of C and serves as a model for the understanding of the physiology of bivalve molluscs during reproductive activity.
