This study was carried out with the objective of evaluating Massai grass associated with cunhã, for the production of sheep females. Two experiments were carried out from April to June 2018; in the first, the Massai grass system associated with the cunhã protein bank was evaluated and in the second, a consortium between cunhã and Massai grass in a silvopastoral system with cashew trees. The experiments were carried out in the Embrapa Meio-Norte experimental field, in Teresina - PI. Santa Inês females were used, with an average weight of 37.5 kg. Pastures were managed under rotational stocking with 28 and 4 days of rest and occupation, respectively. The design adopted was randomized blocks with 2 treatments, 2 blocks and 5 experimental paddocks. The analysis of variance of the data was performed and when significant, the averages were submitted to the SNK test at 5% probability. Pasture heights were measured in pre- and post-grazing by sheep, still in pre-grazing, cuts were made at 15 cm from the ground, to determine the forage mass, morphological and botanical composition. The chemical composition and digestibility of DM and MO were determined in samples by simulated grazing. For the ingestive behavior and consumption, the direct observation methodology was adopted on the first and fourth days of grazing. The performance was estimated from the weighings performed at the beginning, every 15 days and at the end of the experimental period. In the first experiment it was observed that the height of the Massai grass pasture in the pre-grazing was on average 53 cm, while in the post-grazing, the Massai grass pasture associated with the protein bank was 5 cm higher than without association (P<0.05). The association with legumes, increased the production of forage by approximately 50 % (P<0.05). The presence of the legume increased the quality of the ingested forage. The sheep spent more time (P<0.05) grazing, 4.8 h, followed by idleness, displacement and rumination. Animals with access to the protein bank reduced the number of bits in the grass. Forage consumption was 56 % higher in the pasture-protein bank system; and also the final weight of the sheep, and in the silvopastoral system, it was found that the forage mass in the consortium was higher than monoculture (P<0.05). Higher number of invaders occurred in the monoculture (P<0.05). The exclusive Massai grass pasture showed more invasive plants than the consortium (P<0.05). Although shading reduces the ambient temperature, it does not inhibit heat stress in sheep. The consortium provided longer grazing time and shorter rumination time (P<0.05). Higher bit rate/min was observed in monoculture (P<0.05). The presence of the legume influenced the forage consumption (P<0.05) and animal weight variation (P<0.05), with a 54 % increase in weight gain. Thus, the results lead to affirm that the association of cunhã with Massai grass pasture, either as a protein bank or in intercropping, is a viable alternative for animal production because it provides a greater forage mass with better nutritional value, which results in greater weight of the sheep.
