The aim ofthe study was to evaluate the effect ofbreed on the reactivity of police horses. For this, 21 horses of the breed Brasileiro de Hipismo (BH) and 32 horses with Mixed Breed (MB) belonging to the Regiment of the Mounted Police 9 of July of the Military Police ofSão Paulo were used. The horses were submitted to a protocol consisting of five tests: guided and mounted bridge crossing, new object, passive and active human approach, to which behavior scores were attributed. For data analysis, the generalized linear model was used, considering the animal effect in repeated measurement structure and comparison between frequency ofpossible scores within each parameter and between breeds. There was an interaction effect (breed and score) on exploratory behavior in the passive human approach test (P<0.05), with lower reactivity for the BH breed. For the behaviors of contact with the human and distance, there was an effect of frequency of occurrence of score (P<0.05). The horses did not touch the human, but remained close to the human. In the guided bridge crossing test there was an interaction effect (breed and score) for the movement to the bridge (P<0.05), in which the BH moved linearly to the bridge exhibiting lower reactivity. The MB horses were distributed among the scores of moving linearly to the bridge or standing still, presenting less uniformity in their behavior and higher reactivity. There was an effect of the frequency of occurrence of scores on the behaviors: movement in front of the bridge, limbs placed on the bridge and transposition (P<0.05). The horses presented linear or lateralized movements and crossed the bridge calmly. Breed influences reactivity and, consequently, equine temperament.
