The objective was to evaluate the use of artifacts as a form of environmental enrichment and its effect on the behavior and physiological parameters of pigs in the day care phase. Thirty - eight male pigs, castrated at 38 days old, from the landrace and large White breeds, were also distributed in four stalls. The treatments were applied in two consecutive periods, with a duration of seven days each, where, in Period 1 (P1) consisted of the presence and absence of artifact, evaluated during seven days and Period 2 (P2) where the artifact was removed from the stalls which had been installed in P1. The artifact consisted of tires of 45 cm in diameter, in the two bays that received it, these were offered during seven days, with the daily withdrawal, for cleaning, in order to maintain the interest of the animal. During the two periods, environmental parameters were collected to characterize the thermal stress, behavioral analysis was performed in the first three days of each period, to observe the effect of the installation in P1, and of the withdrawal in P2, the behavioral parameters were collected, , by means of real-time visual observation every 15 minutes from 8:00 am to 6:00 p.m. Where we used the types of behaviors adapted from Campos et al. (2010) and Kiefer et al. (2009), physiological parameters were performed on the three consecutive days after the behavioral analysis, with collection performed in the morning and afternoon shifts, the physiological variables were respiratory rate, rectal temperature, surface temperature of the caruncula of the eye, flank and neck . In the behavioral analysis, it was observed in the P1 that there was a significant difference at 5% probability for the observed frequencies of the positive variables sleeping, drinking, playing with the toy (BCB), fighting, rummaging, lying awake and eating, and in P2 there was difference significant at 5% probability for the observed frequencies of the positive variables quarreling, sleeping lying awake, drinking, BCB, and defecating.
