The evolution of the animal protein production chain and the greater market demand for final product quality reinforce the importance of development and/or improve tools applied to animal breeding, aiming for sustainable genetic progress. The objective of this study was to investigate factors related to feed conversion, interaction genotypes and environments (GxE), and animal welfare through different statistical methods, in two lines of meat quail belonging to the Breeding Farm of the Federal University of Viçosa. In order to evaluate feed conversion, genetic parameters were estimated by means of multi-trait models via Bayesian inference, for the following characteristics: individual feed conversion from 21 to 28 (FC21-28) and from 28 to 35 days of age (FC28-35); body weight gain from 1 to 21 (BWG1-21), 21-28 (BWG21-28), 28-35 (BWG28-35) and from 1 to 35 (BWG1-35) days of age. The highest estimates of genetic correlation found for UFV1 were 0.81 and 0.69 between BWG21-28 and BWG1-35, and FC21-28 and FC28-35, respectively; and for the UFV2 line, were 0.88, and -0.76, between BWG28-35 and BWG1-35, and FC28-35 and BWG1-35, respectively. The heritability estimates for strain UFV1 for BWG21-28 and FC21-28 were 0.69 and 0.55, respectively; while for the UFV2 strain the heritabilities for BWG28-35 and FC28-35 were 0.68 and 0.37. It is suggested as selection criteria the characteristics BWG21-28 and FC21-28 for the UFV1 line; and BWG28-35 for the UFV2 line. To investigate the GxE, different protein levels in the diet (PL) were used, through reaction norms models (RNM). The RNM were compared using the Akaike (AIC) and Schwarz Bayesian (BIC) information criteria. The RNM overcame the traditional model, disregarding G × E and suggested interaction between genotype and protein level in the diet (G × PL) for weight gain at 28 and 35 days of age. The observed moderate to high heritability increased in relation to PL, suggesting the existence of G × PL for growth characteristics in quail. For welfare evaluation, tonic immobility, lineage, sex and age of the animals were used via survival analysis. There was no age significance between the two strains, UFV1 (P = 0.1493) and UFV2 (P = 0.2583). The logrank test indicated a significant difference (P = 0.0407) between lineage / sex levels at 14 days of age. It was observed that the males of the UFV2 lineage presented higher fear behavior in relation to the males of the UFV1 lineage. In this way, it is believed that it is possible to reduce the costs of the breeding program related mainly to feeding of unselected animals and labor with phenotyping.
