Aquaculture has become an important and profitable economical activity with great commercial and social interest, however it can cause several environmental impacts if not properly planned. The best site selection for fish breeding systems in floating cages consists of the correct choice of the location, knowledge of the carrying capacity of the site, as well as the water quality and water renewal rate. The production of aquatic organisms is dependent on external subsidies such as feeding, thus generating waste, and the accumulation of which in the system can be harmful to aquatic biota. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the impacts of the installation of fisha farms in a selected stretch of the Chavantes reservoir, located in the middle portion of the Paranapanema River. Data used in this work were collected as part of a long-term thematic project funded by Fapesp. This thesis was divided into two chapters: in Chapter 1, the water quality inside the fish farm was compared to the reference sites upstream to the farm, using monthly data compiled from two research projects developed from April 2008 to December 2011. No detectable impacts of fish farming on water quality is reported. The main changes observed were seasonal fluctuations, in addition to a significant decrease in nutrient levels and chlorophyll at the same time as the invasion of the golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei), during the spring of 2010. The second chapter aimed to estimate the environmental carrying capacity of the area for aquaculture, and compare the modelling predictions with the data collected in the field. For this purpose, collections of limnological data were carried out between 2014 and 2016. The environmental support capacity was calculated using a mass balance model and it resulted that the farm located in the study area does not exploit all the productive potential of the site. The impacts predicted by the model for the concentration of phosphorus in the water and those observed downstream from the farm (r = 0.95; P = 0.048) showed that the Dillon & Rigler mass balance model is valid for estimating the environmental carrying capacity of stretches of hydroelectric reservoirs.
