There are different tropical cespitosa grasslands that have high forage production potential and good nutritional quality. However, its structure can influence lamb consumption and performance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different structures of Aruana grass pasture, promoted by different heights, on the performance and daily consumption of newly weaned lambs. The study was repeated for two consecutive years, with two evaluation periods each year, in a completely randomized design with 10 replications. The animal was considered the experimental unit. The animal groups (10 lambs/group) were assigned to three different pasture heights - treatments (T): 1) Short, 25 cm; 2) Medium, 50 cm; 3) Tall, 75 cm. The Short T obtained the highest average daily gain (GMD) (91 ± 10 g / day) in relation to the Medium T and Tall T (68 ± 10 g and 40 ± 13 g / day, respectively). There was also an effect of the period, the highest ADG occurred in the first period. The gain per area showed an interaction between treatment and period. The highest values were found in the Medium T in the first period, and in the Short in the second period. The lowest gain per area recorded was in the Tall T, in the second period. The daily consumption of dry matter of the animals from Tall T was more variable over the different periods, decreasing in the second period. The results reveal that the structure of the tropical cespitosa grass interferes in the speed with which the pasture reaches the stage of maturity, and consequently in its period of use. It is concluded that for a good performance of newly weaned lambs it is important to prepare a cespitosa grassland, such as Aruana grass, with a lower height than generally recommended.
