The objective was to evaluate the effect of different levels of inclusion of nano copper (Cu) particles (<50nm) in the diet of Japanese quails in comparison with the most used sources, copper sulfate (CuSO4) and copper oxide (CuO). The performance, hematological parameters, hepatic lipid peroxidation, internal and external quality of eggs and determination of copper and other minerals (Ca, Zn, Mg and Fe) in the diets and egg content were evaluated. A total of 160 Japanese quails with 85 days of age and 95% laying were used, distributed in 10 treatments with 8 replicates of two birds each for four weeks. The design was completely randomized in a 3x3+1 factorial scheme (three sources of copper, three levels of inclusion and a control, without inclusion of copper). Data were submitted to analysis of variance at 5% probability, means were compared by Tukey's test and polynomial regression for quantitative levels. There was a significant effect of copper inclusion levels on egg production and egg mass conversion, where birds that did not receive copper had a higher production and those that received 150 ppm of copper had a worse feed conversion. There was no significant interaction (P>0.05) between the factors on hemoglobin, leukocytes, red blood cells, albumin, cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), as well as on lipid peroxides (LPO). A significant effect (P<0.05) of inclusion levels on albumin and ALT was observed. There was a quadratic reduction in albumin concentration and a linear increase in ALT. There was a significant interaction (P=0.047) between factors on hematocrit, where birds that received 450 ppm of CuO had higher hematocrit. There was also a significant effect of the levels within each source, so that there was an increasing linear response in the hematocrit of the birds that received CuO. No significant differences were found for the external egg quality variables. There was no significant interaction (P>0.05) between copper sources and inclusion levels on internal quality variables. When the factors were evaluated separately, a significant effect of copper inclusion levels on albumen height and Haugh unit (HU) was observed, with a quadratic response of copper inclusion levels on these variables. There was a significant interaction (P<0.05) between the factors for Cu, Fe and Zn in the diets. There was a significant interaction (P<0.0001) between the factors for calcium and copper in the eggs, in addition to a linear reduction in the magnesium concentration in the eggs of birds fed with CuSO4 and with nano Cu. The use of nano Cu in the quail's diet did not result in an improvement in the zootechnical performance or in the blood parameters and in the LPO, nor did it affect the internal and external quality of the eggs, compared to other copper sources. The presence of nano Cu in the diets reduced the concentrations of Fe and Zn in them.
