The objective was to evaluate the genetic parameters of biologically interpretable and important economically variables obtained through non-linear models, and to understand their relations with performance characteristics. There were 1880 Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fry, belonging to 46 families of half and complete brothers, individually identified with PIT tags (Passive Integrated Transponder tags) allocated in a 9.3m3 net-tank (3x2,5x1,8 m), being weighed in periods of (P1) 1, (P2) 39, (P3) 93, (P4) 153 and (P5) 190 days. Statistical analyzes were performed in two stages, the first one consisted of the nonlinear model selection with better adjustment to the weight data, using Gompertz, Logistic and Exponential models. Later, genetic variance, environmental and family effects, genetic and environmental correlations and direct and indirect genetic gains of asymptotic weight (A) and growth rate (k) parameters were estimated in different weights. It was verified through the unicaracter analysis which was the best model with the fixed and random effects for each evaluated variable. The second step, which consisted in estimating the genetic parameters for asymptotic weight (A), maturity index (k) obtained in the first stage and the weight of the animals at different times were used to estimate the genetic parameters together with the weights in days of cultivation. According to the Akaike criterion (AIC), the model that best fit the data was Gompertz with mean values of (A) 1130g and velocity (k) 0.01065g. In the best model for the unicaracter analyzes was included all effects (animal, tank, sex, family) for parameter A, and removing the family effect for parameter (k). Heritability was 0.30 for the (A), and 0.22 for (k), and was practically equal during weighing. High family effects were found in P1 decreasing during the weighing period increase. The genetic and environmental correlations between asymptotic weight (A) and velocity (k) were negative. Genetic correlations between parameters and weighing were only significant for parameter A with P5. The environmental correlations increased according to the cultivation period, becoming significant after P3. The largest gains were indirectly for (A) and (k), with significant gains for (A) and P4 and P5. The use of curve parameters can help to identify earlier animals with higher genetic potential.
