Here we evaluated histopathologic changes of free ranging neotropical primates naturally infected with YF virus (YFV) as compared to uninfected cohorts. Hepatic changes characterized by massive necrosis with lipidosis and mild inflammation were the most commonly observed in primates infected with YFV. Importantly, severe necrotizing hepatic lesions were often observed in Alouatta sp., whereas Callithrix sp. had nearly no hepatic changes. Furthermore, the frequency of YFV infection was significantly higher in Alouatta sp. when compared to Callithrix sp. or Sapajus sp. Therefore, these data support the notion that Alouatta sp. is highly susceptible to infection and YFV-induced lesions, whereas although susceptible to infection Callithrix sp. do not develop YFV-induced lesions.
